Abstract:A report of a girl with an aniridia-Wilms tumor syndrome associated with an interstitial deletion of the short arm of one chromosome 11 is presented. the patient had bilateral aniridia, a congenital nuclear cataract on the right, and a congenital posterior polar cataract on the left. Associated were mental retardation and a peculiar face. She died after a left-sided nephrectomy was performed because of a Wilms tumor. Chromosomal analysis was not performed until after the girl's death. A chromosome preparation obtained from fibroblasts grown from a postmortem skin biopsy revealed an 11p deletion. Two forms of congenital aniridia are discussed, the autosomal dominant inherited and the sporadic form. Chromosomal analysis should be performed in all sporadic cases of aniridia, especially when associated with mental retardation, additional malformations, or Wilms tumor.
