Abstract:Significance We all intuitively know what it is to be subjectively aware of something. For decades, psychologists have also studied the brain’s mechanisms of directing attention. But awareness and attention are not the same and can be separated. How do they relate? Here, we show that a part of the brain, the right temporoparietal junction, may be involved in a specific relationship in which awareness of an item permits the control of attention on that item.
