Abstract:Purpose - – Since the 1970s productivity growth in most economies slowed, while information and communication technology expenditures increased: the “information technology (IT) productivity paradox.” Some researchers reported an end to the paradox, but this is most likely due to IT industry growth approaching the Year 2000 phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to update IT productivity paradox research. Design/methodology/approach - – For comparability this research replicates methods employed by previous studies but employs a two-level approach: first macroeconomic indicators; second labor and multi-factor productivity. Findings - – Findings suggest IT investment has high positive correlation with gross domestic product growth, but not labor or multi-factor productivity. This ambiguity suggests the paradox is still poorly understood. Research limitations/implications - – The findings are not conclusive; the authors cannot confirm or reject the existence of the productivity paradox. The global recession and banking crisis makes it prudent to wait until recovery before analyzing data from that period. Practical implications - – Lack of convincing evidence supporting positive effects from IT investment suggests some firms benefit from IT investment, but not others, and that IT investment has questionable returns. Social implications - – Firm level studies might find IT investment benefits some firms, but lack of convincing macroeconomic level evidence of positive effects of IT investment suggests the paradox still exists. Originality/value - – This research updates the IT productivity paradox demonstrating the phenomenon is still poorly understood and thus worthy of further study, questioning the benefits of IT investment for industry and national economies.

Abstract:Using a large dataset collected from Zhejiang province,this paper investigates the associations between information technology,organizational change,and firm productivity.We present strong evidence on significant variations of complementarities among certain key components at different phases of firm informatization.More specifically,the complemetarity between information capital and organizational behaviors varies with the size of information investment and the depth of its application within the firms.We also find the significant differences in complementary mechanisms between large firms and small-medium-sized firms.These empirical findings are in stark contrast with the well-accepted results in existing literature focusing on the informatization process of American and European firms.

Abstract:Despite a rapid increase in business spending on capital and services in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the New Digital Economy (mobile technology, the internet, and cloud) has not yet generated any visible improvement in productivity growth. This article reviews the latest evidence for the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany. We find rapidly declining ICT prices, a shift from ICT investment to ICT services, and a continued increase in knowledge based-assets supporting ICT. However, the New Digital Economy is still in its “installation phase” and productivity effects may occur only once the technology enters the “deployment phase”.

Abstract:In recent years, the relationship between information technology (IT) and productivity has become a source of debate. In the 1980s and early 1990s, empirical research on IT productivity generally did not identify significant productivity improvements. More recently, as new data are identified and more sophisticated methodologies are applied, several researchers have found evidence that IT is associated not only with improvement in productivity, but also in intermediate measures, consumer surplus, and economic growth. Nonetheless, new questions emerge as old puzzles fade. This survey reviews the literature, identifies remaining questions, and concludes with recommendations for applications of traditional methodologies to new data sources, as well as alternative, broader metrics of welfare to assess and enhance the benefits of IT.

The Productivity J-Curve: How Intangibles Complement General Purpose Technologies

Abstract:General purpose technologies (GPTs) such as AI enable and require significant complementary investments, including business process redesign, co-invention of new products and business models, and investments in human capital. These complementary investments are often intangible and poorly measured in the national accounts, even if they create valuable assets for the firm. We develop a model that shows how this leads to an underestimation of output and productivity in the early years of a new GPT, and how later, when the benefits of intangible investments are harvested, productivity will be overestimated. Our model generates a Productivity J-Curve that can explain the productivity slowdowns often accompanying the advent of GPTs, as well as the follow-on increase in productivity later. We use our model to assess how AI-related intangible capital is currently affecting measured total factor productivity (TFP) and output. We also conduct a historical analysis of the roles of intangibles tied to R&D, software, and computer hardware, finding substantial and ongoing effects of software in particular and hardware to a lesser extent.

Abstract:A decade of observed large differences in productivity driven competitive advantage cannot be explained by traditional productivity notions or conventional strategic analysis. We conclude on both empirical and theoretical grounds that most traditional sources of productivity have encountered diminishing marginal returns. Large competitive differences appear to arise from a new productivity source, nonlinear systems dynamics in business organizations. This has both theoretical and practical consequences for managing toward competitive advantage and requires a new approach to management, control, and organization.

Abstract:Increasingly, organizations are jumping onto the information technology (IT) outsourcing bandwagon in an effort to create value. However, evidence indicating the positive economic consequences of such initiatives has been limited. This study attempts to fill this void by synthesizing the process-oriented research in IT business value literature and the resource-based theory to develop an integrative research framework for assessing the value proposition of IT outsourcing. With a process-oriented lens, the framework suggests that the effects of IT outsourcing are best documented at the process level and hence, it is imperative that one takes into consideration the impact of IT outsourcing on performance at both the process level as well as the firm level. Grounded in the resource-based view, the framework also accounts for the complementary role of firms' core IT capability as a critical condition for the value creation of IT outsourcing. Consistent with the process-oriented prediction, the findings suggest that the positive effects of IT outsourcing appear mostly at the process level, but not at the firm level. Moreover, it is found that the level of business value created by IT outsourcing is contingent on firms' core IT capability. Firms with superior core IT capability are found to enjoy an advantage in leveraging their outsourcing initiatives to enhance firm value.

Abstract:This article aims to investigate the changing effects of new technology adoption on productivity convergence among oilfield service companies in the context of the shale technical revolution. A club convergence test is utilized to evaluate the competitiveness of each firm with and without new technologies, followed by a productivity catch-up model to identify the effect of new technology utilization over time. Using an unbalanced panel data of 114 major oilfield service companies worldwide from 1997 to 2014, the empirical results show that all firms with shale technologies are converging to the frontier. Increased utilization of shale technologies caused productivity drains when they were first invented, but then led to productivity gains when the technology became more sophisticated. Furthermore, productivity convergence was witnessed during the sample period.

Abstract:It is increasingly acknowledged that we are on the verge of the next technological revolution and the fourth industrial revolution, driven by the digitization and interconnection of all physical elements and infrastructure under the control of advanced intelligent systems. Therefore, there will be a new era of automation that should result in enhanced productivity. However, such productivity enhancements have been anticipated before, particularly during the third industrial revolution commonly known as the information age, and have failed to materialize. Were the productivity increases observed following the first and second industrial revolutions a one-time aberration that will not be repeated in the new digital age In this paper, we attempt to address this question by a semi-quantitative analysis of the prior productivity jumps and their physical technological origins, and extend this analysis to the latent set of analogous digital technologies. Using this approach, we project that there will indeed be a second productivity jump in the United States that will occur in the 20282033 timeframe when the aggregate of the constituent technologies reaches the tipping point at 51 percent penetration.

Abstract:With the increasing money input into information technology,researchers and businesses begin to pay more attention to the value of information technology investment.Researches have shown that information technology investment has not lead to higher firms' performance,there exists a so-called productivity paradox problem.Based on public data of Chinese listed firms,this paper examines the contribution of information technology to operation income and net profit of firms.We have collected more than two hundred listed firms' public finance data covering a period from 1999 to 2004.We construct a classical three factors production function,and employ GLS method to estimate coefficients of regression function.The result of this research shows that information technology investment produces significant positive impact on operation income and net profit of firms.Information technology investment is productive investment;it contributes positively to production output.

Abstract:PurposeThe highly uncertain and turbulent environments nowadays intensify the paradoxical effects of supply base concentration (SBC) on improving cost efficiency while increasing idiosyncratic risk (IR). Digitalization is regarded as a remedy for this paradox, yet digitization's potentially curative effect has not been empirically tested. Leveraging the lenses of paradox theory and information processing theory (IPT), this study explores how two distinct dimensions of digitalization, i.e. digitalization intensity (DI) and digitalization breadth (DB), reconcile the paradoxical effects of SBC.Design/methodology/approachUsing a panel dataset of 1,238 Chinese manufacturing firms in the period of 2012–2020, this study utilizes fixed-effects regression models to test the proposed hypotheses.FindingsThe authors discover that SBC enhances a firm's cost efficiency but induces greater IR. More importantly, there is evidence that DI restrains the amplifying effect of SBC on IR. However, DB weakens the enhancing effect of SBC on cost efficiency and aggravates the SBC's exacerbating effect on IR.Originality/valueThis study advances the understanding of the paradoxical effects of SBC on cost efficiency and IR from a paradox theory perspective. More importantly, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the authors' study is the first to untangle the differential roles of DI and DB in reconciling the paradox of SBC. This study also provides practitioners with nuanced insights into how the practitioners should use appropriate tactics to deploy digital technologies effectively.

Abstract:Previous research has found that information technology (IT) investment is associated with significant productivity gains for developed countries but not for developing countries. Yet developing countries have continued to increase their investment in IT rapidly. Given this apparent disconnect, there is a need for new research to study whether the investment has begun to pay off in greater productivity for developing countries. We analyze new data on IT investment and productivity for 45 countries from 1994 to 2007, and compare the results with earlier research. We find that upper-income developing countries have achieved positive and significant productivity gains from IT investment in the more recent period as they have increased their IT capital stocks and gained experience with the use of IT. We also find that the productivity effects of IT are moderated by country factors, including human resources, openness to foreign investment, and the quality and cost of the telecommunications infrastructure. The academic implication is that the effect of IT on productivity is expanding from the richest countries into a large group of developing countries. The policy implication is that lower-tier developing countries can also expect productivity gains from IT investments, particularly through policies that support IT use, such as greater openness to foreign investment, increased investment in tertiary education, and reduced telecommunications costs.

Abstract:Technological innovation is paramount for realizing long-term productivity benefits in any section of society. As pivotal inter-sectoral intermediaries, commercial banks are expected to deliver consistent and convenient services to a broad demographic, and hence, technology adoption and innovation have become one of the primary objectives for the Indian banking sector. IT-led productivity growth presents an attractive avenue for commercial banks, currently entangled in a web of shrinking profits, increased competition, and strict regulatory compliance. Nevertheless, the unexpected failure of IT in improving bank profitability lends credence to Robert Solow's dictum, "You can see the computer age everywhere, except in productivity statistics". This paper investigates the multifaceted relationships that govern technological diffusion, its impact on the performance metrics of banks, and the potential manifestation of Solow's paradox in this dynamic environment. Additionally, the study seeks to ascertain whether the relationship between fintech investments and performance varies according to bank ownership, size, age, and investment intensity. The results confirm the existence of the paradox, suggesting that Indian banks are unable to leverage IT for profit enhancement or cost reduction. Intra-industry comparisons reveal that if IT-driven profitability is assumed to be a nation's long-term objective, industry characteristics should dictate the allocation of knowledge capital. From a managerial perspective, the findings identify overinvestment in IT capital as a contributing factor to the profitability paradox. The study provides contrasting evidence regarding the performance of IT investments and advises bank managers to exercise caution while implementing IT proposals.

Abstract:The marketplace is replete with productivity metrics that put units of output in the numerator and one unit of time in the denominator (e.g., megabits per second [Mbps] to measure download speed). In this article, three studies examine how productivity metrics influence consumer decision making. Many consumers have incorrect intuitions about the impact of productivity increases on time savings: they do not sufficiently realize that productivity increases at the high end of the productivity range (e.g., from 40 to 50 Mbps) imply smaller time savings than productivity increases at the low end of the productivity range (e.g., from 10 to 20 Mbps). Consequently, the availability of productivity metrics increases willingness to pay for products and services that offer higher productivity levels. This tendency is smaller when consumers receive additional information about time savings through product experience or through metrics that are linearly related to time savings. Consumers’ intuitions about time savings are also more accurate when they estimate time savings than when they rank them. Estimates are based less on absolute than on proportional changes in productivity (and proportional changes correspond more with actual time savings).

Abstract:Both the improvement of productivity and the effectiveness of performance measures have been topics of extreme interest to managers and researchers in recent years. Looks at the potential advantages and disadvantages of using the traditional productivity measure, output/input, as a measure of performance at the firm, work‐unit, individual, product, or product‐line level. Considers the ability of productivity measures to adjust for price changes and to detect factor substitutions. The distortion of productivity measures by fixed expenses and the inability of productivity measures to consider quality changes are among the disadvantage cited. Also, criticisms that have been levelled at traditional cost accounting measures are found to apply to productivity measures. Proposes three criteria that can aid in determining when productivity measures are appropriate as performance measures. Makes recommendations for ways of using productivity measures effectively also.

Abstract:In this paper, we revisit the structure of the centralized Malmquist indices which apply inter-temporal benchmark technologies coupled with a relaxed assumption that the technology remains unchanged between the start and the end of the analysis. From a theoretical point of view as well as with an empirical application to a panel of German savings banks over the time period 2006–2012, we discuss this premise as the technology—which is naturally under the influence of different external and internal conditions—can change over time. This may hence result in an inappropriate estimate of the benchmark technology, generate questionable sets of common-weights and lead accordingly to misleading results and managerial conclusions. To eliminate this pitfall, we propose a new centralized framework in which individual characteristics of the technology, represented by different contemporaneous technology sets over time, can be preserved and later traced in measuring productivity change. Details of our empirical results, determined by the proposed Malmquist index, reveal that the productivity of the group of German savings banks has always been increasing during the whole period analyzed. The positive rates of growth highlight the fact that this group had a stable financial system even when the financial crisis hit the international monetary and financial market. The best practice change component of the suggested Malmquist index also verifies the significant effect of change in the technology on the performance of these banks over time. Although the group of German savings banks reduced its fixed assets over time, our analysis of productivity change shows how successfully these banks could improve even in a highly customized and growing digital business environment. However, looking at the slowdown in the growth of productivity between 2011 and 2012, captured by our results, it seems advisable that they accelerate the adaptation of their business strategy, e.g., by investing more in high-quality and diverse internet-based products and services to catch up with the rapid developments in information technologies.

Abstract:Increasingly, firms across many industries are grappling with the challenge of declining returns to research and development (R&D). In this study, we investigate if and how information technology (IT) can help firms deal with this problem. We theorize that IT systems can help firms to cope with the complexity and inefficiency in managing innovation when R&D investments scale. We explicate the mechanisms through which IT enables firms to cope with the challenges they face when scaling their R&D and we posit that IT will mitigate the diminishing returns to R&D. Using archival data for 161 firms from 1991 to 2003 we find support for our conjecture that IT mitigates the diminishing returns to R&D. The mitigating effect of IT is stronger for firms facing greater complexity in their R&D activities, as measured by inventor intensity and geographical and technological complexity. We interpret and discuss these findings and their practical and theoretical implications.

Abstract:This work analyzes firm-level investment in information technology and corresponding productivity through the use of a production function over the period from 1995-1997. The results are then compared to previous studies that utilized similar data and methodologies to compare productivity estimates over time. The analysis indicates that investment in IT enhances productivity over the period in question and has illustrated increasing returns over time. These findings are supported by the corresponding empirical analysis which yielded IT capital coefficients in a production function of (0.12, 0.16, 0.18) and IT flow coefficients in a similar function of (0.17, 0.24, 0.22) for the years 1995, 1996, and 1997, respectively. These results reflect the change in firm output given a one-percent change in the natural log of dollars invested in IT capital and flow, and are statistically significant.

Abstract:Abstract This article tries to estimate the operating efficiency among 30 years (1989–2018) in the information technology (IT) industry, where technologies are everchanging. The balanced panel data model of Kneip et al. is extended to an unbalanced panel data model for more generic applications. The estimation results based on listed IT firms in the US stock market provide evidence that the law of the jungle is applicable to the IT industry. The industry survivors, which often obtain and maintain market power through merger and acquisition, create economic moats by setting high barriers to entry to defend against risk and uncertainty and dominate the capital-intensive and technology-intensive IT industry. At the same time, the estimation results also demonstrate that the global IT industry is highly sensitive to technological waves and business cycles. Though thriving start-ups and spin-offs stimulate innovation and generate a richer diversity, economies of scale are still essential for sustainable development in the IT industry.
