Abstract:The current study demonstrates the media practices which represent the feminine gender and how it is reflected through the television series that is viewed by the society in particular. Particularly, the investigation focuses on understanding how discourse is used in construction of the Pakistani females’ image in television. This research uses the theoretical perspective of feminist media practices for the qualitative textual analysis of the drama series. A total of 10 scenes from four different drama series of Pakistan were selected. The dialogues were transcribed and coded into categories, based on the framework. The findings show that female characters are marked negative when they do not conform to the conventional roles; contrastingly, being submissive to husband and conforming to societal norms are key aspects of a positive female character. Findings also suggest that the boundaries demarcated for females in the society, conform to the patterns shown on television. Majority of the female characters with subservient traits were perceived as positive, for instance, they were appreciated for obeying parents, and expected to compromise. On the contrary, the females who did not follow these norms were marked as negative characters. The study found a newer category of neutral depiction of working women in the dramas; these women were shown as independent and at the same time, were considerate of cultural norms. Thus, the results conclude that Pakistani television dramas portray peculiar cultural and social ideologies for feminine gender through discourse.
