Abstract:When granular soil particles are compressed, particles are broken, especially under high-stress conditions, and the particle size distribution is altered, which greatly increases the compressibility of particles. In this paper, through confined compression tests of gypsum and calcareous sand under a high stress, the influence of the initial void ratio and initial particle size of uniform graded sand on the yield stress and compression index of samples is explored. With increasing vertical stress, the particle size distribution transitions from an initial uniform distribution into a fractal distribution. The particle size further attains an obvious fractal distribution under a high stress, and the fractal dimension obtained at each stress level exhibits a linear relationship with the relative crushing rate. The fractal dimension depends on the particle breakage probability. According to Weibull statistics, the relationship between the fractal dimension of particle breakage and the input energy per unit mass is derived. With increasing input energy, the fractal dimension of particle breakage approaches the ultimate fractal dimension. However, for the same material, maintaining a constant maximum stress, the fractal dimension of the particles obtained after reorganization compression continues to increase.
