Abstract:Internet rumors will have an impact on consumption, especially irrational consumption. This study uses SEM to examine how Internet rumors is related to irrational consumption. Based on Internet rumors in fast food, this study designed 3(information types: Internet rumors (IRS), Advertisements (ADS), Negative news (NNS)) × 2 (involvement level: high (HIL), low (LIL)) between-subjects experiments to test the moderating role of information type and involvement level. The results reveal that Perceived risk partially mediated the relationship between information reliability and Re-diffusion intention under three scenarios. Perceived risk has partially mediation effects between information reliability and Re-diffusion intention in IRS, while completely mediation effects in NNS. Information reliability has direct effect on purchase intention in ADS. The Information reliability is lowest in IRS, which means although consumers believe the information is false, the rumors still affects their behavior significantly. The study found that people with HIL are generally more willing to purchase, and have more accurate judgements of information authenticity. The purchase intention of consumers is higher(lower) for HIL than LIL in ADS and IRS(NNS). This research also gives suggestions for merchants and consumers.
