Abstract:Graphyne and its derivatives, with a unique sp-sp(2) hybridized structure and interesting electronic properties, are predicted to be attractive carbon materials for many practical applications. Here we report well-defined hydrogen substituted graphyne (HsGY) prepared using a facile bottom-up approach with a large area of up to 33 cm(2). Studied directly by HRTEM, selected area electron diffraction and corresponding simulation, the as-synthesized crystalline HsGY nanosheets showed AB stacking with a lattice fringe of 0.445 nm. The aromatic C-H bonds and the acetylene linkages of HsGY provide a large number of active sites for ion binding; the high specific surface area, wide interlayer spacing, hierarchical porous structure, excellent electronic conductivity and low carrier barrier of HsGY also guarantee excellent intercalation and diffusion of sodium ions, making HsGY a promising anode for rechargeable batteries. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the porous HsGY can provide numerous storage sites and deliver a theoretical capacity larger than 1207 mA h g(-1). The prepared HsGY electrodes delivered a high reversible capacity of 600 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1); even at a high current density of 5000 mA g(-1), the as-prepared HsGY electrodes can deliver a stabilized capacity of 320 mA h g(-1) for 5900 cycles, with an excellent capacity retention of 96%.

Abstract:Carbon allotropes are widely used as anode materials in Li batteries, with graphite being commercially successful. However, the limited capacity and cycling stability of graphite impede further advancement and hinder the development of electric vehicles. Herein, through first principles computations, we proposed holey penta-hexagonal graphene (HPhG) as a potential anode material, achieved through active site designing. Due to the internal electron accumulation from π-bond, HPhG follows a single-layer adsorption mechanism on each side of the nanosheet, enabling a high theoretical capacity of 1094 mAh/g without the risk of vertical dendrite growth. HPhG also exhibits a low open circuit voltage of 0.29 V and a low ion migration barrier of 0.32 eV. Notably, during the charge/discharge process, the lattice only expands slightly by 1.1%, indicating excellent structural stability. This work provides valuable insights into anode material design and presents HPhG as a promising two-dimensional material for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Graphyne (GY) is a new type of carbon allotrope, which is viewed as a rapidly rising star in the carbon family referred to as 2D carbon allotropes due to its extraordinary properties. Considering the dynamic nature of the alkyne metathesis reaction, a hydrogen-substituted graphyne (HsGY) film is successfully synthesized on a gas/liquid interface using 1,3,5-tripynylbenzene (TPB) as the precursor. The synthesized HsGY film is used as a sulfur host matrix to be applied in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). The HsGY@S electrode is prepared using S-8 as sulfur source and presents excellent electrochemical performance.
Lithium-Decorated Oxidized Graphyne For Hydrogen Storage By First Principles Study

Abstract:The geometric stability and hydrogen storage capacity of Li decorated oxidized gamma-graphyne are studied based on the first-principles calculations. It is found that oxygen atoms trend to bond with acetylenic carbons and form C-O double bonds on both sides of graphyne. The binding energy of single Li atom on oxidized graphyne is 3.29 eV, owning to the strong interaction between Li atom and O atom. Meanwhile, the dispersion of Li is stable even under a relatively high density. One attached Li atom can at least adsorb six hydrogen molecules around. Benefitting from the porous structure of graphyne and the high attached Li density, a maximum hydrogen storage density 12.03 wt. % is achieved with four Li atoms in graphyne cell. The corresponding average binding energy is 0.24 eV/H-2, which is suitable for reversible storage. These results indicate that Li decorated graphyne can serve as a promising hydrogen storage material. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Due to the structure containing sp-/sp2-hybridized carbon atoms and porous property, graphdiyne (GDY) is predicted and demonstrated as a novel anode material in lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, two different graphdiyne-porphyrin composite materials (GDY/Por and Por@GDY) were prepared by the reaction of the precursors hexaethynylbenzene and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrin or 5,10,15,20-(tetra-4-ethynyphenyl)porphyrin, result in the out-of-plane GDY/Por material through π–π interaction or in-plane conjugated Por@GDY structure. When the as-prepared graphdiyne-porphyrin composite materials were used as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, GDY/Por exhibited more excellent electrochemical performance in capacity, rate performance, and cycling stability than that of Por@GDY. Combined with the theoretical calculations, the improvement can be ascribed to the larger specific surface area as well as the well-defined nitrogen active sites and the organic porphyrin layer intercalation in GDY/Por, which probably led to the interlayer expansion and the increase of the lithium storage ability.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal stands as a promising anode in advancing high-energy-density batteries. However, intrinsic issues associated with metallic Li, especially the dendritic growth, have hindered its practical application. Herein, we focus on molecular combined structural design to develop dendrite-free anodes. Specifically, using hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HGDY) aerogel hosts, we successfully fabricated a promising Li composite anode (Li@HGDY). The HGDY aerogel's lithiophilic nature and hierarchical pores drive molten Li infusion and reduce local current density within the three-dimensional HGDY host. The unique molecular structure of HGDY provides favorable bulk pathways for lithium-ion transport. By simultaneous regulation of electron and ion transport within the HGDY host, uniform lithium stripping/platting is fulfilled. Li@HGDY symmetric cells exhibit a low overpotential and stable cycling. The Li@HGDY||lithium iron phosphate full cell retained 98.1% capacity after 170 cycles at 0.4 C. This study sheds new light on designing high-capacity and long-lasting lithium metal anodes.

Abstract:Two dimensional porous hydrogen substituted graphyne (HsGY), a new member of carbon allotropes, has been synthesized recently (Yang et al., 2019). Here, the hydrogen storage behaviors of Li-decorated HsGY are investigated by using the first-principles calculations. It is found that the Li atom prefers to adsorb over the center of a hexagon ring with the binding energy of −1.91 eV. The interaction between Li and HsGY is attributed to the hybridization and polarization mechanisms. Each Li atom can attach at most four H2 without dissociation of H2 molecule. For double-side Li-decorated HsGY, the H2 gravimetric density can reach up to 11.35 wt<math>%</math>, with the average adsorption energy of −0.25 eV/H2. Our numerical results reveal Li-decorated HsGY could be considered as a new potential H2 storage medium.

Holey Graphite: A Promising Anode Material with Ultrahigh Storage for Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:Recently, the 2019 Nobel prize in chemistry awards to three pioneers in the lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the most commercially used anode for LIBs is still graphite, which suffers from the limited Liion storage of 372 mAh/g. To improve the performance of the intrinsic graphite anode (IGA), we use the ab initio calculations to examine the holey graphite anodes (HGAs) with three hole densities (35%: HGA35, 46%: HGA46 and 61%: HGA61) for LIBs. Remarkably, the maximum Li-ion storages of HGAs are up to 714-1689 mAh/g, which are about 2-4.5 times as high as that of the IGA (372 mAh/g). Besides, the inplane diffusion barrier for Li-ions is also reduced from 0.57 eV (IGA) to 0.35-0.42 eV (HGAs), suggesting a higher Li-ion diffusion rate. The holey structures could open an extra out-plane Li-ions diffusing channel with only one-fifth of the diffusion barrier of that in the IGA, implying an accelerated charge/discharge process in the applications. We also demonstrate the relatively small surface area change ratio of less than 3%-14% in the HGAs upon adsorption of the maximum Li concentration. Therefore, the holey structure is a promising strategy to improve the graphite anode for LIBs significantly. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Graphenylene: A Promising Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries with High Mobility and Storage

Abstract:It is known that low-dimensional carbon allotropes can be used as a new class of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. However, the existing carbon allotropes cannot meet the increasing energy and power demand, and thus there is still a need for further development of new materials for lithium-ion batteries. In the present work, a new graphene allotrope, known as graphenylene, is found to be capable of storing lithium with greater density of energy. Ab initio density functional theory calculations indicate that the unique dodecagonal holes in graphenylene enable lithium ions to diffuse both on and through graphenylene layers with energy barriers no higher than 0.99 eV. Adsorption of a lithium atom on graphenylene is stronger than that on pristine graphene. The highest lithium storage capacities for monolayer and bilayer graphenylene compounds are Li3C6 and Li2.5C6, respectively, which correspond to specific capacities of 1116 and 930 mA h g(-1). Both specific and volumetric capacities of lithium-intercalated graphenylene compounds are significantly larger than those for graphene. The high lithium mobility and large lithium storage capacity demonstrate that graphenylene is a promising anode material for modern lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The two-dimensional fluoride-substituted graphdiyne (F-GDY) and its compound layer structure, F-GDY/Graphene have been investigated as anodes in lithium-ion batteries. According to our calculation, the disadvantages of F-GDY being an anode material are its semi-conductor nature and the relatively weak mechanic strength. Fortunately, these drawbacks can be conquered by composing F-GDY with graphene sheets. The comprehensive process has been developed to evaluate capacities of anode materials. Compared with the common definition of the adsorption energy ( E ad1 ), the step-by-step adsorption energy ( E ad2 ) and ab-initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulation can better address the Li storage capacity. Moreover, instead of using the chemical potential of Li bulk, a more reasonable chemical potential as a function of Li number was developed and employed in estimating the Li adsorption energy on the related structures. Furthermore, the diffusivities of lithium and fluorine were also considered for both the F-GDY and the F-GDY/Graphene. The graphene layer in F-GDY/Graphene can restrict the displacement of F atoms which may lead to a more reversible charge-discharge process.

On the Road to the Frontiers of Lithium‐ion Batteries: A Review and Outlook of Graphene Anodes

Abstract:Graphene has long been recognized as a potential anode for next‐generation lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). The past decade has witnessed the rapid advancement of graphene anodes, and considerable breakthroughs have been achieved so far. In this review, we aim to provide a research roadmap of graphene anodes towards practical LIBs. We start with the Li storage mechanism of graphene and then comprehensively summarize the approaches to improve its electrochemical performances. Firstly, morphologically engineered graphene anodes with porous, spheric, ribboned, defective and holey structures display improved capacity and rate performance owing to their high accessible surface area, interconnected diffusion channels and sufficient active sites. While surface‐modified graphene anodes with less aggregation, fast electrons/ions transportation, and optimal solid electrolyte interphase are discussed, demonstrating the close connection between the surface structure and electrochemical activity of graphene. Secondly, graphene derivatives anodes prepared by heteroatom doping and covalent functionalization are outlined, which show great advantages in boosting the Li storage performances because of the additionally introduced defect/active sites for further Li accommodation. Furthermore, binder‐free and free‐standing graphene electrodes exhibiting great prospects for high‐energy‐density and flexible LIBs are presented. Amorphous Hierarchical Porous GeO X /reduced Graphene Oxide Composite As a High-Performance Anode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:The conventional graphite anode is still insufficient to meet the demand due to its low theoretical specific capacity(372 mAhg-1). Compared to the graphite, the high surface-to-volume ratio and open porous system of graphene shows great advantages:i) fast ion transport enabling the high rate capability, which is an obstacle for graphite with microsize bulk lithium diffusion; ii) the large surface areas of graphene can provide more electrochemical reaction active sites for energy storage. Meanwhile, Graphene is an excellent substrate to host active nanomaterial for energy applications due to its high conductivity, large surface area, structural flexibility, and chemical stability.1,2Overall, the superior electronic conductivity and mechanical properties of graphene make it suitable for fabrication into high-performance composites with other anode materials for LIBs. Recently, Alloy-type anodes (Si, Ge, Sn, Sb, etc.) have attracted much attention due to their higher Li storage capacity than the graphite anode that is currently used in Li-ion batteries. Compared with the silicon etc., Germanium has high theoretical capacity (1384 mAh/g), good lithium diffusivity (400 times faster than in silicon), and high electrical conductivity (104 times higher than silicon).3 However, the practical usage of Ge as an anode material is hindered by dramatic volume changes (∼300%) caused by insertion/extraction of lithium ions, which results in crack and pulverization, and loss of electrode contact.4 Herein, we developed a facile synthesis method (solution-phase reactions) to form hybrid materials of amorphous hierarchical porous GeOx whose primary particles are 3∼7 nm diameter anchored on reduced grapheme oxide (RGO) sheets for lithium ion battery applications. The high rate performance of mesoporous GeOx/RGO composite is attributed to (1) the amorphous hierarchical porous GeOx whose primary particles are 3∼7 nm diameter anchored on conducting RGO stabilize the cycling performance and rate capability; (2)fast charge transfer reaction at the large interfacial area of RGO between hybrid electrode and liquid electrolyte. Design and Synthesis of Graphene/sno2/polyacrylamide Nanocomposites As Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Tin dioxide (SnO2) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries owing to its large theoretical capacity (1494 mA h g-1). However, its practical application is hindered by these problems: the low conductivity, which restricts rate performance of the electrode, and the drastic volume change (400%). In this study, we designed a novel polyacrylamide/SnO2 nanocrystals/graphene gel (PAAm@SnO2NC@GG) structure, in which SnO2 nanocrystals anchored in three-dimensional graphene gel network and the polyacrylamide layers could effectively prevent the agglomeration of SnO2 nanocrystals, presenting excellent cyclability and rate performance. A capacity retention of over 90% after 300 cycles of 376 mA h g-1 was achieved at a current density of 5 A g-1. In addition, a stable capacity of about 989 mA h g-1 at lower current density of 0.2 A g-1 was achieved.
In Situ Fabrication of Porous Graphene Electrodes for High-Performance Lithiumoxygen Batteries

Abstract:These years, Li-O-2 batteries attract wide interest because of its high theoretical energy density. However, the catalytic activity and porous structure of cathode remains a great challenge. In this work, we developed a hierarchical porous graphene foam to serve as a battery cathode, which has much richer active sites for cathodic reaction and channels for Li+ transfer and O-2 diffusion. The cathode exhibits a superior specific capacity as high as 9559 mAh g(-1) at 57 mA g(-1) and remains a high-rate capability of 3988 mAh g(-1) at an increased current density of 285 mA g(-1). Benefiting from the well-designed cathode structure, the battery can be stably operated for 150 cycles with a stable voltage profile and voltage efficiency up to 65%. The well-designed graphene has a potential to be a superior free-standing cathode to other carbon-based materials due to its good combination of its hierarchical and porous structure, large surface area, abundant defects and excellent mechanical stability. Three-dimensional Porous Graphene Microsphere for High-Performance Anode of Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:A stable graphene anode with high storage Li+ capacity for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is to be desired for energy storage. In the present paper, a new scalable method is adopted for preparation of three-dimensional porous graphene microspheres (3DGPM) by a template sacrificing method. The 3DGPM were utilized as an anode for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The macrostructure of the 3DGPM anode was characterized by the scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. As anode for LIBs, the first discharge/charge capacities of the 3DGPM are 851.1 and 402.4 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1). The 500th discharge capacity of the 3DGPM anode at a current density of 2 A g(-1) is 245.8 mA h g(-1). Besides, the 3DGPM exhibit low charge transfer resistance and high Li-ion diffusivities. The porous nanospheres of graphene offer voids for volume expansion and pathways for fast electron transfer during repeated cycling. We believe that the specific micro-/nano-hollow microspherical structure is the main origins of their high electrochemical storage Li performance.
From Graphite to Porous Graphene-Like Nanosheets for High Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Graphene nanosheets possess a promising potential as electrodes in Li-ion batteries (LIBs); consequently, the development of low-cost and high-productivity synthetic approaches is crucial. Herein, porous graphene-like nanosheets (PGSs) have been synthesized from expandable graphite (EG) by initially intercalating phosphoric acid, and then performing annealing to enlarge the interlayer distance of EG, thus facilitating the successive intercalation of zinc chloride. Subsequently, the following pyrolysis of zinc chloride in the EG interlayer promoted the formation of the porous PGS structure; meanwhile, the gas produced during the formation of the porous structure could exfoliate the EG to graphene-like nanosheets. The synthetic PGS material used as LIB anode exhibited superior Li+ storage performance, showing a remarkable discharge capacity of 830.4 mAh·g-1 at 100 mA·g-1, excellent rate capacity of 211.6 mAh·g-1 at 20,000 mA·g-1, and excellent cycle performance (near 100% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles). The excellent rate performance is attributed to the Li+ ion rapid transport in porous structures and the high electrical conductivity of graphene-like nanosheets. It is expected that PGS may be widely used as anode material for high-rate LIBs via this facile and low-cost route by employing EG as the raw material.

Abstract:Porous activated graphene sheets have been for the first time exploited herein as encapsulating substrates for lithium ion battery (LIB) anodes. The as-fabricated SnO2 nanocrystals-porous activated graphene sheet (AGS) composite electrode exhibits improved electrochemical performance as an anode material for LIBs, such as better cycle performance and higher rate capability in comparison with graphene sheets, activated graphene sheets, bare SnO2 and SnO2-graphene sheet composites. The superior electrochemical performances of the designed anode can be ascribed to the porous AGS substrate, which improves the electrical conductivity of the electrode, inhibits agglomeration between particles and effectively buffers the strain from the volume variation during Li+-intercalation-de-intercalation and provides more cross-plane diffusion channels for Li+ ions. As a result, the designed anode exhibits an outstanding capacity of up to 610 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) after 50 cycles and a good rate performance of 889, 747, 607, 482 and 372 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 mA g(-1), respectively. This work is of importance for energy storage as it provides a new substrate for the design and implementation of next-generation LIBs exhibiting exceptional electrochemical performances.

Abstract:SnO2 has been considered as one of the most promising anode materials for Li-ion batteries due to its theoretical ability to store up to 8.4 Li+. However, it suffers from poor rate performance and short cycle life due to the low intrinsic electrical conductivity and particle pulverization caused by the large volume change upon lithiation/delithiation. Here, we report a facile synthesis of graphene/SnO2 xerogel hybrids as anode materials using epoxide-initiated gelation method. The synthesized hybrid materials (19% graphene/SnO2 xerogel) exhibit excellent electrochemical performance: high specific capacity, stable cyclability, and good rate capability. Even cycled at a high current density of 1 A/g for 300 cycles, the hybrid electrode can still deliver a specific capacity of about 380 mAh/g, corresponding to more than 60% capacity retention. Abstract:Graphdiyne (GDY) has been considered as an appealing anode candidate for K-ion storage since its triangular pore channel, alkyne-rich structure, and large interlayer spacing would endow it with abundant active sites and ideal diffusion paths for K-ions. Nevertheless, the low surface area and disordered structure of bulk GDY typically lead to unsatisfied K storage performance. Herein, we have designed a GDY/graphene/GDY (GDY/Gr/GDY) sandwiched architecture affording a high surface area and fine quality throughout a van der Waals epitaxy strategy. As tested in a half-cell configuration, the GDY/Gr/GDY electrode exhibits better capacity output, rate capability, and cyclic stability as compared to the bare GDY counterpart. In situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy/Raman spectroscopy/transmission electron microscopy are further applied to probe the K-ion storage feature and disclose the favorable reversibility of GDY/Gr/GDY electrode during repeated potassiation/depotassiation. A full-cell device comprising a GDY/Gr/GDY anode and a potassium Prussian blue cathode enables a high cycling stability, demonstrative of the promising potential of the GDY/Gr/GDY anode for K-ion batteries.
