Abstract:At a press conference on 20 April the Chinese minister of health admitted that there had been failings over the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) epidemic: the situation was more serious than had been admitted previously. Along with the mayor of Beijing he was promptly fired. But the speech had had the desired effect: public health action had finally been galvanised.galvanised. Figure 1 A dubious measure? T HESKETH I live in Zhejiang, a coastal province halfway between the two Chinese epicentres of the disease, Guangdong and Beijing. Here following the press conference, the government immediately held an emergency meeting. By the next morning a whole raft of measures was in place. All cinemas, theatres, and karaoke bars were closed. All public training courses and meetings and all school outings were cancelled. All buses, trains, taxis, train stations, bus stations, airports were to be disinfected. The May Day holiday was cancelled. But there was much more: at 7 am we were handed a leaflet about SARS prevention at the gate of our compound. This included advice about regular hand washing, warnings about crowded places, and the dangers of nose picking. It advised that masks should be 16 layers thick and changed every four hours. At our sons' school chaos ensued as 600 children were having their temperatures taken before being allowed into class. They would have their temperatures taken twice daily until further notice. Any recording over 38°C would result in the child's immediate removal to hospital. By 9 am our residential compound had been disinfected, and we had been offered free disinfection of our apartment. Masks and thermometers were sold out by mid-morning. Supermarkets were busy with people stocking up to batten down for the duration. Usually jam packed buses had plenty of spare seats as people took to bikes as a safer option. The next day I was scheduled to go to Yunnan province in the south west of the country. The trip necessitated six flights in a week. On the outward journey around 20% of passengers were wearing masks, and a health declaration had to be completed before boarding each flight. At two hotels I had to take my temperature before being allowed to check in. On the return journey mask wearing had increased to over 80%, health declaration forms were required before departure, on arrival, and in one case during the flight as well. In addition, passengers' temperatures were taken in-flight. At the local airport in Zhejiang infrared imaging was in use. But with just one camera for all domestic flights, the crush of passengers probably just increased the potential for SARS transmission. The China SARS story is instructive in a number of ways. Firstly, as many commentators in China and elsewhere have pointed out, the failure to acknowledge the problem earlier has almost certainly resulted in a more widespread epidemic. The government is painfully aware of this, and the high profile sackings (almost unknown in China, except in cases of corruption) demonstrate just how seriously the mistakes are regarded. Though there have been significant moves towards greater transparency over the past decade in areas regarded as sensitive by the Chinese, the SARS secrecy debacle is certain to accelerate this process. Secondly, it demonstrates that once China has decided to mount a campaign it can do it with speed and aggression over a vast area, in a way that must be the envy of many other countries. The public health network allows for rapid dissemination of information down to the grassroots. Provincial level health bureau staff have been dispatched in great numbers to the countryside to ensure that all appropriate preventive measures are being taken and to ensure that identified cases are managed correctly. Even in remote rural Yunnan, health workers I spoke to knew about SARS. In a township hospital a doctor told me he wasn't afraid of SARS, because he had ribavirin (at a cost of 5 US cents per tablet) to treat it. He would isolate any case immediately, and treat free of charge. While many of the preventive measures are of dubious effectiveness—all that disinfection, and all those schoolchildren taking their temperatures, for example—frightened people find all the activity reassuring. Finally, China needs to change the name of this disease. Currently SARS is called fei dian xing fei yan, which translates as atypical pneumonia. I believe that at least some of the earlier under-reporting, which has proved so damaging, was related to failure to realise that this was a new form of pneumonia, and not just a more severe form of atypical pneumonia, for which the causative organism is frequently not isolated. This new disease needs a proper Chinese christening.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To summarize lessons learned from an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in China during the spring of 2004.METHODS:Data of SARS cases were officially reported by Beijing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention (BCDC) and Anhui Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention (APCDC) and results of epidemiological investigations were collected and analyzed.RESULTS:Three generations of 11 cases of SARS were identified during the outbreak. Initial two cases were most likely to be infected in Diarrhea Virus Laboratory of National Institute of Virology, China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and main mode of transmission was direct contact with SARS patients. Delay in detecting initial case resulted in spread of the illness at hospitals and communities with two generations of secondary cases.CONCLUSIONS:SARS outbreak in 2004 has yielded following lessons for public health globally. (1) Lab bio-safety programs should be made and should be strictly abided by. Studies in highly pathogenic viruses such as SARS coronavirus should be utmost cautious. (2) Management systems of occupational exposure to virus and disease surveillance need to be strengthened to take all risk factors into account so as to detect potential patients with infectious disease as early as possible.

Abstract:Abstract Objectives To provide an overview of the three major deadly coronaviruses and identify areas for improvement of future preparedness plans, as well as provide a critical assessment of the risk factors and actionable items for stopping their spread, utilizing lessons learned from the first two deadly coronavirus outbreaks, as well as initial reports from the current novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic in Wuhan, China. Methods Utilizing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, USA) website, and a comprehensive review of PubMed literature, we obtained information regarding clinical signs and symptoms, treatment and diagnosis, transmission methods, protection methods and risk factors for Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and COVID-19. Comparisons between the viruses were made. Results Inadequate risk assessment regarding the urgency of the situation, and limited reporting on the virus within China has, in part, led to the rapid spread of COVID-19 throughout mainland China and into proximal and distant countries. Compared with SARS and MERS, COVID-19 has spread more rapidly, due in part to increased globalization and the focus of the epidemic. Wuhan, China is a large hub connecting the North, South, East and West of China via railways and a major international airport. The availability of connecting flights, the timing of the outbreak during the Chinese (Lunar) New Year, and the massive rail transit hub located in Wuhan has enabled the virus to perforate throughout China, and eventually, globally. Conclusions We conclude that we did not learn from the two prior epidemics of coronavirus and were ill-prepared to deal with the challenges the COVID-19 epidemic has posed. Future research should attempt to address the uses and implications of internet of things (IoT) technologies for mapping the spread of infection.

Abstract:<p>There is a current worldwide outbreak of the novel coronavirus Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019; the pathogen called SARS-CoV-2; previously 2019-nCoV), which originated from Wuhan in China and has now spread to 6 continents including 66 countries, as of 24:00 on March 2, 2020. Governments are under increased pressure to stop the outbreak spiraling into a global health emergency. At this stage, preparedness, transparency, and sharing of information are crucial to risk assessments and beginning outbreak control activities. This information should include reports from outbreak site and from laboratories supporting the investigation. This paper aggregates and consolidates the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatments and preventions of this new type of coronavirus.</p>

Abstract:Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is now a global public health threat with many medical, ethical, social, economic, political, and legal implications. The nonspecific signs and symptoms of this disease, coupled with a relatively long incubation period and the initial absence of a reliable diagnostic test, limited the understanding of the magnitude of the outbreak. This paper outlines our experience with public health issues that have arisen during this outbreak of SARS in Hong Kong. We confirmed that case detection, reporting, clear and timely dissemination of information, and strict infection control measures are essential in handling such an infectious disease outbreak. The need for an outbreak response unit is crucial to combat any future outbreak.

Abstract:After the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in November 2002, coronaviruses (CoVs) received worldwide attention. On December 1, 2019, the first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), was reported in Wuhan, China, and CoVs returned to public view. On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the COVID-19 epidemic is a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), and on March 11, 2020, the WHO classified COVID-19 as a pandemic disease. As of July 31, 2020, COVID-19 has affected 216 countries and regions, with 17,064,064 confirmed cases and 668,073 deaths, and the number of new cases has been increasing daily. Additionally, on March 19, 2020, there were no new confirmed cases in China, providing hope and valuable experience for the international community. In this review, we systematically compare COVID-19 and SARS in terms of epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical characteristics and discuss the current treatment approaches, scientific advancements and Chinese experience in fighting the epidemic to combat the novel coronavirus pandemic. We also discuss the lessons that we have learned from COVID-19 and SARS.

Abstract:The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is a novel zoonotic pathogen. In 2012, the infectious outbreak caused by MERS-CoV in Saudi Arabia has spread to more than 1600 patients in 26 countries, resulting in over 600 deaths.Without a travel history, few clinical and radiological features can reliably differentiate MERS from SARS. But in real world, comparing with SARS, MERS presents more vaguely defined epidemiology, more severe symptoms, and higher case fatality rate. In this review, we summarize the recent findings in the field of MERS-CoV, especially its molecular virology, interspecies mechanisms, clinical features, antiviral therapies, and the further investigation into this disease. As a newly emerging virus, many questions are not fully answered, including the exact mode of transmission chain, geographical distribution, and animal origins. Furthermore, a new protocol needs to be launched to rapidly evaluate the effects of unproven antiviral drugs and vaccine to fasten the clinical application of new drugs.

Abstract:Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a newly emerging infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV), which has overwhelmed more than 30 countries claiming nearly 8400 cases with over 800 fatalities. Thanks to the unprecedented international collaboration, the whole-genomes of SARS-CoVs were successfully deciphered shortly after the identification of the causative pathogen for outbreak of SARS in southern China, in 2003. Hitherto, the SARS-CoV, as a viral paradigm of emerging infectious entities, has been extensively studied that has ranged from epidemiology, molecular virology/immunology to structural genomics. Also, several lines of breakthroughs have been record-brokenly obtained, that included the finding of ACE2, a functional receptor for the SARS-CoV, solution of the 3CLpro structure, a first crystal structure of SARS-related macromolecules, revealing of bats as natural reservoirs for SARS-like viruses and the possible involvement of civet cats in the SARS emergence. This review intends to outline the major progress in the journey of SARS-related exploration, by emphasizing those inaugurated studies with milestone-like significance contributed by Chinese research groups.

Abstract:In December 2019, a cluster of fatal pneumonia cases presented in Wuhan, China. They were caused by a previously unknown coronavirus. All patients had been associated with the Wuhan Wholefood market, where seafood and live animals are sold. The virus spread rapidly and public health authorities in China initiated a containment effort. However, by that time, travelers had carried the virus to many countries, sparking memories of the previous coronavirus epidemics, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and causing widespread media attention and panic. Based on clinical criteria and available serological and molecular information, the new disease was called coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), and the novel coronavirus was called SARS Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), emphasizing its close relationship to the 2002 SARS virus (SARS-CoV). The scientific community raced to uncover the origin of the virus, understand the pathogenesis of the disease, develop treatment options, define the risk factors, and work on vaccine development. Here we present a summary of current knowledge regarding the novel coronavirus and the disease it causes.

Abstract:An ongoing outbreak of pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus, currently designated as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), was reported recently. However, as SARS-CoV-2 is an emerging virus, we know little about it. In this review, we summarize the key events occurred during the early stage of SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, the basic characteristics of the pathogen, the signs and symptoms of the infected patients as well as the possible transmission pathways of the virus. Furthermore, we also review the current knowledge on the origin and evolution of the SARS-CoV-2. We highlight bats as the potential natural reservoir and pangolins as the possible intermediate host of the virus, but their roles are waiting for further investigation. Finally, the advances in the development of chemotherapeutic options are also briefly summarized.

Abstract:SARS-CoV-2 has attracted the attention of nearly the whole world during the last four years. It is a Corona virus that is responsible for the deaths of millions. It is responsible for economic corruption in many countries. As a response, excessive vaccination programs were installed everywhere. But many variants are elevated, and the virus proves its ability to escape from the immune system because of different mutations. The progress in different scientific domains—instrumentation, bioinformatics, and the like—makes fast vaccine development easier. As a response, new strategies were introduced, including new vaccine production and administration strategies, genomic surveillance, immunopeptidome, gene sequencing, and the like, to enable the vaccine to cover all the targeted populations at the correct time and to install an early alarm system against any elevated new variants. This review contains more information about some important stations in the history of vaccine development and the strategies invented by scientists to control different viruses and other microbes. Some important issues that might influence the type of vaccine used for SARS-CoV-2 are addressed. They include their symptoms, the virus evasion of the innate immune system, the response of adaptive immunity, and the like. Although the world still needs to better understand the SARS-CoV-2 behavior to win the war against it, previous historical successful vaccine productions, important examples, and stations during the human struggle against the viruses are described and discussed.

Abstract:COVID-19 is the latest zoonotic RNA virus epidemic of concern. Learning how it began and spread will help to determine how to reduce the risk of future events. We review major RNA virus outbreaks since 1967 to identify common features and opportunities to prevent emergence, including ancestral viral origins in birds, bats, and other mammals; animal reservoirs and intermediate hosts; and pathways for zoonotic spillover and community spread, leading to local, regional, or international outbreaks. The increasing scientific evidence concerning the origins of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is most consistent with a zoonotic origin and a spillover pathway from wildlife to people via wildlife farming and the wildlife trade. We apply what we know about these outbreaks to identify relevant, feasible, and implementable interventions. We identify three primary targets for pandemic prevention and preparedness: first, smart surveillance coupled with epidemiological risk assessment across wildlife-livestock-human (One Health) spillover interfaces; second, research to enhance pandemic preparedness and expedite development of vaccines and therapeutics; and third, strategies to reduce underlying drivers of spillover risk and spread and reduce the influence of misinformation. For all three, continued efforts to improve and integrate biosafety and biosecurity with the implementation of a One Health approach are essential. We discuss new models to address the challenges of creating an inclusive and effective governance structure, with the necessary stable funding for cross-disciplinary collaborative research. Finally, we offer recommendations for feasible actions to close the knowledge gaps across the One Health continuum and improve preparedness and response in the future.

Abstract:SARS is a new kind of pneumonia. From the end of 2002 to the beginning of 2003, SARS broke in Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Beijing, and then gradually spread to the world. SARS is extremely contagious. The symptoms of SARS progress very quickly. SARS smashes the people's tranquil life and many people live in horror, worry and anxiety. But if we review the medical history of pneumonia, we would have a better understanding of SARS. This article focuses the history of people's understanding of pneumonia on the historical documents, diagnosis, etiology and treatment. Through the epidemic of SARS, the author hopes to express that contagion will live with us for a long time, but it is not a deadly disease. It is preventable and good care is essential for contagious patients. As Chinese people, we should have the best use of TCM in our combat with contagion.

SARS in China: Prelude to Pandemic?Stanford: Stanford University Press, 2006. X, 244 pp. Hardcover $50.00, ISBN 0-804-753.3-X. Paperback $19.95, ISBN 0-804-753.4-8. Historically, a number of major epidemics have had their origin in China, including the 1957 Asian flu, the 1968 Hong Kong flu, and the 1977 Russian flu. As the first global health crisis of the twenty-first century, SARS posed a serious threat to international health security, the functioning of health systems, and the stability of economies and societies worldwide. As the two editors of this volume observe, the local response evident in China was "as much a consequence of the global reaction to SARS as a reaction to the infection itself " (p. 2). Therefore, SARS in China not only makes a significant contribution to China studies but also provides important clues about the state of preparation for global health challenges such as avian flu. There is no shortage of literature pertaining to the topic of this volume. What makes SARS in China different is that it suggests a new approach to understanding [End Page 177] human epidemics. Challenging the "isolationist and elitist conventions" of traditional academic disciplines, the volume provides an extensive and comprehensive treatise on the SARS outbreak in China. The contributing authors have examined almost all the major aspects of the epidemic-epidemiological, political, economic, social, cultural, psychological, and moral. They are from disciplines covering anthropology, political science, sociology, psychiatry, economics, and epidemiology. They include both scholars and practitioners-indeed, several of the authors themselves were on the frontlines of the battle to understand and control SARS. The editors have done an excellent job to make sure that this manifold and transdisciplinary perspective does not compromise the coherence and clarity of the volume. Perhaps equally important, the book as a whole not only addresses SARS as a mirror reflecting the macro-historical process or a way of illustrating changing public health practices, but also discusses its possible role as the causative agent of social, economic, and political change. Unlike the tremendous media coverage of SARS, the book situates the unfolding of the disease in the context of popular fears and of economic and political process at the national and international levels. In particular, it recognizes the importance of "rational bureaucratic language, biomedical knowledge, and political ideologies" in shaping the social response to SARS (p. 3). In chapter 2, Megan Murray observes that one of the main challenges in containing SARS was a general medical and epidemiological uncertainty. Even today, epidemiologists still do not have a clear idea about the origin, transmission, virulence, and sustainability of SARS. In chapter 7, Lee and Wing imply that this lack of biomedical knowledge, coupled with the difficulty of controlling the behaviors that cause the transmission of the disease and the absence of effective treatment, had the potential for reinforcing and intensifying popular fears. The fear and anxiety of the unknown is suggested by the outpouring of SARS-related humor and jokes across the country during the crisis. Yet, as Hong Zhang argues convincingly in chapter 8, these widespread SARS-related jokes not only answered psychological needs but also spoke to "the emergence of a degree of government latitude [that] allows the public to engage in different modes of expression and to voice social criticisms and dissatisfactions" (p. 166). Like the SARS-related jokes and humor, stigmatization became a weapon that allowed the society to cope with the uncertainties and fear. What Kleinman and Lee suggest in chapter 9 is that the indigenous Chinese model of stigma carries particularly strong moral, emotional, and social consequences, given the crucial role that social networks play in regulating individual behavior and the lack of development of advocacy and legal measures against discrimination in China. The fear and panic were further magnified by the initial government cover-up and subsequent reverse course in responding to SARS. The chapters by Alan Schnur, Joan Kaufman, Tony Saich, and Erik Eckholm reveal two critical weaknesses [End Page 178] inherent in an authoritarian system: first, authoritarian countries lack effective feedback...

Abstract:Since the spread of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), China has launched an unprecedented fight against the epidemic. At the beginning of the outbreak, China responded quickly by informing the World Health Organization (WHO) and sharing sequence information internationally soon after the draft genome of the virus was revealed by Chinese researchers. China’s effort in transparency, data sharing and quick response for controlling the outbreak was praised by the international community. Although the outbreak is not over yet, the important consideration for this and future outbreaks has aroused wide public discussion. This article is aimed to identify the lessons we could learn from the outbreak and propose suggestions for future improvement from aspects including improving the public health and disease control and prevention system, improving the emergency response mechanism, promoting technological innovation, and increasing medical supplies and reserves. An enhanced holistic system is in urgent need for disease control and prevention through strengthening the public health and disease control and prevention system, improving the emergency response system, building relevant legal system, and establishing a national biosafety system. Future outbreaks might be inevitable, but we can save more lives and avoid much financial loss by effective countermeasures when public health emergency happens.

This study examines how this novel disease threat was depicted in the UK newspapers, using social representations theory and in particular existing work on social representations of HIV/AIDS and Ebola to analyse the meanings of the epidemic. It investigates the way that SARS was presented as a dangerous threat to the UK public, whilst almost immediately the threat was said to be 'contained' using the mechanism of 'othering': SARS was said to be unlikely to personally affect the UK reader because the Chinese were so different to 'us'; so 'other'. In this sense, the SARS scare, despite the remarkable speed with which it was played out in the modern global news media, resonates with the meanings attributed to other epidemics of infectious diseases throughout history. Yet this study also highlights a number of differences in the social representations of SARS compared with earlier epidemics. In particular, this study examines the phenomena of 'emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases' over the past 30 or so years and suggests that these have impacted on the faith once widely held that Western biomedicine could 'conquer' infectious disease.

Abstract:The SARS-CoV-2 outbreak that emerged at the end of 2019 has affected more than 58 million people with more than 1.38 million deaths and has had an incalculable impact on the world . Extensive prevention and treatment measures have been implemented since the pandemic. In this Review, we summarize current understanding on the source, transmission characteristics, and pathogenic mechanism of SARS-CoV-2. We also detail the recent development of diagnostic methods and potential treatment strategies of COVID-19 with focus on the ongoing clinical trials of antibodies, vaccines, and inhibitors for combating the emerging coronavirus.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The recent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, previously known as 2019-nCoV) outbreak has engulfed an unprepared world amidst a festive season. The zoonotic SARS-CoV-2, believed to have originated from infected bats, is the seventh member of enveloped RNA coronavirus. Specifically, the overall genome sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 is 96.2% identical to that of bat coronavirus termed BatCoV RaTG13. Although the current mortality rate of 2% is significantly lower than that of SARS (9.6%) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) (35%), SARS-CoV-2 is highly contagious and transmissible from human to human with an incubation period of up to 24 days. Some statistical studies have shown that, on average, one infected patient may lead to a subsequent 5.7 confirmed cases. Since the first reported case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the SARS-CoV-2 on December 1, 2019, in Wuhan, China, there has been a total of 60,412 confirmed cases with 1370 fatalities reported in 25 different countries as of February 13, 2020. The outbreak has led to severe impacts on social health and the economy at various levels. This paper is a review of the significant, continuous global effort that was made to respond to the outbreak in the first 75 days. Although no vaccines have been discovered yet, a series of containment measures have been implemented by various governments, especially in China, in the effort to prevent further outbreak, whilst various medical treatment approaches have been used to successfully treat infected patients. On the basis of current studies, it would appear that the combined antiviral treatment has shown the highest success rate. This review aims to critically summarize the most recent advances in understanding the coronavirus, as well as the strategies in prevention and treatment.

Abstract:The COVID‐19 pandemic caught the world largely unprepared, including scientific and policy communities. On April 10–13, 2022, researchers across academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations met at the Keystone symposium "Lessons from the Pandemic: Responding to Emerging Zoonotic Viral Diseases" to discuss successes and challenges of the COVID‐19 pandemic and what lessons can be applied moving forward. The COVID‐19 pandemic caught the world largely unprepared, including scientific and policy communities. On April 10–13, 2022, researchers across academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations met at the Keystone symposium "Lessons from the Pandemic: Responding to Emerging Zoonotic Viral Diseases" to discuss the successes and challenges of the COVID‐19 pandemic and what lessons can be applied moving forward. Speakers focused on experiences not only from the COVID‐19 pandemic but also from outbreaks of other pathogens, including the Ebola virus, Lassa virus, and Nipah virus. A general consensus was that investments made during the COVID‐19 pandemic in infrastructure, collaborations, laboratory and manufacturing capacity, diagnostics, clinical trial networks, and regulatory enhancements—notably, in low‐to‐middle income countries—must be maintained and strengthened to enable quick, concerted responses to future threats, especially to zoonotic pathogens.

Abstract:On 17 November 2019, the first case of a coronavirus infection that broke the interspecies barrier by transferring from animal to human was recorded in Wuhan in central China. The responsible pathogen was labelled SARS-Cov-2, and the disease it caused was named COVID-19. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organisation announced a pandemic, which after three years took a toll in the form of 760 million confirmed cases, of which almost 7 million ended in death [ Citation 1 ].
