Abstract:Socioeconomic status (SES) is one of the prime factors influencing the health status of a nation. It is the measure of the social standing of the individual or a family and has a wide impact on an individual/family's health, educational attainment, diet, lifestyle, etc., The per capita income of citizens is a major factor that decides the SES of the population. The affordability and utilization of the health facilities depend on the socioeconomic profile of the population. The periodic changes in the consumer price of goods globally as well as nationally due to inflation warrants that it is mandatory to constantly update the income-based socioeconomic scales so as the assessment is made correctly in practice. We are making an attempt to provide an updated Kuppuswamy and Udai Pareekh's socioeconomic scales for 2019.
Use of indices to measure socio-economic status (SES) in South-Asian urban health studies: a scoping review

Abstract:BackgroundUniversal health coverage (UHC) is a key area in post-2015 global agenda which has been incorporated as target for achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A global framework has been developed to monitor SDG indicators disaggregated by socioeconomic and demographic markers. This review identifies the indices used to measure socio-economic status (SES) in South Asian urban health studies.MethodsTwo reviewers searched six databases including Cochran Library, Medline, LILACS, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Lancet journals independently. All South Asian health studies covering urban population, with any research-designs, written in English language, and published between January 2000 and June 2016 were included. Two reviewers independently screened and assessed for selection of eligible articles for inclusion. Any conflict between the reviewers was resolved by a third reviewer.ResultsWe retrieved 3529 studies through initial search. Through screening and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, this review finally included 256 articles for full-text review. A total of 25 different SES indices were identified. SES indices were further categorized into 5 major groups, e.g., (1) asset-based wealth index, (2) wealth index combining education, (3) indices based on income and expenditure, (4) indices based on education and occupation, and (5) “indices without description.” The largest proportion of studies, irrespective of country of origin, thematic area, and study design, used asset-based wealth index (n = 142, 54%) as inequality markers followed by the index based on income and expenditure (n = 80, 30%). Sri Lankan studies used income- and expenditure-based indices more than asset-based wealth index. Majority of the reviewed studies were on “maternal, neonatal, and child health” (n = 98, 38%) or on “non-communicable diseases” (n = 84, 33%). Reviewed studies were mostly from India (n = 145, 57%), Bangladesh (n = 42, 16%), and Pakistan (n = 27, 11%). Among the reviewed articles, 55% (n = 140) used primary data while the rest 45% studies used secondary data.ConclusionThis scoping review identifies asset-based wealth index as the most frequently used indices for measuring socioeconomic status in South Asian urban health studies. This review also provides a clear idea about the use of other indices for the measurement SES in the region.

Socioeconomic inequality in child health outcomes in India: analyzing trends between 1993 and 2021

Abstract:Background: The health of India's children has improved over the past thirty years. Rates of morbidity and anthropometric failure have decreased. What remains unknown, however, is how those patterns have changed when examined by socioeconomic status. We examine changes in 11 indicators of child health by household wealth and maternal education between 1993 and 2021 to fill this critical gap in knowledge. Doing so could lead to policies that better target the most vulnerable children. Methods: We used data from five rounds of India's National Family Health Survey conducted in 1993, 1999, 2006, 2016, and 2021 for this repeated cross-sectional analysis. We studied mother-reported cases of acute respiratory illness and diarrhea, hemoglobin measurements for anemia, and height and weight measurements for anthropometric failure. We examined how the prevalence rates of each outcome changed between 1993 and 2021 by household wealth and maternal education. We repeated this analysis for urban and rural communities. RESULTS: The socioeconomic gradient in 11 indicators of child health flattened between 1993 and 2021. This was in large part due to large reductions in the prevalence among children in the lowest socioeconomic groups. For most outcomes, the largest reductions occurred before 2016. Yet as of 2021, except for mild anemia, outcome prevalence remained the highest among children in the lowest socioeconomic groups. Furthermore, we show that increases in the prevalence of stunting and wasting between 2016 and 2021 are largely driven by increases in the severe forms of these outcomes among children in the highest socioeconomic groups. This finding underscores the importance of examining child health outcomes by severity. Conclusions: Despite substantial reductions in the socioeconomic gradient in 11 indicators of child health between 1993 and 2021, outcome prevalence remained the highest among children in the lowest socioeconomic groups in most cases. Thus, our findings emphasize the need for a continued focus on India's most vulnerable children.
Patterns of change in the association between socioeconomic status and body mass index distribution in India, 1999-2021

Abstract:Background: Body mass index (BMI) is an important indicator of human health. However, trends in socioeconomic inequalities in BMI over time throughout India are understudied. Filling this gap will elucidate which socioeconomic groups are still at risk for adverse BMI values. Methods: This repeated cross-sectional study analysed four rounds of India's National Family Health Surveys (1998-1999, 2005-2006, 2015-2016, and 2019-2021). The outcome was BMI categories, measured in kilogram per metres squared (kg/m2), defined as severely/moderately thin (<17.0 kg/m2), mildly thin (17.0-18.4 kg/m2), normal (18.5-24.9 kg/m2), overweight (25.0-29.9 kg/m2), and obese (≥30.0 kg/m2). We examined the prevalence, standardised absolute change, and odds ratios estimated by multivariable regression models by household wealth and levels of education, two important measures of socioeconomic status (SES). Results: The study population consisted of 1 244 149 women and 227 585 men. We found that those in the lowest SES categories were more likely to be severely/moderately thin or mildly thin. Conversely, those in the highest SES groups were more likely to be overweight or obese. The gradients were steepest for wealth, and this was substantiated by the results of regression models for every wave. There has been a decline in the difference in the prevalence of severely/moderately thin or mildly thin between SES groups when comparing the years 1999 and 2021. Conclusions: SES-based inequalities in BMI were smaller in 2021 compared to 1999. However, those in low SES groups were most likely to be severely/moderately thin or mildly thin while those in high SES groups were more likely to be overweight or obese. Future research should explore the pathways that link SES with BMI.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The conceptualization and measurement of socio-economic status (SES) is difficult in developing settings. In the absence of SES indices for women in rural China, we constructed SES indices for prenatal care research, and examined their relation to perinatal care and outcomes.METHODS:This study utilized data of 4364 rural women having recently given birth, collected by a cross-sectional survey in three rural Chinese provinces in 2007. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to construct the SES indices and multilevel logistic regression was use to relate the indices to low birthweight, short exclusive breastfeeding (≤4 months), childbirth at the county or higher level health facility, caesarean section, inadequate prenatal care and no postnatal care.RESULTS:Three separate SES indices (wealth, occupational and educational indices) were obtained from the PCA analysis, capturing maternal, paternal and household SES characteristics. After adjusting for individual level factors, village and township wealth, higher levels of the indices were inversely associated with inadequate prenatal care. Higher occupational status was positively associated with short exclusive breastfeeding and childbirth at the county or higher level health facility, but inversely associated with no postnatal care. Higher educational status was positively associated with no postnatal care.CONCLUSION:Three SES indices (wealth, occupational and educational) were obtained from this study for prenatal care research. The indices gave mostly varying results on their associations with perinatal care and outcomes, indicating that SES measures may be outcome-specific.
Socio-economic inequalities in spending on various levels of education across Indian households: an update

Abstract:The study examines potential channels of socio-economic inequalities in education expenditure by Indian households at three different levels of education using National Sample Survey Data (2018). Based on Heckman’s two-step model estimates, the inequalities are evident in the participation choice and education expenditure by social groups, place of residence and religious minorities for education up to the secondary level. Nevertheless, the economic status of the household is less critical. Gender inequality is more evident in the expenditure incurred than the enrollment choice at the secondary level. For education at higher secondary and above levels, the crucial channel of social inequality lies in choosing a subject specialization and subsequent expenditures. As per multinomial logit estimates, the choice of streams is highly selective, favoring those with the capacity and willingness to pay. The selection corrected expenditure based on Lee correction reveals the extent of socio-economic inequalities in education expenditures at these levels of education. The apparent disparity in participation choice and expenditure can only be addressed through calibrated policy interventions, especially at higher levels of education. Failing to resolve this may exacerbate inequalities in education and labor market participation.
Changes in Child Nutrition in India: A Decomposition Approach

Abstract:Background: Improvements in child health are a key indicator of progress towards the third goal of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Poor nutritional outcomes of Indian children are occurring in the context of high economic growth rates. The aim of this paper is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the demographic and socio-economic factors contributing to changes in the nutritional status of children aged 0-5 years in India using data from the 2004-2005 and 2011-2012 Indian Human Development Survey. Methods: To identify how much the different socio-economic conditions of households contribute to the changes observed in stunting, underweight and the Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF), we employ both linear and non-linear decompositions, as well as the unconditional quantile technique. Results: We find the incidence of stunting and underweight dropping by 7 and 6 percentage points, respectively. Much of this remarkable improvement is encountered in the Central and Western regions. A household's economic situation, as well as maternal body mass index and education, account for much of the change in child nutrition. The same holds for CIAF in the non-linear decomposition. Although higher maternal autonomy is associated with a decrease in stunting and underweight, the contribution of maternal autonomy to improvements is relatively small. Conclusions: Household wealth consistently makes the largest contribution to improvements in undernutrition. Nevertheless, maternal autonomy and education also play a relatively important role.

Abstract:Social mobility captures the extent to which socio-economic status of children, is independent of status of their respective parents. In order to measure social mobility, most widely used indicators of socio-economic status are income, education and occupation. While social mobility measurement based on income is less contested, data availability in Indian context limits us to observing mobility patterns along the dimensions of either education or occupation. In this study we observe social mobility patterns for different social groups along these two main dimensions, and find that while upward and downward mobility prospects in education for SCs/STs is somewhat improving in the recent times, occupational mobility patterns are rather worrisome. These results motivate the need for reconciling disparate trends along education and occupation, in order to get a more comprehensive picture of social mobility in the country.
Uneven burden of multidimensional poverty in India: A caste based analysis

Abstract:Poverty is multifaceted. The global poverty profile shows 41% of multidimensionally poor people living in South Asian countries. Though castes and tribes are a more prevalent line of social stratification in India, and their socio-economic characteristics also vary remarkably, hardly any study has explored these dimensions while analysing multidimensional poverty in India. Hence, this study attempts to assess the multidimensional status of poverty among the social groups in India. National Family Health Survey, 2015–16 (NFHS-4) is a source of rich information on 579,698 households’ well-being for this analysis. Alkire- Foster technique was applied to decompose the Multidimensional Poverty Index (M0) across its dimensions and indicators for all the social groups. Three broad dimensions of deprivation–Health, Education and Standard of Living–include 12 indicators, guided by the poverty literature, data availability and the country’s sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There were three main findings in this study: (1) Scheduled Tribes (STs) are the most disadvantaged subgroup in India with remarkably high values of headcount (H = 0.444;), intensity (A = 0.486), and M0 (0.216), followed by Scheduled Castes (SCs) (H = 0.292; A = 0.473; M0 = 0.138), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) (H = 0.245; A = 0.465; M0 = 0.114); and Others category is the most privileged with very low values of H = 0.149, A = 0.463, and M0 = 0.069; (2) STs contribute nearly twice their population share for both H and M0, and the SCs contribution is also noticeably higher than their population share; (3) States located in the central and eastern regions of India have the higher H, A and M0 for all the social groups. This suggests that there is a need for a thorough assessment of poverty at specific levels to uncover the poverty situation in society, improve the effectiveness of evidence-based planning and effective policymaking.

Abstract:Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death in most low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). CVDs and their metabolic risk factors have historically been concentrated among urban residents with higher socioeconomic status (SES) in LMICs such as India. However, as India develops, it is unclear whether these socioeconomic and geographic gradients will persist or change. Understanding these social dynamics in CVD risk is essential for mitigating the rising burden of CVDs and to reach those with the greatest needs. Methods Using nationally representative data with biomarker measurements from the fourth (2015-16) and fifth (2019-21) Indian National Family and Health Surveys, we investigated trends in the prevalence of four CVD risk factors: tobacco consumption (self-reported, any type), unhealthy weight (BMI [≥] 25kg/m2 ), diabetes (random plasma glucose concentration [≥]200mg/dL or self-reported diabetes), and hypertension (one of: average systolic blood pressure [≥] 140mmHg, average diastolic blood pressure [≥] 90mmHg, self-reported past diagnosis, or self-reported current antihypertensive medication use) among adults aged 15-49 years. We first described changes at the national level and then trends stratified by place of residence (urban versus rural), geographic region (northern, northeastern, central, eastern, western, southern), regional level of development (Empowered Action Group member state or not), and two measures of socioeconomic status: level of education (no education, primary incomplete, primary complete, secondary incomplete, secondary complete, higher) and wealth (quintiles). Findings Unhealthy weight increased among all social and geographic groups but both the absolute and the relative changes were substantially higher among people with low SES (as measured by education or wealth) and in rural areas. For diabetes and hypertension, the prevalence increased for those from disadvantaged groups while staying constant or even decreasing among the wealthier and more educated. In contrast, tobacco consumption declined for all social and geographic groups. Interpretation In 2015-16, CVD risk factors were higher among more advantaged subpopulations in India. However, between 2015-16 and 2019-21, the prevalence of these risk factors grew more rapidly for less wealthy and less educated subpopulations and those living in rural areas. These trends have resulted in CVD risk becoming far more widespread throughout the population; CVD can no longer be characterized as a wealthy urban phenomenon.

Abstract:Despite the well-known importance of high-quality care before and after delivery, not every mother and newborn in India receive appropriate antenatal and postnatal care (ANC/PNC). Using India's National Family Health Surveys (2015–2016 and 2019–2021), we quantified the socioeconomic and geographic inequalities in the utilization of ANC/PNC among women aged 15–49 years and their newborns (N = 161,225 in 2016; N = 150,611 in 2021). For each of the eighteen ANC/PNC components, we assessed absolute and relative inequalities by household wealth (poorest vs. richest), maternal education (no education vs. higher than secondary), and type of place of residence (rural vs. urban) and evaluated state-level heterogeneity. In 2021, the national prevalence of ANC/PNC components ranged from 19.8% for 8 + ANC visits to 91.6% for maternal weight measurement. Absolute inequalities were greatest for ultrasound test (33.3%-points by wealth, 30.3%-points by education) and 8 + ANC visits (13.2%-points by residence). Relative inequalities were greatest for 8 + ANC visits (1.8 ~ 4.4 times). All inequalities declined over time. State-specific estimates were overall consistent with national results. Socioeconomic and geographic inequalities in ANC/PNC varied significantly across components and by states. To optimize maternal and newborn health in India, future interventions should aim to achieve universal coverage of all ANC/PNC components.

Subjective socioeconomic status: an alternative to objective socioeconomic status

Abstract:Background: Subjective "ladder" measurements of socio-economic status (SES) are easy-to-administer tools that ask respondents to rate their own SES, allowing them to evaluate their own material resources and determine where it places them relative to their community. Here, we sought to compare the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social status to the WAMI, an objective measure of SES that includes data on water and sanitation, asset ownership, education, and income. Methods: Leveraging a study of 595 tuberculosis patients in Lima, Peru, we compared the MacArthur ladder score to the WAMI score using weighted Kappa scores and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. We identified outliers that fell outside the 95th percentile and assessed the durability of the inconsistencies between scores by re-testing a subset of participants. We then used Akaike information criterion (AIC) to compare the predictability of logistic regression models evaluating the association between the two SES scoring systems and history of asthma. Results: The correlation coefficient between the MacArthur ladder and WAMI scores was 0.37 and the weighted Kappa was 0.26. The correlation coefficients differed by less than 0.04 and the Kappa ranged from 0.26 to 0.34, indicating fair agreement. When we replaced the initial MacArthur ladder scores with retest scores, the number of individuals with disagreements between the two scores decreased from 21 to 10 and the correlation coefficient and weighted Kappa both increased by at least 0.03. Lastly, we found that when we categorized WAMI and MacArthur ladder scores into three groups, both had a linear trend association with history of asthma with effect sizes and AICs that differed by less than 15% and 2 points, respectively. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated fair agreement between the MacArthur ladder and WAMI scores. The agreement between the two SES measurements increased when they were further categorized into 3-5 categories, the form in which SES is often used in epidemiologic studies. The MacArthur score also performed similarly to WAMI in predicting a socio-economically sensitive health outcome. Researchers should consider subjective SES tools as an alternative method for measuring SES, particularly in large health studies where data collection is a burden.

Abstract:Using the national representative Indian household surveys collected by the National Sample Survey Organization, we examine the welfare gaps across social groups for the entire distribution in 1983, 1993–94, 2004–05 and 2011–12. We use spatially adjusted per capita consumption expenditure as the measure of welfare and show that there exists significant welfare gap between Scheduled Tribes/Scheduled Castes (ST/SC) and General Category (GC) households at higher quantiles of the distribution, but the magnitude of the gap has declined over the years for the SC households. Using unconditional quantile regression decomposition, we find that the coefficient effect (unexplained effect) dominates the endowment effect (explained effect) in explaining the gap in all four years. Further decomposition shows that the difference in educational distribution between the SC/ST and GC households drives most of the explained differences between the social groups.

Economic geography and the scaling of urban and regional income in India

Abstract:We undertake an exploration of the economic income (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) of Indian districts and cities based on scaling analyses of the dependence of these quantities on associated population size. Scaling analysis provides a straightforward method for the identification of network effects in socioeconomic organization, which are the tell-tale of cities and urbanization. For districts, a sub-state regional administrative division in India, we find almost linear scaling of GDP with population, a result quite different from urban functional units in other national contexts. Using deviations from scaling, we explore the behavior of these regional units to find strong distinct geographic patterns of economic behavior. We characterize these patterns in detail and connect them to the literature on regional economic development for a diverse subcontinental nation such as India. Given the paucity of economic data for Urban Agglomerations in India, we use a set of assumptions to create a new dataset of GDP based on districts, for large cities. This reveals superlinear scaling of income with city size, as expected from theory, while displaying similar underlying patterns of economic geography observed for district economic performance. This analysis of the economic performance of Indian cities is severely limited by the absence of higher-fidelity, direct city level economic data. We discuss the need for standardized and consistent estimates of the size and change in urban economies in India, and point to a number of proxies that can be explored to develop such indicators.

Intergenerational Mobility in India: New Measures and Estimates across Time and Social Groups

Abstract:We study intergenerational mobility in India. We propose a new measure of upward mobility: the expected education rank of a child born to parents in the bottom half of the education distribution. This measure works well under data constraints common in developing countries and historical contexts. Intergenerational mobility in India has been constant and low since before liberalization. Among sons, we observe rising mobility for Scheduled Castes and declining mobility among Muslims. Daughters’ intergenerational mobility is lower than sons’, with less cross-group variation over time. A natural experiment suggests that affirmative action for Scheduled Castes has substantially improved their mobility. (JEL I24, J13, J15, J16, J62, O12, Z12)

Methods: Using nationally representative data with biomarker measurements from the fourth (2015-16) and fifth (2019-21) Indian National Family and Health Surveys, we investigated trends in the prevalence of four CVD risk factors: smoking (self-reported), unhealthy weight (BMI ≥25 kgm2), diabetes (random plasma glucose concentration ≥200 mg/dL or self-reported diabetes), and hypertension (one of: average systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg, average diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg, self-reported past diagnosis, or self-reported current antihypertensive medication use) among adults aged 15-49 years. We first described changes at the national level and then trends stratified by place of residence (urban versus rural), geographic region (northern, northeastern, central, eastern, western, southern), regional level of development (Empowered Action Group member state or not), and two measures of socioeconomic status: level of education (no education, primary incomplete, primary complete, secondary incomplete, secondary complete, higher) and wealth (quintiles). Findings: Unhealthy weight increased among all social and geographic groups but both the absolute and the relative changes were substantially higher among people with low SES (as measured by education or wealth) and in rural areas. For diabetes and hypertension, the prevalence increased for those from disadvantaged groups while staying constant or even decreasing among the wealthier and more educated. In contrast, smoking consumption declined for all social and geographic groups. Interpretation: In 2015-16, CVD risk factors were higher among more advantaged subpopulations in India. However, between 2015-16 and 2019-21, the prevalence of these risk factors grew more rapidly for less wealthy and less educated subpopulations and those living in rural areas. These trends have resulted in CVD risk becoming far more widespread throughout the population; CVD can no longer be characterized as a wealthy urban phenomenon. Abstract:Background: Globally, India contributes the largest share in sheer numbers to the burden of maternal and infant under-nutrition, morbidity and mortality. A major gap in our knowledge is how socio-cultural practices and beliefs influence the perinatal period and thus perinatal outcomes, particularly in the rapidly growing urban setting. Methods and findings: Using data from a qualitative study in urban south India, including in-depth interviews with 36 women who had recently been through childbirth as well as observations of family life and clinic encounters, we explored the territory of familial, cultural and traditional practices and beliefs influencing women and their families through pregnancy, childbirth and infancy. We found that while there were some similarities in cultural practices to those described before in studies from low resource village settings, there are changing practices and ideas. Fertility concerns dominate women's experience of married life; notions of gender preference and ideal family size are changing rapidly in response to the urban context; however inter-generational family pressures are still considerable. While a rich repertoire of cultural practices persists throughout the perinatal continuum, their existence is normalised and even underplayed. In terms of diet and nutrition, traditional messages including notions of 'hot' and 'cold' foods, are stronger than health messages; however breastfeeding is the cultural norm and the practice of delayed breastfeeding appears to be disappearing in this urban setting. Marriage, pregnancy and childbirth are so much part of the norm for women, that there is little expectation of individual choice in any of these major life events. Conclusions: A greater understanding is needed of the dynamic factors shaping the perinatal period in urban India, including an acknowledgment of the health promoting as well as potentially harmful cultural practices and the critical role of the family. This will help plan culturally appropriate integrated perinatal health care.
Systematic comparison of household income, consumption, and assets to measure health inequalities in low- and middle-income countries

Abstract:There has been no systematic comparison of how the three most common measures to quantify household SES—income, consumption, and asset indices—could impact the magnitude of health inequalities. Microdata from 22 Living Standards Measurement Study surveys were compiled and concentration indices, relative indices of inequality, and slope indices of inequality were calculated for underweight, stunting, and child deaths using income, consumption, asset indices, and hybrid predicted income. Meta-analyses of survey year subgroups (pre-1995, 1995–2004, and post-2004), outcomes (child deaths, stunting, and underweight), and World Bank country-income status (low, low-middle, and upper-middle) were then conducted. Asset indices and the related hybrid income proxy result in the largest magnitudes of health inequalities for all 12 overall outcomes, as well as most country-income and survey year subgroupings. There is no clear trend of health inequality magnitudes changing over time, but magnitudes of health inequality may increase as country-income levels increase. There is no significant difference between relative and absolute inequality measures, but the hybrid predicted income measure behaves more similarly to asset indices than the household income it is supposed to model. Health inequality magnitudes may be affected by the choice of household SES measure and should be studied in further detail.

Does Socio-Economic Inequality Exist in Low Subjective Well-Being Among Older Adults in India? A Decomposition Analysis Approach

Abstract:According to census 2011, India had nearly 104 millions of 60 years and above population. The share is projected to increase from 8 per cent in 2015 to 29 per cent in 2050, which is a matter of concern as rapid population ageing is accompanied by serious social and economic implications which are often linked with different health outcomes in general and lower subjective well-being (SWB) in particular. This paper aims to focus on how socio-economic inequality affects lower SWB among older adults. Bivariate, binary logistic regression and decomposition analysis were used for carving out the results using data from the Building a Knowledge Base on Population Ageing in India (BKPAI). The effective sample size for the analysis was 9181 older adults. The value of the concentration index for lower SWB was -0.28 in India, depicting that lower SWB was concentrated among older adults with poor socio-economic status. Educational status (22%), living arrangement (13%), trust over someone (13%), self-rated health (6%), instrumental activities of daily living (6%) and cognitive ability (5%) explained significant portion of socio-economic inequality for lower SWB among older adults. Our research highlights the urgent need for more empirical exposure to socio-economic inequality and its dynamic impact on lower SWB among older adults. Moreover, the present study recommends strengthening the current government programme to focus especially on older adults from lower socio-economic status.

Abstract:It is well known that the urban systems, in particular cities, display scaling behaviour regarding socio-economic, infrastructural and individual basic services indicators. However, understanding urbanisation and the links between rural and urban areas is fundamental to making the most of the global transformations happening around the world. In this context, it is important to study the scaling laws based on both the urban and rural regions, going beyond cities. This paper explores the extension of the idea of allometric urban scaling law to study the scaling behaviour of Indian districts, with both the urban and rural population. To proceed, we have chosen districts (both rural and urban) of India, a relatively larger local administrative units, which are more or less independently functional within a country. This interdisciplinary work focus on the scaling analysis of various socio-economic indicators (SEIs) corresponding to the size (population) of four distinct urbanisation classes, namely rural, semi-rural, semi-urban and urban districts. The scaling exponents ( ) were estimated for each classes for the years 2001 and 2011 along with their goodness-of-fit measured by the values. Our rigorous statistical analysis indicates that the scaling laws indeed exist even at the district level for most of the SEIs considered, related to education, employment, housing, health, etc.; the values obtained for these SEIs are very high (often greater than 0.8 or 0.9) in both the years. Moreover, linearity of the scaling factors have been statistically tested and it has been found, at 95% level of confidence, that not all the SEIs behave linearly ( ); some of them are characterised by super-linear ( ) behaviour and some behave sub-linearly ( ). Statistical hypothesis tests have also been performed to test the equality of two scaling factors corresponding to two distinct classes and two different years to understand the differences in scaling relationships amongst increasing urbanisation classes and their changes over time.
