Abstract:1.1. Juvenile Oreaster reticulatus, initially maintained on a fish (smelt) diet, were split into two groups: one retained on a fish diet, the other switched to an algal diet (Chaetomorpha crassa), and fed ad libitum for 6 wk2.2. The fish-fed group increased in body size (mean ΔR ± SE = 5.4 ± 0.9 mm) while the algal-fed group decreased in size (−0.5 ± 0.3 mm).3.3. The nutrient storage capacity (pyloric caeca index) of the fish-fed group (x̄ ± SE = 8.9 ± 0.6) was significantly higher than that of the algal-fed group (5.7 ± 0.4).4.4. The respiration rate of the fish-fed group (x̄ ± SE = 15.8 ± 0.8 μl O2/g/hr) was significantly higher than that of the algal-fed group (8.1 ± 0.8 μl O2/g/hr).
