Abstract:The reaction thermodynamics of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis from CH3OH and CO2 was investigated by estimating ΔrH and ΔrG of the reaction at different temperatures and pressure. The result shows that the reaction does not spontaneously occur under finite conditions in view of thermodynamics. Thus, in order to seek a new method or a novel idea for the DMC synthesis, the thermodynamics of DMC synthesis catalyzed by basic catalysts, K2CO3, KOH and CH3OK, was discussed in details. A general conclusion was obtained that the subroutine nesting of a coupling reaction is an effective avenue to increase the yield of DMC synthesis from CO2 and CH3OH.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide using potassium methoxide as a catalyst in the presence of CH3I was investigated. The results showed that CH3OK is an effective catalyst; the raised yield (16.2%) and high selectivity (100%) of DMC formation under mild conditions were achieved. The effect of the reaction conditions, such as reaction temperature, pressure of carbon dioxide, the molar ratio of potassium methoxide to methanol and the amount of methyl iodide, on the reaction is discussed. The roles of the potassium methoxide and methyl iodide were explored, that is, the former acts as a catalyst, and the latter does as a promoter to the formation of DMC from CH3OH and CO2. In addition, the reaction mechanism was proposed according to the results obtained in the catalytic reaction.

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids such as dialkyl (or alkyl) di-(tri-) hydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide, tetrahydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide and allcylhydroxyethyl or dihydroxyethyl immidazolium hydroxide were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and H-1 NMR. These ionic liquids containing hydroxyls were used as catalysts for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The results showed that benzylmethyldihydroxyethyl ammonium hydroxide (BzMDH) is an effect catalyst with raised catalytic activity and high selectivity to DMC. Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol and carbon dioxide is challenging due to the thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness of CO2. Electrochemical technique can overcome this challenge by providing a method for preliminary activation of CO2. Electrocatalytic activation and conversion of carbon dioxide to dimethyl carbonate with platinum electrodes in a dialkylimidazolium ionic liquids–basic compounds–methanol system was conducted under ambient conditions. Among the basic compounds and ionic liquids, CH3OK acts as a co-catalyst and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (bmimBr) acts as an electrolyte. In the bmimBr–CH3OK–methanol system, the absence of CH3I and/or any other organic additives allows dimethyl carbonate to be effectively synthesized. The reaction mechanism proposed here is different from those previously reported.

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquids were synthesized and used as catalysts and reaction medium for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide (CH) is an effective catalyst with high selectivity (95.2%) to DMC under mild conditions as compared with other similar ionic liquids. The ionic liquid can be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the relationship between the catalytic reactivity and OH-functional group was discussed and the mechanism of this synthetic reaction was proposed according to the experimental results and previously reported literatures.

Abstract:The application of heterogeneous catalysts in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis from methanol is hindered by low activation efficiency of methanol to methoxy intermediates (CH3O*), which is the key intermediate for DMC generation. Herein, a catalyst of alkali metal K anchored on the CuO/ZnO oxide is rationally designed for offering Lewis acid–base pairs as dual active centers to improve the activation efficiency of methanol. Characterizations of CO2‐TPD, NH3‐TPD, XPS, and DRIFTS revealed that the addition of Lewis base K observably boosted the dissociation of methanol and combined with Lewis acid CuO/ZnO oxide to adsorb the formed CH3O* stably, thus synergistically promoted the transesterification. Finally, the CuO/ZnO‐9%K2O catalyst exhibited the optimal catalytic activity, achieving a high yield of 74.4% with an excellent selectivity of 98.9% for DMC at a low temperature of 90°C. The strategy of constructing Lewis acid–base pairs provides a reference for the design of heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Current dimethyl carbonate(DMC) synthesis catalysts via liquid-phase oxidative carbonylation of methanol include three catalytic systems:supported copper catalysts,cobalt complex catalysts and Cu-Pd systems,among which supported CuCl catalysts has been commercialized.Problems with CuCl catalysts include deterioration of the activity due to loss of Cl~-and consequent corrosion of downstream equipment,which are usually solved by stabilization of Cl~-via introducing ligands or promoters.Replacing Cl~-by other anions is a trend in this field and has promising prospect for commercial(application).

Abstract:Gas-phase indirect oxidative carbonylation of methanol to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has been industrialized, but the reaction mechanism is still ambiguous. In this work, the reaction mechanism of DMC synthesis using a NaY zeolite catalyst doped with 1.0 wt% Pd was revealed by combining in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) results with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Two key reaction intermediates CO* (*, a surface site) and COOCH3* were identified through the adsorption of a probe molecule of methyl chloroformate (CH3OCOCl), and characterized by steady-state, dynamic-pulse and time-resolved transient DRIFTS experiments. The CO* intermediate is predominant on the catalyst surface when the reaction reached steady-state. The DFT results also showed that the inclusion of OCH3* into CO* had the highest energy barrier of 150.1 kJ mol−1. This verified that the formation of COOCH3* is the rate-determining step for the DMC synthesis. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism including the fast formation of CO*, and rate-determining insertion of OCH3* into CO* toward generation of COOCH3* to yield DMC was proposed.

Abstract:A basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide, was prepared and supported on MgO to form Choline hydroxide/MgO material. The supported ionic liquid material was characterized by XRD, FT–IR and TG and used as a catalyst in one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from propylene oxide, methanol and carbon dioxide. A good catalytic performance was obtained with 98% conversion of epoxide and selectivity of above 90% to DMC + PC over the composite catalyst. However, the catalyst could be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity.

Abstract:Iron and vanadate modified phosphotungstate was fabricated by Fe salt and vanadate incorporating into H3PW12O40. Its morphology, composition and structure were determined by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR and XPS. The catalytic performance of the prepared composite for selective oxidation of methanol to dimethoxymethane using molecular oxygen as oxidant was evaluated. A detail study on influence of key reaction parameters, involving the calcination temperature of the catalyst during the preparation, reaction time, temperature and pressure, and flow rate of O-2, methanol and N-2 on the reactivity and selectivity was optimized. The results showed that the composite was active and highly selective for methanol oxidation, giving ca. 70% conversion of methanol and > 96% selectivity to DMM. The adsorption behaviour of methanol on surface of the catalyst or various components composed of the catalyst was investigated by in situ DRIFTS technique to identify the active sites and further considering reaction mechanism. Moreover, the operating lifetime and stability of the catalyst was also discussed.

Abstract:The adsorption and activation of both CO2 and methanol are mainly affected by the distance of the Lewis acid site, Zr4+, and Lewis base, Zr4+/O2−, of the Zr-based catalysts. In this paper, Zr-incorporated SBA-15 (Zr-SBA-15) and Zr-grafted SBA-15 (Zr/SBA-15) catalysts were prepared with different Zr environments, and were analyzed with N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectra, and XPS. It was proposed that Zr-SBA-15 catalyst with Si-O-Zr-OH and Zr-O-Si-OH structure exhibited non-adjacent sites between Zr4+ and Zr4+/O2−, while Zr/SBA-15 catalyst with Zr-O-Zr-OH structure showed neighboring sites between Zr4+ and Zr4+/O2−. Furthermore, the Zr/SBA-15 catalyst exhibited good catalytic activity, while no DMC was detected over the Zr-SBA-15 catalyst at the same reaction conditions. For combined in situ infrared and catalytic performance, it was indicated that the methanol and CO2 could be activated to form DMC, only when the Zr4+ and Zr4+/O2− sites existed and were adjacent to each other in the Zr-O-Zr-OH of Zr/SBA-15 catalyst.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic activation and conversion of methanol and CO2 to dimethyl carbonate with graphite and platinum electrodes in the dialkylimidazolium ionic liquid-methanol system was conducted under ambient conditions. Among the ionic liquids screened, 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BzmimCl) exhibited effective performance as a supporting electrolyte. In the process of the electrolysis, dimethyl carbonate was effectively synthesized in the absence of any other additives. Based on the electrochemical activation of the methanol on the electrode, insertion of CO2, CH3OH participating in the reaction, the electrochemical reaction mechanism proposed here is very different from those previously reported. Abstract:Direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and CH3OH holds significant economic and environmental value. Numerous catalysts have been employed for this reaction, yet further enhancement of its activity requires a deeper understanding of the catalyst's structure-activity relationship and catalytic mechanism. In this study, we utilized structurally well-defined and highly tunable MOF-808 as a research platform. Functionalizing MOF-808 with ethylenediamine (MOF-808-ED) boosted the space time yield of DMC from 3.25 mmol·g-1·h-1 to 7.23 mmol·g-1·h-1. Experimental results demonstrate that the reaction involves acid-base synergistic catalysis, where an appropriate balance of acid-base sites content is crucial for CO2 and CH3OH to produce DMC, as it facilitates the formation of the key intermediates (CH3OCOO*). Additionally, the nucleophilicity of N is stronger than that of O, further promoting the catalyst's enrichment and activation of CO2. Finally, employing in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) testing, we elucidated the mechanism by which the MOF-808-ED catalyst, with -NH2 as base sites and Zr as acid sites, facilitates the synergistic catalysis of the reaction. This study provides insights into the synergistic effects of acid-base sites on the synthesis of DMC from CO2 and methanol, offering valuable guidance for the development of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:ZnO/ZrO 2 solid solution was introduced as the catalyst for synthesizing dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from propylene carbonate (PC) and methanol. Homogeneous catalysts with strong alkaline nature are the current main catalysts for this reaction. Therefore, to supplant the former with a more applicable multiphase one, it is necessary to construct stable and efficient alkaline active centers on the surface of solid catalysts. The ZnO/ZrO 2 solid solution created defective structures of coordinative unsaturation in the form of oxygen vacancies (O V ) by substituting Zn atoms for Zr atoms in ZrO 2 crystals. Characterizations showed that electrons were transferred to the surrounding Zn atoms upon the formation of these O V , leading to a local enrichment of electrons and the formation of basic active centers. The number of oxygen defects and the alkalinity were effectively regulated by changing the ratio of the two metal atoms in the solid solution. Experiments demonstrated that the catalyst had the best DMC selectivity (92.2%) and the highest DMC yield (57.2%) at a 1:1 ratio of Zn to Zr, at 160 °C and 4 h. This superior performance not only establishes the feasibility of solid solution catalysts in synthesizing DMC but also provides a new perspective on the essential understanding of the active centers of such catalysts.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO 2 and methanol is a potential green alternative to the current industrial methods using toxic chemicals. Although many CeO 2 -based catalysts have been explored, the key structural factor affecting their DMC activity is still unclear. Herein, single-crystalline CeO 2 catalysts bearing distinct but well-defined Ce coordination structures were examined. We found that methanol is the key species being activated by surface Ce sites (cf. CO 2 ) to produce methyl carbonate (MC) and later DMC. The reactivity of surface methoxy species towards CO 2 varies considerably with its configuration determined by Ce coordination structures. The head-to-head terminal methoxy species converts CO 2 to MC faster than its atilt counterparts, resulting in a higher DMC activity. The bridging methoxy species is, however, too stable to react with CO 2 . The established structure-activity relation here should also guide the design of CeO 2 -based catalysts in other reactions involving methanol activation.

Abstract:AbstractBACKGROUND: Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) can be used effectively as an environmentally benign substitute for highly toxic phosgene and dimethyl sulfate in carbonylation and methylation, as well as a promising octane booster owing to its high oxygen content. Two‐step transesterification from epoxide, methanol, and CO2 is widely used in the bulk production of DMC. However, major disadvantages of this process are high energy consumption, and high investment and production costs. A one pot synthesis of DMC from carbon dioxide, methanol, and epoxide was, therefore, developed. But the yields of DMC are below 70% due to the thermodynamic limitation.RESULTS: Electrochemical synthesis of DMC was conducted with platinum electrodes from methanol, CO2 and propylene oxide in an ionic liquid was conducted. The bmimBr (1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bromide)‐methanol‐propylene oxide system with CO2 bubbling allows DMC to be effectively synthesized and a high yield (75.5%) was achieved.CONCLUSION: In this electrolysis, redox reactions of substrates, CO2, methanol, and propylene oxide, on Pt electrodes were carried out, producing the activated particles, CH3O−, CH3OH+, CO2− and PO−, resulting in the effective synthesis of DMC with a 75.5% yield in an ionic liquid (bmimBr). Finally, a mechanism for this synthesis reaction was proposed, which is very different from those reported in the literature. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:The reaction of methanol with CO2 to obtain dimethoxymethane (DMM) at 150 degrees C and initial pressure of 3.0 MPa CO2 was realized in the presence of basic functionalized ionic liquid BmimOH. Although the conversion of methanol was low (2.4%), CO2 as a soft oxidant was firstly introduced for selective oxidation of methanol into DMM. The effect of the functionalized group composed of ionic liquids on the reactivity and selectivity was explored and the activation and reaction mechanism of the ionic liquid for methanol and CO2 was proposed. In addition, the reaction thermodynamics of methanol and CO2 was discussed by calculating the thermodynamic functions of the reaction in order to explore the direction and limitation of the reaction. Abstract:The production of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO and methyl nitrite (MN) is of great industrial interest for chemicals upgrading. As one of the most efficient catalysts, PdCl 2 based catalyst has been widely investigated and been verified to be highly selective toward DMC yielding. However, the underlying mechanism is unclear so far. Herein, we identified the active sites and corresponding reaction pathway on PdCl 2 (140) surface by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, combining with X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) measurements. The dissociation of MN resulted in the construction of Cl vacancies on PdCl 2 (140) surface, which are the specific sites for DMC formation. On the other hand, the continuous loss of Cl induced the reduction of PdCl 2 to Pd, leading to changed pathway of reaction and decreased yield of DMC. These insights highlighted the importance of Cl-balance in PdCl 2 based catalyst system, which determined the final products of CO oxidative esterification.

Abstract:The synthesis of 1-methoxy-2-propanol from propylene oxide and methanol was investigated with a series of ZnMgAl catalysts derived from hydrotalcite-like compounds. The mixed oxides were characterized using XRD, TG-DTG, N-2 adsorption analysis. NH3-TPD and CO2-TPD methods were used to measure the acid-base properties of the catalysts. Under the optimal reaction condition (the amount of the catalysts, 1.8%; methanol/propylene oxide molar ratio, 5: 1; temperature, 393 K; and time, 3 h), ZnMgAl-2 led to the highest propylene oxide conversion of 95.9% and 1-methoxy-2-propanol selectivity of 90.9%. The high catalytic activity and selectivity of ZnMgAl-2 were attributed to the presence of a high density of acidic sites and a medium basic sites. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
