Abstract:Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by joint pain and a progressive loss of articular cartilage. Injection of mono‐iodoacetate (MIA), an inhibitor of glycolysis, into the femorotibial joint of rodents promotes loss of articular cartilage similar to that noted in human OA. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of ethanol extract from CTL in mono‐iodoacetate (MIA) induced Osteoarthritis (OA) Rat model. Rat were divided into five groups: Control, MIA control, MIA+Methotrexate (MTX), MIA+CTL 200mg/kg and 500mg/kg. Oral administration CTL for 6 weeks significantly reduced clinical scores compared with MIA control group. In addition CTL dramatically reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells and prevented joint destruction of the knee and paws measured by Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and Micro CT. MTX, disease‐modified anti‐rheumatic drug, DMARD, also dramatically reduced clinical scores and prevented joint destruction of the knee and paws. These results suggest that supplement of CTL could be a possible applicant for ameliorating the degenerative arthritis.
