Abstract:The breaking of a monochromatic two-dimensional internal gravity wave is studied using a newly developed spectral/pseudospectral model. The model features vertical nonperiodic boundary conditions that ensure a realistic simulation of wave breaking during the wave propagation. Isopycnal overturning is induced at a local wave steepness of s(c) = 0.75-0.79, which is below the conventional threshold of s = 1. Isopycnal overturning is a sufficient condition for subsequent wave breaking by convective instability. When s = s(c), little primary wave energy is being transferred to high-mode harmonics. Beyond s 5 1, high-mode harmonics grow rapidly. Primary wave energy is more efficiently transferred by waves of lower frequency. A local gradient Richardson number is defined as R(i) = -(g/p(0))(dp/dz)/zeta(2) to isolate convective instability (R(i) <= 0) and wave-induced shear instability (0 < R(i) < 0.25), where dp/dz is the local vertical density gradient and zeta is the horizontal vorticity. Consistent with linear wave theory, the probability density function (PDF) for occurrence of convective instability has a maximum at wave phase phi = pi/2, where the wave-induced density perturbations to the background stratification are the greatest, whereas the wave-induced shear instability has maxima around phi = 0 (wave trough) and phi = pi (wave crest). Nonlinearities in the wave-induced flow broaden the phase span in PDFs of both instabilities. Diapyenal mixing in numerical simulations may be compared with that in realistic oceanic flows in terms of the Cox number. In the numerical simulations, the Cox numbers increase from 1.5 (s = 0.78) to 21.5 (s = 1.1), and the latter is in the lower range of reported values for the ocean.
Numerical Studies of Internal Solitary Wave Generation and Evolution by Gravity Collapse

Abstract:In this study, an analysis on the internal wave generation via the gravity collapse mechanism is carried out based on the theoretical formulation and the numerical simulation. With the linear theoretical model, a rectangle shape wave is generated and propagates back and forth in the domain, while a two-dimensional non-hydrostatic numerical model could reproduce all the observed phenomena in the laboratory experiments conducted by Chen et al. (2007), and the related process realistically. The model results further provide more quantitative information in the whole domain, thus allowing an in depth understanding of the corresponding internal solitary wave generation and propagation. It is shown that the initial type of the internal wave is determined by the relative height between the perturbation and the environmental density interface, while the final wave type is related to the relative height of the upper and lower layers of the environmental fluid. The shape of the internal wave generated is consistent with that predicted by the KdV and EKdV theories if its amplitude is small, as the amplitude becomes larger, the performance of the EKdV becomes better after the wave adjusts itself to the ambient stratification and reaches an equilibrium state between the nonlinear and dispersion effects. The evolution of the mechanical energy is also analyzed.
On Determining the Onset and Strength of Breaking for Deep Water Waves. Part I: Unforced Irrotational Wave Groups

Abstract:Finding a robust threshold variable that determines the onset of breaking for deep water waves has been an elusive problem for many decades. Recent numerical studies of the unforced evolution of two-dimensional nonlinear wave trains have highlighted the complex evolution to recurrence or breaking, together with the fundamental role played by nonlinear intrawave group dynamics. In Part I of this paper the scope of two-dimensional nonlinear wave group calculations is extended by using a wave-group- following approach applied to a wider class of initial wave group geometries, with the primary goal of identifying the differences between evolution to recurrence and to breaking onset. Part II examines the additional influences of wind forcing and background shear on these evolution processes.The present investigation focuses on the long-term evolution of the maximum of the local energy density along wave groups. It contributes a more complete picture, both long-term and short-term, of the approach to breaking and identifies a dimensionless local average growth rate parameter that is associated with the mean convergence of wave-coherent energy at the wave group maximum. This diagnostic growth rate appears to have a common threshold for all routes to breaking in deep water that have been examined and provides an earlier and more decisive indicator for the onset of breaking than previously proposed breaking thresholds. The authors suggest that this growth rate may also provide an indicative measure of the strength of wave breaking events.

Abstract:Part I of this study describes the authors' findings on a robust threshold variable that determines the onset of breaking for unforced, irrotational deep water waves and proposes a means of predicting the strength of breaking if the breaking threshold is exceeded. Those results were based on a numerical study of the unforced evolution of fully nonlinear, two-dimensional inviscid wave trains and highlight the fundamental role played by the nonlinear wave group dynamics. In Part II the scope of these calculations is extended to investigate the additional influence of wind forcing and background shear on the evolution to breaking.Using the methodology described in Part I, the present study focuses on the influence of wind forcing and vertical shear on long-term evolution toward breaking or recurrence of the maximum of the local energy density within a wave group. It investigates the behavior of a dimensionless local growth rate parameter that reflects the mean energy flux to the energy maximum in the wave group and provides a clearer physical interpretation of the evolution toward recurrence or breaking. Typically, the addition of the wind forcing and surface layer shear results in only small departures from the irrotational, unforced cases reported in Part I. This indicates that nonlinear hydrodynamic energy fluxes within wave groups still dominate the evolution to recurrence or breaking even in the presence of these other mechanisms. Further, the calculations confirm that the breaking threshold for this growth rate found for unforced irrotational wave groups in Part I is also applicable for cases with wind forcing and shear typical of open ocean conditions. Overall, this approach provides an earlier and more decisive indicator for the onset of breaking than previously proposed breaking thresholds and suggests a foundation for predicting the strength of breaking events.
Gravity-capillary Waves Modulated by Linear Shear Flow in Arbitrary Water Depth

Abstract:Considering that the fluid is inviscid and incompressible and the flow is irrotational in a fixed frame of reference and using the multiple scale analysis method, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) describing the evolution dynamics of gravity-capillary wavetrains in arbitrary constant depth. The gravity-capillary waves (GCWs) are influenced by a linear shear flow (LSF) which consists of a uniform flow and a shear flow with constant vorticity. The modulational instability (MI) of GCWs with the LSF is analyzed using the NLSE. The MI is effectively modified by the LSF. In infinite depth, there are four asymptotes which are the boundaries between MI and modulational stability (MS) in the instability diagram. In addition, the dimensionless free surface elevation as a function of time for different dimensionless water depth, surface tension, uniform flow and vorticity is exhibited. It is found that the decay of free surface elevation and the steepness of free surface amplitude change over time, which are greatly affected by the water depth, surface tension, uniform flow and vorticity.
A Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation for Gravity Waves Slowly Modulated by Linear Shear Flow*

Abstract:Assume that a fluid is inviscid, incompressible, and irrotational. A nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) describing the evolution of gravity waves in finite water depth is derived using the multiple-scale analysis method. The gravity waves are influenced by a linear shear flow, which is composed of a uniform flow and a shear flow with constant vorticity. The modulational instability (MI) of the NLSE is analyzed, and the region of the MI for gravity waves (the necessary condition for existence of freak waves) is identified. In this work, the uniform background flows along or against wave propagation are referred to as down-flow and up-flow, respectively. Uniform up-flow enhances the MI, whereas uniform down-flow reduces it. Positive vorticity enhances the MI, while negative vorticity reduces it. Hence, the influence of positive (negative) vorticity on MI can be balanced out by that of uniform down (up) flow. Furthermore, the Peregrine breather solution of the NLSE is applied to freak waves. Uniform up-flow increases the steepness of the free surface elevation, while uniform down-flow decreases it. Positive vorticity increases the steepness of the free surface elevation, whereas negative vorticity decreases it.
Instability cascade of strongly nonlinear gravity waves in a vertically sheared atmosphere

Abstract:Although internal gravity waves are generally recognized as an important mechanism to distribute energy through the atmosphere, their dynamics near the instability is only partially understood to date. Many types of instabilities, notably the classical modulational instability, a novel point spectrum modulational instability, the triadic resonant instability, the shear instability and the static instability have been studied mostly in idealized settings and mostly isolated from one another. Here, we identify the instability cascade of a quasi one-dimensional and stationary internal gravity wave modulated by a vertically sheared mean flow. We find indicators of various interdependent instability mechanisms which partly compete for dominance and partly follow one another. A key finding is that the particular dynamics of the local cascade depends on the sign of the background shear.

Abstract:Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate an internal solitary wave breaking over a submerged Gaussian ridge. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was performed with a high-speed camera to analyze the macro- and microstructures of wave-breaking evolution and subsequent induced turbulence and mixing. Four types of wave breaking, namely, plunging breaking, collapsing breaking, plunging-collapsing breaking, and surging breaking, were identified, along with their different evolutionary processes and breaking mechanisms. The turbulent dissipation rates estimated from the PIV results were on the order of 10(-6) to 10(-4) m(2)/s(3) during the breaking, with the smallest values in the plunging breaking and the largest in surging breaking. Generally, the intensity of turbulence in plunging breakers seems to be insensitive to the changing wave slope; however, the surging breaker shows an opposite trend.

Abstract:Solitary waves propagating horizontally in a stratified fluid are investigated. The fluid has a shallow layer with linear stratification and a deep layer with constant density. The investigation is both experimental and theoretical. Detailed measurements of the velocities induced by the waves are facilitated by particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). Particular attention is paid to the role of wave breaking which is observed in the experiments. Incipient breaking is found to take place for moderately large waves in the form of the generation of vortices in the leading part of the waves. The maximal induced fluid velocity close to the free surface is then about 80% of the wave speed, and the wave amplitude is about half of the depth of the stratified layer. Wave amplitude is defined as the maximal excursion of the stratified layer. The breaking increases in power with increasing wave amplitude. The magnitude of the induced fluid velocity in the large waves is found to be approximately bounded by the wave speed. The breaking introduces a broadening of the waves. In the experiments a maximal amplitude and speed of the waves are obtained. A theoretical fully nonlinear two-layer model is developed in parallel with the experiments. In this model the fluid motion is assumed to be steady in a frame of reference moving with the wave. The Brunt-Väisälä frequency is constant in the layer with linear stratification and zero in the other. A mathematical solution is obtained by means of integral equations. Experiments and theory show good agreement up to breaking. An approximately linear relationship between the wave speed and amplitude is found both in the theory and the experiments and also when wave breaking is observed in the latter. The upper bound of the fluid velocity and the broadening of the waves, observed in the experiments, are not predicted by the theory, however. There was always found to be excursion of the solitary waves into the layer with constant density, irrespective of the ratio between the depths of the layers.

Abstract:The breaking properties of internal solitary waves (ISWs) flowing over a bottom step were investigated experimentally. The experiments were performed in a two-layer immiscible system to avoid the influence of diffusion and mixing. The flat bottom condition and the bottom step condition had been conducted respectively. The characteristics of incident ISWs, the process of breaking and the subsequent developments were taken into discussion. A modified internal Iribarren number was introduced, and the critical condition of breaking was considered to be related to its trend change point. The initial stage of the breaking process was found can be divided into spatially discrete characteristic structures other than messy flowing of the full interface. And the characteristic structures have close horizontal lengths for different amplitudes. The horizontal velocity gradient was identified as the key parameter of shear instability. By analyzing the subsequent developments, the completely broken ISWs were found can reform a quasi ISWs propagating upon the bottom step which has a smooth front-face and an ever-breaking back-face. Due to the breaking of the back-face, the amplitude of reformed ISWs continues to decrease. Meanwhile, the attenuation rate was noticed to be related to the incident amplitude, but not be related to whether it is broken or the degree of breaking.

Abstract:Oscillatory tides flowing over rough topography on the ocean floor generate internal gravity waves, which are a major source of ocean mixing. Linear inviscid theory can describe waves generated by gentle topography with slopes that are less steep than the propagation angle of the internal waves; such topography is termed subcritical. However, a clear physical picture of internal waves generated by topography with slopes steeper than the angle of internal waves (supercritical topography) is lacking. In this paper we present an experimental study at Reynolds number similar to O(100) of internal gravity waves generated by a circular cylinder that oscillates horizontally (at a frequency Omega), thus mimicking barotropic tidal flow over bottom topography. Fundamental waves of frequency Omega emanate from locations on the cylinder where the topographic slope equals the slope of internal waves. For small oscillating amplitude A (weak forcing), our experimental results compare well with predictions of the viscous linear theory of D. G. Hurley and G. Keady [J. Fluid Mech. 351, 119 (1997)]. The width of the wave beams is determined by competition between forcing and viscous smoothing, and hydrodynamic screening of the steep part of the topography extends the cylinder's horizontal length scale. Beyond the weak forcing regime, harmonic waves of frequency n Omega (with integer n > 1 and n Omega < N, where N is the buoyancy frequency) are generated mainly by nonlinear interaction involving the overlapping fundamental waves. For moderate forcing we find that the intensity of the fundamental and second harmonic waves scales linearly and quadratically with A, respectively. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The development of internal waves breaking in recently twenty years is reviewed from theories,observation results,numerical experiments and laboratory experiments aspects.Numerical and laboratory experiments indicate that initial instability leading to internal wave breaking is almost two dimensional.When the cross section convective rolls are formed,the energy begins to dissipate massively and ultimately three-dimensional-instability is dominated.During the process of the initial instability to the formation of the convective rolls,the intermediate process may be a shear instability,a convective instability or a combination of both,which depends on the stratification,background shear flows,topography features and characterics of internal wave.It’s validated by in situ data that the internal solitary wave breaking was caused by shear instability.The numerical simulation also illustrates the importance of convective instability.Existing internal wave breaking criterion mostly involves internal solitary waves.Theoretical analyses focus on linear and weakly nonlinear internal waves breaking mechanism and criterion.
Interplay of edge fracture and shear banding in complex fluids

Abstract:We explore theoretically the interplay between shear banding and edge fracture in complex fluids by performing a detailed simulation study within two constitutive models: the Johnson–Segalman model and the Giesekus model. We consider separately parameter regimes in which the underlying constitutive curve is monotonic and nonmonotonic, such that the bulk flow (in the absence of any edge effects) is, respectively, homogeneous and shear banded. Phase diagrams of the levels of edge disturbance and of bulk (or quasibulk) shear banding are mapped as a function of the surface tension of the fluid–air interface, the wetting angle where this interface meets the walls of the flow cell, and the imposed shear rate. In particular, we explore in more detail the basic result recently announced by Hemingway and Fielding [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 138002 (2018)]: that precursors to edge fracture can induce quasibulk shear banding. We also appraise analytical predictions that shear banding can induce edge fracture [S. Skorski and P. D. Olmsted, J. Rheol., 55, 1219 (2011)]. Although a study of remarkable early insight, Skorski and Olmsted [J. Rheol., 55, 1219 (2011)] made some strong assumptions about the nature of the "base state," which we examine using direct numerical simulation. The basic prediction that shear banding can cause edge fracture remains valid but with qualitatively modified phase boundaries.

Tidal Flow over Three‐dimensional Topography Generates Out‐of‐forcing‐plane Harmonics

Abstract:We conduct laboratory experiments and direct numerical simulations on internal gravity waves generated by tidal flow over a model three‐dimensional Gaussian mountain on the sea floor. When 2ω < N (where ω is the tidal frequency and N is the buoyancy frequency), the flow generates second harmonic internal waves that propagate perpendicular to the tidal forcing direction. These unexpected harmonics are observed only when the maximum slope of the bottom topography is greater than the slope of internal wave propagation. The out‐of‐plane harmonics saturate at a higher tidal forcing amplitude than the normal in‐tidal‐forcing‐plane harmonics, and could lead to increased wave breaking and mixing near rough topography in the ocean.
Edge fracture in complex fluids

Abstract:We study theoretically the edge fracture instability in sheared complex fluids, by means of linear stability analysis and direct nonlinear simulations. We derive an exact analytical expression for the onset of edge fracture in terms of the shear-rate derivative of the fluid's second normal stress difference, the shear-rate derivative of the shear stress, the jump in shear stress across the interface between the fluid and the outside medium (usually air), the surface tension of that interface, and the rheometer gap size. We provide a full mechanistic understanding of the edge fracture instability, carefully validated against our simulations. These findings, which are robust with respect to choice of rheological constitutive model, also suggest a possible route to mitigating edge fracture, potentially allowing experimentalists to achieve and accurately measure stronger flows than hitherto.

Abstract:Although a ubiquitous natural phenomenon, the onset and subsequent process of surface wave breaking are not fully understood. Breaking affects how steep waves become and drives air–sea exchanges 1 . Most seminal and state-of-the-art research on breaking is underpinned by the assumption of two-dimensionality, although ocean waves are three dimensional. We present experimental results that assess how three-dimensionality affects breaking, without putting limits on the direction of travel of the waves. We show that the breaking-onset steepness of the most directionally spread case is double that of its unidirectional counterpart. We identify three breaking regimes. As directional spreading increases, horizontally overturning 'travelling-wave breaking' (I), which forms the basis of two-dimensional breaking, is replaced by vertically jetting 'standing-wave breaking' (II). In between, 'travelling-standing-wave breaking' (III) is characterized by the formation of vertical jets along a fast-moving crest. The mechanisms in each regime determine how breaking limits steepness and affects subsequent air–sea exchanges. Unlike in two dimensions, three-dimensional wave-breaking onset does not limit how steep waves may become, and we produce directionally spread waves 80% steeper than at breaking onset and four times steeper than equivalent two-dimensional waves at their breaking onset. Our observations challenge the validity of state-of-the-art methods used to calculate energy dissipation and to design offshore structures in highly directionally spread seas.

Resonant Generation of Internal Waves on A Model Continental Slope

Abstract:We study internal wave generation in a laboratory model of oscillating tidal flow on a continental margin. Waves are found to be generated only in a near-critical region where the slope of the bottom topography matches that of internal waves. Fluid motion with a velocity an order of magnitude larger than that of the forcing occurs within a thin boundary layer above the bottom surface. The resonant wave is unstable because of strong shear; Kelvin-Helmholtz billows precede wave breaking. This work provides a new explanation for the intense boundary flows on continental slopes.

Numerical Simulations and an Updated Parameterization of the Breaking Internal Solitary Wave over the Continental Shelf

Abstract:The breaking of internal solitary waves (ISWs) over slope-shelf topography induces energy dissipation and enhances mixing. In this work, high-resolution, laboratory-scale simulations are employed to investigate the instability mechanisms and dissipation of ISWs. We find that the increasing nonhydrostatic pressure during deformation contributes to an adverse pressure gradient, which induces plunging flow for overturning. Shear instability and convective instabilities trigger wave breaking. Wave-induced vortexes induce strong shearing and enhance the dissipation of energy by 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than that which occurs under stable conditions. Furthermore, based on laboratory results, we evaluate two commonly used parameterizations (Pacanowski & Philander, 1981, https://doi.org/10.1175/1520-0485(1981)011<1443:povm in>2.0.co;2, i.e., PP81; Klymak & Legg, 2010, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ocemod.2010.02.005, i.e., KL10) in coarser-resolution global ocean models by modifying the horizontal resolution from 100 grids every wavelength to approximately 30. The results show that PP81 and KL10 can both improve the estimation of the energy loss, but can only depict strong shear within the pycnocline and bottom boundary regions, respectively. Finally, an updated parameterization is presented that can effectively describe the strong shear in two regions during wave breaking. The flow field and dissipation are more consistent with the laboratory results using the new parameterization. This study improves the understanding of the mixing parameterizations in simulating the continuous processes of strong internal wave breaking.

Abstract:Special features of surface gravity waves in deep fluid flow with constant vertical shear of velocity is studied. It is found that the mean flow velocity shear leads to non-trivial modification of surface gravity wave modes dispersive characteristics. Moreover, the shear induces generation of surface gravity waves by internal vortex mode perturbations. The performed analytical and numerical study provides, that surface gravity waves are effectively generated by the internal perturbations at high shear rates. The generation is different for the waves propagating in the different directions. Generation of surface gravity waves propagating along the main flow considerably exceeds the generation of surface gravity waves in the opposite direction for relatively small shear rates, whereas the later wave is generated more effectively for the high shear rates. From the mathematical point of view the wave generation is caused by non self-adjointness of the linear operators that describe the shear flow.
