Abstract:Mind understanding allows for the adaptation of expressive language to a listener and is a core element when communicating new information to a communication partner. There is limited knowledge about the relationship between aided language and mind understanding. This study investigates this relationship using a communication task. The participants were 71 aided communicators using graphic symbols or spelling for expression (38/33 girls/boys) and a reference group of 40 speaking children (21/19 girls/boys), aged 5;0-15;11 years. The task was to describe, but not name, drawings to a communication partner. The partner could not see the drawing and had to infer what was depicted from the child's explanation. Dyads with aided communicators solved fewer items than reference dyads (64% vs 93%). The aided spellers presented more precise details than the symbol users (46% vs 38%). In the aided group, number of correct items correlated with verbal comprehension and age.
In search of language development for students who are hard of hearing: measuring the effectiveness of assistive technologies through teaching practices

Abstract:This study evaluated the effectiveness of assistive technologies (ATs) through e-books in teaching practices aimed at enhancing language development among hard-of-hearing (HH) students. The study implemented an intervention consisting of four language aspects (phonemic awareness, writing, vocabulary, and reading comprehension) wherein the ATs' impacts on language development were assessed. Eighty HH students were divided into control and treatment groups and evaluated through pre- and post-tests. The results showed that the intervention led to significant changes in all four language aspects in both groups. Interestingly, the effect sizes were moderate in the control group but large in the treatment group, thus showing the efficiency and effectiveness of the developed intervention. These findings constitute useful evidence-based guidelines for implementing ATs to enhance teaching practices in the HH language setting.
[When cochlear implants came to Denmark and the deaf began to hear]

Abstract:For several hundreds years, deafness in humans and deaf-mute humans has been a challenge to doctors and other therapists. During the last 50 years, it has become possible to treat deaf people. The reasons for this success in treatment and the introduction of the treatment in Denmark are the topics of this text. To make deaf people hear, patients were treated with electricity for more than two hundred years,in Denmark as well as other countries. This development depended on many important factors for a positive result of the treatment. The first operation of a deaf patient in Denmark was performed in Odense. Some years later the treatment began at Gentofte Hospital and later at Aarhus City Hospital. The start was slow, to some extent because of financial circumstances but also because the necessary equipment was not fully developed. There were also difficulties with selection of the most suited patients, training of patients, resistance against treatment from organisations of the deaf and from conventional teachers of the deaf. The problems were solved over a period of some years, and the population could soon see and meet patients as celebrities, i.e., previously deaf persons who could now use a telephone. More than 600 deaf people have now been operated in Denmark. The term deafness has changed its meaning, and probably there will no new cases of the deaf-mute in the future.

Abstract:As a deaf mute, because mute and more often than not deaf, and then deaf and dumb, because deaf and therefore dumb, the deaf child inevitably deprived of spontaneous speech was considered up to the end of the middle ages as having no possibility of language or of thought, left to the sorry fate of being part of a sporadic population expressing themselves by gestures, a language bereft of past and future, understood only by a few members of the family or occasionally deaf neighbours. During the Renaissance, it appeared that with specific education the deaf child could talk, have a language, and therefore thought. Due merit must be given to 16th century Spain. In the 18th century, France discovered that gestures can also be a language, collated and constructed thanks to the collaboration of the partially deaf. From then on, gestual language flourished in America whilst the rest of Europe continued to prefer oral rehabilitation. With current medical progress, the deaf are no longer deaf. Deafness in the child still exists, however, but there are no longer any mutes. The deaf child can achieve access to language, which may be oral or gestual. The choice between these two modes of expression is still very tropical.
Deaf Children Reading Fables: Using ASL Summaries to Improve Reading Comprehension

Abstract:This study was a cooperative effort of two university-based reading educators and a reading teacher-librarian who is deaf. An intervention technique was designed based on studies emphasizing the importance of using American Sign Language (ASL) to build deaf children's background knowledge before they read materials that support the learning of English. The teacher used the ASL summary technique; that is, she signed a summary of a fable in ASL without giving the moral lesson before having the students read the fable in printed English. "Retelling scores" were computed for seven deaf elementary school students who read some fables with the ASL intervention and read other fables without the intervention. The students' responses in telling the moral lesson of each fable were also scored. The data showed that the ASL summary technique increased the quantity and quality of the retelling scores; it also improved deaf readers' comprehension of the moral lessons of the fables. A description of the ASL summary technique and a discussion of its implications for teachers are provided.

Abstract:Decades of research have demonstrated that deaf children generally lag behind hearing peers in terms of academic achievement, and that lags in some areas may never be overcome fully. Hundreds of research and intervention studies have been aimed at improving the situation, but they have resulted in only limited progress. This paper examines cognitive functioning among deaf learners, describing and integrating research that indicates them to differ significantly from hearing learners in ways likely to affect learning. Findings demonstrating that deaf and hearing children differ in domains such as visual-spatial processing, memory, and executive functioning provide directions for both future research and practice. First, however, teachers and other professionals need to recognize that deaf children are not simply hearing children who cannot hear. Only then can teaching methods and materials fully accommodate their strengths and needs.
Phonological awareness: one key to the reading proficiency of deaf children

Abstract:A case is made for the importance of children's development of phonological awareness--whether they are hearing or deaf--if they are to reach their potential as readers. Relevant terms are defined (i.e., phonological awareness, phonological processes, and phonics) to assist the reader with the research review, which covers (a) the typical stages in the acquisition of phonological awareness and (b) phonological awareness and deafness. Suggestions for phonological awareness assessment are offered, along with the recommendation that the use of recently developed formal and informal measures of phonological awareness might facilitate the setting of goals and objectives when deaf educators or speech-language pathologists are evaluating the skills of deaf students and planning instruction for these students. Such tools yield information about skills that have been shown to correlate with literacy attainment and that are not commonly addressed by deaf educators or speech-language pathologists serving deaf students. Finally, research concerning the facilitation of phonological awareness and its application is explained.
The effect of an interactive experience on music majors' perceptions of music for deaf students

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an interactive experience on music majors' perceptions of music experiences for deaf students. Twenty-three members of a pre-existing college brass ensemble served as subjects, and a 1-hour interactive concert/presentation for 10 deaf elementary children served as the independent variable. The interactive experience was designed to provide social, musical, and educational interactions between the college musicians and the deaf children. A pretest-posttest design was utilized, and the dependent variable was a questionnaire designed to examine the subjects' perceptions regarding music for deaf students, including how prepared, comfortable, and willing they felt to provide music experiences for deaf students. Results reveal that this single interactive experience had a significant effect on the subjects' perceptions of the value of music in the education of deaf children (p <.05). Although the pretest and posttest scores indicate that the subjects felt apprehensive about their preparedness to work with deaf students, the subjects felt significantly more positive about their preparedness following the interaction (p <.001). An analysis of open comments indicates that the subjects perceived the experience as (a) very positive, (b) increasing their knowledge and perception of music for deaf students, (c) helping them better relate to the deaf population, (d) promoting interest in similar experiences and in gaining more information, and (e) eliciting a feeling that future teachers should have similar experiences. Quotes from the subjects are given, and implications for teacher training/music therapy programs are discussed.
Visual Cues Contribute Differentially to Audiovisual Perception of Consonants and Vowels in Improving Recognition and Reducing Cognitive Demands in Listeners With Hearing Impairment Using Hearing Aids

Abstract:Purpose: We sought to examine the contribution of visual cues in audiovisual identification of consonants and vowels-in terms of isolation points (the shortest time required for correct identification of a speech stimulus), accuracy, and cognitive demands-in listeners with hearing impairment using hearing aids. Method: The study comprised 199 participants with hearing impairment (mean age = 61.1 years) with bilateral, symmetrical, mild-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss. Gated Swedish consonants and vowels were presented aurally and audiovisually to participants. Linear amplification was adjusted for each participant to assure audibility. The reading span test was used to measure participants' working memory capacity. Results: Audiovisual presentation resulted in shortened isolation points and improved accuracy for consonants and vowels relative to auditory-only presentation. This benefit was more evident for consonants than vowels. In addition, correlations and subsequent analyses revealed that listeners with higher scores on the reading span test identified both consonants and vowels earlier in auditory-only presentation, but only vowels (not consonants) in audiovisual presentation. Conclusion: Consonants and vowels differed in terms of the benefits afforded from their associative visual cues, as indicated by the degree of audiovisual benefit and reduction in cognitive demands linked to the identification of consonants and vowels presented audiovisually.
Validating a Method to Assess Lipreading, Audiovisual Gain, and Integration During Speech Reception With Cochlear-Implanted and Normal-Hearing Subjects Using a Talking Head

Abstract:Objectives: Watching a talker’s mouth is beneficial for speech reception (SR) in many communication settings, especially in noise and when hearing is impaired. Measures for audiovisual (AV) SR can be valuable in the framework of diagnosing or treating hearing disorders. This study addresses the lack of standardized methods in many languages for assessing lipreading, AV gain, and integration. A new method is validated that supplements a German speech audiometric test with visualizations of the synthetic articulation of an avatar that was used, for it is feasible to lip-sync auditory speech in a highly standardized way. Three hypotheses were formed according to the literature on AV SR that used live or filmed talkers. It was tested whether respective effects could be reproduced with synthetic articulation: (1) cochlear implant (CI) users have a higher visual-only SR than normal-hearing (NH) individuals, and younger individuals obtain higher lipreading scores than older persons. (2) Both CI and NH gain from presenting AV over unimodal (auditory or visual) sentences in noise. (3) Both CI and NH listeners efficiently integrate complementary auditory and visual speech features. Design: In a controlled, cross-sectional study with 14 experienced CI users (mean age 47.4) and 14 NH individuals (mean age 46.3, similar broad age distribution), lipreading, AV gain, and integration of a German matrix sentence test were assessed. Visual speech stimuli were synthesized by the articulation of the Talking Head system “MASSY” (Modular Audiovisual Speech Synthesizer), which displayed standardized articulation with respect to the visibility of German phones. Results: In line with the hypotheses and previous literature, CI users had a higher mean visual-only SR than NH individuals (CI, 38%; NH, 12%; p < 0.001). Age was correlated with lipreading such that within each group, younger individuals obtained higher visual-only scores than older persons (rCI = −0.54; p = 0.046; rNH = −0.78; p < 0.001). Both CI and NH benefitted by AV over unimodal speech as indexed by calculations of the measures visual enhancement and auditory enhancement (each p < 0.001). Both groups efficiently integrated complementary auditory and visual speech features as indexed by calculations of the measure integration enhancement (each p < 0.005). Conclusions: Given the good agreement between results from literature and the outcome of supplementing an existing validated auditory test with synthetic visual cues, the introduced method can be considered an interesting candidate for clinical and scientific applications to assess measures important for AV SR in a standardized manner. This could be beneficial for optimizing the diagnosis and treatment of individual listening and communication disorders, such as cochlear implantation.

Abstract:Feel the noiseWhen we listen to human speech we use a combination of the senses: the ears, obviously, and the eyes to see how a speaker's face changes the perception of consonant sounds. Experiments seeking to add the sense of touch to the mix have until now been inconclusive. Many languages use an expulsion of air to change vowel or consonant sounds — in English to distinguish a sound like 'da' from the microphone-popping 'pa'. Bryan Gick and Donald Derrick take that 'puff of air' as the starting point for a study of whether the sense of touch can contribute to what we 'hear'. They applied small, inaudible air puffs to the skin of volunteers who were simultaneously listening to a series of consonant sounds. Air puffs aimed at either the hand or neck made it more likely that aspirated sounds would be heard. So 'b' was misheard as 'p' following an air puff. This work could prove useful in the future development of audio and telecommunication aids for the hearing impaired.

Abstract:Mnemonic devices are memory aids that make it easier to recall information and are widely used by students studying anatomy and physiology. Simple musical instruments and toys can serve as mnemonic devices for students learning the functional anatomy of the larynx: balloons can help learners understand and recall how sound is produced; tuning pegs can help learners understand how tension affects vocal pitch; fingers on a fretboard can help learners understand how pitch is further modulated; and a common coach's whistle can demonstrate how vocal volume is controlled. Using instruments and toys engages adult learners and helps them connect complex laryngeal anatomy with previous experiences.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Musical instruments and toys can be used as mnemonic devices to help students recall and understand the functional anatomy of voice production. The mnemonics can be implemented in a variety of classrooms and are flexible and engaging.

Abstract:Abstract One main incentive for supplying hearing impaired children with a cochlear implant is the prospect of oral language acquisition. Only scarce knowledge exists, however, of what congenitally deaf children actually perceive when receiving their first auditory input, and specifically what speech-relevant features they are able to extract from the new modality. We therefore presented congenitally deaf infants and young children implanted before the age of 4 years with an oddball paradigm of long and short vowel variants of the syllable /ba/. We measured the EEG in regular intervals to study their discriminative ability starting with the first activation of the implant up to 8 months later. We were thus able to time-track the emerging ability to differentiate one of the most basic linguistic features that bears semantic differentiation and helps in word segmentation, namely, vowel length. Results show that already 2 months after the first auditory input, but not directly after implant activation, these early implanted children differentiate between long and short syllables. Surprisingly, after only 4 months of hearing experience, the ERPs have reached the same properties as those of the normal hearing control group, demonstrating the plasticity of the brain with respect to the new modality. We thus show that a simple but linguistically highly relevant feature such as vowel length reaches age-appropriate electrophysiological levels as fast as 4 months after the first acoustic stimulation, providing an important basis for further language acquisition.

Abstract:Behavioral and neuroscientific studies have shown that watching a speaker’s lip movements aids speech comprehension. Intriguingly, even when videos of speakers are presented silently, various cortical regions track auditory features, such as the envelope. Recently, we demonstrated that eye movements track low-level acoustic information when attentively listening to speech. In this study we investigated whether ocular speech tracking occurs during visual speech and how it influences cortical silent speech tracking. Furthermore, we compared the data of hearing individuals with congenitally deaf individuals, and those with acquired deafness or hearing loss (DHH; Deaf or hard of hearing) to assess how auditory deprivation (early vs. late onset) affects neural and ocular speech tracking during silent lip-reading. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we examined ocular and neural speech tracking of 75 participants observing silent videos of a speaker played forward and backward. Our main finding is a clear ocular unheard speech tracking effect with a dominance <1 Hz, which was not present for the lip movements. Similarly, we observed a <=1.3 Hz effect of neural unheard speech tracking in temporal regions for hearing participants. Importantly, neural tracking was not directly linked to ocular tracking in this study. Strikingly, across different listening groups, deaf participants with auditory listening experience showed higher ocular speech tracking than hearing participants, while no ocular speech tracking effect was revealed for congenitally deaf participants in a very small sample. This study extends our previous work by demonstrating the involvement of eye movements in speech processing, even in the absence of acoustic input.

Coining Tactile Signs: A Guided Experience of Tactile Communication for People with Acquired Deafblindness and their Communication Partners

Abstract:Introduction: When hearing and vision are affected simultaneously, communication can be challenging (Nordic Welfare Centre, 2016). However, undertaking a bodily – tactile modality of communication can benefit the interactions for people with acquired deafblindness and their partners (Lahtinen, 2008). This research aimed to understand the process of creating tactile communication. It focused on analysing the process of coining tactile signs for specific objects. Method: A qualitative and descriptive case study was conducted, utilizing video-analysis and questionnaires. An intervention was based on a learning guide and inspired by the project Landscape of Touch (Tactile Communication Group DbI, 2012). Different activities of tactile communication, progressive in complexity, led the participants to a final experience of coining (the creation of) their own tactile signs. Results: The results showed three blended stages in the coining process, tactile exploration, information selection and negotiation of meaning. The coined signs were compared with their visual pair of NZSL [New Zealand Sign Language] finding several similarities in their components. This research had an expanding effect on the participant’s perspective of tactile communication and the possibility of integrating it to their daily life. Conclusion and Discussion: Further research on sign coining and tactile elements in the communication, including individual experiences, is essential for developing good practices for educators and support service providers in this field. It is recommended to use video analysis as a tool to observe the details in the handmovements. Some limitations in this study were the application in a case study, therefore no generalisations can be made, and the access to technology limited the possibilities for other possible participants.
The comprehension of metaphorical uses of English by deaf children

Abstract:Researchers and educators of the deaf often suggest that deaf children have a particular problem in understanding metaphorical uses of natural language. This paper reports two experiments whose results are incompatible with this view. Profoundly deaf children were presented with several short stories and were instructed to select (from a set of 4 alternatives) the sentence they thought best completed the story. In Experiment 1 deaf children ranging in age from 9 to 17 years clearly demonstrated their ability to understand novel metaphorical uses of English. In Experiment 2, 14-year-old deaf children who were given feedback on four initial practice items selected the correct metaphorical alternative significantly more often than those who saw no practice items. The conclusion is that deaf children probably do not suffer from some special deficiency uniquely associated with metaphor.

Abstract:Seeing the visual articulatory movements of a speaker, while hearing their voice, helps with understanding what is said. This multisensory enhancement is particularly evident in noisy listening conditions. Multisensory enhancement also occurs even in auditory-only conditions: auditory-only speech and voice-identity recognition is superior for speakers previously learned with their face, compared to control learning; an effect termed the "face-benefit". Whether the face-benefit can assist in maintaining robust perception in increasingly noisy listening conditions, similar to concurrent multisensory input, is unknown. Here, in two behavioural experiments, we examined this hypothesis. In each experiment, participants learned a series of speakers' voices together with their dynamic face, or control image. Following learning, participants listened to auditory-only sentences spoken by the same speakers and recognised the content of the sentences (speech recognition, Experiment 1) or the voice-identity of the speaker (Experiment 2) in increasing levels of auditory noise. For speech recognition, we observed that 14/30 participants (47%) showed a face-benefit. While 19/25 participants (76%) showed a face-benefit for voice-identity recognition. For those participants who demonstrated a face-benefit, the face-benefit increased with auditory noise levels. Taken together, the results support an audio-visual model of auditory communication and suggest that the brain can develop a flexible system in which learned facial characteristics are used to deal with varying auditory uncertainty.
The English-Language and Reading Achievement of a Cohort of Deaf Students Speaking and Signing Standard English: A Preliminary Study

Abstract:Research suggests that English-language proficiency is critical if students who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) are to read as their hearing peers. One explanation for the traditionally reported reading achievement plateau when students are D/HH is the inability to hear insalient English morphology. Signing Exact English can provide visual access to these features. The authors investigated the English morphological and syntactic abilities and reading achievement of elementary and middle school students at a school using simultaneously spoken and signed Standard American English facilitated by intentional listening, speech, and language strategies. A developmental trend (and no plateau) in language and reading achievement was detected; most participants demonstrated average or above-average English. Morphological awareness was prerequisite to high test scores; speech was not significantly correlated with achievement; language proficiency, measured by the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals-4 (Semel, Wiig, & Secord, 2003), predicted reading achievement.
Benefit of Hearing-Aid Amplification and Signal Enhancement for Speech Reception in Complex Listening Situations

Abstract:A major goal of hearing-device provision is to improve communication in daily life. However, there is still a large gap between the user's daily-life aided listening experience and hearing-aid benefit as assessed with established speech reception measurements in the laboratory and clinical practice. For a more realistic assessment, hearing-aid provision needs to be tested in suitable acoustic environments. In this study, using virtual acoustics, we developed complex acoustic scenarios to measure speech-intelligibility and listening-effort benefit obtained from hearing-aid amplification and signal enhancement strategies. Measurements were conducted using the participants' own devices and a research hearing aid, the Portable Hearing Laboratory (PHL). On the PHL, in addition to amplification, a monaural and a binaural directional filter, as well as a spectral filter were employed. We assessed the benefit from different signal enhancement strategies at the group and the individual level. At the group level, signal enhancement including directional filtering provided a higher hearing-aid benefit in challenging acoustic scenarios in terms of speech intelligibility compared to amplification alone or combined with spectral filtering. However, no difference between monaural and binaural signal enhancement occurred. On an individual level, we found large differences in hearing-aid benefit between participants. While some benefitted from signal-enhancement algorithms, others benefitted from amplification alone, but additional signal enhancement had a detrimental effect. This shows the importance of an individual selection of signal enhancement strategies as a part of the hearing-aid fitting process.
Foreign Language Learning Characteristics of Deaf and Severely Hard‐of‐Hearing Students

Abstract:<p>The aim of this study was to investigate deaf and severely hard‐of‐hearing students' foreign language learning characteristics. In order to provide a better understanding of the challenges this group of learners face, a mixed methods study was designed including a questionnaire survey to provide generalizable results for our context and an interview study to get a deeper understanding of the issue from the insiders' perspective as well. Data was collected in three European countries with piloted and barrier‐free instruments. In order to investigate their foreign language learning processes, deaf and severely hard‐of‐hearing students' motivation, beliefs, and strategies were measured and analyzed. Our results indicate that deaf and severely hard‐of‐hearing students' foreign language learning experiences are fraught with challenges and setbacks despite their motivation and eagerness to learn foreign languages. To overcome these difficulties motivating and effective learning environments have to be created where the use of the national sign language contributes to the efficiency of teaching. Furthermore, teaching should include the presentation of effective learning strategies as well as the introduction of autonomous ways of learning.</p>
