Abstract:The purpose is to match portions or segments of the continuous speech signal with phonetic symbols (phones, diphones, syllables …). The method consists of using a dynamic comparison algorithm with local optimum which finds the best path in the matrix of recognition scores. These scores are assigned to each phonetic symbol at each stable instant detected in the signal. The method deals with segmentation errors (missing or extra segments). The phonetic transcription of the phase that has been pronounced takes into account the phonological variations inherent in the language itself and due to the differences between various speakers (elisions, “liaisons”… may be used). First results from a database comprising 50 phrases (each less than 2 s long) pronounced by two different male speakers are given. The ultimate goal is to permit the adaptation of existing phonetic dictionaries to new speakers by requiring only a few chosen sentences to be pronounced.
