Abstract:Abstract For the purpose of monitoring for compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), the International Monitoring System (IMS) is being established that includes 40 sensor systems for atmospheric xenon radioactivity. Its purpose is to monitor the atmosphere for signatures that may indicate a nuclear explosion. Normal operational releases of radioxenon from nuclear facilities can regularly be observed by these very high-sensitive noble gas systems. Existing best estimates of releases for a generic year are unlikely to apply for any specific year at the level of individual facilities because their releases are highly variable and can change by several orders of magnitude from year to year. In this paper, best knowledge of the radioxenon emission inventory from nuclear power plants (NPPs) is collected for the calendar year 2014. The distribution function for each CTBT relevant radioxenon isotope is derived from all releases from NPPs as reported for 2014. The data of this paper can be used for developing and validating methods based on atmospheric transport modelling that are designed to enhance understanding of the impact of known sources on the IMS background observations.

An Estimate of Carbon-14 Inventory at Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant in the Republic of Korea

Abstract:In this paper, carbon-14 inventory of Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) which has CANDU type reactors was estimated for 1984–2002. The carbon-14 inventory can be estimated based on a simple relation: [carbon-14 inventory]=[carbon-14 production]—[carbon-14 emission]. The second term can be calculated whereas the third term should be measured. However, all the measured data for carbon-14 emissions at Wolsong NPP are not available. So an empirical relation is employed: [98.283%]=[100%]—[1.717%]. From this relation, the theoretical values for the total production, emission and inventory of carbon-14 at Wolsong NPP for 1984–2002 are estimated to be 694.2 TBq, 11.9 TBq and 682.3 TBq, respectively. Comparison of carbon-14 emission levels at Wolsong NPP and Pickering A NPP in terms of rates for theoretical productions and measured emissions of carbon-14 per unit power generated shows that although more carbon-14 is produced, less carbon-14 is released at Wolsong NPP except for 1999. Furthermore, comparison of the extend of carbon-14 emissions at both NPPs in terms of ratios of measured to theoretical carbon-14 emissions indicates that the control and regulation of carbon-14 emission are more effectively performed at Wolsong NPP.

Abstract:Monitoring of radioactive noble gases, in particular xenon isotopes, is a crucial element of the verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The capability of the noble gas network, which is currently under construction, to detect signals from a nuclear explosion critically depends on the background created by other sources. Therefore, the global distribution of these isotopes based on emissions and transport patterns needs to be understood. A significant xenon background exists in the reactor regions of North America, Europe and Asia. An emission inventory of the four relevant xenon isotopes has recently been created, which specifies source terms for each power plant. As the major emitters of xenon isotopes worldwide, a few medical radioisotope production facilities have been recently identified, in particular the facilities in Chalk River (Canada), Fleurus (Belgium), Pelindaba (South Africa) and Petten (Netherlands). Emissions from these sites are expected to exceed those of the other sources by orders of magnitude. In this study, emphasis is put on 133Xe, which is the most prevalent xenon isotope. First, based on the emissions known, the resulting 133Xe concentration levels at all noble gas stations of the final CTBT verification network were calculated and found to be consistent with observations. Second, it turned out that emissions from the radioisotope facilities can explain a number of observed peaks, meaning that atmospheric transport modelling is an important tool for the categorization of measurements. Third, it became evident that Nuclear Power Plant emissions are more difficult to treat in the models, since their temporal variation is high and not generally reported. Fourth, there are indications that the assumed annual emissions may be underestimated by factors of two to ten, while the general emission patterns seem to be well understood. Finally, it became evident that 133Xe sources mainly influence the sensitivity of the monitoring system in the mid-latitudes, where the network coverage is particularly good.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWhile assessing the environmental impact of nuclear power plants, researchers have focused their attention on radiocarbon (14C) owing to its high mobility in the environment and important radiological impact on human beings. The 10 MW high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTR-10) is the first pebble-bed gas-cooled test reactor in China that adopted helium as primary coolant and graphite spheres containing tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) coated particles as fuel elements. A series of experiments on the 14C source terms in HTR-10 was conducted: (1) measurement of the specific activity and distribution of typical nuclides in the irradiated graphite spheres from the core, (2) measurement of the activity concentration of 14C in the primary coolant, and (3) measurement of the amount of 14C discharged in the effluent from the stack. All experimental data on 14C available for HTR-10 were summarized and analyzed using theoretical calculations. A sensitivity study on the total porosity, open porosity, and percentage of closed pores that became open after irradiating the matrix graphite was performed to illustrate their effects on the activity concentration of 14C in the primary coolant and activity amount of 14C in various deduction routes.
Efficiency calibration and self-attenuation correction in radioxenon measurement using β-γ coincidence method

Abstract:Measurement of the four radioxenon isotopes, namely 131mXe, 133mXe, 133Xe, and 135Xe, play a key role in underground nuclear test monitoring for ensuring compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). To improve detection sensitivity, a β-γ coincidence technique is commonly used. Due to the presence of the gas matrix, such as stable xenon, nitrogen, helium, the self-attenuation effects should be taken into account when measuring different types of sample. In order to improve the accuracy of the measurement, the detection efficiencies of X-rays and γ-rays were derived by using a simulation gas calibration source with low density of sponge matrix. The detection efficiencies of β-particles and conversion electrons (CEs) were calibrated by measuring radioxenon sample. The self-attenuation correction factors of X-rays and γ-rays were determined by Geant4 simulation method. The self-attenuation correction factors of β-particles and CEs were provided by measuring the radioxenon samples with different volumes of xenon, nitrogen and helium.

Abstract:In this research, we investigated to examine the emission characteristics of radioactive carbon emitted from three types of pressurized water reactors. And we examined the possibility of 14C inventory reduction by changing operating conditions of one of the nuclear power plants. Results showed that 14C inventory in the reactor coolant system (RCS) remained constant before the overhaul (O/H) period and more than 90% of the radioactive carbon was found to be organic form. At spent fuel pool, the 14C chemical form of the liquid phase during the O/H period was also dominated by the inorganic (14CO2) form as in the case of the RCS due to the acid oxidized state. We applied gas stripper (G/S) and VCT purge operation to perform the 14C inventory reduction operation for Combustion Engineering type. In the case of gas strippers, approximately 50% of 14C inventory was reduced in the first year and then about 97% in the second year. Unlike our expectations, in case of VCT purge operation, 14C reduction effect was not showed greatly.

Abstract:The International Monitoring System, the primary means of verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, monitors the planet for any sign of a nuclear explosion. Regarding the International Monitoring System radionuclide stations, it is known that radioxenon released from nuclear facilities such as medical isotope production facilities and nuclear power plants influences the stations. For the purposes of monitoring nuclear explosions, it is important to better understand the radioxenon background based on these nuclear facilities. The probability density functions of background activity concentration at IMS radionuclide stations are estimated using a Monte Carlo method based on emissions from known nuclear facilities and source receptor sensitivity data. This paper describes two case studies of radioxenon detections at radionuclide stations applying the developed approach. This method could be one of several prospective approaches to predict the activity concentrations of isotopes of radioxenon at radionuclide stations in Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization's (CTBTO's) prototype xenon background estimation tool software. It can also be used in characterization of CTBT-relevant nuclear events for expert technical analysis.

Abstract:Main text Section III (neutron measurements) of the Comité Consultatif des Rayonnements Ionisants, CCRI, conducted a comparison of primary measurements of the neutron emission rate of a 252 Cf radionuclide source. A single 252 Cf source was circulated to all participants between 2016 and 2020. Ten laboratories participated -CMI (Czech Republic), KRISS (Republic of Korea), IRD/LNMRI (Brazil), LNE-LNHB (France), NIM (China), NIST (USA), NMIJ (Japan), NPL (UK), NRC (Canada) and VNIIM (Russia) - with NPL making their measurements at the start and repeating them at the end of the exercise to verify the 250 Cf content of the source. Each laboratory reported the emission rate into 4π sr together with a detailed uncertainty budget. All participants used the manganese bath technique except NMIJ who used a relative method based on measurements with a 3 He detector in a graphite pile. VNIIM also made measurements using an associated particle technique. CMI, KRISS, LNE-LNHB, NIM, NPL and VNIIM also measured the anisotropy of the source although this did not formally form part of the comparison. Abstract:Abstract An analysis of a data set consisting of 3 years of high time resolution radioxenon stack measurements from the three nuclear reactors at the Forsmark nuclear power plant in Sweden, as well as measurements of atmospheric radioxenon in Stockholm air, 110 km away, is presented. The main causes for the stack releases, such as the function of the xenon mitigation systems, presence of leaking fuel elements, and reactor operations such as shutdown and startup, are discussed in relation to the stack data. The relation between radioxenon releases and reactor operation is clearly illustrated by the correlation between the stack measurements and thermal reactor power. In general, the isotopic ratios of the Stockholm measurements, which are shown to mainly originate from Forsmark releases, agree well with stack measurements, and with a modeled reactor operational sequence. Results from a forward atmospheric dispersion calculation agree very well with observed plume arrival times and widths, and with some exceptions, also with absolute activity concentrations. The results illustrates the importance of detailed knowledge of radioxenon emissions from nuclear power plants when interpreting radioxenon measurements for nuclear test ban verification, and provide new input to this kind of analysis. Furthermore, it demonstrates the possibility to use sensitive radioxenon detection systems to remotely detect and verify reactor operation.

Correction factors for induced radioactivity: comparing simplified continuous and periodic irradiation scenarios in medical cyclotron decommissioning

Abstract:The use of a Monte Carlo code in the assessment of residual radioactivity for decommissioning of a medical cyclotron facility requires a reasonable approximation to the facility's history of operations. A periodic irradiation scenario simulating the cyclotron's daily operation for radioisotope production is generally considered reasonable, but its implementation in the code's input file can be cumbersome because more than thousands of irradiation cycles must be modeled. In practice, two simplified scenarios with continuous irradiation are commonly used instead: (i) omitting the downtime between two irradiation periods and (ii) extending the irradiation duration across the entire operational lifespan of the facility, albeit with a reduced beam current to maintain workload consistency. A systematic comparison of residual radionuclide productions across various half-lives under these three scenarios was performed. This technical note presents the resulting correction factors for the two simplified continuous irradiation models, enhancing their applicability in estimating radioactive inventories under a range of circumstances.

Abstract:Main text Since 1976, 23 laboratories have submitted 45 samples of 137 Cs to the International Reference System (SIR) for activity comparison at the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), with comparison identifier BIPM.RI(II)-K1.Cs-137. The NRC (Canada) and the TENMAK-NÜKEN (Türkiye) participated in the comparison and the key comparison reference value (KCRV) has been updated. The degrees of equivalence between each equivalent activity measured in the SIR or linked to the SIR from the COOMET.RI(II)-K2.Cs-137 comparison and the updated KCRV have been calculated and the results are given in the form of a table. Abstract:Main text Two new participations in the BIPM.RI(II)-K1.Cr-51 comparison have been added to the previous results and this has produced a revised value for the key comparison reference value (KCRV), calculated using the power-moderated weighted mean. A link has been made to the EURAMET.RI(II)-K2.Cr-51 comparison piloted by the POLATOM in 2022, who sent an ampoule from the EURAMET comparison to the International Reference System (SIR). The LNE-LNHB (France) used the EURAMET comparison to update its degree of equivalence. The degrees of equivalence between each equivalent activity measured in the SIR and the KCRV have been calculated and the results are given in the form of a table for the latest results in the BIPM.RI(II)-K1.Cr-51, and the linked EURAMET.RI(II)-K2.Cr-51. Abstract:Nuclear data with high accuracy for minor actinides play an important role in nuclear technology applications, including reactor design and operation, fuel cycle, estimation of the amount of minor actinides in high burn-up reactors and the minor actinides transmutation. Based on a new set of neutron optical model parameter and the reaction cross section systematics of fissile isotopes, a full set of 236,238Np neutron reaction data from 10−5 eV ∼20 MeV are updated and improved through theoretical calculation. Mainly revised quantities include the total, elastic, inelastic, fission, (n, 2n) and (n, γ) reaction cross sections as well as angular distribution etc. The promising results are obtained when the renewal evaluated data of 236,238Np will replace the evaluated data in CENDL-3.1 database.

Abstract:In practically all known till now methods of nuclear chronometry there were usually taken into account the life-times of only fundamental states of $\alpha$-radioactive nuclei. But in the processes of nuclear synthesis in stars and under the influence of the constant cosmic radiation on surfaces of planets the excitations of the $\alpha$-radioactive nuclei are going on. Between them there are the states with the excited $\alpha$-particles inside the parent nuclei and so with much smaller life-times. And inside the large masses of stellar, terrestrial and meteoric substances the transitions between different internal conditions of radioactive nuclei are accompanied by infinite chains of the $\gamma$-radiations with the subsequent $\gamma$-absorptions, the further $\gamma$-radiations etc. For the description of the $\alpha$-decay evolution with considering of such excited states and multiple $\gamma$-radiations and $\gamma$-absorptions inside stars and under the influence of the cosmic radiation on the earth surface we present the quantum-mechanical approach, which is based on the generalized Krylov-Fock theorem. Some simple estimations are also presented. They bring to the conclusion that the usual (non-corrected) "nuclear clocks" do really indicate not to realistic values but to the \emph{upper limits} of the durations of the $\alpha$-decay stellar and planet processes.

Abstract:Medical linear accelerators with an energy of 8 MV or higher are radiated owing to photonuclear reactions and neutron capture reactions. It is necessary to quantitatively evaluate the concentration of radioactive isotopes when replacing or disposing them. HPGe detectors are commonly used to identify isotopes and measure radioactivity. However, because the detection efficiency is generally calibrated using a standard material with a density of 1.0 g/cm 3 , a self-absorption effect occurs if the density of the measured material is high. In this study, self-absorption correction factors were calculated for tungsten, lead, copper, and SUS-303, which are the main materials of medical linear accelerator head parts, for each gamma-ray energy using MCNP 6.2 code. The self-absorption effect was more pronounced as the energy of the emitted gamma rays decreased and the density of the measured materials increased. These correction factors were applied to the radioactivity measurements of the in-built and portable HPGe detectors. Furthermore, compared to the surface dose rate measured by the survey meter, the accuracy of the measurements of radioactivity improved by an average of 124.31 and 100.53 % for in-built and portable HPGe detectors, respectively. The results showed a good agreement, with an average difference of 3.70 and 5.24 %.
