Abstract:Several studies are in favor of utilizing immediate preoperative hypnosis to prevent perioperative anxiety which increases the risk of postoperative complications [1, 2]. Medical hypnosis is defined by the American Psychological Association as "a state of consciousness including a focus of attention as well as diminished peripheral attention, characterized by an increased ability to respond to a suggestion."[3]To our knowledge, there is no study estimating the effectiveness of preoperative hypnosis on preoperative anxiety when dispensed several days in advance. The objectives of this pilot exploratory study are to describe the feasibility of a formal hypnosis session carried out a few days before a hysterectomy, and to obtain preliminary estimations of its effectiveness.
