Abstract:The fractal model was applied to estimate the gas diffusion and solubility coefficients in non-porous membrane structures characterized by fractal dimension. Analytical expressions were obtained taking into account several parameters such as the diameter of gases, free volume, and glass transition temperature. Theoretical data were validated by comparison with experimental values for hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon-dioxide, methane, ethylene, and propylene gases in membranes prepared from aromatic polynorbornene dicarboximides. In general, the calculated data from the fractal model were in agreement with the experimental data, with the exception of CO2 due to plasticization effects. The outcomes indicate that the fractal model is a useful tool to predict the gas permeability in different types of polymer membranes.
