Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous N-doped carbon nanoflake structures decorated with in situ formed Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NCNS) have been synthesized for the first time by a feasible salt-assisted polymer blowing-up method. The 3D porous carbon materials can be an effective lithium host for the application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) in addressing the challenging issues of the growth of lithium dendrites and the uncontrollable formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The 3D hosts can effectively restrain the growth of Li dendrites by trapping metallic Li in the matrix as well as decreasing local current. Ag nanoparticles act as heterogeneous nucleation sites because of the low nucleation overpotential, and therefore, spatial control of Li metal is realized. The as-fabricated Ag-NCNS electrode presents a dendrite-free plating morphology and long-term cycling stability with the Coulombic efficiency maintained at more than 98% for 200 cycles at 0.5 mA cm(-2) with a cycling capacity of 1.0 mA h cm(-2). In symmetric cells, the Ag-NCNS/Li electrode exhibits much lower voltage hysteresis and stable cycling performance for more than 2000 h.

Abstract:Lithium metal anode (LMA) is puzzled by the serious issues corresponding to infinite volume change and notorious lithium dendrite during long-term stripping/plating process. Herein, the transition metal nitrides array with outstanding lithiophilicity, including CoN, VN, and Ni3N, are decorated onto carbon framework as "nests" to uniform Li nucleation and guide Li metal deposition. These transition metal nitrides with excellent conductivity can guarantee the fast electron transport, therefore maintain a stable interface for Li reduction. In addition, the designed multi-dimensional structure of metal nitride array decorated carbon framework can effectively regulate the growth of Li metal during the stripping/plating process. Of note, attributing to the lattice-matching between CoN and Li metal, the composite Li/CoN@CF anode exhibits ultra-stable cycling performance in symmetrical cells (over 4000 h@1 mA cm(-2) with 1 mAh cm(-2) and 1000h@20 mA cm(-2) with 20 mAh cm(-2)). The assembled full cells based on Li/CoN@CF composite anode, LiFePO4 or S as cathodes, deliver excellent cycling stability and rate capability. This strategy provides an effective approach to develop a stable lithium metal anode for lithium metal batteries.
An Interconnected Silver Coated Carbon Cloth Framework As a Host to Reduce Lithium Nucleation Over-Potential for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anodes

Abstract:Lithium metal is considered as a potential anode for lithium batteries, but its commercialization process is hindered by several problems, including uncontrollable lithium dendrite growth, large volume expansion, low utilization of lithium and so on. To address these issues, in this work, lithiophilic silver layers with 80 nm thickness are coated on the commercial carbon cloth (CC) using thermal evaporation method to regulate Li growth during lithium plating process. We find that the uniformly distributed silver layers can successfully reduce lithium nucleation over-potential, thus inducing the homogeneous deposition of metal Li, supported by density functional theory calculation. Benefited from the as prepared lithiophilic Ag layers, the CC/Ag/Li anode with an ultrahigh areal capacity of 16 mAh cm(-2) is achieved adopting electrochemical deposition at 0.2 mA cm(-2) without the formation of lithium dendrites, which is confirmed by continuous detection using visual discrimination and scanning electron microscope observation. As a result, a stable dendrite-free CC/Ag/Li anode exhibits excellent electrochemical properties: (1) the assembled CC/Ag/Li symmetrical cell maintains a stable voltage hysteresis within 25 mV after cycling 750 hat a current density of 1 mA cm(-2); (2) The assembled CC/Ag/Li-LiFePO4 cell also demonstrates enhanced electrochemical behaviors in terms of rate performance and capacity retention; (3) When coupled with a carbon/sulfur cathode, the CC/Ag/Li anode also demonstrates excellent compatibility. The initial discharge capacity of the CC/Ag/Li-S cell is 899.3 mAh g(-1) at 0.2C, the reversible capacity retains a value of 587.7 mAh g(-1) after 400 cycles, corresponding to a capacity attenuation rate of 0.075% per cycle.

Abstract:Metallic lithium (Li) has attracted much attention as anode for high-energy-density batteries because of its ultrahigh specific capacity (3860mAhg−1) and the lowest electrochemical potential. Uncontrolled Li dendrite growth gives rise to serious safety hazards with poor cycle life and low coulombic efficiency. Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets modified electrodes are designed to inhabit Li dendrite growth with improved electrochemical performance. Due to high surface area and plentiful polar surface functional groups, MOF nanosheets possess enhanced electrolyte uptake capabilities and improved adhesive interactions with Li-ions, which facilitates well-distributed homogeneous Li ionic flux. A remarkable coulombic efficiency of 98% for over 180 cycles at a current density of 2.0mAcm−2 and a cycle capacity of 1.0mAhcm−2 is achieved. This study may pave a way for obtaining high-performance metallic Li batteries with a wide variety of MOFs-based materials.

Abstract:The lithium metal anode (LMA) is considered as a promising star for next-generation high-energy density batteries but is still hampered by the severe growth of uncontrollable lithium dendrites. Here, we design "spansules" made of NaMg(Mn)F-3@C core@shell microstructures as the matrix for the LMA, which can offer a long-lasting release of functional ions into the electrolyte. By the assistance of cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, we reveal that an in situ-formed metal layer and a unique LiF-involved bilayer structure on the Li/electrolyte interface would be beneficial for effectively suppressing the growth of lithium dendrites. As a result, the spansule-modified anode affords a high Coulombic efficiency of 98% for over 1000 cycles at a current density of 2 mA cm(-2), which is the most stable LMA reported so far. When coupling this anode with the Li[Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1]O-2 cathode, the practical full cell further exhibits highly improved capacity retention after 500 cycles.

Abstract:Li metal is a promising anode candidate due to its high theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, dendrite formation and the resulting dead Li cause continuous Li consumption, which hinders its practical application. In this study, we realized N-doped nanoporous carbon for a stable Li metal host composed only of lightweight elements C and N through the simple calcination of a nitrogen-containing metal–organic framework (MOF). During the calcination process, we effectively controlled the amount of lithophilic N and the electrical conductivity of the N-doped porous carbons to optimize their performance as Li metal hosts. As a result, the N-doped porous carbon exhibited excellent electrochemical performances, including 95.8% coulombic efficiency and 91% capacity retention after 150 cycles in a full cell with an LFP cathode. The N-doped nanoporous carbon developed in this study can realize a stable Li metal host without adding lithium ion metals and metal oxides, etc., which is expected to provide an efficient approach for reliable Li metal anodes in secondary battery applications.

Abstract:Use of a protective coating on a lithium metal anode (LMA) is an effective approach to enhance its coulombic efficiency and cycling stability. Here, a facile approach to produce uniform silver nanoparticle‐decorated LMA for high‐performance Li metal batteries (LMBs) is reported. This effective treatment can lead to well‐controlled nucleation and the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Ag nanoparticles embedded in the surface of Li anodes induce uniform Li plating/stripping morphologies with reduced overpotential. More importantly, cross‐linked lithium fluoride‐rich interphase formed during Ag+ reduction enables a highly stable SEI layer. Based on the Ag‐LiF decorated anodes, LMBs with LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 cathode (≈1.8 mAh cm−2) can retain >80% capacity over 500 cycles. The similar approach can also be used to treat sodium metal anodes. Excellent stability (80% capacity retention in 10 000 cycles) is obtained for a Na||Na3V2(PO4)3 full cell using a Na‐Ag‐NaF/Na anode cycled in carbonate electrolyte. These results clearly indicate that synergetic control of the nucleation and SEI is an efficient approach to stabilize rechargeable metal batteries.

Abstract:Nonuniform local electric field and few nucleation sites on the reactive interface tend to cause detrimental lithium (Li) dendrites, which incur severe safety hazards and hamper the practical application of Li metal anodes in batteries. Herein, a carbon nanofiber (CNF) mat decorated with ultrafine titanium nitride (TiN) nanoparticles (CNF‐TiN) as both current collector and host material is reported for Li metal anodes. Uniform Li deposition is achieved by a synergetic effect of lithiophilic TiN and 3D CNF configuration with a highly conductive network. Theoretical calculations reveal that Li prefers to be adsorbed onto the TiN sheath with a low diffusion energy barrier, leading to controllable nucleation sites and dendrite‐free Li deposits. Moreover, the pseudocapacitive behavior of TiN identified through kinetics analysis is favorable for ultrafast Li+ storage and the charge transfer process, especially under a high plating/stripping rate. The CNF‐TiN‐modified Li anodes deliver lower nucleation overpotential for Li plating and superior electrochemical performance under a large current density (200 cycles at 3 mA cm−2) and high capacity (100 cycles with 6 mAh cm−2), as well as a long‐running lifespan (>600 h). The CNF‐TiN‐based full cells using lithium iron phosphate and sulfur cathodes exhibit excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:Li metal is regarded as the most attractive anode because of its high specific capacity, low reduction potential, and low density. However, low coulombic efficiency and the formation of Li dendrites cause challenges in short cycle life and safety issues, highlighting a need for an innovative design of lithium metal anode with high areal capacity, high rate capability and high safety. Herein, we demonstrate a nanostructured lithium metal anode with stable solid electrolyte interface achieved by electro-deposition of Li metal in a commercial carbon fiber cloth matrix. The as-obtained composite Li metal anode with a high areal capacity of 10 mA h cm(-2) can mitigate volume expansion and suppress the formation of dendrites effectively, which cycle in both ether and ester electrolyte with high current density and large capacity, showing an exceptionally low overpotential of 18 mV and stable cycle over 350 cycles. A full cell with LiFePO4 cathode can stable cycle at 10 C for 200 cycles with only 5.6% capacity fading, and the general applicability also demonstrated by full cell paired with LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2.

Abstract:Dendrite-free lithium (Li) has been the primary issue for the practical application of metallic Li anode. Repeated Li plating/stripping is known to inevitably lead to severe volume changes and gradual Li dendrite growth, eventually resulting in irreversible Li (called dead-Li) as an unexpected feature. In order to avoid the dead-Li, a lithiophilic surface is highly desirable and a nanoarchitectured host for metallic Li is also required. Herein, cobalt-embedded, mesoporous, nitrogen-doped graphite (N-doped graphite) is strategically proposed as new innovative Li-metal storage host. After tuning the surface chemistry, the material shows high Li ion affinity as well as a highly lithiophilic surface, which is attributed to the low formation energy of N-doped graphite, strongly supported by density functional theory calculations. As a result, the desirable anode shows excellent electrochemical performance with high Li-metal reversible capacity and even stable long-term cyclability with no dead-Li formation. Our findings pave the way to optimize the Li-metal host up to the limit of the theoretical capacity.

Synergistic Modulation of Li Nucleation/growth Enabled by CNTs-wrapped Lithiophilic CoP/Co2P Decorated Hollow Carbon Polyhedron Host for Stable Lithium Metal Anodes

Abstract:Infinite volume expansion and uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth are the main bottlenecks that greatly hinder the commercial application of lithium metal anodes. Herein, derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-67, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-wrapped and CoP/Co 2 P uniformly distributed nitrogen-doped hollow porous polyhedron carbon (CNT-CoP@NC) is elaborately designed as lithium metal host. A hybrid of N-doping and metallic phosphides modifications improves the lithiophilicity and reduces the nucleation barrier, consequently leading to homogeneous nucleation and smooth deposition of metallic lithium, thus suppresses the growth of Li dendrites. Meanwhile, self-generated CNTs arrays efficiently reduce the local current density. Moreover, the reduced lithium is preferentially deposited into the hollow structure of CNT-CoP@NC and then filled the voids among the CNT-CoP@NC particles. This all-pervasive Li plating design can not only alleviate the volume effect, but also maximize the anode space utilization. Benefiting from these synergistic modulations, even with an ultra-thin (7.2 µm) anode layer of CNT-CoP@NC host, a high Coulombic efficiency for more than 400 cycles and an extended lifespan of 1,700 h under 1 mA·cm −2 can be achieved. When paired with a competitive high mass loading (17.1 mg·cm −2 ) LiFePO 4 cathode, a superb cycling stability (126.7 mAh·g −1 over 550 cycles) is recorded at 1 C.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries are promising candidates for next generation high energy batteries. However, an undesirable dendrite growth hinders their practical applications. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon nanotube film decorated with Ag nanoparticles (CNT/Ag) has been synthesizedviathe thermal decomposition reaction of AgNO(3)into Ag nanoparticles, and then is transformed into a 3D porous CNT/Ag/Li filmviathermal infusion to obtain a high-performance free-standing lithium host. This as-formed 3D CNT/Ag/Li host can effectively restrain the dendrite growth by guiding Li depositionviathe highly lithiophilic Ag nanoparticle seeds and lowering local current density of the highly conductive matrix. Abstract:For future applications in portable electronics, electric vehicles and grid storage, batteries with higher energy storage density than existing lithium ion batteries need to be developed. Recent efforts in this direction have focused on high-capacity electrode materials such as lithium metal, silicon and tin as anodes, and sulphur and oxygen as cathodes. Lithium metal would be the optimal choice as an anode material, because it has the highest specific capacity (3,860 mAh g –1 ) and the lowest anode potential of all. However, the lithium anode forms dendritic and mossy metal deposits, leading to serious safety concerns and low Coulombic efficiency during charge/discharge cycles. Although advanced characterization techniques have helped shed light on the lithium growth process, effective strategies to improve lithium metal anode cycling remain elusive. Here, we show that coating the lithium metal anode with a monolayer of interconnected amorphous hollow carbon nanospheres helps isolate the lithium metal depositions and facilitates the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase. We show that lithium dendrites do not form up to a practical current density of 1 mA cm –2 . The Coulombic efficiency improves to ∼99% for more than 150 cycles. This is significantly better than the bare unmodified samples, which usually show rapid Coulombic efficiency decay in fewer than 100 cycles. Our results indicate that nanoscale interfacial engineering could be a promising strategy to tackle the intrinsic problems of lithium metal anodes.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal anode is one of the most promising candidates for next-generation storage system due to its high theorectical capacity. However, the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites still incurs serious safety issues and poor electrochemical performances, hindering the practical application of Li metal anode. Herein, oxygen and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon granules (ONPCGs) with high specific surface area (2396 m(2) g(-1)) made from polyacrylonitrile powder were used as the host material for Li plating. The lithiophilic oxygen and nitrogen-containing functional groups could guide a uniform Li nucleation deposition, and the high specific surface area of ONPCGs could lower the regional electrical field effectively, boosting stable and homogeneous Li plating. Therefore, the ONPCG modified electrode delivered a stable Li plating/stripping with high Coulombic efficiencies > 99% for over 350 cycles at a current of 2 mA cm(-2) and Li capacity of 2 mAh cm(-2), with a Coulombic efficiency of 96.4% after 130 cycles at a current of 20 mA cm(-2). Even at exceptional high current density of 30 mA cm(-2), it could stably being cycled for over 110 cycles. Furthermore, the full cells, using sulfurized carbon as cathode and ONPCGs@Li as anode, could also demonstrate excellent cycle and rate performances.

Abstract:Nitrogen‐doped graphene mesh (NGM) has been developed as a novel host for Li metal anodes (LMAs), where the lithiophilic N dopants enable uniform Li nucleation, and the abundant nanopores serve as shortcuts for facilitating Li ion transport. These design features contribute to the excellent cycling stability of LMAs, even under the conditions of high current rates and large areal capacities. Hosts hold great prospects for addressing the dendrite growth and volume expansion of the Li metal anode, but Li dendrites are still observable under the conditions of high deposition capacity and/or high current density. Herein, a nitrogen‐doped graphene mesh (NGM) is developed, which possesses a conductive and lithiophilic scaffold for efficient Li deposition. The abundant nanopores in NGM can not only provide sufficient room for Li deposition, but also speed up Li ion transport to achieve a high‐rate capability. Moreover, the evenly distributed N dopants on the NGM can guide the uniform nucleation of Li so that to inhibit dendrite growth. As a result, the composite NGM@Li anode shows satisfactory electrochemical performances for Li–S batteries, including a high capacity of 600 mAh g−1 after 300 cycles at 1 C and a rate capacity of 438 mAh g−1 at 3 C. This work provides a new avenue for the fabrication of graphene‐based hosts with large areal capacity and high‐rate capability for Li metal batteries.

3D Lithiophilic Host Comprising Co2P Nanosheets and ZnO Nanorods for Stable Li Metal Anode

Abstract:Within the domain of lithium metal batteries (LMBs), the integration of three-dimensional (3D) composite lithium metal anodes emerges as a critical strategy to combat dendrite growth. However, traditional challenges such as poor lithophilicity of 3D hosts and nonuniform charge distribution from imbalanced ion/electron transport typically undermine electrochemical performance. Herein, we present a 3D lithiophilic host comprising Co2P nanosheets and ZnO nanorods for stable Li metal anode. The 3D configuration of carbon cloth drastically reduces local current density during lithium deposition, while nanoscale lithophilic ZnO bestows 3D framework with sufficient lithophilic sites, thereby substantially lowering the energy barrier for lithium nucleation. The Co2P nanosheets interact with Li to form uniformly distributed Co nanoparticles within the Li3P phase, which is replete with ionic and electronic pathways. This Li3P interphase, characterized by high Li+ conductivity, effectively lowers the Li+ diffusion barrier. Simultaneously, the uniformly distributed electron-conductive cobalt domains help ensure a well-distributed current density, promoting an even distribution of Li+ flux at the interface. Consequently, such a lithium anode evidences superior interface kinetics and extended cycling stability. Additionally, full cells outfitted with LiFePO4 (LFP) cathodes demonstrate marked enhancements in both rate performance and cycling stability. This breakthrough marks a notable advance toward the realization of a stable lithium anode for high-energy-density LMBs.
Metal Nitride Heterostructures Capsulated in Carbon Nanospheres to Accommodate Lithium Metal for Constructing a Stable Composite Anode

Abstract:Although various hosts have been proposed to accommodate the Lithium (Li) metal to solve the uneven Li deposition and infinite volume change, the pulverization of the host or lithiophilic modification layer easily leads to structural damage and the poor cycling stability of the composite anode. Herein, we design a host of metal nitrides (Mo2N and WN heterostructures) nanoparticles capsulated in the hollow carbon nanospheres, which can accommodate Li metal to form a stable composite anode. The lithiophilic Mo2N guides uniform infusion and reduces the nucleation barriers of Li metal during electrochemical process. Note that the rigid WN matrix is uniformly composited with Mo2N, which can suppress the pulverization of Mo2N during the repeat Li plating/stripping, ensuring the stability of regulated deposition during long cycling. High mechanical strength, uniform surface potential distribution and good electrolyte wettability of the Li metal-based composite anode guarantee the rapid Li plating/stripping kinetics. Thus, the obtained composite anode can stably cycle 1400 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1 mA h cm-2 in the symmetric battery. The assembled full cells with LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NCM811) also deliver high capacity retention under the high loading (8.6 mg cm-2) or lean electrolyte (2 μL mg-1) condition. This work suggests a promising host structure design to construct a highly stable lithium metal anode for practical applications.
Regulating Lithium Nucleation and Deposition on Carbon Cloth Decorated with Vertically Aligned Ag-doped MnO2 2 Nanosheet Arrays for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anode

Abstract:Metallic Li with high specific capacity and low electrode potential is considered as the most promising anode material. The main obstacles to its application are uncontrollable Li dendrites growth and infinite volume changes. Herein, we design a modified carbon cloth (CC) by vertically aligned MnO2 2 nanosheet arrays embedded with tiny Ag (Ag/MnO2@CC) 2 @CC) through hydrothermal approach. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that MnO2 2 and Ag show a more negative adsorption energy (-4.31 and-2.34 eV) than C (-1.65 eV), implying their better lithiophilicity. Finite element simulations demonstrate that the Ag-doped MnO2 2 nanosheet arrays reduce local current density and redistribute Li-ion flux. Moreover, the channels assembled by vertical- aligned MnO2 2 nanosheets and 3D CC can offer sufficient spaces to buffer volume fluctuation during cycling. Accordingly, the Ag/MnO2@CC 2 @CC is employed as a lithiophilic host to supervise homogenous Li nucleation and deposition. The Ag/MnO2@CC 2 @CC electrodeposited with Li exhibits dendrite-free feature and a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.9% during 300 cycles. The symmetric cell shows an ultra-low polarization voltage of 14 mV over 1300 h at 1 mA cm-- 2 with the capacity of 1 mAh cm-1 . The full cell paired with LiFePO4 4 exhibits excellent capacity of 105.5 mAh g-1 after 400 cycles at 1 C.
