Abstract:Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is a computational problem of constructing or updating a map of an unknown environment while tracking an agent's location within it. SLAM algorithms have been widely and successfully used in the fields of navigation, robotic mapping, environmental reconstruction, and virtual or augmented reality applications. They are tailored to available resources, not aiming at perfection but at operational compliance. They often require various optimizations. Recent advances in deep learning, mobile technology, 5G communications, and sensors are changing and pushing the limits of traditional SLAM algorithms to enable SLAM to become accurate, fast, and even intelligent.

Abstract:This paper is an overview to Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (V-SLAM). We discuss the basic definitions in the SLAM and vision system fields and provide a review of the state-of-the-art methods utilized for mobile robot’s vision and SLAM. This paper covers topics from the basic SLAM methods, vision sensors, machine vision algorithms for feature extraction and matching, Deep Learning (DL) methods and datasets for Visual Odometry (VO) and Loop Closure (LC) in V-SLAM applications. Several feature extraction and matching algorithms are simulated to show a better vision of feature-based techniques.

Abstract:Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology refers to the technology of self-localization and construction of environmental maps based on visual sensors. It plays an important role in the field of autonomous mobile robots and autonomous vehicle navigation. This article introduces the classic framework and basic theory of visual SLAM, as well as the common methods and research progress of each part, enumerates the landmark achievements in the visual SLAM research process, and introduces the latest ORB-SLAM3. Finally, the current problems and future research directions of visual SLAM are proposed.

Abstract:Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) techniques are widely researched, since they allow the simultaneous creation of a map and the sensors’ pose estimation in an unknown environment. Visual-based SLAM techniques play a significant role in this field, as they are based on a low-cost and small sensor system, which guarantees those advantages compared to other sensor-based SLAM techniques. The literature presents different approaches and methods to implement visual-based SLAM systems. Among this variety of publications, a beginner in this domain may find problems with identifying and analyzing the main algorithms and selecting the most appropriate one according to his or her project constraints. Therefore, we present the three main visual-based SLAM approaches (visual-only, visual-inertial, and RGB-D SLAM), providing a review of the main algorithms of each approach through diagrams and flowcharts, and highlighting the main advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Furthermore, we propose six criteria that ease the SLAM algorithm’s analysis and consider both the software and hardware levels. In addition, we present some major issues and future directions on visual-SLAM field, and provide a general overview of some of the existing benchmark datasets. This work aims to be the first step for those initiating a SLAM project to have a good perspective of SLAM techniques’ main elements and characteristics.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) is a technique that allows to seamlessly composite virtual objects or informa-tion into real scene. Compared to traditional text, images and videos, AR is a more effective and intuitive way for information presentation and has wide applications. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is a key fundamental technique for augmented reality, which provides the ability of self-localization in an unknown envi-ronment and mapping the 3D environment simultaneously. The localization and mapping enables fusion of virtual objects and real scenes in a geometrically consistent way. In this paper, we describe the basic principles of Visual SLAM, and introduce some state-of-the-art monocular SLAM methods with deep analysis and comparison. Fi-nally, we discuss some research tendency in recent years and make conclusions.

Abstract:Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is crucial for the progression of autonomous systems, including autonomous driving, augmented reality (AR), and robotics. Traditionally reliant on static environments, SLAM now confronts the complexities of the dynamic real world. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning are propelling SLAM toward the enhanced management of these dynamics. This survey presents a comprehensive analysis of visual SLAM in dynamic settings, an area significantly advanced by semantic understanding and sensor fusion technologies. It begins with an examination of geometric SLAM methods, addressing their efficacy in static contexts and limitations amidst dynamic changes. Subsequently, it focuses on semantic-based SLAM techniques, emphasizing their capacity for nuanced environmental representation and dynamic object management. In addition, the survey explores cutting-edge multisensor fusion strategies that substantially improve SLAM's robustness and precision in intricate environments. We offer a critical review of persistent challenges, including computational demands, sensor calibration, and the imperative for real-time processing. The survey concludes by identifying fertile areas for future research, highlighting the ongoing potential for SLAM technology innovation to adapt to the ever-changing environmental dynamics.

Abstract:Vision-based sensors have shown significant performance, accuracy, and efficiency gain in Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems in recent years. In this regard, Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (VSLAM) methods refer to the SLAM approaches that employ cameras for pose estimation and map generation. We can see many research works that demonstrated VSLAMs can outperform traditional methods, which rely only on a particular sensor, such as a Lidar, even with lower costs. VSLAM approaches utilize different camera types (e.g., monocular, stereo, and RGB-D), have been tested on various datasets (e.g., KITTI, TUM RGB-D, and EuRoC) and in dissimilar environments (e.g., indoors and outdoors), and employ multiple algorithms and methodologies to have a better understanding of the environment. The mentioned variations have made this topic popular for researchers and resulted in a wide range of VSLAMs methodologies. In this regard, the primary intent of this survey is to present the recent advances in VSLAM systems, along with discussing the existing challenges and trends. We have given an in-depth literature survey of forty-five impactful papers published in the domain of VSLAMs. We have classified these manuscripts by different characteristics, including the novelty domain, objectives, employed algorithms, and semantic level. We also discuss the current trends and future directions that may help researchers investigate them.

Abstract:Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (vSLAM) has achieved great progress in the computer vision and robotics communities, and has been successfully used in many fields such as autonomous robot navigation and AR/VR. However, vSLAM cannot achieve good localization in dynamic and complex environments. Numerous publications have reported that, by combining with the semantic information with vSLAM, the semantic vSLAM systems have the capability of solving the above problems in recent years. Nevertheless, there is no comprehensive survey about semantic vSLAM. To fill the gap, this paper first reviews the development of semantic vSLAM, explicitly focusing on its strengths and differences. Secondly, we explore three main issues of semantic vSLAM: the extraction and association of semantic information, the application of semantic information, and the advantages of semantic vSLAM. Then, we collect and analyze the current state-of-the-art SLAM datasets which have been widely used in semantic vSLAM systems. Finally, we discuss future directions that will provide a blueprint for the future development of semantic vSLAM.

Event-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping: A Comprehensive Survey

Abstract:In recent decades, visual simultaneous localization and mapping (vSLAM) has gained significant interest in both academia and industry. It estimates camera motion and reconstructs the environment concurrently using visual sensors on a moving robot. However, conventional cameras are limited by hardware, including motion blur and low dynamic range, which can negatively impact performance in challenging scenarios like high-speed motion and high dynamic range illumination. Recent studies have demonstrated that event cameras, a new type of bio-inspired visual sensor, offer advantages such as high temporal resolution, dynamic range, low power consumption, and low latency. This paper presents a timely and comprehensive review of event-based vSLAM algorithms that exploit the benefits of asynchronous and irregular event streams for localization and mapping tasks. The review covers the working principle of event cameras and various event representations for preprocessing event data. It also categorizes event-based vSLAM methods into four main categories: feature-based, direct, motion-compensation, and deep learning methods, with detailed discussions and practical guidance for each approach. Furthermore, the paper evaluates the state-of-the-art methods on various benchmarks, highlighting current challenges and future opportunities in this emerging research area. Abstract:Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (VSLAM) has attracted considerable attention in recent years. This task involves using visual sensors to localize a robot while simultaneously constructing an internal representation of its environment. Traditional VSLAM methods involve the laborious hand-crafted design of visual features and complex geometric models. As a result, they are generally limited to simple environments with easily identifiable textures. Recent years, however, have witnessed the development of deep learning techniques for VSLAM. This is primarily due to their capability of modeling complex features of the environment in a completely data-driven manner. In this paper, we present a survey of relevant deep learning-based VSLAM methods and suggest a new taxonomy for the subject. We also discuss some of the current challenges and possible directions for this field of study.

Abstract:While, many of the machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) methods that are now commonly being used to answer questions across scientific disciplines have been around for some time, their widespread application to spatial data and spatially-explicit research questions is much more recent. The large number of excellent review papers and special issues in leading journals published in the last few years—which this issue of the Journal of Geographical Systems takes its place among—attest to the growing interest in the application and development of cutting-edge methodologies for spatial data. This editorial begins by proposing a new inclusive definition for spatial ML, then provides a brief overview of each of the six papers in this special issue, and ends with a suggestion of several possible directions for future research in spatial ML.

Abstract:With the significant increase in demand for artificial intelligence, environmental map reconstruction has become a research hotspot for obstacle avoidance navigation, unmanned operations, and virtual reality. The quality of the map plays a vital role in positioning, path planning, and obstacle avoidance. This review starts with the development of SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) and proceeds to a review of V-SLAM (Visual-SLAM) from its proposal to the present, with a summary of its historical milestones. In this context, the five parts of the classic V-SLAM framework-visual sensor, visual odometer, backend optimization, loop detection, and mapping-are explained separately. Meanwhile, the details of the latest methods are shown; VI-SLAM (Visual inertial SLAM) is reviewed and extended. The four critical techniques of V-SLAM and its technical difficulties are summarized as feature detection and matching, selection of keyframes, uncertainty technology, and expression of maps. Finally, the development direction and needs of the V-SLAM field are proposed.
SLAM for Visually Impaired People: a Survey

Abstract:In recent decades, several assistive technologies have been developed to improve the ability of blind and visually impaired individuals to navigate independently and safely. At the same time, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) techniques have become sufficiently robust and efficient to be adopted in developing these assistive technologies. We present the first systematic literature review of 54 recent studies on SLAM-based solutions for blind and visually impaired people, focusing on literature published from 2017 onward. This review explores various localization and mapping techniques employed in this context. We systematically identified and categorized diverse SLAM approaches and analyzed their localization and mapping techniques, sensor types, computing resources, and machine-learning methods. We discuss the advantages and limitations of these techniques for blind and visually impaired navigation. Moreover, we examine the major challenges described across studies, including practical considerations that affect usability and adoption. Our analysis also evaluates the effectiveness of these SLAM-based solutions in real-world scenarios and user satisfaction, providing insights into their practical impact on BVI mobility. The insights derived from this review identify critical gaps and opportunities for future research activities, particularly in addressing the challenges presented by dynamic and complex environments. We explain how SLAM technology offers the potential to improve the ability of visually impaired individuals to navigate effectively. Finally, we present future opportunities and challenges in this domain.

Abstract:Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) consists of the immediate construction of the environment and the state estimation of the robot in it, while Visual SLAM (VSLAM) is the use of cameras and other visual sensors for SLAM. VSLAM has become an important part of mobile robots, drones, unmanned vehicles and other unmanned systems in unknown environments to achieve full-scale navigation and environmental perception. First, the principle of architecture, the mathematical models, the current research status and the algorithms of each part have been reviewed. Then, the research hotspots and current facing challenges on VSLAM were summarized from three parts: (i) VSLAM and deep learning; (ii) data processing of multi-sensor; (iii) VSLAM in visual/inertial navigation. Moreover, the research trend of VSLAM were further analyzed, including (i) deep learning and deep estimation, (ii) active and multi-robot VSLAM and (iii) semantic VSLAM. At last, the future development of VSLAM was discussed, which may provide a certain guiding significance for researchers in this area.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to provide a better understanding of the challenges and potential solutions in Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), laying the foundation for its applications in autonomous navigation, intelligent driving and other related domains. Design/methodology/approach In analyzing the latest research, the review presents representative achievements, including methods to enhance efficiency, robustness and accuracy. Additionally, the review provides insights into the future development direction of Visual SLAM, emphasizing the importance of improving system robustness when dealing with dynamic environments. The research methodology of this review involves a literature review and data set analysis, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the current status and prospects in the field of Visual SLAM. Findings This review aims to comprehensively evaluate the latest advances and challenges in the field of Visual SLAM. By collecting and analyzing relevant research papers and classic data sets, it reveals the current issues faced by Visual SLAM in complex environments and proposes potential solutions. The review begins by introducing the fundamental principles and application areas of Visual SLAM, followed by an in-depth discussion of the challenges encountered when dealing with dynamic objects and complex environments. To enhance the performance of SLAM algorithms, researchers have made progress by integrating different sensor modalities, improving feature extraction and incorporating deep learning techniques, driving advancements in the field. Originality/value To the best of the authors' knowledge, the originality of this review lies in its in-depth analysis of current research hotspots and predictions for future development, providing valuable references for researchers in this field.

Abstract:Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) consists in the concurrent construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey the current state of SLAM and consider future directions. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees, active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific investigation. The paper also contains the authors take on two questions that often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and Is SLAM solved?

Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:Autonomous driving vehicles require both a precise localization and mapping solution in different driving environment. In this context, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technology is a well-study settlement. Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and camera sensors are commonly used for localization and perception. However, through ten or twenty years of evolution, the LIDAR-SLAM method does not seem to have changed much. Compared with the LIDAR based schemes, the visual SLAM has a strong scene recognition ability with the advantages of low cost and easy installation. Indeed, people are trying to replace LIDAR sensors with camera only, or integrating other sensors on the basis of camera in the field of autonomous driving. Based on the current research situation of visual SLAM, this review covers the visual SLAM technologies. In particular, we firstly illustrated the typical structure of visual SLAM. Secondly, the state-of-the-art studies of visual and visual-based (i.e. visual-inertial, visual-LIDAR, visual-LIDAR-IMU) SLAM are completely reviewed, as well the positioning accuracy of our previous work are compared with the well-known frameworks on the public datasets. Finally, the key issues and the future development trend of visual SLAM technologies for autonomous driving vehicles applications are discussed.
