Abstract:Higher education faculty have many responsibilities, with teaching as arguably the most public of those yet also the task for which many are least prepared. Professional development around teaching and learning can provide faculty with the knowledge and skills needed to improve student learning while also improving job satisfaction. The present paper describes the use of faculty learning communities as a best practice for professional development around teaching. Such communities engage a group of participants over time and provide a way to impart knowledge and resources around teaching and learning, encourage application of new skills in the classroom, and evaluate and refect on the effectiveness of those trials. Research shows that time spent in faculty learning communities translates into improvements in both teaching effectiveness and student learning. Resources are provided for administrators interested in developing and supporting faculty learning communities around teaching and learning.

Abstract:Abstract: The Department of Family Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, developed a Preparing Future Faculty and Family Professionals program to enrich the graduate education and professional development of its doctoral students. This article describes key elements of the program, including informing students about the responsibilities of faculty positions at diverse institutions, fostering faculty‐student mentoring relationships, visiting partner colleges/universities, examining requirements of nonacademic family science careers, and preparing students for the job search. Student and faculty evaluations of the program are summarized, and recommendations are made for graduate educators in family science.

Abstract:We have prepared thousands of future STEM faculty around the world to adopt evidence-based instructional practices through their participation in two massive open online courses (MOOCs) and facilitated in-person learning communities. Our novel combination of asynchronous online and coordinated, structured face-to-face learning community experiences provides flexible options for STEM graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to pursue teaching professional development. A total of 14,977 participants enrolled in seven offerings of the introductory course held 2014-2018, with 1,725 participants (11.5% of enrolled) completing the course. Our results of high levels of engagement and learning suggest that leveraging the affordances of educational technologies and the geographically clustered nature of this learner demographic in combination with online flexible learning could be a sustainable model for large scale professional development in higher education. The preparation of future STEM faculty makes an important difference in establishing high-quality instruction that meets the diverse needs of all undergraduate students, and the initiative described here can serve as a model for increasing access to such preparation.

Abstract:In the fall of 2000 the Department of Sociology at North Carolina State University (NCSU) implemented a Phase IV Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) initiative. The goal of this program was (and is) to ensure that doctoral students anticipating entry into a professional position be prepared for all expectations associated with faculty life in a wide variety of college and university placements. NCSU's program combined in-house research mentoring opportunities as well as off-campus mentoring relationships with faculty at other schools to explore the teaching and service responsibilities of junior faculty members. An evaluation committee assessed the effectiveness of this new initiative. Data were collected using several methods, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups. The committee found the PFF program to be a welcome addition to graduate training; however, the NCSU program experienced struggles that provide insight for other schools that may wish to start a PFF program of their own.

Abstract:We present two programs that address needs to better prepare graduate students for their roles as professional physicists, particularly in the areas of teaching and education research. The two programs, Preparing Future Physicists (PFP) and a course, Teaching and Learning Physics, are designed to be mutually supportive, address these broader graduate roles, and support the development of the field of physics education research. While voluntary, PFP has attracted the participation of roughly half the physics graduate students at each of two large research institutions. Compared to the national rate, these students are roughly twice as likely to report an interest in pursuing future roles as educators. While less than one in five of participants surveyed reported education being valued by the research community in physics, more than 90% reported intentions to incorporate the results of research in physics education in their future teaching. Experience with the synergistic program, Teaching and Learning Physics, demonstrates that it is possible to replicate earlier successes of the program initiated at a different institution, including increasing student mastery of physics, developing student interest in education and teaching, and engaging students in research projects in physics education. In addition to introducing these programs, we identify some of the critical features that contribute to their successes.

Abstract:The present study focuses on current efforts underway in one western US state to prepare educators’ for meaningful participation with families. Directors and faculty from 43 accredited Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) preparing pre-service teachers, administrators, and student support personnel were asked to complete an online survey regarding current family–school partnering coursework, practice requirements, and resources. Responses were obtained from 63% of the identified programs. Similar to prior studies, our results indicate that current course offerings and field practice requirements may not match prevailing views regarding the need for and importance of family engagement in promoting student success. Specific recommendations include refocusing coursework, providing alternative field experiences, offering interdisciplinary coursework and projects, and developing ongoing avenues for continued professional development to improve the preparation of future educators to partner with families.

Abstract:Teacher educators have focused reform efforts on preparing graduates to address increasingly diverse K-12 students. Collaboration among general and special education faculty is seen as beneficial for preparing teacher candidates who can teach diverse learners, yet it is not the norm. This practitioner research study explored a curriculum reform effort that employed a faculty learning community (FLC) to engage general and special education faculty to collaboratively integrate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into two teacher education programs. Faculty perceptions of the collaborative reform process and resulting curriculum enhancements are presented. Findings indicated the process was valued by our faculty, promoted a stronger culture of cross-disciplinary collaboration, and resulted in systematic curriculum improvements coordinated across content and field courses. This study offers guidance to teacher education faculty interested in collaborative curriculum reform.

When teaching online, you need to take into consideration the content of the course and the methods in which the students will assimilate knowledge. Abstract:Professional development is a tool that faculty members use to develop knowledge and skills that help them become better teachers. We investigate what influences affect the ways in which faculty take up ideas from professional development programs. By employing the framework of Pedagogical Reasoning and Action, we investigate how faculty take up ideas from a particular Faculty Learning Community (the STEM Teaching & Learning Fellowship) and the factors that influence their instructional and material design choices. We examined influences affecting faculty in three different cases. From these cases, we constructed themes, and examined those themes across all cases using a cross-case analysis. In this multiple case study we find that assessment and instructional alignment, participation in instructional practices, and the culture of the department all influence the extent in which faculty bring new teaching ideas and practices into the classroom. These findings can be leveraged by developers to design and improve programs, as well as inform researchers on future avenues of research.

Abstract:Systemically trained counselors have a distinctive set of skills that make them well suited to prepare teachers to work with students’ families. In this article, we discuss our experiences as family counselors in developing and teaching a required course in family–school collaboration to elementary teachers in training. We first describe the teacher dispositions that need to be developed to support such family–school relationships and the skills possessed by family systems counselors for promoting these dispositions. We then describe the course goals, instructional methods, and course activities, and report the impact of this course experience on our students and ourselves.

Abstract:The training of effective instructors and future faculty members is a critical component of doctoral programs in sociology. Many universities and departments have instituted a single course, course sequence, or certification program dedicated to the preparation of future academic faculty. This article evaluates the efficacy of one such program, and asks two questions: (1) What are the most useful aspects of the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program? (2) Is participation in the PFF program associated with greater job satisfaction, confidence, or competence? Qualitative data from Indiana University alumni suggest that the program is beneficial for exposing students to pedagogical knowledge, encouraging professionalization, and providing institutionalized support in the form of peer and faculty mentorship. Quantitative data indicate that although PFF participants were not significantly more satisfied or confident than their nonparticipating peers, the PFF program did appear to help to make participants feel more competent in their first jobs.

Abstract:Introduction: Complex and continuous developments in health and healthcare require innovative changes in programs that educate public health scientists and professionals. Public health change agents need critical competencies to confront today and tomorrow's leading problems including leadership, communication, interprofessional practice, and systems thinking. The context challenges in public health education: Public Health training programs teach competencies through their applied field experience and culminating project, typically late in the program, and often implemented in isolation from peers and faculty. Objectives and skills do not always align closely with community-based program needs. Students pursuing a degree in science in public health need to deeply comprehend multi-dimensional and interconnected systemic problems and communicate with diverse stakeholders across disciplines to produce relevant community-engaged research. The University of Miami Public Health Learning Collaboratory (LC) was established to transform the learning experience of public health master's students by providing opportunities to develop necessary core skills for effective public health practice early in their training, while applying these skills to address real-world public health needs in the community. The learning collaboratory structure pedagogical approach and programmatic details: Spanning an average of 3 semesters, the LC promotes student involvement in collaborative and impactful capstone and thesis projects. Practice-based teaching and service learning are central approaches to teaching cross-cutting competencies of leadership, communication, problem solving, collaboration, and systems thinking in public health. Significant to the approach is the engagement of previous cohorts of senior students to teach back to junior students, further integrating concepts learned. Long term alumni feedback recognized strengths of the program, including its structure, teamwork & collaboration, critical thinking & problem solving, guidance, nurture & support, teaching back, and content & curriculum. Community partners agreed the LC prepared students to practice in the field of public health. Discussion: The LC is a promising model for master's level public health education and community application, given the opportunities it provides to strengthen and integrate students' public health skills in a supportive environment, and enhance the transferability and sustainability of student and faculty's community public health work.

Abstract:This article discusses the contributions of the international studies in this special issue and presents a few emerging topics on school, family, and community partnerships. The studies in Part I confirm that, across countries, future teachers are inadequately prepared to conduct effective partnership programmes with all students’ families. Part II reports the results of interventions that provide future teachers with opportunities to practice the kinds of communications with parents that they will use as new teachers. In my and colleagues’ studies, several topics of family and community engagement have emerged that will extend and enrich college courses for future teachers and school leaders. These include a redefinition of the ‘professional’ teacher; understanding partnerships as a component of good school organisation; the importance of goal-linked family and community engagement for student success in school; the role of the community in partnership programmes; and the connections of preservice and inservice education for preparing and sustaining productive connections of home, school, and community.

Residents Are Coming: A Faculty Development Curriculum to Prepare a Community Site For New Learners

Abstract:Audience: This curriculum is designed for emergency medicine attendings in varying years of community practice to prepare them for Emergency Medicine (EM) residents. Length of curriculum: 15 months. Introduction: Emergency medicine is a growing field with new residencies approved every year. A strong, competent cadre of clinical educators is essential to the success of any residency, and new programs have the challenge of developing their clinical faculty into outstanding teachers. There is minimal literature guidance for navigating this transition. Our site is a community tertiary care center in the process of applying for an EM residency. We focus on our experience designing a faculty development curriculum to accommodate the needs of a diverse group of physicians in all stages of their careers. We will demonstrate that a curriculum satisfying all stakeholders can easily be implemented in a way that allows for robust participation without excessive additional administrative burden. Educational goals: Our goal is to prepare community-based EM attendings to be outstanding educators to future residents by augmenting their knowledge of current educational practice and adult learning theory, literature review, and biostatistics. Educational methods: The educational strategies used in this curriculum included lectures, guided discussion, small group discussion, and asynchronous learning. Research methods: This curriculum was implemented in the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical center targeted at staff physicians. This educational study was deemed exempt by the institutional review board (IRB). We electronically collected retrospective survey data using a 5-point Likert scale as well as free text responses. The primary measure was agreement with the statement, "Faculty development time makes me feel more prepared to be a clinical educator." We also surveyed whether this was felt to be an appropriate use of time, self-reported growth in key educational and biostatistical domains, and likeliness to change practice based on the material. Results: Responses collected from core faculty after the sessions indicated a uniformly positive review of the series itself with the primary outcome receiving a 4.6 rating on a 5-point Likert scale (strong agreement). Faculty reported that these brief sessions improved the quality of the departmental staff meetings (average rating 4.7/5). Journal club sessions were rated as positive (4.7/5) and attendees self-reported growth in statistical literacy and security in clinical practice. Discussion: We demonstrated successful implementation of a faculty development curriculum that was favorably assessed by all key stakeholders. Faculty self-reported growth in all educational and clinical domains evaluated. It was successfully implemented without substantially increasing the time burden for physicians with robust clinical and administrative schedules. We feel this is generalizable to other sites seeking to start an EM residency and is useful for sites with existing residencies to efficiently deliver content to junior faculty. Designing Prefaculty Competencies for Diverse Learners Through a Modified Delphi Process

Abstract:Importance: Faculty diversity in academic medicine may better prepare the next generation of equity-minded health care practitioners and leaders. Prefaculty development is an emerging concept to support trainees in achieving key knowledge, skills, and experiences to become successful faculty. Objective: To outline competencies, with corresponding milestones, to support the academic career development of learners, inclusive of racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender identities minoritized in medicine. Design, setting, and participants: Using a modified Delphi process, a national working group consisting of 13 members was established. The group used the published literature and listening sessions with diverse stakeholders to draft a set of competencies and milestones in July 2022. Diverse expert panelists reviewed the draft set over 2 rounds between September 2022 and January 2023. The group considered qualitative data to further refine the draft set between rounds. Consensus was reached when competencies and milestones were rated as agree or strongly agree on importance or appropriateness by 75% or greater of expert panelists after the second round. A final set of competencies and milestones was generated in February 2023. Data from round 1 were analyzed in October 2022 and data from round 2 were analyzed in January 2023. Main outcomes and measures: The development of prefaculty competencies with corresponding milestones by expert panel rankings and comments. Results: The national working group consisted of 13 members who represented diversity across racial, ethnic, and gender identities and academic and career tracks. The working group developed an initial set of 36 competencies and corresponding milestones across 12 domains. After 2 rounds, consensus among 46 expert panelists generated a final list of 32 competencies with corresponding milestones across 11 domains. A total of 26 panelists (56.5%) were women, 11 (23.9%) were Black or African American, 17 (37.0%) were Latina/o/x/e, Hispanic, or of Spanish origin, and 10 (21.7%) were White. Competency domains were divided into 2 groups: foundational (academic career choice and professional identity, mentorship, networking, financial skills, diversity and inclusion, personal effectiveness and self-efficacy, and leadership) and focused (education, community engagement, research, and clinical medicine). Consensus for inclusion or elimination of items was greater than 90% between the 2 rounds. Conclusions and relevance: There was consensus among the working group and expert panelists regarding the importance and appropriateness of the competencies and milestones for diverse trainees to successfully obtain faculty positions. Institutions and national organizations can use these competencies as a framework to develop curricula that support diverse learners' career development toward academia.
Learning to Teach: How a Simulated Learning Environment Can Connect Theory to Practice in General and Special Education Educator Preparation Programs

Abstract:Educator preparation programs have moved away from offering interest-based courses that prepare a teacher candidate on a more surface level and have opted to integrate more authentic experiences with technology that are infused into coursework. This research study focused on redesigning key courses in both the general and special education graduate-level educator preparation programs (EPPs) to infuse learning experiences through a simulated learning environment (Mursion) to help bridge teacher candidates’ coursework and field experiences, offering them robust experience with high leverage practices and technology that increases their own competency. Data from this study demonstrated that preservice teacher candidate work within the Mursion simulated learning environment increased use of high leverage practices related to strategic teaching, collaboration, differentiation, and providing feedback. Implications for instructional coaching, microteaching, repeated practice, and closing the research to practice gap are discussed.

Abstract:Background: The nursing faculty shortage in the United States affects enrollment of qualified nursing applicants. The gap may be filled by contracting with clinical nursing experts who often lack the content knowledge as academic nurse educators. Such content includes management of the classroom, evaluation, and legal issues. This article describes a course to provide new faculty with essential information for classroom teaching. Method: Nursing faculty were recruited from multiple education programs and enrolled in one of three sections of a course for new educators. Learners completed activities related to curriculum, evaluation, and academic roles. Results: Focus group evaluations were conducted. Themes emerged related to classroom teaching, learning experiences, improved understanding of nursing education, and knowledge for the scope of nursing faculty responsibilities. Conclusion: Each course provided experience in nursing education pedagogy and practice. Learners developed a wider array of teaching expertise and awareness of the faculty role in the classroom. Abstract:Recent years have brought rapid growth in schools of public health and an increasing demand for public health practitioners. These trends highlight the need for innovative approaches to prepare doctoral graduates for academic and high-level practice positions. The University of Maryland's School of Public Health developed a "Preparing Future Faculty and Professionals" program to enrich the graduate education and professional development of its doctoral students. We describe the program's key elements, including foundational seminars to enhance students' knowledge and skills related to teaching, research, and service; activities designed to foster career exploration and increase competitiveness in the job market; and independent, faculty-mentored teaching and research experiences. We present a model for replicating the program and share student outcomes of participation.
