Abstract:Journal of Travel Research, Ahead of Print. Economic globalization, the primary mechanism of globalization, has driven the flourishing of international tourism. However, little research has empirically revealed how it affects international tourism from a structural perspective. Based on network theory, this study applies network analysis and fixed-effects panel data estimation techniques to examine the impact of economic globalization on the structure of international tourism and the moderating role of uncertainty avoidance as an inertia factor in this relationship. The statistics are derived from panel data for 47 countries from 1995 to 2018. The empirical results indicate that there is a positive relationship between economic globalization and countries' network prominence in both outbound and inbound tourism, and the effects vary under different degrees of uncertainty avoidance. This study offers insights and practical implications for policymakers, tourism marketers, and transnational tourism corporations to formulate tourism recovery strategies against the de-globalization caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:Increased uses of fossil fuel consumption, globalization, and tourism activities have significant adverse effects on the sustainability of our ecosystem. The present study takes into account the top 10 most visited nations by tourists to examine the impact of fossil fuel energy consumption, technological innovation, foreign direct investment (FDI), economic growth, and globalization on tourism inflows from 2008 to 2022.. Choice of appropriate technique for empirical testing is based on the PP-Fisher, ADF Fisher, IPS, and LLC unit root tests. Due to mixed order of integration of variables, the Panel ARDL is more reliable for econometric investigation. The findings of Panel ARDL reveal that the most significant contributing factors towards growth in tourism are technological innovation, the globalization index, growth in gross domestic product, and use of fossil fuels as an energy source. These results imply that advancements in technology, increased globalization trends, and economic growth are facilitating the growth in tourism activities. Likewise, non-renewable energy consumption is significantly linked to tourism growth in these countries which exhibits that these governments are relying upon fossil fuel consumption to meet the energy demand for tourism activities and to fuel economic growth. Though, FDI is having a detrimental effect on tourism inflows in the top 10 most frequently visited nations. This outcome entails that expanded industrialization and economic footprint negatively influence the ecological environment which adversely affects tourism inflows. The policy implications of this research assert that the development of clean and renewable energy technologies is essential for the promotion of sustainable economic growth, promote eco-tourism in these countries. Similarly, smart manufacturing and environment friendly production can alleviate the negative effects of ecological footprint on tourism inflows.

Abstract:Journal of Travel Research, Ahead of Print. Tourism and globalization are considered as drivers of economic growth since they boost income, job opportunities, infrastructural development, international trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, and technological diffusion. However, the economic benefits of tourism and globalization could occur at the expense of increased energy consumption (from fossil fuels) and other pollution-intensive activities that worsen environmental degradation, especially in countries with lax institutions and environmental standards. The roles of tourism, globalization, and their interaction term on environmental degradation have not been thoroughly investigated. Hence, this study analyzes the moderating role of globalization on the impact of tourism on environmental degradation (carbon emissions and ecological footprint) in 31 African countries using different dimensions of tourism and globalization. It uncovers the marginal effect of tourism on environmental degradation at different levels of globalization. It utilizes strategies that account for cointegration, dynamism, endogeneity, heterogeneity, cross sectional dependency, and causality. Evidence from this study shows that globalization and its dimensions play favorable moderating roles on the impact of tourism on carbon emissions. The marginal effect of tourism on carbon emissions decreases as globalization increases, suggesting that a simultaneous increase in tourism and globalization can mitigate carbon emissions. However, no evidence to show that globalization can mitigate the environmental impact of tourism on ecological footprint. The findings differ probably because carbon emissions and ecological footprint measure different aspects of environmental degradation. This analysis emphasizes the need for countries to consider the interaction between tourism and globalization in their quest to ensure environmental sustainability.JEL Classification: F64, Q53, Z32

Abstract:Purpose: The study sought to analyze the impacts of foreign direct investments on the hospitality sectors in Ethiopia. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library. Findings: The results show that showed that the success of the hospitality industry in developing countries depends on the levels of foreign direct investment. Although many developing countries have natural features such as beaches, rivers, and other natural resources, local capital to invest in those resources is unavailable. The tourism industry is one of the largest and fastest-growing sectors in the global economy and a key driver of socio-economic development, as it is labor-intensive and stimulates SME growth and investment. It has been used in other countries as an economic driver for growth which can widely support poverty reduction. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practices and Policies: The capital market theory, investment development path theory and the eclectic theory may be used to anchor future studies in the tourism sector. The study results will also benefit other stakeholders such as the policy makers as well as researchers and scholars from different parts of the world. The top management of hospitality management companies in the country will also use the study findings to improve tourism performance in all their activities and programs. The study recommends that the adoption of effective social protection development policies in the tourism sector will help to improve efficiency in their major operations and activities.

Abstract:AbstractSeveral studies have investigated the relationship between tourism, consumption of energy, globalization, and ecological footprint. However, the role of biocapacity alongside tourism development in environmental sustainability is yet to be documented in the extant literature. No doubt, the biocapacity of a country, its level of tourist’s arrival, as well as globalization all contribute immensely to ecological footprint. Consequently, this study looks at long-run and causality connections with a special focus on bio-capacity. The study uses the pooled mean group-autoregressive distributed lag model (PMG-ARDL) methodology to test the causality relationship during 2016 international tourists’ receipt from world tourism organization data files for 10 tourism destinations. Empirical result based on the panel PMG-ARDL confirms the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis for the 10 tourism destinations countries investigated. Furthermore, the panel ARDL estimator was used to estimate the short-run and long-run relationships simultaneously between biocapacity, tourist arrivals, GDP per capita, globalization, and ecological footprints. While the Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test was used to establish causality relationships among the highlighted variables. The trade-off between economic growth and environmental quality suggests that tourist arrival dampens environmental quality. In addition, the study finds that growing biocapacity affects ecological footprints negatively. Furthermore, an increase in tourism-related activities, globalization, and economic production has the potential to damage the quality of the environment. To this end, given the study results, there is a need to pursue green tourism which can reduce environmental degradation and destruction of land caused by multiple tourism-related transportation and construction of tourist facilities respectively in the top ten tourist destination countries.

Abstract:Natural beauty and cultural institutions are perennial factors for tourism development with a competitive advantage in Nepal. However, the country has not been able to capitalize on those natural and cultural resources for the benefit of the people at a large scale. Without in-depth research on the prospect of the tourism industry and its application, Nepal has been lagging behind many of the countries of the world even in the twenty-first century. Nevertheless, existing scholarship on the relation between ‘FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) inflows’ and ‘tourism development’, has remained incomplete. Therefore, this study has set the specific objectives of finding and analyzing the causal relationship between these two variables using the time series data of Nepal from 1995 to 2019. It has followed the causal-comparative research design to meet the objectives asserting the dependent variable: ‘net FDI inflow’ and independent variable: ‘tourism development’, first. Then, the discourse has forwarded interchanging the dependent into independent and independent into dependent one. This analysis finds a bi-directional relationship between FDI inflow and tourism development in the short run. The arrival of one international tourist causes a 68 USD increase in ‘net FDI inflows’ and an increase in one USD from him increases a 0.17 USD in FDI. Similarly, a one USD increase in net FDI inflows causes a 0.76 USD increase in income from international tourism. However, it has asserted no long-run relationship between these variables. Importantly, these findings help the government and policymakers formulate and implement the right policies and programs for the sustainable tourism development of Nepal.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to analyze tourism development's (TOD) role in demoting income inequality in South Asia from 1996 to 2020. To this end, this study explored the connection between TOD, tourism investment, economic growth (GDP), trade globalization (TGL) and income inequality. Design/methodology/approach This study used various techniques, including cross-sectional dependence, unit root, cointegration techniques, long-term elasticity estimators and short-term causality between the study variables. This study adopted Driscoll–Kraay standard errors and Dumitrescu Hurlin panel causality estimations. Findings This study's results reveal that tourism has an inverted U-shaped association with income inequality in the long run, which supports the Kuznets Curve hypothesis. In contrast, capital investment in tourism (CIT) has a significant negative association with income inequality. At the same time, growth and TGL positively and significantly affect income inequality. Moreover, TOD has a bidirectional feedback causality of income inequality. These results also support tourism's "price effect" on income inequality. Hence, this study provides more practical implications regarding policymaking in tourism and income inequality in developing economies to target Agenda 2030. Originality/value This study is unique by considering the cross-sectional dependence in estimating the model that has been ignored in previous studies and provides new insights into the existing literature by investigating how TOD and CIT contribute to income inequality concentrating on the understudied South Asian economies from 1996 to 2020. As a result, this study has more practical implications for policymaking in the tourism industry and income inequality in emerging economies.

Abstract:The influence of tourism development and economic policy uncertainties on environmental sustainability is substantial. Promoting responsible tourism and using sustainable tourism practises, like offering eco-friendly lodging, is a key part of protecting natural habitats and lowering carbon footprints. Hence, this study tries to examine the relationship between tourism development, economic policy uncertainty, renewable energy, and natural resources on the ecological footprint of India during 1990ŌĆō2022. This study applies a novel dynamic ARDL simulation approach for long-run and short-run analyses. The study also employs frequency-domain causality to check the causal relationship between the variables. The result reveals that tourism has a positive effect on the ecological footprint. Similarly, economic policy uncertainty has a positive and significant effect on the ecological footprint in India during the sample period. Additionally, natural resource rent shows a positive effect on the ecological footprint or deteriorating environmental quality in the short and long run in the sample period. However, renewable energy consumption indicates a negative effect on the ecological footprint. The results reveal that TDI and EPU have rejected the null hypothesis of no Granger cause in the long, medium, and short term. While renewable energy has a causal relationship with ecological footprints in both the long run and medium run, it is imperative for India to adopt measures that facilitate the advancement of sustainable tourism, with a particular focus on promoting environmentally friendly lodging options, enhancing public transportation systems, and implementing effective waste management strategies.

Abstract:This study explores the relationship between economic growth, tourism, and the environment in South Asian economies. It finds that factors such as GDP, human capital, globalization, and financial risk are interconnected and have long-term associations in these countries. The study employs various methodologies and tests to analyze the data. The author employs novel panel methodologies such as the method of moment of quantile regression analysis, slope heterogeneity, cross-section dependence test, and Westerlund cointegration. Additionally, a causality test along with the latest unit-root test is used. The results reveal important findings. As GDP expands, its impact on international tourism diminishes at higher quantiles, suggesting a decreasing effect. However, GDP still contributes positively to tourism across all quantiles. Human capital has a stronger effect on attracting tourists at lower quantiles, while globalization has varying impacts depending on the level of globalization in a country. Financial risk has a greater negative impact on tourism in larger economies compared to smaller ones. The study also examines the relationship between CO2 emissions and the variables under investigation. It finds that the effect of GDP on emissions decreases at higher quantiles, indicating a smaller contribution. Human capital has a larger effect on reducing emissions at lower quantiles, while the impact of globalization is more significant at higher quantiles. Moreover, an increase in financial risk leads to a decrease in emissions, particularly at lower quantiles. Based on these findings, the study suggests policy recommendations for South Asian economies. These include promoting sustainable tourism practices, investing in human capital development, encouraging responsible globalization, mitigating financial risks, and aligning tourism strategies with sustainable development goals.

Abstract:This study investigates the asymmetric effects of international and domestic tourism on economic complexity worldwide. Despite the significant contributions of international and domestic tourism to a country’s economic activities, their potential impacts on economic complexity remain underexplored in the literature. Using the Dynamic Fixed Effects Autoregressive Distributed Lag (DFE ARDL) model, this research estimates the short and long-term effects of domestic and international tourism on economic complexity for 123 economies from 1995 to 2018. The empirical analysis reveals that domestic tourism spending has an insignificant negative impact on economic complexity in the short term. However, in the long run, it exerts a significant positive effect, suggesting that domestic tourism could be a powerful driver of the long-term geography of economic activities. In contrast, international tourism contributes to economic complexity in the short term, but its long-term impact is less significant. These findings affirm the instrumental role of tourism development in enhancing economic complexity and underscore the importance of a balanced approach to tourism development, considering its short and long-term effects on economic complexity. The study contributes to the literature by providing the first evidence of a connection between the tourism industry and economic complexity from a global perspective.

Abstract:This research discovers how international tourism affects the economic growth of selected Asian states, e.g., Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, throughout 2001–2019. To attain this objective, we have employed various regression estimation approaches, e.g., Fixed Effect Model (FEM) and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) technique. The statistical results of the applied techniques reveal that international tourism activities have a positive and significant effect on the GDP growth rate because such kinds of activities considerably contribute to creating opportunities that lead to hoist economic activities and economic growth. Moreover, an influx of tourism increases tourism activities and operations, which opens further doors to opportunities and generates revenue for the government. Similarly, the GDP per capita has been positively and significantly influenced by international tourism activities. The government and host country should emphasize the activities and operations regarding tourism and should also concentrate on the dynamic role, importance, and sensitivity of tourism operations in under-analyzed economies. This research brings a new arrangement of the variable, which has never been considered in prior literature.

Abstract:Tourism Economics, Ahead of Print. This paper investigates the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in developed and developing countries, examining the nonlinear impact of tourism on carbon emissions and ecological footprint from 1990 to 2019. Using a panel fixed effects model, results show a tourism-extended EKC for developed countries but a U-shaped relationship for developing countries. The study uniquely distinguishes between trade and financial globalization, de jure and de facto globalization, to assess economic globalization's potential to moderate tourism's environmental impact. Developed countries experience detrimental effects from trade de jure globalization, while developing countries benefit from expanding trade de facto and financial de jure globalization. These findings inform eco-friendly tourism initiatives and globalization strategies.

Abstract:This study applies the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to examine the impacts of globalization and country risks on China’s tourism service trade over the period 1984–2015. The results reveal that in the long run, globalization has a significant negative impact on tourism service exports and tourism service trade balances, while a significant positive impact on tourism service imports. In the short run, globalization has a significant negative impact on tourism service imports, while a significant positive impact on tourism service exports and trade balances. Country stability could roughly mitigate these negative and positive impacts of globalization on tourism service trade in both the short and long run. Moreover, the speed of adjustment from the short run to long run equilibrium path is relatively fast. These results are important for China’s policy makers when formulating a strategy for the development of tourism service trade.

Moderation analysis on tourism–growth–emissions nexus in South Asia

Abstract:This study makes significant incursion into the tourism literature by investigating whether per capita (PC) income moderates the impact of carbon dioxide emissions on tourism development in South Asia. With an unbalanced panel data on six South Asian countries from 1995 to 2019, the study engages a battery of analytical techniques which includes the Prais–Winsten panel-corrected standard error to probe the discourse. Findings reveal, inter alia, that at the 1% level, (1) carbon emission is a significant and negative predictor of tourism, (2) the impact of emission on tourism differs significantly across South Asia, (3) economic growth is a significant and positive predictor of tourism, (4) the impact of growth on tourism differs significantly across South Asia and (5) growth reduces the devastating impact of emissions. Country results are mixed. Specifically, emissions reduce tourism in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka but boosts tourism in Nepal and Pakistan. Conversely, economic growth increases tourism and reduces the devastating impact of emissions in Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka, whereas it reduces tourism and increases the devastating impact of emissions in Nepal and Pakistan. Although the study submits that growth is a critical driver of tourism in South Asia, the moderating impact of growth is not sufficient to attenuate the total negative impact of carbon emissions. In addition, the lack of consistency of the results across the selected countries suggests that PC income and carbon emissions levels are greatly dispersed. Causal relations align with the underlying results, and policy recommendations are discussed.

Abstract:This paper examines the relationship between carbon emissions and international tourism growth through the channels of globalization, energy consumption, and real income via testing the environmental Kuznets curve over the periods of 1995 to 2014 for 15 selected tourism destination states that prioritized tourism as a means of maximizing economic growth. Using the panel data analysis, results confirm globalization-tourism-induced EKC hypothesis for tourist destination states. This implies international tourism growth and carbon emissions, through the channels of energy consumption, globalization, and real income, are in a long-term equilibrium relationship. International tourism and squared term of real income have an inverse significant effect on carbon emission level, while energy consumption, globalization, and real income without squared term exert positive and significant effects on carbon emission level in the long-run. Thus, globalization-tourism-induced EKC hypothesis is suggested with credible policy suggestions in the case of tourist destination states.

Abstract:The United Nations' 'Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)' recommended seventeen viable strategies aimed at eradicating poverty, maintaining the quality of the natural environment, and assuring everyone's prosperity. Travel and tourism are the primary stream segments by which all three of the above-mentioned United Nations agendas may be effectively addressed. However, India's long-term vision is also in accordance with the SDGs, which place considerable attention on tourism expansion, invention, and sustainable development through the 'information and communication technology (ICT)' renaissance. In this milieu, considering annual data from 1990 to 2017, this research aims to examine the asymmetric linkage between tourism (no. of tourist arrivals), ICT (ratio of the population using the internet), and economic growth in India. We employed the 'non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL)' bounds approach to explore the asymmetric cointegration among the drivers under investigation and confirmed long-run cointegration. Results from NARDL elicited that a positive shock in the partial sum of ICT dwindles tourist arrivals, whereas a negative shock to the ICT fosters tourist visits in the long run. Furthermore, it seems that the expansion of the Indian tourist industry is positively correlated with economic growth. Observing the response of environmental and economic performances to tourism in light of structural changes

Abstract:In the current study, we explored the asymmetric impact of structural changes and tourism activities on economic performance and carbon emissions in selected economies of the Asian region from 1995 to 2020. Our findings say that the long-run estimates of positive shock in tourism are positively significant in China and India. Conversely, the estimated coefficient of negative shock in tourism is positive and significant in India only. These results confer that a rise in tourism activities causes economic growth to rise in China and India, whereas a fall in tourism activities causes economic activities to fall in India only. Similarly, a long-run positive structural change improves the economic growth in Thailand, Malaysia, and India. However, surprisingly, a long-run negative structural change also enhances the economic development of Thailand and Japan. On the other side, a positive shock in the tourism industry causes CO 2 emissions to fall in China, Japan, and Malaysia and rise in India. Likewise, a negative shock in tourist activities reduces in Japan and increases carbon emissions in Malaysia. Moreover, a positive structural change reduces CO 2 emissions in China, Thailand, and Japan, while a negative structural change reduces CO 2 emissions in China and India only.

Abstract:The study analysed the impact of tourism, trade, consumption expenditure, electricity usage, and population on carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) in leading tourist destinations. The study uses a panel dataset of 32 countries from different continents between 2001 and 2020 and applies the generalized method of moments (GMM) and Quantile Regression approaches. The results suggest that tourism (arrivals and revenues) can reduce environmental degradation, and that CO2 emissions increase due to factors such as GDP per capita, electricity consumption, and population growth. Trade openness can reduce CO2 emissions, and controlling for final consumption also indicates a decrease in CO2 emissions. The study suggests that sustainable tourism practices, responsible consumption, and larger international integration may play a role in mitigating CO2 emissions. Leading tourist destinations should develop sustainable urban areas to accommodate population growth, and embrace eco-friendly technologies, infrastructure, and consumption patterns to promote sustainable economic growth while reducing CO2 emissions.
