Abstract:The purpose of the current study was to investigate both student-level and school-level factors influencing reading literacy of students in Turkey by using PISA 2018 data. The study focused on reading literacy since the main subject of PISA 2018 was selected as reading literacy. The design of the study is a correlational research examining the relationship between student and school variables and reading literacy. The stratified random sample consisted of 6890 15-year students from 186 different schools. Data coming from PISA 2018 dataset were analysed by Hierarchical Linear Modelling (HLM) at student and school levels. Student-level variables of disciplinary climate in test language lessons, enjoyment of reading, information and community technologies (ICT) competence, parental emotional support, perceived discriminating climate, and perceived cooperation significantly predicted reading literacy, while reading literacy was also predicted by school-level variables of proportion of parents involved in the school, shortage of educational material, student behaviour hindering learning, and teacher behaviour hindering learning. Fifty-seven percent of variance between reading literacy scores of the students were caused by differences between schools. Student-level variables which are disciplinary climate in test language lessons, enjoyment of reading, ICT competence, parental emotional support, perceived discriminating climate, and perceived cooperation significantly predicted reading literacy. On the other hand, school-level variables predicting reading literacy significantly were proportion of parents involved in the school, shortage of educational material, student behaviour hindering learning, and teacher behaviour hindering learning. By considering results of the current study, collaboration between school stakeholders is recommended to increase performance of the students.
Examining the 2019 Turkish Language Curriculum and PISA 2018 Reading Skills Test in Terms of Main Idea Teaching

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the achievements of 2019 Turkish Language Curriculum regarding main idea teaching in terms of PISA 2018 Reading Skills Test. In this regard, the overlap of the achievements in 2019 Turkish Language Curriculum in Turkey and the proficiency levels in PISA 2018 Reading Test were examined in the context of main idea teaching. The study used the qualitative research approach. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data gathered from the documents. Considering the aims of this study, first, the reading skills proficiency levels presented in detail in PISA 2018 were discussed considering main idea skills. It was concluded that the skill of “identifying the main idea” was used directly at all levels of reading skills consisting of levels 1c, 1b, 1a, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 in PISA 2018, and main idea skills were employed in understanding the text. In addition, Turkey’s performance in the PISA 2018 Reading Skills Test was discussed considering the study’s other sub-goals. Accordingly, it was concluded that students who participated in the PISA 2018 test were mostly successful at lower levels (levels 1, 2 and 3). The number of students at low levels was high, while the number of students with these skills decreased significantly at higher levels. The inclusion of main idea teaching in 2019 Turkish Language Curriculum was examined considering the final purpose of the study. In this context, several achievements were observed for the development of learning skills such as guessing the subject, determining the subject, determining the auxiliary ideas, determining the main idea, summarizing the subject and determining the title. However, the achievements of main idea in the 2019 Turkish Language Curriculum did not follow the order required in the reading comprehension process. In addition, the achievements of auxiliary ideas, which form the basis for determining the main idea of a text, were only available at the 7th and 8th grade levels, and any skills related to auxiliary ideas were not included at other grade levels. In this context, the main idea teaching should be handled in a detailed and systematic way in the context of theoretical structure and application processes, and the relevant curricula should be arranged accordingly.

Abstract:The main aim of this study is to compare the digital literacy levels of teachers in Turkey and of those in other member countries within the European Union eTwinning network. The present study has been conducted with a mixed methods research design, in which quantitative and qualitative methods are used together. The quantitative data of the research have been collected online from a total of 181 teachers, 106 from Turkey and 75 from the member countries of the eTwinning network by using the Digital Literacy Scale, while the qualitative data have been obtained from a total of 111 teachers. The quantitative data have been analyzed by using descriptive statistics and independent sample t test, whereas the qualitative data have been analyzed in line with the descriptive analysis approach by using the MaxQDA 2020 program. As a result of the research, the digital literacy levels of the teachers working in Turkey and those in the member countries of the European Union eTwinning network have been found to be at high levels, with no statistically significant difference between the gender variable and digital literacy.
Academic Literacy Skills of Instructors Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language

Abstract:Academic literacy covers reading, understanding, and evaluating academic studies that form the basis of science. It is one of the essential qualifications of the 21st century. In the education and training process, teachers are expected to have this skill in particular because teachers with academic qualifications integrate academic literacy skills with their professions according to the necessities of the time to improve themselves and present this to the learners during the teaching process. In this context, this study aims to determine Turkish instructors’ academic competence levels and examine them according to different variables. In the research using the survey model, «The Academic Literacy Scale» prepared by Demir and Deniz (2020) was used as a data collection tool. This scale, which consists of three factors: academic disposition, research process, and information use, consists of 28 items in total. The study determined that academic literacy skills were at a “high” level when the average score of the Turkish instructors from the overall scale was taken into account. When the academic literacy skills of Turkish instructors were examined in terms of various variables, no significant difference was found with the gender variable in the scale. Another divergence was found between the educational status variable and all the sub-dimensions of the scale, like research process, information use, and academic tendency. In addition, the graduated department variable differs with the research process and information use dimensions of the scale. There is also a significant difference between the variable of receiving education to increase academic literacy skills and the research process sub-dimension of the scale. Last but not least, a considerable distinction was discovered between all scale sub-dimensions and the overall scale in relation to the status of having knowledge of scientific research methodologies and having published academic work.

Abstract:Thanks to technological advances, migration, and globalization, English has become the language of internationalization. Therefore, many schools prioritized learning English to ensure and sustain international communication. However, in order to communicate well with individuals all around the world, bestowing English language learners with intercultural competence is also required in the teaching and learning of English. In Türkiye, one of the countries that host many immigrants, the experiences of foreign language teachers regarding intercultural issues might provide many insights into intercultural language learning and teaching. Therefore, this study aimed to expose EFL state schoolteachers’ perceptions and practices regarding intercultural language teaching and having foreign students in their classrooms. The methods that teachers adopted to promote intercultural competence in their classes were also explored. The semi-structured interviews were carried out with 30 English language teachers in middle and high schools in Türkiye. For data analysis, the computer program MAXQDA was benefited to categorize the codes and reveal the common themes. The findings revealed certain teacher practices that might contribute to students’ intercultural competence development and challenges experienced during that process. It can be concluded that teachers are in need of professional guidance and resources to further develop their learners’ intercultural competence.

Abstract:This study aimed to review the roles and practices of preschool teachers regarding reading and writing skills in preschool education. A sample of 234 preschool teachers working in Ankara participated to this study. Through employing complementary mixed method design, both qualitative and quantitative data were collected by using a descriptive data collection instrument, semi-structured interviews and observation form. Research findings indicate that preschool teachers mostly conduct teacher centered activities focused on concept learning for literacy development at desk activities. The preschool teachers stated that they usually distribute books and other printed materials to children; to read poems, fairy tales, stories and picture books aloud, and to examine those to give information about their features such as the back and front covers, the beginning and the end of the book. Although misconceptions and different activities were observed, it was found that teacher preferences were generally made in the light of the materials and attitudes of the institutions they worked in.

Abstract:Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) has been a common subject for different educational purposes from the planning of teaching process to testing and assessment practices. The term "TPACK-Practical" refers to a framework based on teachers' knowledge and experience that takes into account the theoretically described TPACK model's structure and the process of teaching practice. The present study aims to describe the nature of technology integration among Turkish EFL in-service instructors by exploring their skill levels to implement their TPACK-Practical in their classroom practices, and by explaining the relationships between these skill levels and some demographic variables. The research was conducted in the contexts of the Schools of Foreign Languages at various universities in Turkey at the end of the second term of 2022/2023 academic year. All EFL instructors teaching at the university level are the study's target population; however, the convenience sample chosen for the study on a voluntary basis only included 155 EFL instructors from these schools who responded to the questions on the data collection instrument (TPACK-Practical scale developed by Yeh et al., 2014). To comprehensively understand the participant profile and collect data to analyze the relations between the variables, the participants' demographic characteristics were also considered. The study has a quantitative research design that employs descriptive statistics to describe the demographic information and scale results; and correlation analysis, independent sample t-test, and ANOVA test to explain the relationships between the variables. Results of the study have revealed that EFL instructors generally use their TPACK-Practical skills in classroom applications at a "sufficient" level (at the lowest level in the Assessments area and at the highest level in the Subject Content area), and that demographic variables have no significant effect on their technology integration skills.

Abstract:The research aims to determine the factors affecting PISA 2018 reading skills using Random Forest and MARS methods and to compare their prediction abilities. This study used the information from 5713 students, 2838 (49.7%) male and 2875 (50.3%) female in the PISA 2018 Turkey. The analysis shows the MARS method performed better than the Random Forest method. The most significant factor affecting reading skills in Turkey is “the number of books in the house” in both methods. The variables the MARS method finds significant are “students' perception of difficulty, motivation for reading skills, father’s educational status, reading pleasure, bullying experience of the student, mother's educational status, attitude towards school, classical artifacts at home, supplementary school books at home, competition at school, competitive power, cooperation perception at school, reading frequency, self-efficacy, poetry books at home, anxiety about reading skills and teacher support.” However, the other variables had no relation to prediction. This study is expected to serve as an example of data mining application in educational research

Implementation of Dialogic Teaching in Turkish Lessons and Its Effect on Reading Comprehension

Abstract:This study has been shaped to cover two objectives. The first of these is to describe in detail the use of dialogic teaching in the field of Turkish reading comprehension, and the second is to determine the effect of dialogic teaching practices on reading comprehension success. The mixed-method design known as convergent design was used in this study. The qualitative research method known as basic qualitative research was preferred to answer the first research question. A quantitative approach was adopted to achieve the study's second objective. The quasi-experimental design was used at this stage. Thematic analysis was used to analyze and interpret qualitative data in the study. When the data obtained were analyzed, three themes were found: "Implementation in Terms of the Principles of Dialogical Teaching," "Problems Encountered by the Teacher in Practice," and "The Effect of Dialogical Teaching on Lessons." Mixed intra- and inter-group analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used in the analysis of the quantitative data collected pretest and post-test. The analysis results show that there is a difference between the effectiveness of being taught with dialogic teaching practices and being taught under the Turkish Lesson Curriculum.

Abstract:Liselere Geçiş Sınavı Türkçe sorularının niteliğinin PISA (Program International Student Assessment) okuma becerileri yeterlilik düzeyine göre belirlenmesi, sürdürülecek öğrenme ve öğretme süreci bakımından önemlidir. Bu çalışmada 2019 Liselere Geçiş Sınavı Türkçe sorularının PISA Okuma Becerileri Yeterlilik Düzeyleriyle hangi derecede örtüştüğünün belirlenmesi ve değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Bu amacı gerçekleştirmek üzere çalışma nitel araştırma desenlerinden betimsel tarama desenine göre tasarlanmıştır. Verilerin doküman incelemesi tekniği ile toplandığı bu çalışmada betimsel analize başvurulmuştur. Elde edilen veriler incelendiğinde, araştırmacı ve uzman görüşlerine göre; 2019 LGS Türkçe sorularında PISA Okuma Becerileri Yeterlilik Düzeylerinden 1c, 1b, 1a düzeyleri ile ilişkili sorulara az yer verildiği; 2. düzeyde 6 uzmanın 3 soruda; yine 2. düzeyde 5 uzmanın 7 soruda görüş birliğine vardıkları; 3. düzeyde 7 uzmanın 1 soruda; yine 3. düzeyde 5 uzmanın 2 soruda görüş birliğine vardıkları; 4. düzeyde uzmanların görüş birliğinin zayıf olduğu; 5. düzeyde 5 uzmanın 2 soruda görüş birliğine vardıkları; 6. düzeyde 6 uzmanın 1 soruda; yine 6. düzeyde 5 uzmanın 3 soruda görüş birliğine vardıkları görülmektedir. 2019 LGS Türkçe sorularının önceki yıllarda yapılan sınavlara göre PISA Okuma Becerileri bakımından daha fazla düzeyi kapsadığı, soruların PISA testlerine yakın sorulardan oluştuğu ve bu durumun öğrencilerin üst düzey okuma becerilerine hazırlanmaları bakımından katkı sağlayacağı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
Evaluation of High-School Entrance Exam Turkish Questions Based on PISA Reading Criteria

Abstract:Bu araştırmada LGS Türkçe sorularının PISA okuma ölçütlerine göre değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla araştırma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman incelemesine göre yürütülmüştür. Son dört yıldır ortaöğretime geçiş sınavında uygulanan LGS Türkçe soruları araştırmanın dokümanlarını oluşturmuştur. Elde edilen dokümanlar betimsel analiz yöntemine göre çözümlenmiştir. Sorular; betimsel analiz çerçevesinde PISA okuma bilişsel süreçleri ve yeterlik düzeyleri, metin şekli ve metin türüne göre incelenmiştir. Bu incelemeden elde edilen sonuçlara göre; uygulanan Türkçe soruların bilgileri bir araya getirme ve yorumlama bilişsel sürecinin ise 3 ve 4. yeterlik düzeyinde yoğunlaştığı belirlenmiştir. Sorularda en çok akıcı metin şekli kullanılmış fakat bağımsız metin şekline hiç yer verilmemiştir. Sorulardaki paragraflarda ağırlıklı olarak açıklama türü tercih edilmekle birlikte hikâye ve yönerge metin türlerine de sıklıkla yer verilmiştir. Bu sonuçlara göre LGS Türkçe sorularının sınırlı da olsa önceki ortaöğretim geçiş sınavlarına göre PISA okuma alanı ölçütlerine yaklaştığı yorumu yapılabilir. MEB’in ortaöğretim geçiş sınavlarında yapı ve bilişsel düzey açısından PISA ölçütlerine ulaşma çabası içinde olduğu söylenebilir. Araştırmacılar LGS sorularının üst düzey bilişsel süreçleri ölçmeye uygun yapılandırılmasını önermiştir.
Determining Digital Literacy Levels of Primary School Teachers

Abstract:The primary purpose of this research was to determine the digital literacy proficiency perceptions of primary school teachers working in Eskisehir and compare them based on certain variables. The mixed method was used as a research method; the data were collected using the Digital Literacy Assessment Scale developed by Acar (2015) for quantitative findings and in-depth interviews for qualitative results. The quantitative study group consisted of 733 primary school teachers. In the qualitative dimension of the research, there were data from 7 primary school teachers who agreed to fill out the structured interview form and then take part in an in-depth interview. Quantitative data of the study were analyzed using SPSS software. Qualitative data were analyzed with the descriptive analysis method and interpreted according to their relationship with the research questions. The result showed that the primary school teachers perceive themselves as highly sufficient in regard to the different competence areas of digital literacy and that they dominate these competence areas to a great extent. There were significant differences between the digital literacy levels of the primary school teachers and their age, gender, educational status, seniority in the profession, personal computer possession, constant internet connection, technologies/practices used in education, and technological education. However, the grade level taught was not an influential factor in their digital literacy levels. Moreover, in-service training should be organized to provide digital literacy, using Web 2.0 tools, and integrating technology into the classroom environment, starting with those who have more service than their years of seniority in the profession.
Financial literacy in Turkish preschool education

Abstract:Financial literacy is one of the basic skills of the 21st-century. It is an important skill to survive in the complex economies of the modern era. It is better to develop financial literacy skills at early ages. This study aims to examine the current state of FL education in preschool education in Turkey. For this aim, in this qualitative study, the Turkish preschool education curriculum was examined and the interviews were conducted with 20 preschool teachers constituting the study group. The data collected from document analysis were subjected to descriptive analysis and the data collected by interviews were subjected to content analysis. Results of the study show that Turkish preschool education is not supportive of financial literacy both in terms of curriculum and the teachers. For a strong foundation of FL in Turkey, the Turkish preschool education curriculum should be revised and the preschool teachers must be supported in terms of the development of FL skills at early childhood.
Access to information technology of households and secondary school students in Turkey

Abstract:The aim of the study was to investigate secondary school students’ and teachers’ access to information technologies in Turkey by making interregional comparisons. Document analysis of the qualitative research methods was employed to analyze the reports issued by the Turkish Ministry of National Education, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The results of the research revealed the importance of access to information and communication technologies for both students and teachers: 67.9% of the participating students were found to have Internet connection and 69.1% a computer in their homes, while 80.3% of the students were observed to use a computer outside the school, but 19.7% were not. The results also showed that 64.6% of the students have Internet connection in their classrooms, but 29.2% of these students do not use the Internet in the classroom, whereas 8.9% use it in the classroom all the time. The rate of students using a digital device for reading is 38.1%, while that of those not using one is 61.9%. Some 32.1% of secondary school students were revealed not to have Internet connection at home. Additionally, 77% of teachers were not trained in online teaching prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the findings, teachers can be suggested to develop projects – i.e., of TUBITAK, E-twinning, and Erasmus – which potentially encourage students to use information and communication technologies so that both teachers and students can benefit from them. It is also suggested that the Ministry of National Education should work on improving the information communication technology competencies of teachers and students. Besides, policies should be developed to eliminate regional differences in terms of access to digital resources and technology in terms of equal opportunities and opportunities.

Abstract:The integration of technology into education is a substantial issue for supporting and updating teachers’ professional development in today’s world and bringing up digitally literate generations and well-educated human capital. Studies have shown that technology integration in education is a complex and multidimensional issue. TPACK transcends the triad of core knowledge types and comprises the basis for the effective integration of technology into teaching. Therefore, the present study sought to understand the contribution of the technology attitudes and usage, digital literacy skills, and online reading comprehension strategies in pre-service early childhood teachers’ TPACK competencies. The participants in the study were 481 voluntary pre-service early childhood teachers (female=398, male=83). The data were collected as a cross-sectional survey. The study findings revealed that pre-service teachers’ TPACK competencies are associated with their technology attitude and usage, digital literacy skills, and online reading comprehension strategies, as well as that the variables explained 38% of the variance. However, pre-service teachers’ grade level and GPA are not related to their self-reported TPACK competencies. These findings can be seen as signals of the necessity for theoretical knowledge and practice to be developed in pre-service teachers’ technology integration in education.

The Impact of Close Reading Strategies on Individual Innovativeness and Life Skills: Preservice Teachers

Abstract:Reading is one of the fundamental tools for acquiring knowledge that has a direct effect on an individual's life. Many single and multiple strategies are used to improve reading comprehension, which is a strategic acquisition. (1) This study aims to investigate the effects of close reading strategies on the life skills and individual innovativeness of preservice Turkish language teachers. (2) The study group for this research consists of 31 preservice teachers studying in the Turkish Language Teaching department at a university in northern Türkiye. A sequential mixed-method design was used. In the quantitative aspect of the research, a pre-test and post-test experimental design without a control group was used, while in the qualitative aspect, a case study design was employed. Data were collected using the Life Skills Scale, Individual Innovativeness Scale, and semi-structured interview form. In analyzing the data obtained to examine the effect of the experimental process, a t-test for dependent groups was used, whereas data from the interviews were analyzed through content analysis (3-4). According to the results obtained from the research, the close reading strategy was determined to be a strategy that significantly improves the life skills and individual innovativeness of preservice Turkish language teachers.

Abstract:Teacher qualities play a key role in students’ achievement. In general, however, disadvantaged students may not have as much opportunity to benefit from teacher support as advantaged students. Therefore, this study aims to find out the relationship between the teacher qualities and the achievements of high and low socioeconomic level students in math and science literacy, and reading. Data were obtained from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 results. The study is a quantitative analysis using a relational model, with a sample consisting of 25% low socioeconomic level students and 25% high socioeconomic level students. The findings of this study indicate a more positive impact of adaptive instruction, teacher-directed instruction, and disciplinary climate on high socioeconomic students than on low socioeconomic students. However, the impact of teacher cognitive feedback on both student groups' achievement in all domains is negative.
Investigation of Burnout Levels and Reasons of Teachers Teaching Languages (Language Trainers) to Foreign Primary School Students

Abstract:the Integration of Syrian Children into the Turkish Education System (PIKTES). The study was conducted with mixed method. Quantitative data were collected through personal information form and Maslack Burnout Inventory (MBI), while qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Nonparametric tests were used to analyze quantitative data, and thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. The sample of the study consists of 301 Turkish language instructors from different cities and branches, who were determined by simple random sampling method, one of the probability sampling methods. According to the findings of the research, as a result of quantitative data analysis, it was determined that Turkish Language Teachers were moderately exhausted in the emotional exhaustion sub-dimension, highly exhausted in the depersonalization sub-dimension and low in the personal accomplishment sub-dimension. It was found that the burnout levels of Turkish language instructors differed significantly in the sub-dimensions of the scale according to their views on age, branch and workload, but did not differ significantly according to the number of students. As a result of the qualitative analyses, Turkish language instructors stated that the fact that they were working under the labor law within the scope of PIKTES negatively affected them emotionally and that there were cases where they received negative reactions from their colleagues and supervisors. It was concluded that working with foreign national students negatively affected them physically and emotionally and that PIKTES had a negative impact on their motivation due to working conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Nowadays, English has been considered as an International language or a Lingua Franca as a result of its widespread use among non-native speakers. English now is spoken by various people with different languages and diverse cultures. Thus, learners need to know the culture of different people of various countries. As stated by Cortazzi, M., & Jin, L. (1999). Cultural mirrors: Materials and methods in the EFL classroom. In E. Hinkel (Ed.), Culture in second language teaching (pp. 196–219). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, learners should have knowledge about source culture, target culture, and international culture. In this regard, teachers have a great responsibility in including cultural content in their English language classes. Therefore, the main purpose of this pilot study during Azimzadeh’s PhD journey (Azimzadeh, M. (Unpublished). Representation of cultural elements in EFL textbooks used in Iranian EFL high schools [PhD dissertation]. Adana, Turkey: Cukurova University) is to investigate Iranian and Turkish English language teachers’ views, perspectives, and experiences of teaching cultural content in their English language classes. This study was conducted as a mixed-method design. The data collection was done by using a questionnaire and an interview. The questionnaire which was used in this study adopted from CULTNET project (a network of researchers of inter-culture in foreign language education), Byram and Risager’s projects, and Cortazzi and Jin’s (1999) three cultural sources. Participants of this study were 16 teachers who were teaching English language in high schools in Iran and Turkey. The data collected from questionnaires and interviews were analysed by using a series of descriptive statistics and interviews were analysed by using thematic analysis (Creswell, J. W. (2003). Research design: Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method approaches . London: Sage Publications, Inc). The findings of this study have indicated that both Iranian and Turkish teachers were aware of the importance of teaching culture in their English language classes. They generally claimed that culture was important in language classes and the cultural subjects should be taught in English language classes.
