Abstract:Context: Improving the productivity of agro-ecosystems and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is essential for ensuring food security and mitigating global warming. However, frequent shallow tillage (ST) compromises crop productivity and resource utilization in China's paddy rice-upland crop rotation system, resulting in high GHG emissions and low ecological economic benefits. Objective: The development of feasible tillage practices that harmonize system productivity with environmental friendliness is essential for promoting green and sustainable agriculture in China's paddy rice-upland crop rotation system. Methods: We developed an alternative tillage method that combines no-till and moderate deep tillage at cropping system level. Through a long-term experiment conducted from 2017 to 2022, we examined three tillage strategies: conventional tillage with ST in both rapeseed and rice seasons (ST/ST), ST in the rapeseed season and notillage in the rice season (ST/NT), and moderate tillage in the rapeseed season and no-tillage in the rice season (MT/NT). The evaluation was performed under the typical paddy rice-upland crop rotation system in the Yangtze River Basin of China using life cycle assessment, considering system productivity, GHG emission, carbon footprint (CF), energy budget, and net ecological economic benefits (NEEB). Results: The result demonstrated significant increases in rapeseed yield (+21.8 %) and rice yield (+2.7 %) under MT/NT, with improved yield stability and higher yield increment over time compared to ST/ST. Furthermore, MT/NT significantly mitigated GHG emissions, with CH4 and N2O reductions of 19.7 % and 17.9 % in the rapeseed season, 31.3 % and 8.8 % in the rice season, respectively, contributing to a 25.0 % reduction in annual GHG emissions. Consequently, the CF of rapeseed and rice seasons decreased by 11.7 % and 27.7 %, respectively, leading to an annual CF decrease of 23.1 %. Additionally, MT/NT significantly reduced annual energy input and production input by 7.9 % and 6.2 %, respectively, while increasing annual net energy, energy use efficiency, and energy production by 17.4 %, 24.5 %, and 16.9 %, respectively, compared to ST/ST. Totally, MT/NT increased NEEB by 24.4 % relative to ST/ST. Conclusions and significance: These findings highlight the potential of moderate tillage as a clean and sustainable paddy rice-upland crop rotation production technology with broad application prospects for agricultural green production in China and beyond.
