Abstract:The morphological and functional aspects of the glomerular basement membrane of aging hamsters were investigated. Measurements were taken from electron micrographs of glomerular basement membrane in the renal cortex of neonatal, mature and senescent hamsters. The thickness of this structure was found to increase over one hundred per cent from birth to maturity, and ninety per cent from maturity to senescence. In addition, the total amount of protein excreted over a 24 hr period in the urine of hamsters ranging in age from four to 74 weeks was determined. A significant increase in the protein content of the urine was found, with that of the young adults ranging from 0 to 4·5 mg, and that of the senescent animals ranging from 4·5 to 150 mg. When the width values were correlated with the amount of protein excreted by the same animals, a significant degree of concordance was established.
