Abstract:Objective: Black humour permits expression of what may otherwise be unspeakable and is observed and used by staff working in mental health services. The aim of this study was to identify how humour, particularly black humour, was perceived by different health professionals in psychiatric practice. Methods: Participants were invited to complete a survey. Data was collated and statistically analysed by a biostatistician. Chi square and univariate tests were performed to identify associations between categories. Results: The sub-question relating to the benefits of black humour was analysed. Main findings were that the majority of staff perceived black humour to be beneficial in psychiatric practice (n = 564 of 710 total; 79.4%), particularly if they used general and black humour with patients, families and colleagues. Those who observed black humour being used collegially about patients and families were more likely to find black humour beneficial; and even those uncomfortable with black humour being used by colleagues were more likely to see the benefits of black humour. Conclusion: Black humour was perceived to be beneficial in mental health settings when used mindfully, sensitively and in context. Further study with patients and relatives may shed light on how widely the perception of benefit is shared.
The use of humour in nursing education: An integrative review of research literature

Abstract:Objectives: Humour is an integral part of communication and often used in education to support learning, build relationships, lessen stress, and create a positive environment. This paper presents results from an integrative review of literature that aimed to explore how humour is used in nursing education. Design: Integrative literature review. Data sources: CINAHL, INFORMIT, Medline and Proquest education. Review methods: An integrative review of published research was conducted in the above-mentioned databases during March to June 2022. A hand search in reference lists of published articles was also conducted. Search terms followed PEO (population, exposure and outcome) and included 'Faculty, Nursing', 'Nurse* Student*', 'Baccalaureate', 'Humo?r', 'Laugh*', 'Wit', 'Fun*', 'Comedy', 'Educat*', 'Teach*', 'Learn*' and 'Curricul*'. Inclusion criteria stated articles must have a research component investigating how humour is used and received by students in nursing education. The articles were peer reviewed and published after 2001. Conference abstracts, editorials and articles describing the use of humour in nursing education without research evidence were excluded. Grey literature was not included. Results: The search yielded two hundred and one articles, 10 of which met the inclusion criteria. Studies were primarily qualitative (n = 9) with 1 quantitative study. Five themes were found among the articles (1) Humour builds social relationships (2) Humour aids learning/critical thinking (3) Humour and stress relief (4) Humour to focus attention and (5) Negative use of humour. Conclusion: Findings suggest that the use of humour in nursing education lowers stress, improves attention, increases focus and improved information retention. However, findings also conclude that negative humour is not conducive to learning. Research is needed to explore the use of humour in nurse education in order to develop teaching approaches that include culturally sensitive humour to enhance the student learning experience and reduce stress.

Abstract:Although scholars note advantages and disadvantages to using humor and profanity, influential leaders in the Death Positive Movement (DPM) use both message features to motivate end-of-life (EOL) advance care planning (ACP). Through the lens of expectancy violations theory (EVT), this study examined relationships between perceived humor, profanity in messages, trait profanity use in receivers, perceived offensiveness, perceived speaker effectiveness, and perceived message effectiveness. Participants ( N = 604) were randomly exposed to a podcast about ACP containing clean humor, profane humor, or no humor. Results indicated that profanity and perceived humor were positively related to offensiveness, and offensiveness was negatively related to perceived speaker and message effectiveness. When perceived as non-offensive, perceived humor was positively related to perceived speaker and message effectiveness. Surprisingly, profane messages offended profane receivers more than they offended less-profane receivers. These results suggest that to be maximally effective, ACP motivators should use humor cautiously and avoid profanity.

Abstract:For centuries Africans were captured and brought to America in bondage and forced to forge a new culture. The development of a Black culture gave rise to humor as a coping mechanism against the oppressive state they found themselves in. For centuries, humor became a way to protest their conditions by creating various humorous styles that infused social political commentary on oppression as a sign of defiance, while also providing hope for the hopeless. This commentary seeks to introduce leisure scholars to how Black Twitter (Sharma, 2013) users' expressions of humor during the COVID-19 pandemic serve as a form of resistance to injustices and inequalities, while simultaneously adopting coping strategies to reclaim power and control in order to speak their truth all while cultivating individual and collective identity in/through leisure.

Finding common experiences and frustrations, and reinterpreting them as a group, develops a camaraderie and power over previously difficult situations. 3. Humor and laughter can help us in the workplace and in our personal lives. After you put humor and laughter into your own life, you can take these skills to your patients. You can show them how to use mirth and silliness to live life on life's terms or, said another way, to thrive in adversity by accessing joy in absurdity.

Abstract:Background: The nursing work environment is often stressful and can lead to burnout. The use of humor may help nurses adapt and cope. Although most would agree that, in general, humor can help build camaraderie and ease tense situations, little is known about how nurses use humor in their professional lives. Purpose: The study's main purpose was to explore how humor is used and perceived by nurses in the workplace. Methods: A sample of LPNs, RNs, and advanced practice RNs was recruited in the United States. Participants were interviewed via the videoconferencing platform Zoom. Data from the video recordings, audio transcripts, and investigators' field notes were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Sixteen nurses were interviewed about their use of humor, whether intentional or spontaneous, in the workplace. Three main themes were identified: entertainment , influencing others , and well-being . Participants reported using humor with self and others, including patients, families, and colleagues. Reported benefits include emotional regulation, relationship building, and work enjoyment. Some participants noted feeling insecure over when and whether the use of humor was "appropriate." Conclusions: The results indicate that nurses' use of humor in the workplace had many benefits. Participants reported that humor could relieve tension, create bonds and strengthen relationships, and enhance both learning and work environments. Many recognized that humor can also be maladaptive and harmful, and that sensitivity and caution are part of using humor skillfully. Still, the benefits of humor appear to outweigh the risks. We conclude that humor is a useful tool nurses can and should use to optimize their nursing experience.

Abstract:Brazil is known to have a humorous population, but could this humor moderate the relation between negative events and blood markers? This study was designed to conceptually replicate the work of Martin and Dobbin (1988) to investigate whether the sense of humor moderates the immunosuppressive effect of stress. Ninety participants (81% female and 19% male) from a community service project provided by a university laboratory filled out questionnaires of negative events and humor styles. For the immunosuppressive markers, fluid was drawn to describe serum levels of cortisol, glycemia, and neutrophils-lymphocytes ratio (NLR). The results, in general, did not corroborate the effects found by the authors. None of the four humor measures were directed related to negative events or immunosuppressive markers. Although self-deception humor moderates NLR and negative events, showing that it could be used and be protective when there are no or few negative events, but increasing the number of negative events, the use of this humor style is detrimental. The relationship between stressor events and biochemical markers was not moderated by styles of humor for a Brazilian underserved population sample.

Abstract:Humor is a potential communication strategy to accomplish various and potentially conflicting consultation goals. We investigated humor use and its reception in diabetes consultations by analyzing how and why humor emerges and its impact on the interaction. We did this by using an interactional sociolinguistics approach. We recorded 50 consultations in an Irish diabetes setting. Analysis of the humor events drew on framework analysis and on concepts from Conversation Analysis and pragmatics. The study also comprised interviews using tape-assisted recall. We identified 10 humor functions and two umbrella functions. A key finding is that most humor is relationship-protecting humor initiated by patients, that is, they voice serious messages and deal with emotional issues through humor. Our findings imply that patients’ and providers’ awareness of indirect communication strategies needs to be increased. We also recommend that researchers employ varied methods to adequately capture the interactive nature of humor.

Humor-Based Messaging in Testicular Cancer Awareness Campaigns: A Comparative Critical Review

Abstract:Extensive research showcases the extent and efficacy of humor-based messaging in general health promotion. However, the work describing humor's use within testicular cancer (TC) awareness is less developed. The aim of this comparative critical review was to determine the impact of using humor-based messaging in TC awareness campaigns to achieve a baseline assessment from which future research can be modeled. A literature search was conducted using seven databases to locate relevant literature. Three research questions guided this investigation: (1) To what extent has humor been used in TC awareness campaigns? (2) What does the literature reveal about the use of humor-based messaging on relevant health outcomes? (3) What are the limitations within current TC awareness strategies? Six studies were included in the review, of which three directly assessed the use of humor in TC awareness vis-à-vis intervention designs. Humor-based strategies were implemented to enhance knowledge of TC and testicular self-examination (TSE) procedures, reduce anxiety surrounding detection threat, and promote TSE. The rhetoric provided to men via various health interventions relied on humor and slang to promote TSE among males. Despite the small sample size of the included studies, this review determined that humor may be useful in reducing uncomfortable feelings surrounding TSE, increasing awareness of TC, and promoting TSE. When using humor-based messaging, however, the audience and type of humor implemented must be considered. Limited research exists assessing the long-term impact humor in TC promotion on health behavioral changes, easing anxieties related to detection, and increased self-efficacy surrounding TSE.
The effects of humor in health promotional messages on a college campus

Abstract:This study examined how perceived threat moderates the effects of message type (humor vs. non-humor) on attitude and behavior intentions toward a mental health public service announcement (PSA) on a college campus. To investigate the relationships, a between-subject experimental survey was employed for 209 undergraduate students. Findings revealed a significant interaction effect between message type and perceived threat on attitude toward the PSA, visiting intention to a health center, and eWOM intention. Moreover, the moderated mediating role of attitude toward the PSA on visiting intention to a health center and eWOM intention was observed.
Humor and poignancy: Exploring narrative pathways to face death and bereavement

Abstract:Themes of death and grief emerge in media entertainment in ways that are both poignant and humorous. In this experimental study, we extend research on eudaimonic narratives about death to consider those that are hedonic. Participants read a story about a woman giving a eulogy for her friend that was manipulated to be either poignant-focused or humor-focused, and answered questions about their responses to the story, feelings of connectedness with others, and death acceptance. The narrative conditions elicited similar levels of narrative engagement and appreciation, but the humor-focused narrative elicited more enjoyment than the poignant-focused narrative. Connectedness did not differ between conditions. However, the humor-focused narrative elicited more death acceptance when controlling for participants' personal loss acceptance and grief severity, and individual differences in the dark tetrad personality traits, trait depression, and religious upbringing. We tested these effects in an integrated path model and found that the model fit the data well and the narrative pathways explained variance in both death acceptance and connectedness. Our findings have implications for how death and grief are depicted in media entertainment: namely, that death is an inherently poignant topic and the addition of humorous elements in bereavement narratives may be especially effective in increasing death acceptance.

Abstract:Humor in the practice of medicine carries with it both benefits and inherent risks. Included within the risks are legal risks. Traditional causes of action involving the use of humor are breach of contract, defamation, trademark infringement, harassment or hostile work environment, and intentional or negligent infliction of emotional distress. However, in the medical context, there is precedent for humor or jokes used during the patient-physician encounter serving as a basis for medical malpractice claims as well. Physicians should be aware of the potential legal liabilities of humor and approach its use with caution and mindfulness.
Laughing in the Face of Fear (of Disease Detection): Using Humor to Promote Cancer Self-Examination Behavior

Abstract:This research examines the possible benefit of using humor to reduce anxiety associated with performing cancer self-examination behaviors. In Study 1, 187 undergraduates read a humorous public service announcement (PSA) script promoting either breast or testicular self-exams. Results suggest that perception of humor reduced anxiety about self-exams, which, in turn, related to more positive self-exam attitudes. Simultaneously, humor perception associated with greater message processing motivation, which, in turn, associated with more supportive self-exam attitudes. Self-exam attitudes also positively associated with self-exam intentions. These results were largely replicated in Study 2. Further, self-exam intentions predicted self-exam behavior 1 week later. However, consistent with past research, the humorous and serious messages did not generate differences in subsequent self-exam behavior, though the intention-behavior relationship was stronger and significant for those exposed to the humorous versus the serious messages. In light of these findings, and given that humor has the advantage of attracting and holding attention in real message environments, the use of carefully constructed humor appeals may be a viable message strategy to promote health detection behaviors.

The Dubious Practice of Sensationalizing Anatomical Dissection (and Death) in the Humanities Literature

Abstract:Past anatomical dissection practice has received recent attention in the humanities and social science literature, especially in a number of popular format books. In these works, past ethically dubious dissection practices (mostly from the 1700 to 1800s, though they had their origins much earlier on) are again revisited, including stealing the dead for dissection. There are extremely simple, yet very important, lessons to be had in these analyses, including: do not exploit the dead and treat the dead with dignity, respect, and reverence. In this paper, we highlight that these principles apply not just to anatomists but to all parties concerned with bodies for dissection, including journalists and authors from the humanities writing on anatomical dissection whether in the historical or modern-day context. Not too infrequently these same authors/publishers resort to sensationalist language in titles, text, and/or promotion blurbs in a bid to grab attention and sell books. These actions, yet again, exploit dissection subjects for commercial purposes. The use of insensitive and sensationalist language that is designed to shock, fails to set good precedent for young impressionable students and paints an entirely backward picture of modern-day anatomy for intending or existing donors and their families. We suggest that all who participate in anatomical endeavours should strive to do so with reverence toward the dead, including armchair journalists and humanities authors who, just like their hands-on anatomical colleagues, should employ dignified, sensitive, and respectful language that is not sensationalist.
Different attitudes toward humor between Chinese and American students: evidence from the Implicit Association Test

Abstract:Although cross-cultural research indicates that Chinese people demonstrate less humor than do Americans, little research addresses the reasons. This cross-cultural difference may be largely due to different implicit attitudes toward humor held by Chinese and Americans, deeply rooted in the two cultural traditions. Both self-report evaluation and the Implicit Association Test (IAT) were used to compare Chinese and American attitudes toward humor. Although 60 Chinese undergraduate students showed no significant difference from 33 American exchange students in explicit attitudes toward humor, the former associated humor more frequently with unpleasant adjectives and seriousness with pleasant adjectives on the IAT; the opposite pattern was found for the American group. This indicated a negative implicit attitude toward humor among the Chinese students.

Abstract:Humorous and eudaimonic entertainment are often treated as theoretically distinct media experiences. Prior research has examined unique outcomes of meaningful entertainment, including making sense of difficulties (MSOD), connectedness, and helping intentions. The present study ( N = 275) experimentally manipulated the presence of humor in a film about cancer to examine how humor relates to these outcomes. Results show that, through the mechanisms of character identification and cancer anxiety, humor experiences positively predict MSOD and feelings of connectedness. This study also presents preliminary findings on a new measure of character coping humor that may be more suitable for use in poignant or somber message contexts. Future research directions concerning the role of moving humor are discussed.

Humor Styles in Healthcare Professionals: A Correlational Study

Abstract:Using humor as a caregiving strategy can help professionals perceive daily and work-related events from a more optimistic and light-hearted perspective. The main objective of this study was to analyze humor styles among health care professionals. A cross-sectional and correlational design was employed. Data were collected using the Humor Styles Questionnaire, which measures four humor styles: affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-defeating humor. Health care professionals scored higher in positive humor than negative humor. Age exhibited a negative correlation with positive humor. Significant differences were observed between marital status and affiliative and self-enhancing humor, professional category and hospital unit with aggressive humor, shift work and self-enhancing humor, and type of contract and experience with affiliative humor. Health care professionals employ various humor styles based on their social and work contexts. It is crucial for health care professionals to receive training in the use of positive humor to consciously avoid humor styles that can hinder well-being.
Teacher Humor Style and Attention Span of Grade 7 Students

Abstract:This study delved into the relationship between Teacher Humor Style and the Attention Span of Grade 7 Students. Utilizing a descriptive-correlation research design, the researcher conducted a comprehensive exploration, employing surveys to gather perceptions from students and statistical analyses to unravel the interplay between humor and attention. The findings reveal a moderately extensive use of humor across various indicators, fostering an engaging and enjoyable learning environment. The students demonstrated an extensive duration of focus and active participation, complemented by swift attention recapture abilities. Contextually relevant humor, including puns and subject-related jokes, emerged as a key component of this positive classroom atmosphere. The study also employed a Multiple Linear Regression Model, showcasing the significant influence of various humor indicators on attention span. Recommendations extend to the Department of Education, encouraging the integration of humor-focused professional development for educators. School heads are urged to foster a positive school culture supportive of diverse humor strategies. Teachers are recommended to adopt a reflective approach, continually adjusting their humor strategies based on student responses. For students, an awareness of the positive impact of humor on learning experiences is highlighted. Future researchers are encouraged to delve deeper into cultural nuances and conduct longitudinal studies to observe sustained impacts.
Exploring humor as a coping factor against depressive mood and fear of progression in people with multiple sclerosis with moderate disability: A cross-sectional analysis of a rehabilitation cohort

Abstract:Background: People with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) face disease-related stress throughout their lives, often resulting in depressive mood and fear of progression (FoP). People with a pronounced sense of humor demonstrate greater resilience to stress and tend to perceive threats as challenges. This research investigates whether humor can be identified as a relevant coping factor in pwMS regarding depressive mood and FoP. Methods: Participants were 77 German inpatients aged 25-64 years with predominantly relapsing-remitting MS. Blockwise regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between humor skills (Sense of Humor Scale, SHS), depressive mood (Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, CES-D), and fear of progression (Fear of Progression-Questionnaire, FoP-Q), adjusting for demographic, disease-specific, and self-management variables. Correlational and moderator analyses were conducted to evaluate the impact of humor styles (Comic Style Markers, CSM) and self-observation (as a self-distancing measure, Questionnaire to Assess Resources and Self-Management Skills) on these relationships. Results: The summed SHS score was found to be a significant unique determinant for less depressive mood (CES-D, RΔ = 0.05, p = .005), low FoP (FoP-Q sum score, RΔ = 0.06, p = .004), and greater anxiety coping (FoP-Q anxiety coping, RΔ = 0.06, p = .007). Only light humor style was associated with specific FoP-Q scales; the variable dark humor style was not correlated with any study variable. The subscale self-observation failed to moderate between SHS and emotional disorders. Conclusion: Data indicate that humor skills in pwMS are associated with less depression and FoP, which argues for incorporating adaptive humor as a coping resource into psychosocial interventions for pwMS. However, further validation is needed through larger and longitudinal trials.
