Abstract:The previous papers took their research sample from the top universities, but this paper took the study sample from a local normal university in which there are 296 non-English major freshmen lack of good English-learning basis. By dint of the SPSS 25.0 analysis of the questionnaire based on the 5-point Likert scale and the digital portfolios produced by MosoTeach online teaching platform, the present study has explored the current situation of the autonomous English learning among the sample of 296 students. The findings revealed that these college freshmen exhibited the medium level of autonomous English learning (AEL) with the mean score 3.1034, which cannot be regarded as good AEL ability or bad one. As for the gender difference, there was a significant disparity between the male students’ AEL and the female students’. The mean in AEL of the female (3.1902) was superior to that of the male (2.9383). The correlation between Section 1 (self-management ability and psychology of autonomous English learning) and Section 2 (autonomous learning behaviour) in the AELS was significantly high in a positive direction with the correlation coefficient R being 0.747 and the regression model between them was established as, Y=-0.41+0.89X. However, there existed a big gap between their ability and psychology of AEL and their AEL behaviour. Meanwhile, the moderate level of AEL for these students was also testified by the digital portfolios in the MosoTeach platform. Finally, towards the situation of these students’ AEL, the countermeasure and suggestions were put forward subsequently. It is anticipated that the paper can provide implications for future studies on promoting learner autonomy in college English teaching.
