Teachers and Teaching
Abstract:Educational authorities are proposing policies that mandate or encourage subject integration. These curriculum directions are often met by teacher opposition and implementation is limited. Reluctance to participate in programs for integrated learning may be due to conflicts between teachers' beliefs about the nature of their disciplines and the structures proposed to generate subject fusion. The conceptions of mathematics held by four exemplary secondary school mathematics teachers and. their images of curriculum integration are analysed and compared to a policy promoting integrated learning. These teachers hold a rich social constructivist view of their discipline and see subject integration taking place through interdisciplinary inquiry in opposition to an official curriculum document that presents an image of mathematics as a body of fixed useful procedures and suggests a sequenced model for subject integration.
