Abstract:With the advent of globalization, more and more cultural elements of oriental countries have been discovered by Hollywood and become the basis and material for its film creation. However, ever since Hollywood first introduced the concepts of “Chineseness” and “otherness” in films, the western understanding of oriental cultural prejudice, namely Orientalism, has existed and gradually penetrated into the production of films, such as the film Kung Fu Panda with Chinese characteristics. Different people have different opinions about the Chinese culture reflected in the film. Based on the theory of Orientalism put forward by Said, this paper discusses the embodiment of Orientalism in Hollywood animated films and takes Kung Fu Panda as an example to analyze how to use oriental elements to convey western ideas and shape American heroes. Through the analysis, readers will have a deeper understanding of cross-cultural communication and Orientalism in Hollywood films. These films full of Chinese elements seem to express the essence of Chinese culture, but in fact it is just a commercial film full of eastern and foreign imagination, strongly permeating western ideas.
