Abstract:PI controller, a form of PID controller without derivative term, is one of the most widely used controller in industrial application. PI controller was being selected due to the presence of derivative component that could yield instability in the presence of noise. PI controller is tuned by using GA-Original ITSE, GA-Modified ITSE, CHR, and AMIGO. The modification is crucial as original error criteria produce insignificant improvement in performance parameters such as settling time and overshoot percentage. A tuning method with balance set-point tracking performance and disturbance rejection properties is needed as normally controller with good set-point tracking is associated with poor disturbance rejection properties. The plant is tuned by stated tuning methods with and without disturbance. The controller is then being implemented and the step responses are being evaluated. Two type of tests, load test and surface inclination angle test are conducted. Disturbance rejection performance is evaluated for all tuning methods. By Simulation GA-Modified ITSE produce the fastest settling time, improving 36.47–44.47% compare with CHR and AMIGO. GA-Modified ITSE also performed the best in reducing overshoot percentage to 0.0361%, with percentage difference of 198.681% compared with second best performer, AMIGO. GA-Modified ITSE shows the best performance in disturbance rejection properties with settling time of 5.5 s. Experimentally, GA-Modified performed the best in most of step response parameters, overshoot percentage and settling time with 3.7833% and 8.1301 s respectively. During disturbance rejection test, AMIGO and GA-Modified ITSE shows satisfactory performance with better stability compared with CHR and GA-Original ITSE that yield oscillatory response.
