Abstract:Binuclear diolated copper complexes, Cu2(OH)2L2+2, are formed as the major hydrolysed species in near-neutral solutions of copper (II) ion containing 1:1 molar ratios of 2,2′-bipyridyl, 1,10-phenanthroline, or histamine. Formation constants have been calculated from potentiometric titration data, using computer programmes to allow for other equilibria in the solutions. In all cases, concentrations of the monohydroxy chelate compounds, CuOHL+, are negligibly small. Especially near the beginning of the titrations, the 1:2 complexes, CuL2+2, are deformed in appreciable amounts, whereas the hydrolysis of free copper (II) ion is appreciable towards the end of titrations when histamine is the ligand.
