Abstract:High excretion of PHPL was observed in many pathological subjects. In these, excretion of PHPP and tyrosine was often also abnormally high and other compounds were sometimes detected. A screening test for gross tyrosyluria was devised. Tyrosinosis proved difficult to distinguish from cases of temporary tyrosyluria presenting similar clinical symptoms. Increased excretion of PHPL served as a useful index of postoperative stress; conversely stress may account for tyrosyluria in some ill subjects. Excretion of VLA was found to be associated with that of PHPL and was not dependent on the production of large quantities of DOPA.Attempts to detect free VPA in urine were usually unsuccessful.
