Abstract:In this work, copper-doped zinc sulfide quantum dots (ZnS:Cu QDs) were developed as ratiometric fluorescent probes to detect tetracycline (TC) in milk. With the increasing of TC concentration, the fluorescence at 578 nm of ZnS:Cu QDs was quenched, while a new fluorescence at 520 nm was significantly enhanced due to the formation of a green-emitting complex of Zn2+ and TC on the surface of probes. The fluorescence intensity ratio (I520/I578) have a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.98) with the concentration of TC in the range of 0.2-2.0 μM. The detection limit was calculated to 149 nM, which is lower than the allowable level of TC (about 180 μM) in milk set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Finally, the fluorescent test papers have been also prepared using ZnS:Cu QDs as ink by painting on a piece of filter paper. With the addition of TC, the orange test paper produced green spots that became more and more obvious with a dose-discerning ability as low as 2 μM. This work demonstrated a great potential of ratiometric fluorescent probe for the easy and visual detection of TC in complicated real samples.

Abstract:Ti 2 C quantum dots (QDs) with rich surface functional groups have been synthesized using a hydrothermal method, and used to detect tetracycline (Tc) based on enhanced fluorescence. The interaction between the surface functional groups of Ti 2 C QDs and Tc enhanced the fluorescence of Tc at 514 nm, which is used to detect Tc quickly and accurately. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity was linear to the concentration of Tc in the range of 50.0–30.0 μM, with a detection limit of 21.6 nM. Furthermore, the Tc-Ti 2 C QDs detection system was evaluated for detection of Tc in milk and artificial urine. This study demonstrates a new and simple strategy for Tc detection, which is important for food safety and human health.

Abstract:A novel fluorescent probe based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) coupled with N-doped carbon dots (CDs) was prepared and used for specific recognition and sensitive determination of tetracycline (TC). N-doped CDs were synthesized using citric acid as a carbon source and ethylenediamine as a nitrogen source by a microwave assisted pyrolysis method. The determination conditions such as the solvents, material amount, pH value, and temperature were optimized. The CDs-MIPs have the best quenching on TC in water. The proposed method used for TC determination in milk powder samples had a detection limit of 0.054 μg mL −1 and a wide range of 0.5–30 μg mL −1 . Meanwhile, satisfactory recoveries were obtained ranging from 95 to 108%. Oxytetracycline, chlorotetracycline and most of the coexisting substances showed no obvious interference indicating that the CDs-MIP probe exhibited high selectivity due to the presence of imprinted sites. Charge transfer from CDs-MIPs to TC may be through the mechanism of fluorescence quenching. This work gives a feasible strategy for the synthesis of N-doped carbon dot based molecularly imprinted polymers used as a fluorescent sensor in the food analysis field.

Abstract:In this work, a rapid, specific, and visual ratiometric fluorescence probe was constructed for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) determination based on zinc-doped carbon quantum dots (Zn-CDs). In the presence of TCH, the blue fluorescence at 440 nm originating from Zn-CDs was quenched, and the green fluorescence at 515 nm stemming from TCH was enhanced. The inner filter effect (IFE) and the chelation between Zn and tetracycline are the main mechanisms for the conversion of spectra. The spectrum and color change completed and stabilized within 1 min, indicating the possibility of real-time detection of TCH. The detection range for TCH is 0.1–50 μM, and the low detection limit is 61.1 nM. In addition, Zn-CDs-based test strips were successfully applied to direct visual identification of TCH in actual samples of river water and milk, indicating the possibility of their practical application.

Abstract:This study developed a dual-readout system utilizing fluorescence and colorimetry based on iron oxide quantum dots (IO-QDs) for detecting tetracycline (TCy). IO-QDs were synthesized within 6 h using L-leucine as a surface modifier, achieving a more efficient route. Upon interaction with TCy, IO-QDs exhibited a significant decrease in fluorescence response and observable color changes, while fluorescence lifetime remained consistent regardless of TCy presence. Moreover, IO-QDs' fluorescence response remained stable across various temperatures. The Förster resonance energy transfer distance of less than 2 nm and a quenching constant of 2.90 × 1012 M-1s-1 indicated static quenching in the presence of TCy. Additionally, significant changes in observed and corrected fluorescence efficiency suggested the involvement of the inner filter effect in the fluorescence quenching of IO-QDs. The synthesized IO-QDs were then utilized for selective and rapid fluorescence-based TCy detection, showing a linear range of 0.5 to 80 μM. Simultaneously, a colorimetric method for TCy detection was established, demonstrating a good linear relationship within the range of 0.5 to 20 μM. The detection limits for TCy were determined as 0.539 and 0.329 μM using fluorescence and colorimetric approaches, respectively. Furthermore, IO-QDs were applied to detect real samples, and the dual-readout probe exhibited satisfactory recoveries, confirming the practical reliability of the developed method for analyzing milk and drinking water samples.

Abstract:A newly designed fluorescence probe made from a hybrid quantum dot/mesoporous silica/molecularly imprinted polymer (QD/MS/MIP) was successfully created, and the probe was used for the detection of tetracycline (TC) in serum sample. QD/MS/MIP was characterized by transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiment and fluorescence spectroscopy. Tetracycline, which is a type of broad-spectrum antibiotic, was selected as the template. The monomer and the template were combined by covalent bonds. After the template was removed to form a binding site, a hydrogen bonding interaction formed between the hole and the target molecule. Moreover, when rebinding TC, a new complex was produced between the amino group of QD/MS/MIP and the hydroxyl group of TC. After that, the energy of the QDs could transfer to the complex, which explains the fluorescence quenching phenomenon. The fluorescent intensity of QD/MS/MIP decreased in 10 min, and an excellent linearity from 50 to 1000 ng mL(-1) was correspondingly obtained. This composite material has a high selectivity with an imprinting factor of 6.71. In addition, the confirmed probe strategy was successfully applied to serum sample analyses, and the recoveries were 90.2%-97.2% with relative standard deviations of 2.2%-5.7%. This current work offers a novel and suitable method to synthesize QD/MS/MIP with a highly selective recognition ability. This composite material will be valuable for use in fluorescence probe applications.

Abstract:Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CQDs) with high fluorescent, water-soluble, low-toxicity properties were synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. The prepared N, S-CDs exhibited high selectivity in detection of tetracyclines (TCs) and displayed a fast-responsive fluorescence quenching signal in the mixture, which are mainly attributed to the inner filter effect (IFE). The synthesized N, S-CQDs are successfully used as a fluorescent nanoprobe for the determination of CTC in milk samples (with excitation/emission maxima at 373/424 nm). The limit of detection (LOD) is 71 ng mL<sup>−1</sup>, and the recoveries of spiked samples range from 96 to 104% with a relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 2.7% (<i>n</i> = 3). Additionally, the cytotoxicity and optical imaging performance of N, S-CQDs were preliminarily evaluated. The results indicate the low-toxicity and good biocompatibility of the N, S-CQDs and their promising future as fluorescent-imaging agents in pharmaceutical analysis.

Abstract:Exploring materials with the dual functionality of detecting and removing tetracycline (TC) residues is crucial because of the environmental and health risks posed by antibiotic overuse. This study introduces a dual-emissive luminescent probe, CDs@ZSM-5:Eu3+, created through a solvent-free method combined with subsequent Eu3+ion exchange. The nanocomposite's blue emission, originating from carbon dots (CDs), is quenched by TC via an internal filtering effect, while an antenna effect triggers a strong red fluorescence of a TC-Eu3+chelate. The ratiometric fluorescence changes in CDs@ZSM-5:Eu3+ endow a self-calibrated sensing mechanism for TC, offering a low detection limit of 5.04 nM and a broad detection range of 0.01-50 μM. Demonstrated in real milk samples, the probe exhibits high selectivity and accuracy in detecting TC. The nanocomposite also displayed an impressive TC removal capacity of 238.1 mg g-1 in water, ascribing to the enrichment and electrostatic attraction effects of ZSM-5 toward TC molecules. This research offers a facile strategy for constructing multifunctional zeolite-based hybrids for simultaneous TC detection and removal from aqueous solutions.
Ratiometric fluorescence and visual determination of tetracycline antibiotics based on Y3+ and copper nanoclusters–induced cascade signal amplification

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescence probe is proposed for sensitive and visual detection of tetracyclinee (TC) based on cascade fluorescence signal amplification induced by bovine serum albumin–stabilized copper nanoclusters (BSA-CuNCs) and yttrium ions (Y 3+ ). TC can combine with Y 3+ to form the complex (TC-Y 3+ ) to enhance the fluorescence of TC at 515 nm. Then, positively charged TC-Y 3+ and negatively charged BSA-CuNCs was bonded together by electrostatic interactions to achieve the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process. With the increase of TC concentration, the fluorescence intensity of TC-Y 3+ at 515 nm (F 515 ) gradually increased; meanwhile, the fluorescence intensity of BSA-CuNCs at 405 nm (F 405 ) decreased gradually. The ratio of F 515 and F 405 was used for the quantitative determination of TC. The linear range of the constructed fluorescent probe is 1.0 to 60.0 μM, and the limit of detection is 0.22 μM. The method was successfully applied to the determination of TC in spiked milk with recoveries ranging from 94.3 to 112%. Furthermore, the color of this platform can be observed from dark violet to bright green under the UV lamp. Since the response time of the reaction is less than 10 s, an intelligent sensing platform based on the use of the smartphone as image acquisition equipment was also established to realize rapid on-site and portable detection of TC through the colorimetric recognition application.
Mesoporous silica nanoparticles encapsulated carbon quantum dots for detection of tetracycline

Abstract:In this paper, a novel and selective fluorescent probe for nanocomposite materials were developed by in situ growth carbon quantum dots (CQDs) in the channel of mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs) for the detection of tetracycline (TC). The CQDs@MSNs nanocomposites were prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. The CQDs incorporated into MSNs can act as the low-toxicity and stable fluorescent probes for the detection of TC. Under optimal conditions, a fluorescence emission peak at 439 nm was observed for the CQDs@MSNs when the excitation wavelength was set as 360 nm, and the fluorescence peak intensity can be gradually quenched by TC via inner filter effect, a good linear relationship between the concentration of TC from 0 to 100 μM, and the fluorescence quenching intensity of CQDs@MSNs was obtained, with a limit detection of 5.19 μM. More importantly, the CQDs@MSNs have been successfully used for TC determination in real samples.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) is a vital class of broad-spectrum antibiotics widely employed. However, its extensive use raises associated concerns. Due to its persistent nature, there is a risk of trace amounts of TC contaminating food. The complex composition of food samples has sparked considerable interest in developing selective and sensitive TC sensors. Here, a novel sensing material, gCDs@ZIF-8, where ZIF-8 is a metal–organic framework composed of Zn 2+ and 2-methylimidazole, was developed by incorporating fluorescent green carbon dots (gCDs) into the ZIF-8 for TC detection. Consequently, the synthesized gCDs exhibited green emission and a specific response to tetracycline. The incorporation of gCDs into ZIF-8 enhances sensitivity, making it a valuable probe for the quantification of TC. The detection limit for gCDs alone was 0.42 μM, and when encapsulated in ZIF-8, the sensitivity increased, resulting in a limit of detection of 157 nM. Quantifying tetracycline in milk samples demonstrated spike recoveries ranging from 95 to 105 percent. The assay displayed excellent precision, with a relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 3) of less than 2% at each concentration point. The robustness and ruggedness of the assay were evident through the probe's stable shelf life, water stability, and a broad working pH range. Validation tests confirmed the gCDs@MOF-based sensing system's capability to detect tetracycline in various sample matrices. The method's environmental friendliness was assessed using three metric tools (AGREE, AGREEprep, and the Complex GAPI), all confirming its superior eco-friendliness.

Abstract:The massive residues of tetracycline (TC) have caused serious harm to the human body and the environment, so it is urgent to explore a portable, on-site, sensitive and selective method to detect TC. In this study, a dual response ratiometric fluorescent probe (S,O-C 3 N 4 QDs-CitNa-Eu 3+ ) for detecting TC was constructed by mixing sodium citrate (CitNa), europium ion (Eu 3+ ) and sulfur and oxygen co-doped graphite phase carbon nitride quantum dots (S,O-C 3 N 4 QDs) solution in a specific proportion. The S,O-C 3 N 4 QDs was initially synthesized by using citric acid and thiourea as the precursors via a hydrothermal route. The blue fluorescence of S,O-C 3 N 4 QDs ( λ em = 445 nm) was decreased while the red fluorescence of Eu 3+ was increased ( λ em = 620 nm) own to the synergistic effect of internal filter effect, static quenching and antenna effect when TC was added to the mixed system containing CitNa and Eu 3+ . As a result, the ultra-sensitive detection of TC was realized from 0.25 to 120 μM with a detection limit of 1.3 nM. An obvious color change of the solution from blue to purple to red with continuous adding TC was observed such that the semi-quantitative detection of TC can be realized. Moreover, a smartphone APP monitoring platform based on test paper was constructed by using color scanning application, demonstrating that the ratiometric fluorescent probe constructed in this work has great potential in medical and environmental fields.

Abstract:Antibiotics are emerging contaminants in the environment, and their monitoring is important for food safety and human health. Herein, we synthesized a two-photon carbon quantum dots (TP-CQDs) nanoprobe using a simple and green hydrothermal approach and applied it as a chemosensor to detect chlortetracycline (CTC). CTC quenches the intrinsic fluorescence of TP-CQDs, providing a linear response within the 0.5 to 60 μM range and yielding a limit of detection of only 25 nM. Besides excellent stability and good optical properties, we found that TP-CQDs are selective to CTC as structurally similar antibiotics, along with cations, anions, and amino acids, had no significant influence on fluorescence emission. Finally, we successfully applied this sensing platform to quantify CTC in milk, fish, and eggs.

Fluorescence sensor based on optimized quantum yield manganese-carbon polymer dots and smartphone-integrated sensing platform for tetracycline detection

Abstract:The one-step synthesis of Mn-doped carbon quantum dots (Mn-CPDs) with a high quantum yield (QY = 45%) is reported using the microwave-assisted method. Subsequently, Mn-CPDs were successfully combined with Eu3+ ions to construct an Eu3+@Mn-CPDs fluorescence sensor. The presence of tetracycline (TC) induced a transition of fluorescence emission from blue (434 nm) to red (618 nm), and a robust linear relationship was observed between the ratio of F618 nm / F434 nm and the TC concentration (5 - 50 nmol/L), with a limit of detection (LOD) of 5.76 nmol/L. The underlying mechanism of Eu3+@Mn-CPDs and TC sensing is unveiled as a synergistic effect involving inner filter effect (IFE) and concurrent interactions. Notably, the smartphone-integrated sensing platform based on Eu3+@Mn-CPDs enables rapid and quantitative TC detection within a short time (< 30 s) by monitoring fluorescence color changes, achieving high-detection sensitivities (with a LOD of 6.18 nmol/L). This versatile and efficient sensing platform demonstrates its potential for the determination of TC concentrations in milk, honey, and tap water samples.

Abstract:This work synthesized the ethylenediamine-doped puffer fish skin carbon dots using biomass as a green precursor. Three tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) were detected fluorescence and colorimetrically using carbon dots as probes; on this basis, hydrogels were used to carry out visual identification and quantification. In the presence of TCs, the nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) displayed a quenching impact on fluorescence because of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), dynamic quenching, and band gap transition. As a result, it was possible to identify the precise concentrations of tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline (CTC). The assay has great biocompatibility, which was supported by cytotoxicity, a wide linear range (0.5–500 M), a low detection limit (0.15 M), and outstanding selectivity. With a high recovery rate, the approach has been successfully used to identify TCs in food and water samples such milk, honey, and tap water.

Abstract:Tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) are extensively used in clinical medicine, animal husbandry, and aquaculture because of their cost-effectiveness and high antibacterial efficacy. However, the presence of TCs residues in the environment poses risks to humans. In this study, an inner filter effect (IFE) fluorescent probe, 2,2'-(ethane-1,2-diylbis((2-((2-methylquinolin-8-yl)amino)-2-oxoethyl)azanediyl))diacetic acid (MQDA), was developed for the rapid detection of Eu3+ within 30 s. And its complex [MQDA-Eu3+] was successfully used for the detection of TCs. Upon coordination of a carboxyl of MQDA with Eu3+ to form a [MQDA-Eu3+] complex, the carboxyl served as an antenna ligand for the effective detection of Eu3+ to intensify the emission intensity of MQDA via "antenna effect", the process was the energy absorbed by TCs via UV excitation was effectively transferred to Eu3+. Fluorescence quenching of the [MQDA-Eu3+] complex was caused by the IFE in multicolor fluorescence systems. The limits of detection of [MQDA-Eu3+] for oxytetracycline, chlorotetracycline hydrochloride, and tetracycline were 0.80, 0.93, and 1.7 μM in DMSO/HEPES (7:3, v/v, pH = 7.0), respectively. [MQDA-Eu3+] demonstrated sensitive detection of TCs in environmental and food samples with satisfactory recoveries and exhibited excellent imaging capabilities for TCs in living cells and zebrafish with low cytotoxicity. The proposed approach demonstrated considerable potential for the quantitative detection of TCs.

Herein, a dual-response fluorescent probe based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and Eu3+ hybrid (N-CDs-Eu3+) was developed to selectively determine OTC and TC. The N-CDs act as ancillary ligands of Eu3+ and recognition units of OTC/TC, while the Eu3+ ions chelated with N-CDs can also specifically recognize OTC/TC. Upon inclusion of OTC/TC, an enhancement in Eu3+ emission occurs due to the energy transfer from OTC/TC to Eu3+ and the efficient elimination of quenching effect caused by H2O molecule, which is attributed to the incorporation of N-CDs; while the blue fluorescence emitted by the N-CDs decreases under the inner filter effect and static quenching effect caused by OTC/TC. Based on the double and reverse response signals, the ratiometric detection of OTC and TC in the range of 0.1-45 μΜ and 0.1-30 μΜ is achieved with a detection limit of 0.017 and 0.041 μM, respectively. In addition, the noticeable variation in fluorescence color of the probe is integrated with a smartphone-assisted analysis device for the rapid on-site quantitative assay of OTC, where the detection limit is 0.15 μΜ. The results show that this probe performs with excellent specificity and anti-interference for both OTC and TC, and satisfactory detection results are obtained in lake water, milk, and honey samples, thereby confirming that the probe exhibits promising application in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:The imbalance of Zn2+/Cd2+ in the human body can lead to many serious diseases due to the overuse of antibiotics and deposition in animal products. Developing a functional material for detecting is challenging and in demand. Herein, silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) are designed as a functional platform for the detection of tetracycline and Zn2+/Cd2+. The COOH functionalized SiQDs with the emission wavelength of 450 nm are chelated with Eu(NO3)3 to form SiQDs-Eu3+ ratio fluorescent probes, which can be used to detect tetracycline (TCs) and Zn2+/Cd2+ by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) principle sequentially. The fluorescent probe showed good linearity between ion concentration and fluorescence enhancement. The detection limit of TCs and Zn2+/Cd2+ are 0.2 × 10−6 m and 3 × 10−6 m, respectively, when the pH of the solution is 7.4. In addition, the synthesized SiQDs-Eu3+ exhibited good stability (from 94.9% to 103.1%). The relative standard deviations (RSD, n = 10) of human serum and urine were both less than 3%. Therefore, the SiQDs-Eu3+ ratio fluorescence probe will provide a good application prospect in actual sample detection.

Abstract:This paper describes a new strategy based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in which the rapid synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) is used for the determination of tetracycline (TC). Therefore, in this paper, CQDs for fluorescence determination of TC were prepared by microwave heating using chenpi as a carbon source. The prepared CQDs showed good dispersion and uniform spherical shape under transmission electron microscope (TEM), with an average particle size of about 1.91 nm. Under UV irradiation, the CQDs emitted bright blue-green fluorescence with a strong fluorescence (>1.6*10 3 a.u.), and the fluorescence intensity did not change within one week. The emission wavelength of CQDs overlapped with the absorbance of CuNPs, and therefore, CuNPs could burst the fluorescence of CQDs by FRET mechanism. And after incubation with TC, the fluorescence of CQDs was restored by the ligand reaction of CuNPs with TC. The assay showed good linearity for TC in the 1-100 nmol/L range, with a determination limit of 0.3554 nmol/L. This study demonstrated the potential of CQDs in antibiotic assays and provided a valuable method for monitoring TC levels.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) residues have a serious impact on human health, sustainable development of animal husbandry and aquaculture. Herein, a novel sensor (Cr-MOF@MIP) for TC detection was developed by modifying molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) on the surface of a luminescent metal-organic framework (MOFs). The sensor not only possesses excellent fluorescence stability and specific recognition sites, but also enables selective aggregation of the target. Subsequently, the physicochemical properties of Cr-MOF@MIP, such as morphological structure, crystal shape, surface area, pore size and functional groups, were characterized. Under the optimized conditions, the relative fluorescence intensity of the Cr-MOF@MIP fluorescent sensor decreased gradually and linearly as the TC concentration increased from 0.2 μg/mL to 50 μg/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) of TC was 0.032 μg/mL. In addition, the sensor has higher selectivity for TC compared to non-imprinted polymers (NIPs), with a bursting mechanism of Cr-MOF@MIP mainly attributed to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Remarkably, in the complex systems of milk, its specific detection of TC was demonstrated with satisfactory recoveries (90.06–104.34 %). It is expected that the development of Cr-MOF@MIP sensor will provide a new way of thinking for easy, rapid, highly selective and cost-effective analysis in complex samples.
