Abstract:Changes in precipitation patterns due to the climate change will significantly affect rainfall erosivity in the future. Information on spatial and temporal variation of rainfall erosivity is highly important to determine the measures to prevent water erosion, which threatens soil productivity and global food security. The main aim of this study was to examine the regional spatial and temporal variations of rainfall erosivity in Turkey. Therefore, CHELSA database and linear USLE <i>R</i> factor model were used, and the reference period rainfall erosivity was calculated for the study area. Observation <i>R</i> factor values calculated using the data from 50 meteorology stations were used to validate the rainfall erosivity model. Following the calibration and validation processes, the model was applied to three different general circulation models (CCSM4, MIROC5, HadGEM2-AO) of the RCP 2.6 and 8.5 emission scenarios, and regional rainfall erosivity of Turkey was projected for 2050 and 2070. The <i>R</i> factor value of reference period was calculated as 78.81 MJ mm ha−1 h−1 year−1 using the average annual rainfall data for 1979–2013. Rainfall erosivity showed a decreasing trend in both emission scenarios of all three global circulation models. The highest decrease in the rainfall erosivity is expected to occur in Mediterranean region of Turkey. In contrast, the rainfall erosivity in Black Sea region is expected to increase in the future. The greatest decrease in the rainfall erosivity (23.66% decrease in 2070) was projected in the RCP8.5 scenario of the CCSM4 global circulation model. The results revealed that the rainfall erosivity in Turkey will heterogeneously be distributed among the regions in the future. The projected decrease or increase in rainfall erosivity is expected to significantly affect the soil and water resources.
