Abstract:Vertebrates evolved some 550 million years ago (Mya) and the vertebrate classes include three classes of fish (jawless, cartilaginous and bony) as well as amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The adaptive immune system arose in cartilaginous fish about 500 Mya and involved the acquisition of the recombination-activating genes (RAG) and two waves of extensive gene duplication. As animals evolved the number of immunoglobulin classes increased and it is clear that IgY was central to antibody evolution. The role of RAG and gene organization is introduced.
