Abstract:We have developed an optical zoom system based on tunable lens with polymer membrane and multilayered structure. The presented system employed two tunable lenses and two doublet lenses as the main refractive units. Each tunable lens had a delicately designed, solid-liquid mixed structure with multiple internal slim holes, which helped to improve the lens optical properties and stability against gravity. The optical structure and regulation principle of the zoom system is presented, as well as the detailed fabrication process of the tunable lens. Under different displacement loads, the lens deformation properties, and the adjustment ability and imaging characteristics of the zoom system were measured and analyzed. Besides, the spot diagram, field curvature and distortion of the system were simulated using the Zemax software. The magnification of the designed system could be regulated from 0.2X to 4.3X flexibly depending on the focal variation of each tunable lens.
Design of Athermalized Wide-Angle Low-Distortion Lens Using Freeform Surface

Abstract:The wide-angle lens is widely used with the advantage of a large field of view, but it is difficult to solve the problem of large distortion. Therefore, the research on how to design a wide-angle low-distortion lens with excellent imaging quality is very meaningful. In this paper, we propose a high-performance wide-angle small distortion optical system, which has a horizontal field angle of 110 degrees and a vertical field angle of 77 degrees, focal length of 2.03mm, f number of 1.65, and a total length of 16.5mm. By introducing a non-rotational symmetric freeform surface into the last side of the wide-angle optical system and combining with several even aspheric surfaces, the f-tan(theta) distortion in the X direction is controlled to -6%similar to+1%, and the f-tan(theta) distortion in the Y direction is controlled to less than 1%. At the same time, the MTF of the system is greater than 0.35 at 125lp/mm, so that the circular image plane can better adapt to the rectangular sensor. In addition, due to the introduction of the freeform surface in the system, the change of system structure with temperature becomes more complex. We carry out thermal analysis for this surface and calculate the change of structure with temperature. Finally, we completed the athermalized design of the lens, so that the wide-angle lens can work in the range of -40 degrees C similar to+80 degrees C. This optical system has great development potential in security monitoring, UAV detection and other fields that may encounter extreme environments.
Zoom Optical System Using Tunable Polymer Lens

Abstract:This paper demonstrated a zoom optical system with variable magnification based on the tunable polymer lens. The designed system mainly consists of two polymer lenses, voice coil motors, a doublet lens and CMOS chip. The zoom magnification can be adjusted by altering the focal length of the two elastic polymer lenses synergistically through controlling the output displacement of the voice coil motor. A static doublet lens in combination with the polymer lenses stabilize the image plane at the CMOS chip. The optical structure of the zoom system is presented, as well as a detailed description including the lens materials and fabrication process. Images with each zoom magnification are captured, and the Spot diagram and MTF are simulated using Zemax software. A change in magnification from 0.13×to 8.44×is demonstrated within the tiny 0.4 mm variation of the displacement load, and produce a 16.1×full range of magnification experimentally. Simulation analyses show that all the radii of the spot diagram under different magnifications are less than 11.3 um, and the modulation transfer function reaches 107 line pairs per mm. The designed optical system shows the potential for developing stable, integrated, and low-cost zoom systems with large magnification range.

Abstract:A compact varifocal panoramic annular lens (PAL) system based on the four-component mechanical zoom method is proposed, which solves the problem that the traditional PAL system cannot zoom in to the region of interest. By moving the zoom group and the compensation group, our design achieves continuous zooming, in which the focal length changes from 3.8 to 6 mm. It can keep the position of the image surface unchanged while maintaining a compact structure. The system has a field of view (FoV) of 25°-100° in wide-angle mode and an FoV of 25°-65° in telephoto mode. The modulation transfer function of the wide-angle view is higher than 0.22 at 147 lp/mm. The F-theta distortion is less than 3%, and the relative illuminance is higher than 0.9 in the zoom process. Compared with the zoom PAL system with multiple free-form aspheric surfaces, the proposed system uses multiple spherical lenses and only one Q-type asphere lens to achieve outstanding panoramic zoom imaging results. It is practical and straightforward, easy to manufacture, detect, and mass produce.

Abstract:A zoom lens system is usually composed of several components. Some of the components can be moved to change the focal length or magnification. Zoom lens system design is more complicated than fixed-focus lens design due to the moving of some components. In this paper, an optimization method that is used to design zoom lens systems is presented. Using this method, the Gaussian parameters of zoom lens systems are optimized at first, and then the initial structure parameters in each component are generated and optimized. At last the aberration balance is made using multi-configuration. In this paper the flowchart of optimization design for such complex optical systems is showed and the algorithms are described. As a conclusion, the relationship between power distribution, initial structure and the aberrations is considered at the beginning, the evaluation criteria are reliable and efficiency for designing zoom lens systems.

Abstract:In view of whether the optical system of a focal length 14~360mm continuous zoom TV can obtain high quality and high reliability images in high and low temperature environment, especially in extreme low temperature environment. The thermal design of zoom TV optical-mechanical system using passive thermal control and active thermal control is proposed. The passive thermal control uses polyimide as insulation material to increase the thermal resistance between the camera interior and the outside. Active thermal control uses electric heating film to dynamically heat the key parts of the camera lens. Under the condition of low temperature, the finite element method is used to establish the heat transfer model of the whole lens assembly in the workbench finite element software, and analyze the heat load composition, including the heating power load, the heat convection load and the heat radiation load, and carry on the steady state thermal analysis. Through thermodynamic analysis and experimental verification, the consistency of focal plane of zoom camera optical system is good after taking active thermal control measures at the extreme low temperature of -45°C. The optical transfer function (OTF) of zoom lens at cut-off frequency (100lp/mm) is 0.25 higher than that before thermal design, which can meet the requirements of thermal control design with better transfer function distribution and higher imaging quality. The correctness of the simulation results and the rationality of the optical-mechanical design are verified.

Abstract:Zoom lens with variable focal length is well fit for researching objectives far and near. Design of zoom lens working at mid-wave infrared wavelength (7.7-10.3_m) and its view field 10 degrees is presented. Determination of the initial configuration of the variable and the compensate groups are discussed according to the mechanism compensate curves. The compensate group is determined with positive power. Its focal length changes during a large scope, which is from 300mm to 100mm. And the corresponding F number variables from 3.75 to 1.25. So the residual aberration needs to be carefully corrected. The optimized zoom lens is composed of four group elements, and its performance reaches diffraction limited at each focal position.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:This paper proposes a zoom lens system without moving elements. The designed system consists of four two-chamber liquid lenses. Each chamber is filled with different liquids. The design principle is analyzed. Optimization method is used to get the optimal solution. With the solution, the proposed zoom lens system can obtain achromatic, spherical aberration corrected image in the zooming range. We give the detailed simulation examples. The results indicate that the proposed design can help to improve the optical performances of zoom lens system.

Abstract:With the rapid development of security market, the glass-plastic hybrid lens has gradually become a choice for the special requirements like high imaging quality in a wide temperature range and low cost. The reduction of spherical aberration is achieved by using aspherical surface instead of increasing the number of lenses. Obviously, plastic aspherical lens plays a great role in the cost reduction. However, the hybrid lens has a priority issue, which is the large thermal coefficient of expansion of plastic, causing focus shift and seriously affecting the imaging quality, so the hybrid lens is highly sensitive to the change of temperature. To ensure the system operates normally in a wide temperature range, it is necessary to eliminate the influence of temperature on the hybrid lens system. A practical design method named the Athermal Material Map is summarized and verified by an athermal design example according to the design index. It includes the distribution of optical power and selection of glass or plastic. The design result shows that the optical system has excellent imaging quality at a wide temperature range from -20 degrees C to 70 degrees C. The method of athermal design in this paper has generality which could apply to optical system with plastic aspherical surface.
A High-Speed And Small-Volume Ir Zoom Lens Using Root-Exchange Theory And Doe Element

Abstract:The high-speed and small-volume mid-wave IR zoom lens capable of 16x magnification using a 320x256 IR FPA detector has been described. The system magnification can be continuously adjusted by simply moving two lens groups, which uses the root-exchange theory. The object-image exchange theory and root-exchange theory are presented. The structure using root-exchange theory can get large zoom ratio with simple volume and the smooth zoom curve. Mechanically compensated IR zoom lens design has these questions: firstly, big volume caused by complex optical structure; secondly, limited IR material and obvious focus shift with temperature change. The zoom lens using mechanically compensated method has solved all the questions that existed in traditional system. The system also contains much less optical material and has a very simple structure by using DOE elements. The element of first moving group and the second element of the second moving group are both DOE. As the DOE has minus Abb number, which is opposite of refractive materials, it can minimize the higher order chromatic aberration. Based on the characteristics, the chromatic aberration was balanced. Research on the thermal analysis and compensation is considered. The passive athermalization is made by DOE elements. DOE elements make the zoom lens maintain its performance when it is operating between -20 degrees and 60 degrees. The results show the high magnification zoom lens design performance, with small volume and light weight. The aberration of the system were well corrected and diffraction limited performance was achieved in required temperature range.

Abstract:A diffractive lens based on metasurfaces has many advantages such as flatness, small aberrations, and compactness. The focal length can be adjusted by changing the lateral displacement between a pair of conjugate metasurfaces while fixing their axial distance, thereby forming a very compact zoom lens. However, chromatic aberration of diffractive optical elements restricts this system to working at one wavelength. This Letter proposes a metalens design method based on novel three-layer polarization-insensitive nanoposts, which can improve transmission amplitude and satisfy the achromatic zoom function with wavelengths ranging from 1310 nm to 1550 nm. The focal length can be adjusted from 31.2 µm to 19.8 µm, corresponding to extremal wavelength-dependent focal length relative deviation of 8.98%. This achromatic zoom metalens design method could have applications in various fields including augmented reality and integrated optical systems.

The design principle is analyzed. Optimization method is used to get the optimal solution. With the solution, the proposed zoom lens system can obtain achromatic and spherical aberration corrected images in a particular zooming range, and no moving element is needed in the proposed zoom lens system. By choosing proper liquids, it can be designed to work within particular working regions with improved optical performance. We give the detailed simulation examples. Abstract:Advanced optical imaging systems should have high imaging quality and robotic environmental suitability. Such a near-infrared lens with the Pitzval style is designed and developed. Its operation wavelength is from 0.72μm to 1.0μm and its relative aperture as high as 1:2. Its passive athermalization design to suit for the wide operation temperature range from -45°C to 60°C is implemented through optimal selection of its optical glasses and opto-mechamical structure. Sharp ghost image due to even reflection at optical surfaces is eliminated with our suggested means, and thus stray light within its image plane is both low and uniform even under backlighting. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of the designed lens at the Niquest spatial frequency 90 lines/mm of focal plane array detector is higher than 0.6 within its operation temperature range and its entire field of view. Eighty percent of its diffraction encircled energy is within one pixel of the detector. Its point source transmittance (PST) when the illuminating off-angle of point source is from 5 to 60 degrees, which is just out of its field of view, is computed through modeling and simulation, and as low as between 10-3 to 10-11. The experimentally measured MTF values and veiling glare index of our developed lens reaches respectively to 0.61 and 0.372% and validates our suggested design in the paper.

Abstract:In this study, a transverse moving infrared optical continuous zoom system based on the Alvarez lens is proposed to address the challenges associated with the complex structure and large volume of traditional axial-moving mechanical optical zoom systems. The system consists of two sets of Alvarez lenses, apertures, focusing lenses, and infrared detectors. Herein, two sets of Alvarez lenses adopt a Kepler-type telescope structure, where the first set of Alvarez lenses functions as the zoom group and the second set of Alvarez lenses serves as the compensation group. The infinitely far incident light passes through two sets of Alvarez lenses and exits, the emitted parallel light is then focused and imaged onto the target surface of the infrared detector through a fixed focal lens. Utilizing Zemax software for optical simulation, our designed optical zoom system covers the 8-12 mu m long wave infrared band, with a maximum field of view angle of 6 degrees, a maximum pupil diameter of 6 mm, an F-number of 2, distortion of <2.1%, and a total optical length of similar to 74 mm. The Alvarez lens only requires to be horizontally moved by similar to 1 mm to achieve continuous optical magnification from 5x to 15x. Moreover, the modulation transfer function of the proposed optical zoom system can attain up to 0.5@17 lp/mm, assuming a resolution of 320x240 and pixel sizes of 30 mu m for the infrared detector. The simulation results indicate that the system has the advantages of high magnification, a compact structure, and high imaging quality, making it a promising candidate for applications in the field of miniaturized infrared zoom imaging.

Abstract:A dual-band optical system with a long back working distance and limited far zoom is proposed and designed for visible light (486-656 nm) and near-infrared (900-1700 nm) to satisfy the urgent demand for multiband fluorescence imaging in biomedicine imaging research. A zoom structure suitable for the dual-band system is adopted to address technical problems such as the broad range of chromatic aberration variation and limited selection of component optical power caused by the dual-band long-back-working distance zoom system. The initial optical powers of four groups of zoom structures of the system are calculated. The feasibility of the initial structure of the zoom scheme is verified using the ideal paraxial plane. The independent aberration design is performed for each group element of the system. In the common optical path part, dual-band aberration is optimized. The rear group uses a splitter prism to separate the two bands. Different rear fixed groups are designed for dual bands to correct the residual aberration of the system, and dual-band imaging under the long back working distance is realized. The system exhibits good tolerance characteristics, the zoom curve is smooth without an inflection point, the image plane is stable during the zooming process, and the imaging quality is excellent.

Abstract:The theoretical method for analyzing the first-order optics of stabilized zoom lenses with two focal-length-variable elements is presented. The first and second derivatives and the Hessian matrix of the zoom equations with respect to the Gaussian parameters are determined to represent the sensitivity of the zoom ratio of the system to changes in the corresponding system variables. Four-group stabilized zoom lens designs with 2: 1 and 5: 1 zoom ratios are successfully investigated.

Abstract:In order to design an optical system with focal length range from 17 to 1 700 mm,a proper initial optical layout is selected first,the rule of system performance influenced by Guassian solution is found through comparing Guassian optical calculation results,and the key parameters of the system are selected.Then the configuration of each assembly is chosen through analyzing the relative aperture and characteristics of aberrations,and the system aberration is corrected and balanced.The total track of the result lens is 760 mm,the modulation transfer functions at 50 lp/mm for each zoom configurations and all fields of view are greater than 0.3,and all indexes satisfy the command of system.
