Abstract:The vapor and liquid phase infrared spectra (375–4000 cm−1) and the liquid phase Raman spectra (with polarizations) of cyclohexane-1,1,4,4-d4 and cyclohexane-1,1,2,2,4,4,5,-d8 are presented for the first time. Vibrational assignments are made in view of the assignments for cyclohexane and cyclohexane-d12 and in conjunction with two normal coordinate calculations -the first using a force field derived from a perturbation computation involving cyclohexane and cyclohexane-d12 and the second using the transferable valence force field for saturated hydrocarbons of Snyder and Schachtschneider. Suggestions are put forward for 44 and 38 fundamentals in cyclohexane-1,1,4,4-d4 and cyclohexane-1,1,2,2,4,4,5,5-d8 respectively.

Abstract:The infrared spectra of 1,4-dioxan-d0 and 1,4-dioxan-d8 have been recorded in the vapour phase and as liquids in the region 4000-80 cm−1. Raman spectra of the liquids were obtained and polarization measurements have been carried out.Based upon the infrared vapour contours and the Raman polarization data, the vibrational spectra of both molecules have been assigned in terms of C2h symmetry and the results checked by the product rule. A normal coordinate calculation has been carried out, the thermodynamic functions and the root mean square amplitudes of vibration have been calculated.

Abstract:The electronic structures and stabilities of the nine possible isomers of C80CH2 based on C 80(D-5d) were studied using density function theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G level. Based on the optimized geometries, the electronic spectra, IR and C-13 NMR spectra of the isomers of C80CH2 were calculated using INDO/CIS, PM3 and B3LYP/6-31G methods, respectively. The most stable geometry of C80CH2 is predicted to be 27,28-C80CH2(A) with an annulene structure, where the additive bond is 6/6 bond near the equatorial belt of C-80(D-5d). Compared with those of C-80(D-5d), the first absorptions in the electronic spectra and main absorptions in the IR spectra of the stable C80CH2 isomers are red-shifted. The C-13 chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms in the cyclopropane structures in comparison with those in the annulene structures are changed upfield. The aromaticities are better maintained in the annulene structures than cyclopropane structures according to the NICS values of C80CH2 at B3LYP/6-31G level.

Abstract:Eighteen possible isomers Of C-78(CH2)(2) were investigated by the R 1)0 method. It was indicated that the most stable isomer was 42,43,62,63-C-78(CH2)(2), where the -CH2 groups were added to the 6/6 bonds located at the same hexagon passed by the longest axis of C-78 (C-2v), to form cyclopropane structures. Based on the most stable four geometries of C-78(CH2)(2) optimized at B3LYP/3-21G level, the first absorptions in the electronic spectra calculated with the INDO/CIS method and the IR frequencies of the C--C bonds on the carbon cage computed using the AM I method were blue-shifted compared with those of C-78 (C-2v) because of the bigger LUMO-HOMO energy gap and the less conjugated carbon cage after the addition. The chemical shifts of C-13 NMR for the carbon atoms on the added bonds calculated at B3LYP/3-21G level were moved upfield thanks to the conversion from sp(2)-C to SP3-C.

Abstract:The infrared and Raman spectra of vapor-phase and liquid-phase tetralin (TET) and 1,4-benzodioxan (14BZD) have been recorded and assigned. Calculations for the structures were carried out using the MP2/cc-pvtz (triple zeta) basis set, and the twisting angles were calculated to be 31.4° for TET and 30.1° for 14BZD. The barriers to planarity were calculated to be 4809 and 4093 cm−1, respectively. Density functional theory calculations for both planar (C2v) and twisted (C2) structures were carried out to predict the vibrational frequencies. After scaling, the agreement with the experimental values was excellent for C2 symmetry. Almost all frequencies below 1350 cm−1 were calculated to be within 10 cm−1 of the experimental values. Frequencies calculated for the C2v structures preclude the possibility of many vibrational interactions and hence agree more poorly.
Relative Stability and Spectroscopic Regularity of C80O Based on C80(D5d).

Abstract:The relative stabilities of the nine possible isomers for C80O based on C80(D5d) were investigated via density function theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. The most stable geometry of C80O is predicted to be 23,24-C80O, where an annulene-like structure is formed. The stretching vibration frequencies of the C=C bonds in the IR spectrum of C80O compared with those of the C=C bonds in the IR spectrum of C80(D5d) are basically blue-shifted. The signals of the bridged carbon atoms in the NMR spectrum of C80O, computed at B3LYP/6-31G level, are changed upfield compared with those of the correspoding carbon atoms in the NMR spectrum of C80(D5d). The anti-aromaticity of rings in C80O relative to that of the corresponding rings in C80(D5d) is decreased according to the NICS values at the dummy centers of these rings calculated at B3LYP/6-31G level. A hexagon in 21,22-C80O even shows a tendency of aromaticity.

Abstract:Carbon-hydrogen (C-H) vibration modes serve as key probes in the chemical identification of hydrocarbons and in vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy of hydrocarbons at the liquid/gas interface. Their assignments pose a challenge from a theoretical viewpoint. In this work, we present a detailed study of the C-H stretching region of dimethyl sulfoxide using a new ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) module that we have implemented in NWChem. Through a combination of AIMD simulations and static normal mode analysis, we interpret experimental infrared and Raman spectra and explore the role of anharmonic effects in this system. Comprehensive anharmonic normal mode analysis of the C-H stretching region casts doubt upon previous experimental assignments of the shoulder on the symmetric C-H stretching peak. In addition, our AIMD simulations also show significant broadening of the in-phase symmetric C-H stretching resonance, which suggests that the experimentally observed shoulder is due to thermal broadening of the symmetric stretching resonance.

Abstract:In IR and Raman spectral studies, the congestion of the vibrational modes in the C-H stretching region between 2800 and 3000 cm(-1) has complicated spectral assignment, conformational analysis, and structural and dynamics studies, even with quite a few of the simplest molecules. To resolve these issues, polarized spectra measurement on a well aligned sample is generally required. Because the liquid interface is generally ordered and molecularly thin, and sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS) is an intrinsically coherent polarization spectroscopy, SFG-VS can be used for discerning details in vibrational spectra of the interfacial molecules. Here we show that, from systematic molecular symmetry and SFG-VS polarization analysis, a set of polarization selection rules could be developed for explicit assignment of the SFG vibrational spectra of the C-H stretching modes. These polarization selection rules helped assignment of the SFG-VS spectra of vapor/alcohol (n = 1-8) interfaces with unprecedented details. Previous approach on assignment of these spectra relied on IR and Raman spectral assignment, and they were not able to give such detailed assignment of the SFG vibrational spectra. Sometimes inappropriate assignment was made, and consequently misleading conclusions on interfacial structure, conformation and even dynamics were reached. With these polarization rules in addition to knowledge from IR and Raman studies, new structural information and understanding of the molecular interactions at these interfaces were obtained, and some new spectral features for the C-H stretching modes were also identified. Generally speaking, these new features can be applied to IR and Raman spectroscopic studies in the condensed phase. Therefore, the advancement on vibrational spectra assignment may find broad applications in the related fields using IR and Raman as vibrational spectroscopic tools.
Simulating Vibrationally-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectra of Flexible Molecules: Linear Alkanes C$_{n}$H$_{2n+2}$ ($n$=1-8)

Abstract:We integrated full core-hole density functional theory with Franck-Condon calculations, considering Duschinsky rotation, to simulate vibrationally-resolved C1s X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of eight linear alkanes, from methane to octane (C$_{n}$H$_{2n+2}$, $n$=1--8). Results align excellently with experimental absolute binding energies and profiles. The spectrum of ethane serves as a ``spectral seed'', with each longer alkane's atom-specific spectrum displaying similar characteristics, albeit with shifts and slight intensity adjustments. Detailed assignments clarify the distinct spectra in short alkanes ($n$=1--4) and their stabilization in long alkanes ($n$=5--8). Carbons are classified as central or distal (C$_1$ and C$_2$), with central carbons contributing nearly identically to the lowest-energy feature A, while distal carbons contribute to the second lowest-energy feature B (both are 0-0 transitions). Increasing molecule size adds more central carbons, enhancing feature A and weakening feature B. Our analysis identifies two dominant Franck-Condon-active vibrations: C$^*$--H stretching ($\sim$3400-3500 cm$^{-1}$) and bending ($\sim$1400-1500 cm$^{-1}$) modes. Structural analysis shows that core ionization minimally affects alkane geometry, less than in ring compounds from previous studies. This work extends our protocol from rigid ring compounds to flexible molecules, contributing to building a high-resolution theoretical XPS library and enhancing the understanding of vibronic coupling.

New C−H Stretching Vibrational Spectral Features in the Raman Spectra of Gaseous and Liquid Ethanol

Abstract:Traditionally, the Raman spectrum of ethanol in the C-H vibrational stretching region between 2800 cm(-1) and 3100 cm(-1) had been assigned as three bands of the -CH2 symmetric stretching, the -CH3 symmetric stretching, and the -CH3 antisymmetric stretching. In this report, new Raman spectral features were observed for ethanol and two deuterated ethanols, that is, CD3CH2OH and CH3CD2OH, in both gaseous and liquid phases with polarized photoacoustic Raman spectroscopy (PARS) as well as normal Raman spectroscopy. With the aid of depolarization ratio measurements and quantum chemical calculations, different assignments were presented to the complex spectral features in the ethanol Raman spectra. In the gaseous ethanol spectra, the band at similar to 2882 cm(-1) was assigned to the overlapping symmetric stretching vibrational modes of both -CH2 and -CH3; the band at similar to 2938 cm(-1) was assigned to the two symmetric -CH3 Fermi resonance modes and the weak -CH2 antisymmetric stretching mode; and the band at similar to 2983 cm(-1) was assigned to the symmetric -CH2 Fermi resonance mode and the weak -CH3 antisymmetric stretching mode. The liquid ethanol spectral features are similar to the gaseous spectra with a much stronger -CH3 antisymmetric stretching mode and a red shift of about 10 cm(-1), which can be attributed to the effects of solvent interactions. The new assignments of both the gaseous and liquid ethanol spectra not only confirmed the recent results from the sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy studies of the ethanol molecules at the air/liquid interface but the differences in the gaseous and liquid phases, as well as at the interfaces, can also provide detailed experimental evidence in understanding of the molecular interactions and dynamics of the ethanol molecule in different chemical environments.

Abstract:Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and quantum chemistry calculations that are based on the density functional theory (DFT) have been used to study the structure, molecular interactions of the nematic and twist-bend phases for thioether-linked dimers. Infrared absorbance measurements were conducted in a polarized beam for a homogeneously aligned sample in order to obtain more details about the orientation of the vibrational transition dipole moments. The distributions to investigate the structure and conformation of the molecule dihedral angle were calculated. The calculated spectrum was compared with the experimental infrared spectra and as a result, detailed vibrational assignments are reported.
The Vibrational-Spectrum, Barrier to Internal-Rotation, and Abinitio Calculations of 2-Chloropropane

Abstract:The Raman spectra (3200–50 cm−1) of gaseous, liquid, and solid 2-chloropropane-d3 (isopropyl-d3 chloride), CH3(CD3)CHCl, and the infrared spectra (3200–50 cm−1) of the gas and solid have been recorded. The torsional transitions observed in the far infrared spectrum of the gaseous sample recorded at a resolution of 0.10 cm−1 between 265 and 135 cm−1 were analyzed in terms of the semirigid rotor model. An effective barrier of 1378 ± 4 cm−1 (3.94 ± 0.01 kcal/mol), cosine–cosine coupling term of 166 ± 10 cm−1 (0.47 ± 0.03 kcal/mol), and sine–sine coupling term of −173 ± 1 cm−1 (−0.49 ± 0.01 kcal/mol) were determined by fitting ten observed frequencies arising from the CH3 and CD3 torsions. The assignment of the 27 fundamentals is given and discussed. A complete equilibrium geometry, barrier to internal rotation, and vibrational frequencies have been determined by ab initio Hartree–Fock gradient calculations employing either 3-21G* or 6-31G* basis sets for both the d0 and d3 species. These calculated results are compared to the experimental values as well as to the corresponding quantities for some similar molecules. Structure and Vibrations of Small Carbon Clusters from Coupled-Cluster Calculations

Abstract:The vibrational spectrum of the linear carbon clusters C2−C9 and of cyclic C4, C6, C8, and C10 has been investigated using the augmented coupled-cluster, CCSD(T), method and correlation-consistent basis sets. Particular emphasis is placed on assignment of bands in matrix infrared spectra of trapped graphite vapor. The relative energetics of linear and cyclic isomers of C6, C8, and C10 were investigated at the CCSD(T) level using basis sets of [4s3p2d1f] quality. Our best calculations predict that the ground state structure of C6 is a cumulenic D3h ring and that of C8 a polyacetylenic C4h ring. Linear states are close in energy (13 ± 2 and 8 ± 2 kcal/mol, respectively), and both forms should be observable. The ground state structure of cyclic C10 clearly has D5h rather than D10h symmetry, at least for the re geometry. A linear regression of computed CCSD(T)/[3s2p1d] harmonic frequencies vs observed fundamentals for the previously assigned stretching frequencies of linear Cn clusters has a very high correla...

Abstract:A combined experimental and theoretical studies of resonant ionization spectra for van der Waals complexes C6H5CH3...Ar and C6D5C3...Ar are reported. By using resonant ionization spectrometry, together with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, in supersonic molecular beam, the internal rotation for CH, and intermolecular vibration for atom Ar in the complexes are exhibited, all observed bands are rationally assigned by isotope effect and calculated at the internal rotational levels and external vibrational levels , and three modes frequencies of van der waals vibrations for complex C6H5CH3...Ar are obtained.

Abstract:The effect of librations of molecules about axes perpendicular to those of the transition moments of molecular vibrations upon the dichroic ratios associated with such vibrations in the infrared spectra of molecular crystals is considered. It is demonstrated that if such librations are harmonic and of small amplitude, the root-mean-square deviation of the molecular orientation from its equilibrium orientation is sufficient to account for the deviation of observed dichroic ratios from those predicted by the ``oriented gas model.'' Deviations of this type previously reported from the polarized infrared spectra of iodoform, brucite, para-dichloro-benzene and benzene are reviewed. From a knowledge of the libration frequencies determined by examination of infrared or Raman spectra of molecular crystals, and of the observed dichroic ratios of polarized infrared spectra, the orientations of molecules and/or functional groups of molecules in crystals may be quantitatively determined. It is also demonstrated that as a consequence of the model used for correction of observed dichroic ratios, a branch-type libration-vibration spectrum of such crystals is predicted. The fine structure of this spectrum is discussed and is shown to be similar, in many ways, to the rotation-vibration spectra of polyatomic gases. The relationship of this work to the interpretation of electron density maps of molecular crystals is discussed.

Abstract:The infra-red crystal spectra of phenazine and phenazine-d8 have been measured between 4000 and 400 cm−1. Spectra in polarized light have been obtained for two types of polycrystalline highly oriented films, one showing the (201) crystal plane in the film plane, the other having a random axial orientation around the b crystal axis.A zero order force constant calculation was made for the infrared active planar blocks B2u and B3u using a modified Urey-Bradley field, transferred from anthracene and pyrazine. The vibrational assignment of the infrared active fundamentals is discussed on the basis of the dichroic behaviour of the observed bands and of the prediction of the force field. The crystal field splitting of several bands has been studied in further details.

Abstract:An investigation of the rotational spectrum of the interstellar molecule thioformaldehyde between 110 and 377 GHz through a pyrolysis reaction revealed a multitude of absorption lines assignable to H$_2$CS and H$_2$C$^{34}$S in their lowest four excited vibrational states besides lines of numerous thioformaldehyde isotopologues in their ground vibrational states reported earlier as well as lines pertaining to several by-products. Additional transitions of H$_2$CS in its lowest four excited vibrational states were recorded in selected regions between 571 and 1386 GHz. Slight to strong Coriolis interactions occur between all four vibrational states with the exception of the two highest lying states because both are totally symmetric vibrations. We present combined analyses of the ground and the four interacting states for our rotational data of H$_2$CS and H$_2$C$^{34}$S. The H$_2$CS data were supplemented with two sets of high-resultion IR data in two separate analyses. The $v_2 = 1$ state has been included in analyses of Coriolis interactions of low-lying fundamental states of H$_2$CS for the first time and this improved the quality of the fits substantially. We extended furthermore assignments in $J$ of transition frequencies of thioketene in its ground vibrational state.

Abstract:Dinitriles with a saturated hydrocarbon skeleton and a -C≡N group at each end can have large electric dipole moments. Their formation can be related to highly reactive radicals such as CH2CN, C2N, or CN. Thus, these saturated dinitriles are potential candidates to be observed in the interstellar medium. In this work, two members of this family, hexanedinitrile and heptanedinitrile, have been investigated through their rotational spectra. The jet-cooled broadband chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectra of both molecules were measured in the 2-8 GHz frequency region. Three and six conformers of hexanedinitrile and heptanedinitrile, respectively, were detected and assigned based on the rotational and quadrupole coupling constants.

Abstract:The vibration spectroscopy (Raman and infrared) of widely concerned molecules in sulfur corrosion phenomenon (Dibenzyl Disulfide, Dibenzyl Sulphide, and Bibenzyl) is detailedly analyzed based on density functional theory and experimental measurement. The dominant conformations of these molecules are determined according to Boltzmann distribution in relative Gibbs free energy. Additionally, noncovalent interaction analysis is conducted to indicate intramolecular interaction. Vibration normal mode is assigned based on potential energy distribution, which comprehensively reveals the molecular vibrational behaviors. Conformations weighted spectra are obtained and compared with experimentally measured spectra. We found that experimental spectra are in good agreement with the theoretical spectra in B3LYP-D3(BJ)/6-311G** level with a frequency correction factor. Furthermore, the divergence among these molecules is discussed. The vibrational behavior of the methylene group in the molecule shows a trend with the presence of the sulfur atom.

Here, we compute the finite-temperature broadband infrared spectra of CH5+ and all its isotopologues, i.e. CHnD5-n+ up to CD5+, from path integral molecular dynamics in conjunction with interactions and dipoles computed consistently at CCSD(T) coupled cluster accuracy. The potential energy and dipole moment surfaces have been accurately represented in full dimensionality in terms of high-dimensional neural networks. The resulting computational efficiency allows us to establish CCSD(T) accuracy at the level of converged path integral simulations. For all six isotopologues, the computed broadband spectra compare very favorably to the available experimental broadband spectra obtained from laser induced reactions action vibrational spectroscopy. The current approach is found to consistently and significantly improve on previous calculations of these broadband vibrational spectra and defines the new cutting-edge for what has been dubbed the "enfant terrible" of molecular spectroscopy in view of its pronounced large-amplitude motion that involves all intramolecular degrees of freedom.
