Abstract:This analysis of Tan's first two novels reveals that her female characters suffer from the strains critics like Amy Ling say result from the double paradox of filling the roles of mother or daughter as minority women in a white, male society. Recognizing this double paradox offers Tan's characters, and her readers, the opportunity to resolve the conflicts between mothers and daughters in The Joy Luck Club. Using the theories of psychologist Kathie Carlson helps readers understand how the protagonist of The Kitchen God's Wife resolves similar conflicts with her daughter and her own mother by seeking support from a mythic mother-figure, a Goddess of her own making.

Abstract:Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club, with the awakening of women’s self-consciousness as one of its themes, revolves around the lives of four Chinese immigrant mothers and their four American-born daughters. Taking An-mei Hsu and Rose Hsu Jordan in The Joy Luck Club as two illustrations, this paper aims to explore the internal and external causes leading to their awakening. After analyzing the embodiment of the female consciousness in these two characters, this paper points out that the internal factors involve their traits and personalities and the external factors deal with their mother-daughter bond and the differences between Chinese and American culture: An-mei, encouraged by her mother’s silent rebellion against Chinese feudal patriarchal society, eventually achieves self-discovery and independence by struggling out of the dilemma and immigrating to America; Rose, a second-generation immigrant, keeps seeking for her own identity while facing both the racial and gender discrimination from American society and, with the help of her mother, succeeds in seizing the power of discourse in her marriage and in shaping her independent personality.

Abstract:Chinese-American writers who live in both Chinese and American cultures are the most sensitive to cultural conflict and integration. Amy Tan is one of those writers who probe deeply into the relationship between the Chinese and American cultures. The Joy Luck Club, a novel that tells stories of four Chinese mothers and their American-born daughters, has caused a great sensation inside and outside the United States and made Tan a famous writer. From the perspective of intercultural communication, Cultural conflicts between four couples of mother and daughter, between husbands and wives arising from the difference in cultural background are looked into from the angles of Chinese obedience to parents and American independence and democracy, Chinese women’s submissiveness and American women’s independence, Chinese family’s honor and American individual achievement, Chinese high-context culture and American low- context culture, Chinese superstition and American science. The causes of the conflicts are also discussed in the aspects of Chinese culture and American culture. Chinese mothers are deeply influenced by the concept of "Three Obedience and Four Virtues", "Resign oneself to Adversity", Etc. However, American daughters are born in the culture that emphasizes "Individualism, Equality, Independence and Freedom." In this thesis, it is also put forward that despite the conflicts, mutual compatibility of two cultures is unavoidable and an inescapable tendency, which reflects the development from the clash to the coexistence of the two cultures in the context of globalization.

Abstract:This paper sets out to investigate Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club , a liminal work written in-between cultures, in the light of Homi Bhabha’s concept of the third space as a site of transformation and transvaluation. It is argued that Tan’s novel is implicated in unexpected forms of resistance as a result of its placement in the borderland of cultures. Thus, exploring the discursive fissures and ideological ruptures inscribed in the novel, the authors seek to bring to fore how the very mainstream accounts of Chinese culture and orientalist archive of knowledge in which the work is embedded are contested in the third-space enounters between subjects of different cultures. Orientalism, Western feminism, American Dream, and multiculturalism are some of the major discourses whose truthfulness and serenity are shown to be precarious and open to questioning, hence the recuperation of the subaltern’s voice through this contrapuntal reading.

Abstract:The development of any kind of literature can not be separated from the ethical culture and natural environment at that time. "The Joy Luck Club" tells the story of two generations of mothers and daughters, and expresses feminist thoughts in a concentrated way. In the study of feminist theory, there is a long-standing controversial question, that is, whether there is an inherent female language expression. Feminist perspective is a branch of feminist narrative literature, which is mainly used to examine women's subjective consciousness, reflect the oppression and influence of male chauvinism on women, and at the same time expose the inequality in reality and sublimate their feminist thoughts through female perspective. This paper will briefly introduce the content of "The Joy Luck Club", discuss the feminist perspective of "The Joy Luck Club" and analyze the feminist voice of "The Joy Luck Club".

Abstract:The article discusses the image of China as an integrant part of Amy Tan’s writings. The imagological approach to the study of Chinese American discourse, as well as discussion of the semantics and poetics of hetero-images and auto-images of Chineseness, American Chineseness, Ameri-canness, provides a comprehensive understanding of the writer’s artistic concept in representing the changing nature of the Chinese American identity. At the same time, the article seeks to open new vistas in Chinese American discourse, to focus on intrinsic textual peculiarities beyond the extrinsic ethnocentric concepts of cultural hybridity and Orientalism, which have been prevalent in academic literary surveys during the latter half of the twentieth century. A comparative approach based on imagology theory allows investigating the multiple dimensions of the ambivalent Chinese American identity through revealing the core images implicitly present in all Amy Tan’s novels. Within American circumstances, the problem of the other cultural background for Chinese American writers constitutes an essential part of their creative quest. The article thus highlights the mechanisms of literary representation of the image of China and explores the ways of artistic literary textualization of Chinese cultural facts. By considering such categories as Chineseness, American Chineseness, and Americanness through the lens of literary imagology, the article provides an interpretation of the Self and the Other distinction in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club. It is argued that the image of China in this novel cannot be viewed as otherness, but as the other Self. The Joy Luck Club is not just a family saga on the life of people of Chinese origin in the American circumstances but also a true representation of a conflict between the knowledge about the world possessed by Chinese mothers and the “American knowledge” of their American-born daughters. The novel represents mutual self-reflected images of the East and the West. The imagological analysis provides grounds for concluding that the novel is not about the distinction between the Self and the Other, but about a world that protagonists can no longer consider either own or alien since it is both for them. In The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan considers problems that reveal the fundamental issues of Chinese American literary and critical discourse: the role of Chinese culture within Chinese American identity, the Self versus the Other, the national and the transnational. The author declares no conflicts of interests.

Abstract:Besides Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, and Gish Jen came to the literary scene with their debut novelsThe Joy Luck ClubandTypical American. Since the 1970s, the "Chin-Kingston debate" on "the real and the fake" representation of Chinese has aroused heated discussion among scholars and Chinese American writers. This article aims at pinpointing the similarities and differences between both writers in their literary representation of Chinese and "Chinese America" in the contemporary American literature. Besides the shared writing techniques between the two writers, they differ greatly in their dealing with the gender knots, Chinese American experience in the U.S. and their respective attitudes that lurking behind their words. Hence, in the light of this perspective, we can better grasp the "typical American" writing strategy of Gish Jen and the typical recourse to Chinese elements in the "Joy Luck Club" stories by Amy Tan, which will shed light on later Chinese American writing.

Abstract:The mother/daughter bond is the central subject of Amy Tan’s two powerful books, The Joy Luck Club and The Bonesetter’s Daughter. Tensions that arise in the novels between a Chinese mother and her Chinese-American daughter are often described by the critics as being the result of two important factors. One is based on the misunderstandings caused by the generational gap, while the other comes from the cultural gap. For a Chinese-born mother the American reality instigates various confusions, as she still views her life with the eyes of her traditional Chinese upbringing. On the other hand, her daughter lacks any profound knowledge about her Chinese ethnicity, which makes her unable to recognize the influences of her mother’s Chinese past over their relationship. But in her novels Tan portrays also the relationship between the Chinese immigrant mother and her mother in China. Their relationship, which grew up exclusively on the grounds of the Chinese culture, is characterized by empathy and appreciation. In this paper I am going to discuss the change that occurred to the mother-daughter relationship after it has been replanted into a different cultural context. The line of argument will reveal in what ways the mother-daughter relationship underwent a significant transformation.

Abstract:Culturally, women, regarded as weak, submissive and emotional social entities, are destined to be silent and inferior to men in a patriarchal society; however, this long-established position for women has caused them shame which today has turned into angst, leading them to question traditions, breaking their silence, revealing their painful yet rebellious experience by means of storytelling, as well as encouraging and hoping for their descendants through self-assertion have a better future. The female Chinese American writer, Amy Tan, with her first renowned novel telling stories of Chinese diaspora in America, The Joy Luck Club (1989), expresses the writer’s faith in women’s better opportunities when they are able to articulate their needs and strengthen their self-determination. This paper discusses women’s fate and faith as shown through different Chinese-immigrant mothers’ life stories that are revealed to their American-born daughters who face a dilemma in life. The mothers’ stories aim to empower their daughters and help them find solutions. Storytelling is an important means for the Chinese-immigrant mothers to communicate with their daughters, inuring the children to back to their ethnic roots, to better knowing about themselves thereby ensuring them their right to choose for their own happiness. To sum up, even if women are fated to be born at a disadvantage, they can have faith in themselves if they struggle hard enough for the chance and change. More or less, women’s fate and faith are likely to go hand in hand like two sides of the same coin, as do sorrow and joy in a person’s life.

Abstract:The Joy Luck Club , a masterpiece by Amy Tan, tells the story of the mother-daughter conflicts, focusing on the differences between Chinese culture and American culture. According to the theory of high-context and low-context cultures put forward by Eward T. Hall, Chinese culture can be classified as a high-context culture, while American culture is classified as a low-context culture. In light of high-context and low-context cultures theory, this paper deeply analyzes mother-daughter conflicts in The Joy Luck Club , aiming to provide reference for exploring the right way to resolve cultural conflict. In this paper, the author introduces the main differences of high and low-context cultures, on the basis of which the cultural conflict between Chinese and American reflected in The Joy Luck Club were summarized and analyzed. The conflicts can be divided into three aspects: different ways of language expression, different understandings of the relationship between parents and children and different ways of emotional expression.

Abstract:In recent years, the study of The Joy Luck Club cannot get rid of the words “cultural conflict between the East and the West”, “post-colonial feminism”, “Chinese identity”, “mother-daughter relationship”. And Tan’s The Joy Luck Club on the surface seems to write about the mode of getting along with mothers and daughters and their difficult life under the conflicts of the two cultural backgrounds between China and the United States. But making a deep analysis, the family formed by them has a unique family model, and in addition to Chinese and Western cultural conflicts and other factors that affect these four families, there is also the traumatic memory of the mothers and daughters. This paper attempts to analyze the traumas of four couples of mothers and daughters in the novel, explore the sources of these traumas. Furthermore, it will explore the impact of these traumas on the relationship between mothers and daughters, and then find out what kind of family model will be formed by the traumatized mothers and daughters.

Abstract:This paper spotlights one of the most influential Chinese American novels, ‘The Joy Luck Club’. Broadly adhering to the principles and orientations of Eco-discourse analysis and using Halliday’s systemic-functional grammar as a framework of analysis, this study uncovers ideologies pointing to an asymmetrical power structure between the mother and the daughter and discusses the underlying Chinese philosophy of mother, which helps daughter find her genuine identity. This paper concludes with revealing the true contradiction behind the conflict of mother-daughter, i.e., the two distinct value systems, and expect people to think and act ecologically, promoting the development of eastern eco-ideology.

Abstract:The film The Joy Luck Club (1993) adapted from Amy Tan's novel of the same title is considered a classic in the representation of Chinese Americans, especially Chinese American women in the past few decades. In many ways, two other films, Face (2002) and Saving Face (2004), share similar themes with The Joy Luck Club: the conflict between mothers and daughters and the tension between Chinese culture and American culture. The conflicts are eventually resolved to some degree, to everyone's satisfaction, to the satisfaction of the Chinese audience in particular. It is important, however, to see the films as a window to American life and society: the theme of liberation presented in the films is to be understood in the context of American topoi, namely, the pursuit of the self and the search for the value of life in a multicultural society. To a large extent, the three films address the American audience rather than the Chinese audience. While they tend towards the promotion of the social status of the Chinese community in America and engage in the representation of the different Chinese cultural features, the films endow the contemporary Chinese Americans with a prominent national identity that is American rather than Chinese.

Abstract:Figurative language can appear in various types and the meaning may not be determined by its components. This study aimed to identify and analyze the meaning of figurative language found in the novel The Joy Luck Club. Two theories were used in this study. The first was theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger, and the second was theory of meaning by Leech as the supporting theory. The data in this study were directly taken from The Joy Luck Club novel. Thirty-six figurative languages were found. They were collected by observation method and data analysis. The collected data were analyzed by using qualitative and descriptive method. This study applied informal method to present the analysis. The result of this study showed that there are nine types of figurative language found in song lyrics. They were allusion, simile, metaphor, irony, personification, hyperbole, dead metaphor, metonymy, and paradox. Most of the figurative language found in those novels were classified in simile. Four of seven types of meaning used in those novels to understand the figurative meaning in the novel, they were connotative meaning, conceptual meaning, affective meaning, and collocative meaning. Abstract:The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, the Chinese American female writer, is rich in Chinese elements, such as Mahjong, the Five Elements and Yin-yang. This article addresses Chinese elements in The Joy Luck Club from the perspective of a cognitive model known as Conceptual Blending Theory. Developed by Fauconnier and others, the theory combines individual chunks of meaning together to produce new meanings. It serves as an effective tool to manifest the complex unity of the text’s meaning in the conceptual blend networks. Additionally, built upon a cognitive linguistic approach, the paper suggests the complementarity of the cognitive linguistic and literary approaches. The conceptual blended networks prompted by dialogues among protagonists and narrative setting throughout the text can better demonstrate the metaphorical meanings through cross-space mapping with its uses and functions in order to explore the writer’s writing intention. It is hoped that this paper will contribute to the development of cognitive linguistics.

Abstract:Suppression of one’s emotions is defined as a shared experience among the March sisters in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, and a large portion of women after the Civil War. Drawing on the failed careers of Jo and Amy and the struggling marriage of Meg, this essay argues that in learning how to suppress oneself and be seen as socially acceptable, the sisters lose their prospects for success and happiness. When the sisters stray from home, their flaws are exposed: Meg’s jealousy, Jo’s anger, and Amy’s greed. A return trip home and time completing labor provide them training for wifehood. Within this labor, each sister confronts their greatest desire, forcing them to contain their desires toward what they want in order to prevent another outburst. The domestic sphere becomes a place for them to come face-to-face with their largest flaw and use the home as a testing ground for how to suppress their true emotions and survive within the expectations of being a wife. In stifling their ambitions and desires outside the domestic sphere through suppression training, the March sisters lose the prospects for unhappy marriages with men that continuously inflame their flaws through belittling behavior and condemnation.

Abstract:Immigrants suffer problematic cultural identities due to their bicultural allegiances to their host and native cultures. They can not be totally free from their ‘being’, the shared cultural and historical experiences. As a result, they follow their cultural practices of native country even in their diasporic existences. At the same time, they adopt and follow the cultural practices of the host country. In fact, they are living in the cultural third space simultaneously oscillating between two cultures. In such cultural in-between’s, the first generation and the second generation immigrants undergo different experience in diaspora. In this article, Chinese American writer Amy Tan’s two fictions namely The Joy Luck Club and The Bonesetter’s Daughter are analyzed focusing on cultural identities of second generation immigrants. The second generation in these narratives is the daughters of Chinese immigrant mothers. Their relationship with their mothers unfolds their simultaneous attraction and distraction to the both native and host culture. Consequently, their cultural identities remain unstable, blurred and in the processes of transformation in the cultural third space of diaspora.
