Abstract:The basic mathematical properties of Green's functions used in statistical mechanics as well as the equations defining these functions and the techniques of solving these equations are reviewed. An approach is presented called the Correlated Iteration Theory, which has been developed by the author. This approach differs from all other known variants of perturbation theory for Green's functions by the combination of two factors: the systematic formulation of an algorithm for obtaining subsequent approximations and the consistent consideration of interparticle correlations at each step of the procedure.

Abstract:The statistics of rare events, the so-called black-swan events, is governed by non-Gaussian distributions with heavy power-like tails. We calculate the Green functions of the associated Fokker-Planck equations and solve the related stochastic differential equations. We also discuss the subject in the framework of path integration.

Abstract:Despite its centrality in the mathematical structure of perturbative many-body theory, the total Green's function for the many-body time-dependent Schrodinger equation has been ignored for decades, superseded by single-particle Green's functions, for which a vast portion of the literature has been devoted. In this paper, we give the first computation the total Green's function for the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for a non-interacting system of identical particles, setting the stage for a fresh interpretation of perturbative many-body physics.

Study of non-equilibrium Green's functions beyond Born approximation in open quantum systems

Abstract:We provide a systematic approach to compute different kinds of non-equilibrium Green's functions for open quantum systems which are essentially two-point correlation functions in time. We reveal that the definition of Green's functions based on the Born approximation does not provide the correct results in the leading order of the system-bath coupling. We next provide a systematic correction term in Green's functions by going beyond the Born approximation and incorporating a finite correlation between the system and the bath. We primarily focus on two paradigmatic models of open quantum systems, namely, the dissipative Caldeira-Leggett model and the dissipative spin-boson model. We show that the inclusion of such a correction correctly reproduces the Kadanoff-Baym type equation for the so-called lesser or greater components of the Green's functions and provides the correct long-time result up to the first non-zero order of the system-bath coupling, satisfying the detailed balance condition in thermal equilibrium. We further extend our study to a system coupled to multiple reservoirs simultaneously that are maintained at different temperatures and obtain expressions for non-equilibrium steady-state energy current, once again correct up to the first non-zero order of the system-bath coupling.

Abstract:In non-equilibrium Green's function calculations the use of the Generalized Kadanoff-Baym Ansatz (GKBA) allows for a simple approximate reconstruction of the two-time Green's function from its time-diagonal value. With this a drastic reduction of the computational needs is achieved in time-dependent calculations, making longer time propagation possible and more complex systems accessible. This paper gives credit to the GKBA that was introduced 25 years ago. After a detailed derivation of the GKBA, we recall its application to homogeneous systems and show how to extend it to strongly correlated, inhomogeneous systems. As a proof of concept, we present results for a 2-electron quantum well, where the correct treatment of the correlated electron dynamics is crucial for the correct description of the equilibrium and dynamic properties.

Abstract:In this paper we study the time dependent Schrödinger equation with all possible self-adjoint singular interactions located at the origin, which include the $\delta$ and $\delta'$-potentials as well as boundary conditions of Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin type as particular cases. We derive an explicit representation of the time dependent Green's function and give a mathematical rigorous meaning to the corresponding integral for holomorphic initial conditions, using Fresnel integrals. Superoscillatory functions appear in the context of weak measurements in quantum mechanics and are naturally treated as holomorphic entire functions. As an application of the Green's function we study the stability and oscillatory properties of the solution of the Schrödinger equation subject to a generalized point interaction when the initial datum is a superoscillatory function.

Abstract:The nonequilibrium description of quantum systems requires, for more than two or three particles, the use of a reduced description to be numerically tractable. Two possible approaches are based on either reduced density matrices or nonequilibrium Green's functions (NEGF). Both concepts are formulated in terms of hierarchies of coupled equations---the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) hierarchy for the reduced density operators and the Martin-Schwinger-hierarchy (MS) for the Green's functions, respectively. In both cases, similar approximations are introduced to decouple the hierarchy, yet still many questions regarding the correspondence of both approaches remain open.

Abstract:In his celebrated paper Kontsevich has proved a theorem which manifestly gives a quantum product (deformation quantization formula) and states that changing coordinates leads to gauge equivalent star products. To illuminate his procedure, we make an arbitrary change of coordinates in the Moyal product and obtain the deformation quantization formula up to the third order. In this way, the Poisson bi-vector is shown to depend on \hbar and not to satisfy the Jacobi identity. It is also shown that the values of coefficients in the formula obtained follow from associativity of the star product.

A new Green's function formalism for kinetic energy density functional for atomic and molecular system: Emergence of $N-$dependence using model potentials

Abstract:An accurate expression of the kinetic energy density of an electronic distribution in terms of the single particle reduced density matrix for atomic and molecular systems is a long-standing problem in electron structure theory. Existing kinetic energy density functionals are generally expressed as modifications over kinetic energy of homogeneous electron gas and/or von Weizsäcker kinetic energy. A large class of these functionals also require empirical parametrizations to make accurate predictions of the kinetic energy for atomic and molecular systems restricting their transferability. Moreover, the correct kinetic energy density which produces accurate local properties such as atomic shell structure is still an unsolved problem. In this work, we have developed an exact methodology that can be used to derive the kinetic energy of an electronic system of arbitrary spin multiplicity. One of the attractive features of this present analytical formalism is the possibility of systematic improvement of the kinetic energy by virtue of a novel perturbation series. Applying this methodology to simple model systems such as one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator and homogeneous electron gas produces a qualitatively correct $N$-dependence of kinetic energy as a result. A one-to-one correspondence between our formalism to the traditional Green's function formalism is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Using a recently developed approach for solving the three dimensional Dirac equation with spherical symmetry, we obtain simple representations for the Green's function of the Dirac-Oscillator and Dirac-Coulomb problems. This is accomplished by setting up the relativistic problem in such a way that makes comparison with the nonrelativistic problem highly transparent and results in a map of the latter into the former. An advantage of this representation is in the computational economy as depicted by the number of terms, which are quadratic in the Whittaker functions. These are single terms except for the off-diagonal elements of the Dirac-Coulomb Green's function which, nonetheless, simplifies into the sum of a first order and third order relativistic terms.

Abstract:In mathematical physics, time-dependent Green's functions (GFs) are the solutions of differential equations of the first and second time derivatives. Habitually, the time-dependent GFs are Fourier transformed into the frequency space. Then, analytical continuation of the frequency is extended to below or above the real axis. After inverse Fourier transformation, retarded and advanced GFs can be obtained, and there may be arbitrariness in such analytical continuation. In the present work, we establish the differential equations from which the retarded and advanced GFs are rigorously solved. The key point is that the derivative of the time step function is the Dirac delta function plus an infinitely small quantity, where the latter is not negligible because it embodies the meaning of time delay or time advance. The retarded and advanced GFs defined in this paper are the same as the one-body GFs defined with the help of the creation and destruction operators in many-body theory. There is no way to define the causal GF in mathematical physics, and the reason is given. This work puts the initial conditions into differential equations, thereby paving a way for solving the problem of why there are motions that are irreversible in time.

Abstract:The real-time contour formalism for Green's functions provides time-dependent information of quantum many-body systems. In practice, the long-time simulation of systems with a wide range of energy scales is challenging due to both the storage requirements of the discretized Green's function and the computational cost of solving the Dyson equation. In this manuscript, we apply a real-time discretization based on a piece-wise high-order orthogonal-polynomial expansion to address these issues. We present a superconvergent algorithm for solving the real-time equilibrium Dyson equation using the Legendre spectral method and the recursive algorithm for Legendre convolution. We show that the compact high order discretization in combination with our Dyson solver enables long-time simulations using far fewer discretization points than needed in conventional multistep methods. As a proof of concept, we compute the molecular spectral functions of H$_2$, LiH, He$_2$ and C$_6$H$_4$O$_2$ using self-consistent second-order perturbation theory and compare the results with standard quantum chemistry methods as well as the auxiliary second-order Green's function perturbation theory method.

Abstract:We derive equations of motion for higher order density response functions using the theory of thermodynamic Green's functions. We also derive expressions for the higher order generalized dielectric functions and polarization functions. Moreover, we relate higher order response functions and higher order collision integrals within the Martin-Schwinger hierarchy. We expect our results to be highly relevant to the study of a variety of quantum many-body systems such as matter under extreme temperatures, densities, and pressures.

Efficient temperature-dependent Green's functions methods for realistic systems: compact grids for orthogonal polynomial transforms

Abstract:The temperature-dependent Matsubara Green's function that is used to describe temperature-dependent behavior is expressed on a numerical grid. While such a grid usually has a couple of hundred points for low-energy model systems, for realistic systems in large basis sets the size of an accurate grid can be tens of thousands of points, constituting a severe computational and memory bottleneck. In this paper, we determine efficient imaginary time grids for the temperature-dependent Matsubara Green's function formalism that can be used for calculations on realistic systems. We show that due to the use of orthogonal polynomial transform, we can restrict the imaginary time grid to few hundred points and reach micro-Hartree accuracy in the electronic energy evaluation. Moreover, we show that only a limited number of orthogonal polynomial expansion coefficients are necessary to preserve accuracy when working with a dual representation of Green's function or self-energy and transforming between the imaginary time and Matsubara frequency domain.

Abstract:We consider a general one-particle Hamiltonian H = - \Delta_r + u(r) defined in a d-dimensional domain. The object of interest is the time-independent Green function G_z(r,r') = < r | (z-H)^{-1} | r' >. Recently, in one dimension (1D), the Green's function problem was solved explicitly in inverse form, with diagonal elements of Green's function as prescribed variables. The first aim of this paper is to extract from the 1D inverse solution such information about Green's function which cannot be deduced directly from its definition. Among others, this information involves universal, i.e. u(r)-independent, behavior of Green's function close to the domain boundary. The second aim is to extend the inverse formalism to higher dimensions, especially to 3D, and to derive the universal form of Green's function for various shapes of the confining domain boundary.

Abstract:The pointwise space-time behavior of the Green's function of the three-dimensional relativistic Boltzmann equation is studied in this paper. It is shown that the Green's function has a decomposition of the macroscopic diffusive waves and Huygens waves with the speed $\sqrt{a^2+b^2}$ at low-frequency, the singular kinetic wave and the remainder term decaying exponentially in space and time. In addition, we establish the pointwise space-time estimate of the global solution to the nonlinear relativistic Boltzmann equation with non-smooth initial data based on the Green's function.

Abstract:We improved the decoupling approximation of the double-time Green's function theory, and applied it to study the spin-${1\over 2}$ two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with broken bonds at finite temperature. Our decoupling approximation is applicable to the spin systems with spatial inhomogeneity, introduced by the local defects, over the whole temperature region. At low temperatures, we observed that the quantum fluctuation is reduced in the neighborhood of broken bond, which is in agreement with previous theoretical expectations. At high temperatures our results showed that the quantum fluctuation close to the broken bond is enhanced. For the two parallel broken bonds cases, we found that there exists a repulsive interaction between the two parallel broken bonds at low temperatures.

Abstract:We present a time-linear scaling method to simulate open and correlated quantum systems out of equilibrium. The method inherits from many-body perturbation theory the possibility to choose selectively the most relevant scattering processes in the dynamics, thereby paving the way to the real-time characterization of correlated ultrafast phenomena in quantum transport. The open system dynamics is described in terms of an embedding correlator from which the time-dependent current can be calculated using the Meir-Wingreen formula. We show how to efficiently implement our approach through a simple grafting into recently proposed time-linear Green's function methods for closed systems. Electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions can be treated on equal footing while preserving all fundametal conservation laws.

Abstract:This paper examines the quantum $(2+p)$-spin dynamics of a $N$-vector $\textbf{x}\in \mathbb{R}^N$ through the lens of renormalization group (RG) theory. The RG is based on a coarse-graining over the eigenvalues of matrix-like disorder, viewed as an effective kinetic whose eigenvalue distribution undergoes a deterministic law in the large $N$ limit. We focus our investigation on perturbation theory and vertex expansion for effective average action, which proves more amenable than standard nonperturbative approaches due to the distinct non-local temporal and replicative structures that emerge in the effective interactions following disorder integration. Our work entails the formulation of rules to address these non-localities within the framework of perturbation theory, culminating in the derivation of one-loop $\beta$-functions. Our explicit calculations focus on the cases $p=3$, $p=\infty$, and additional analytic material is given in the appendix.
