Abstract:Compared with other ocean basins, annual resolution long-term series of sea-level records in the South China Sea (SCS) are still rare. Here we first analyzed the correlation mechanism between the oxygen stable isotopes (delta O-18) of Porites coral and instrumental sea-level, sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall of the SCS, and NINO 3.4 SST during 1980-2015 CE (Common Era); and we then quantitatively reconstructed sea-level at an annual resolution based on the coral delta O-18 in the SCS. The results show that the sea-level fell slightly (-0.73 +/- 0.27 mm/yr) during 1850-1900 CE; then has continuously risen (1.31 +/- 0.06 mm/yr) with a total increase of 152 & PLUSMN; 7 mm from 1900 to 2015 CE. On the inter-annual timescale, ENSO by mediating the overflow effect of seawater in the Western Pacific Warm Pool and the location of storm genesis in the western Pacific, indirectly affects sea-level, rainfall and SSS, which is finally reflected in changes in coral delta O-18 in the SCS. On the long-term timescale, especially since the 1900s, the gradual increase in SST and glaciers and ice sheets meltwater injected into the ocean due to the continuous warming mainly caused by human activities has not only promoted the rise of sea-level, but also caused a gradual negative bias of delta(18)Oseawater (i.e. a gradual decrease of SSS), these processes are faithfully recorded by coral delta O-18. Compared with SST, SSS or delta(18)Oseawater may play a more important role in promoting the negative bias of coral delta O-18 in the SCS. Our study not only provides a better understanding of sea-level history and relationship mechanism around the SCS during 1850-2015 CE, but also may have the potential to provide a valuable proxy for the accurate quantitative reconstruction of sea-level at an annual resolution over a longer time scale for recent past periods.

Abstract:Understanding past deep‐sea temperature and sea‐water oxygen isotope ratios is fundamental to environmental Earth science. For example, it provides crucial insight into past ice‐volume variations, an important climate system feedback. Moreover, deep‐sea temperature is important to deep‐sea ecology and biogeochemical cycling. Here we compare deep‐sea temperature and sea‐water oxygen isotope ratios from model‐based deconvolution of benthic foraminiferal carbonate δ18O with clumped isotope‐based deep‐sea temperature data in 1000‐year timesteps over the Cenozoic. To assess wider implications of the observed differences, we quantitatively evaluate a range of potential explanatory hypotheses—such as diagenetic overprints, carbonate ion effects, ice‐sheet morphology changes, and warm saline deep‐water admixture—but find that, individually, none can explain the observed differences satisfactorily. We then evaluate the implications of possible combined effects and recent advances in clumped isotope temperature calibration. We find that combined consideration of a recently proposed cool clumped isotope calibration and possible carbonate ion or pH influences can provide results that approximate deep‐sea temperature reconstructions based on conventional δ18Oc deconvolution. The match can be further improved if modest warm saline deep‐water contributions are considered during past warm periods. This contrasts with ice‐volume and ice‐sheet morphology changes, which appear unrealistic or insignificant, respectively. Our quantitative comparison offers a means toward formulation of a comprehensive and internally consistent understanding of Cenozoic variability in sea level (ice volume), GIA‐corrected ice‐sheet heights and mean ice δ18O, sea‐water δ18O, sea‐water δ18Ow, deep‐sea temperature, and deep‐sea [CO32−] variations.

Abstract:Much of our understanding of Cenozoic climate is based on the record of δ 18 O measured in benthic foraminifera. However, this measurement reflects a combined signal of global temperature and sea level, thus preventing a clear understanding of the interactions and feedbacks of the climate system in causing global temperature change. Our new reconstruction of temperature change over the past 4.5 million years includes two phases of long-term cooling, with the second phase of accelerated cooling during the Middle Pleistocene Transition (1.5 to 0.9 million years ago) being accompanied by a transition from dominant 41,000-year low-amplitude periodicity to dominant 100,000-year high-amplitude periodicity. Changes in the rates of long-term cooling and variability are consistent with changes in the carbon cycle driven initially by geologic processes, followed by additional changes in the Southern Ocean carbon cycle.

Dimensional analysis identifies contrasting dynamics of past climate states and critical transitions

Abstract:While one can unequivocally identify past climate transitions, we lack comprehensive knowledge about their underlying mechanisms and timescales. Our study employs a dimensional analysis of benthic stable isotope records to uncover, across different timescales, how the climatic fluctuation of the Cenozoic are associated with changes in the number of effective degrees of freedom. Precession timescales dominate the Hothouse and Warmhouse states, while the Icehouse climate is primarily influenced by obliquity and eccentricity timescales. Notably, the Coolhouse state lacks dominant timescales. Our analysis proves effective in objectively identifying abrupt climate shifts and extremes. This is also demonstrated using high-resolution data from the last glacial cycle, revealing abrupt climate shifts within a single climate state. These findings significantly impact our understanding of the inherent stability of each climate state and the evaluation of (paleo-)climate models' ability to replicate key features of past/future climate states and transitions.

Abstract:A review of short-term (<3 myr: c. 100 kyr to 2.4 myr) Cretaceous sea-level fluctuations of several tens of metres indicates recent fundamental progress in understanding the underlying mechanisms for eustasy, both in timing and in correlation. Cretaceous third- and fourth-order hothouse sea-level changes, the sequence-stratigraphic framework, are linked to Milankovitch-type climate cycles, especially the longer-period sequence-building bands of 405 kyr and 1.2 myr. In the absence of continental ice sheets during Cretaceous hothouse phases (e.g. Cenomanian–Turonian), growing evidence indicates groundwater-related sea-level cycles: (1) the existence of Milankovitch-type humid-arid climate oscillations, proven via intense humid weathering records during times of regression and sea-level lowstands; (2) missing or inverse relationships of sea-level and the marine 18 O archives, i.e. the lack of a pronounced positive excursion, cooling signal during sea-level lowstands; and (3) the anti-phase relationship of sea and lake levels, attesting to high groundwater levels and charged continental aquifers during sea-level lowstands. This substantiates the aquifer-eustasy hypothesis. Rates of aquifer-eustatic sea-level change remain hard to decipher; however, reconstructions range from a very conservative minimum estimate of 0.04 mm a –1 (longer time intervals) to 0.7 mm a –1 (shorter, probably asymmetric cycles). Remarkably, aquifer-eustasy is recognized as a significant component for the Anthropocene sea-level budget.

Abstract:Since 65 million years ago (Ma), Earth's climate has undergone a significant and complex evolution, the finer details of which are now coming to light through investigations of deep-sea sediment cores. This evolution includes gradual trends of warming and cooling driven by tectonic processes on time scales of 105to 107 years, rhythmic or periodic cycles driven by orbital processes with 104- to 106-year cyclicity, and rare rapid aberrant shifts and extreme climate transients with durations of 103 to 105 years. Here, recent progress in defining the evolution of global climate over the Cenozoic Era is reviewed. We focus primarily on the periodic and anomalous components of variability over the early portion of this era, as constrained by the latest generation of deep-sea isotope records. We also consider how this improved perspective has led to the recognition of previously unforeseen mechanisms for altering climate.

Abstract:Much of our understanding of Earth’s past climate comes from the measurement of oxygen and carbon isotope variations in deep-sea benthic foraminifera. Yet, long intervals in existing records lack the temporal resolution and age control needed to thoroughly categorize climate states of the Cenozoic era and to study their dynamics. Here, we present a new, highly resolved, astronomically dated, continuous composite of benthic foraminifer isotope records developed in our laboratories. Four climate states—Hothouse, Warmhouse, Coolhouse, Icehouse—are identified on the basis of their distinctive response to astronomical forcing depending on greenhouse gas concentrations and polar ice sheet volume. Statistical analysis of the nonlinear behavior encoded in our record reveals the key role that polar ice volume plays in the predictability of Cenozoic climate dynamics.

Abstract:Coastal communities around the world are increasingly exposed to extreme events that have been exacerbated by rising sea levels. Sustainable adaptation strategies to cope with the associated threats require comprehensive understanding of past and possible future changes. Yet, many coastlines lack accurate long-term sea level observations. Here, we introduce a novel probabilistic near-global reconstruction of relative sea-level changes and their causes over the period 1900 to 2021. The reconstruction is based on tide gauge records and incorporates prior knowledge about physical processes from ancillary observations and geophysical model outputs. We demonstrate good agreement between the reconstruction and satellite altimetry and tide gauges (if local vertical land motion is considered). Validation against steric height estimates based on independent temperature and salinity observations over their overlapping periods shows moderate to good agreement in terms of variability, though with larger trends in three out of six regions. The linear long-term trend of the resulting global mean sea level (GMSL) record is 1.5±0.19 mmyr-1 since 1900, a value consistent with central estimates from the 6th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Multidecadal trends in GMSL have varied with enhanced rates in the 1930s, near-zero rates in the 1960s, and a persistent acceleration (0.08±0.04 mmyr-2) thereafter. As a result, most recent rates have exceeded 4 mmyr-1. Largest regional rates (>10 mmyr-1) over the same period have been detected in coastal areas near western boundary currents and the larger tropical Indo-Pacific region. Barystatic mass changes due to ice-melt and terrestrial water storage variations have dominated the sea-level acceleration at global scales, but sterodynamic processes are the most crucial factor locally, particularly at low latitudes and away from major melt sources. These results demonstrate that the new reconstruction provides valuable insights into historical sea-level change and its contributing causes complementing observational records in areas where they are sparse or absent.

Abstract:Throughout the Phanerozoic and more, the Earth has experienced cold and hot periods, which are typically associated with long‐lasting (hundreds of million years, Ma) greenhouse and icehouse climate regimes. Now, most published sea‐level curves report two main maxima in the Cretaceous and Ordovician superimposed on a multitude of short‐term fluctuations. The big humps are shown to be predominantly the results of the plate tectonic configuration, not icehouse and greenhouse regimes, suggesting that the small oscillations are related to continental ice variations. From this point of view, it can be inferred that polar ice caps are present almost all the time, and climate regime changes appear much more frequent and shorter than usually considered and are not well‐documented from glaciogenic deposits. Relying on short‐term oscillations, the volume of continental ice can be retrieved over the Phanerozoic.

Abstract:There is considerable uncertainty about future sea‐level projections due to the current poor understanding of the vulnerability and sensitivity of ice sheets to global warming. Fossil coral reefs represent a unique archive of sea‐level and associated environmental changes that extend far beyond instrumental records. Here, recent advances in this field are summarized, focusing on periods of Earth history typified by rapid sea‐level rise and short‐term climate excursions. Sea‐level and reef response records from the Last Deglaciation, and periods characterized by higher sea‐level stands and short‐term and low‐magnitude sea‐level oscillations such as the Mid to Late Holocene and the Last Interglacial are synthesised. Special emphasis is given to understanding how coral reefs have responded to these changes in terms of reef development, architecture and composition. Finally, seven major challenges and future research directions are identified.

Abstract:The Earth has witnessed the emergence of continental-sized ice sheets, starting with Antarctica and gradually extending to both hemispheres over the past 40 million years. These ice accumulations have had a dramatic impact on both paleoclimate and sea level, substantially influencing sediment deposition in the continental margins. However, understanding sediment accumulation on an orbital scale in continental margins remains limited because of the scarcity of high-resolution, chronologically constrained sedimentary records. Here, we conducted a highly resolved cyclostratigraphic analysis based on natural gamma radiation (GR) series in depth domain at the continental margin of the South China Sea. We established a 22.8 m.y.-long high-resolution astronomical time scale spanning from the Miocene to the Quaternary by tuning the GR records to the global deep-sea benthic foraminifera carbon isotope curves and the 405 k.y. eccentricity cycles. The m.y.-scale sea-level changes since the Miocene were reconstructed through the sedimentary noise modeling of the 405-k.y.-tuned GR series. These reconstructions aligned with regional and global sea-level changes. The phase correlation between the filtered 1.2 m.y. cycles of sea-level change curves (dynamic noise after orbital tuning and ρ1 median models) from δ13Cbenthic and tuned GR series and the 1.2 m.y. obliquity amplitude modulation cycles revealed a shift from an anti-phase to an in-phase relationship across the middle Miocene climate transition (ca. 13.8 Ma), suggesting extensive expansion of the Antarctic ice sheet played a key role. In addition, a shift from an in-phase to an anti-phase relationship during the late Miocene (ca. 8 Ma and 5.3 Ma), indicating ephemeral expansion of the Arctic ice sheets or the changes in carbon cycle involving the terrestrial and deep ocean carbon reservoirs, might be the primary driver of eustatic changes. Furthermore, obliquity forcing and changes in meridional gradients in insolation that transported poleward flux of heat, moisture, and precipitation increased ice accumulation in both pole ice sheets and nonlinearly transferred high-latitude signals to low-latitude regions. This phenomenon is supported by the observation of strong obliquity signals in low latitude during global climate cooling interval. Our results suggest that m.y.-scale sea-level variations respond to astronomically induced climate change and ice sheet dynamics of both poles. This work contributes a highly resolved low-latitude geological archive to the future reconstruction of paleoclimate evolution on a global scale.

Abstract:Earth's climate underwent secular structural evolution and cooling since the Pliocene Warmth, punctuated by increasing thermal gradients between the Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) and the surrounding cooler regions of Eastern Pacific Cold Tongue and extra-tropics. One key mechanism for deciphering the climate evolution since Pliocene is the shoaling of the ocean thermocline, but much remains unknown about the upper-water structure of the western Pacific Warm Pool, the heat engine of the climate system, and its linkage to global ocean circulations. Here, by a newly made series of millennial-resolved delta 18O and delta 13C records of paired mixedlayer and thermocline dwelling planktonic foraminifera from IODP Site U1489 drilled in the center of WPWP, the trends of cooling and respired carbon content decreasing in the WPWP thermocline since 4 Ma are revisited and diagnosed. Our data allows us to propose that, the tropical Pacific upper-water circulation cell had shoaled and shrunk and the vertical mixing from deeper waters may have increased, since the Pliocene. Development towards a modern-style Warm Pool was initially onset at 3.1 and finalized at 0.7 Ma, respectively.
Spatially Heterogeneous Responses of Planktonic Foraminiferal Assemblages Over 700,000 Years of Climate Change

Abstract:Aim To determine the degree to which assemblages of planktonic foraminifera track thermal conditions. Location The world's oceans. Time Period The last 700,000 years of glacial–interglacial cycles. Major Taxa Studied Planktonic foraminifera. Methods We investigate assemblage dynamics in planktonic foraminifera in response to temperature changes using a global dataset of Quaternary planktonic foraminifera, together with a coupled Atmosphere–Ocean General Circulation Model (AOGCM) at 8000‐year resolution. We use 'thermal deviance' to assess assemblage responses to climate change, defined as the difference between the temperature at a given location and the bio‐indicated temperature (i.e., the abundance‐weighted average of estimated temperature optima for the species present). Results Assemblages generally tracked annual mean temperature changes through compositional turnover, but thermal deviances are evident under certain conditions. The coldest‐adapted species persisted in polar regions during warming but were not joined by additional immigrants, resulting in minimal assemblage turnover. The warmest‐adapted species persisted in equatorial regions during cooling with similarly minimal assemblage change. Assemblages at mid‐latitudes mostly tracked temperature cooling and warming. Main Conclusions Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages were generally able to track or endure temperature changes: as climate warmed or cooled, bio‐indicated temperature also became warmer or cooler, although to a variable degree. At polar sites under warming and at equatorial sites under cooling, the change in bio‐indicated temperature was less than, or even opposite to, what would be expected from estimated environmental change. Nevertheless, all studied species persisted across the study interval, regardless of thermal deviance—a result that highlights the resilience and inertia of planktonic foraminifera on an assemblage level to the last 700,000 years of climate change.

Climate of the Past

Abstract:Abstract. A range of future climate scenarios are projected for high atmospheric CO2 concentrations, given uncertainties over future human actions as well as potential environmental and climatic feedbacks. The geological record offers an opportunity to understand climate system response to a range of forcings and feedbacks which operate over multiple temporal and spatial scales. Here, we examine a single interglacial during the late Pliocene (KM5c, ca. 3.205±0.01 Ma) when atmospheric CO2 exceeded pre-industrial concentrations, but were similar to today and to the lowest emission scenarios for this century. As orbital forcing and continental configurations were almost identical to today, we are able to focus on equilibrium climate system response to modern and near-future CO2. Using proxy data from 32 sites, we demonstrate that global mean sea-surface temperatures were warmer than pre-industrial values, by ∼2.3 ∘C for the combined proxy data (foraminifera Mg∕Ca and alkenones), or by ∼3.2–3.4 ∘C (alkenones only). Compared to the pre-industrial period, reduced meridional gradients and enhanced warming in the North Atlantic are consistently reconstructed. There is broad agreement between data and models at the global scale, with regional differences reflecting ocean circulation and/or proxy signals. An uneven distribution of proxy data in time and space does, however, add uncertainty to our anomaly calculations. The reconstructed global mean sea-surface temperature anomaly for KM5c is warmer than all but three of the PlioMIP2 model outputs, and the reconstructed North Atlantic data tend to align with the warmest KM5c model values. Our results demonstrate that even under low-CO2 emission scenarios, surface ocean warming may be expected to exceed model projections and will be accentuated in the higher latitudes.

Abstract:Using new and published marine fossil radiocarbon ( 14 C/C) measurements, a tracer uniquely sensitive to circulation and air-sea gas exchange, we establish several benchmarks for Atlantic, Southern, and Pacific deep-sea circulation and ventilation since the last ice age. We find the most 14 C-depleted water in glacial Pacific bottom depths, rather than the mid-depths as they are today, which is best explained by a slowdown in glacial deep-sea overturning in addition to a "flipped" glacial Pacific overturning configuration. These observations cannot be produced by changes in air-sea gas exchange alone, and they underscore the major role for changes in the overturning circulation for glacial deep-sea carbon storage in the vast Pacific abyss and the concomitant drawdown of atmospheric CO 2 .

Abstract:AbstractDuring the late Eocene, the Earth’s climate experienced several transient temperature fluctuations including the Vonhof cooling event (C16n.1n; ~35.8 Ma) hitherto known mainly from the southern oceans. Here we reconstruct sea-surface temperatures (SST) and provide δ18O and δ13C foraminiferal records for the late Eocene and earliest Oligocene in the North Sea Basin. Our data reveal two main perturbations: (1), an abrupt brief cooling of ~4.5 °C dated to ~35.8 Ma and synchronous with the Vonhof cooling, which thus may be a global event, and (2) a gradual nearly 10 °C temperature fall starting at 36.1 Ma and culminating near the Eocene-Oligocene transition at ~33.9 Ma. The late Priabonian temperature trend in the North Sea shows some resemblance IODP Site U1404 from the North Atlantic, offshore Newfoundland; and is in contrast to the more abrupt change observed in the deep-sea δ18O records from the southern oceans. The cooling in the North Sea is large compared to the pattern seen in the North Atlantic record. This difference may be influenced by a late Eocene closure of the warm gateways connecting the North Sea with the Atlantic and Tethys oceans.

Abstract:The response of the ocean overturning circulation to global warming remains controversial. Here, we integrate a multiproxy record from International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1490 in the western equatorial Pacific with published data from the Pacific, Southern and Indian Oceans to investigate the evolution of deep water circulation during the Miocene Climate Optimum (MCO) and Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT). We find that the northward export of southern-sourced deep waters was closely tied to high-latitude climate and Antarctic ice cover variations. Global warming during the MCO drove a progressive decrease in carbonate ion concentration and density stratification, shifting the overturning from intermediate to deeper waters. In the western equatorial Pacific, carbonate dissolution was compensated by increased pelagic productivity, resulting in overall elevated carbonate accumulation rates after ~16 Ma. Stepwise global cooling and Antarctic glacial expansion during the MMCT promoted a gradual improvement in carbonate preservation and the initiation of a near-modern Pacific overturning circulation. We infer that changes in the latitudinal thermal gradient and in Southern Ocean zonal wind stress and upper ocean stratification drove radically different modes of deep water formation and overturning across the MCO and MMCT.

Abstract:The last quarter century spans the publication of the first assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 1990 and the latest report published in 2013–2014. The five assessment reports appearing over that interval reveal a marked increase in the number of paleoclimate studies addressing the climate of the last 2000 years (the Common Era). An important focus of this work has been on reconstruction of hemispheric and global temperatures. Several early studies in this area generated considerable scientific and public interest, and were followed by high‐profile and sometimes vitriolic debates about the magnitude of temperature changes over all or part of the Common Era and their comparison to 20th‐ and 21st‐century global temperature increases due to increasing levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases. Behind the more public debates, however, several consistent themes of scientific inquiry have developed to better characterize climate variability and change over the Common Era. These include attempts to collect more climate proxy archives and understand the signals they contain, improve the statistical methods used to estimate past temperature variability from proxies and their associated uncertainties, and to compare reconstructed temperature variability and change with climate model simulations. All of these efforts are driving a new age of research on the climate of the Common Era that is developing more cohesive and collaborative investigations into the dynamics of climate on time scales of decades to centuries, and an understanding of the implications for modeled climate projections of the future. Abstract:The ocean heat content (OHC) and associated surface stratification in tropical oceans are ideal variables to monitor global climate change. However, the variations in surface stratification of the tropical Indian Ocean at the millennial time scale have been less understood. In this context, the present study aimed at reconstructing the sea surface temperature (SST) and thermocline water temperature (TWT) using Mg/Ca of planktonic foraminifera in the sediments of the Andaman Sea, which is one of the hot centers in the Indo-Pacific warm pool (IPWP) over the past 42 ka. The study results confirm the SST changes are consistent in response to the high-latitude temperature records with strong sub-orbital and millennial variations, while the TWT patterns trend remarkably different from the millennial-scale SST and show the variations correspond to the natural summer insolation that triggers the latitudinal movements of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Furthermore, salinity influences the thermal differences (ΔT=SST-TWT) by varying the vertical temperature and stratification. Analysis of available data shows that the mean northward position of ITCZ would input more freshwater into the Andaman Sea. Freshwater lids can reduce mixing by acting as effective barriers and preventing heat from transferring from the surface to the subsurface, thereby causing subsurface cooling and increased stratification. In contrast, more southward ITCZ (boreal winter monsoon) supplies less freshwater into the Andaman Sea. A highly saline surface water and air cooling promotes mixing and subsurface warming, resulting in decreased stratification. The study results reveal a millennial-scale vertical thermal seesaw synchronizing in the tropical Indian Ocean with abrupt Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) changes. During the Bolling-Allerod (B/A) warming period, the dynamic AMOC maintains the surface water stratification by controlling the subsurface cooling processes with increased precipitation and freshwater brought by the northward ITCZ. In contrast, Younger Dryas (YD) and Heinrich events (H) are characterized by reduced summer monsoon precipitation associated with the sluggish AMOC and southward ITCZ, resulting in less stratification and subsurface warming in the Andaman Sea. The thermal proxy records adopted in the study afford robust evidence on the millennial-scale variability in surface stratification driven synchronously by AMOC and regional evaporation vs. precipitation changes in the tropical Indian Ocean, offering new insights into the impacts of the IPWP OHC on abrupt climate changes.

Abstract:We present a high‐resolution study covering the past 19 ka from the southeastern Mediterranean Sea, based on benthic foraminiferal faunas and their stable oxygen and carbon isotopes. These data are integrated with previously published and newly acquired planktic foraminiferal data from the same sediment core in order to investigate the benthic‐planktic coupling and its response to past sub‐orbital climate variability. On a millennial timescale, foraminiferal communities and their isotopic signatures vary following three main time periods (late glacial, sapropel S1 (~10.1‐6.5 ka), and mid‐ to late‐Holocene). Within these intervals, we identified short‐time‐scale changes related to the carbon export and hydrological conditions. During the deglaciation, and except for the Younger Dryas, the coupled benthic‐planktic data indicate an overall poorly mixed water column with a low productivity. During S1 event, our data confirm the presence of a highly stratified water column, with enhanced primary productivity export to the deep sea, being associated to high Nile River activity. While the foraminiferal ecosystem is strongly driven by the combined influence of overturning circulation and the Nile River activity until the end of the African Humid Period, we suggest a more regional eastern Mediterranean climatic‐driven response of the foraminiferal community over the mid‐ to late Holocene. A strong multi‐centennial variability, probably associated to solar forcing, was found for both benthic and planktic records and a supplementary 1600‐yrs mode was found for the benthic data, suggesting a potential overturning circulation‐driven forcing for the latter.
