Abstract:This article examines the development of tourism in Turkey. It focuses mainly on the relationship between the country’s shifting geopolitical alignment and the recent changes in the countries of origin of its international tourist clientele. The study outlines geopolitical aspects of tourism, highlighting how it can be part of government strategies to reflect shifting geopolitical alliances and relationships. In the case of Turkey, there has been something of a move away from Europe and NATO towards enhanced relations with Russia and China. The article draws on an analysis of official statistics, interviews with key stakeholders in the Turkish tourism sector and direct field observations at tourist sites.

Abstract:This study aims to empirically test a model linking involvement, experience quality, satisfaction, and recommendation intention. The study also analyzes the mediating effect of experience quality and satisfaction on the relationship between involvement and recommendation intention in a cultural tourism destination context. Data were collected from tourists using a survey from a historical area of Istanbul, the Sultanahmet district. The results reveal that experience quality and satisfaction mediate the relationship between involvement and recommendation intention in the cultural tourism context. This study discusses the theoretical and management implications of these findings. The suggested strategies would diversify and boost the Istanbul tourism industry by targeting different tourist groups.

Destination Image of Antalya from the Perspectives of Tourists Staying in Hospitality Establishments with the Concept of Halal Tourism

Abstract:The study's primary purpose is to reveal the destination image evaluations of Antalya by the tourists staying with the concept of halal tourism with the proposed model. In this context, the study was designed as survey-based quantitative research and was carried out on 660 tourists selected by a simple random sampling method in 6 hotels in Antalya destination. As a result of the structural equation modelling analyses, it was determined that the cognitive images of the tourists staying in hotels with the concept of halal tourism affected tourist satisfaction positively. Their effective images did not significantly impact tourist satisfaction, and that their effective images affected intention to recommend positively while their cognitive images influenced it negatively. Besides, it was found that both cognitive and affective image dimensions did not significantly affect intention to revisit. Furthermore, the results of the analyses indicated that cognitive images of the tourists positively affected their affective images. Tourist satisfaction had a positive impact on their intention to recommend and intention to revisit. According to the research results, it was determined that the cognitive image is a key element for the tourists staying in the halal concept to evaluate Antalya's destination. In this regard, it is evident that public policymakers and hotel managers should formulate their policies and strategies, taking into account the results of the research, as well as implementing policies and practices aimed at increasing the affective evaluations of tourists, which are more important than the cognitive evaluations of tourists in Antalya destination. Finally, it is believed that the study will reveal important practical implications in the context of developing policies and strategies for the managers of the hotels with the concept of halal tourism and for local authorities in the destination and revealing the relationship between destination image, tourist satisfaction and behavioural intentions.

Abstract:Growing international trade and technological progress taking place through the globalization process have increased the number of congress and conference events. Congress tourism has grown rapidly in Turkey over time. Antalya has an essential role in congress tourism. Within the scope of the study, the hotel selection factors, and the services provided to the travel agencies in congress organizations in Antalya were evaluated. For this purpose, travel agencies operating in Antalya were administered a questionnaire and the results were interpreted. The three most important factors affecting the hotel selection of congress organizers include hotel price, quick response to solve organizational problems, and hotel image. In addition to all these, opportunities, strengths, weaknesses, and threats were analyzed using SWOT analysis.

Abstract:The main object of this study is to present current situation and to analyze managerial conditions of yacht-tourism in Turkey by conducting a meta-analysis and qualitative view. Yacht tourism one of the most developing niche tourism sectors around the world. As one of most important tourism forms by creating higher revenues, providing sustainable development opportunities and ensuring product differentiation, yacht-tourism may be evaluated more strategic options for Turkish tourism. Turkey has greater potentials that can be used in yacht tourism as long coastline, natural beauties, and quality accommodations facilities. In order to assess all industrial conditions, yacht tourism has been taken in hand in a SWOT view. Depending upon SWOT outputs, some relevant strategies were discussed. Estimations were interpreted in the lights of a case study treated of applications and conditions in two marinas located in Istanbul.

Abstract:In Turkey, until the beginning of the 1990s, the coastal areas were the top destination for many people during their summer vacation. However, this preference has started to shift toward the mountain areas. Nowadays, mountainous regions of the Eastern Black Sea Region, especially the summer pastures, “Yayla (plural: Yaylalar)” have become popular vacation spots for domestic tourists. Highlands and summer pastures possess a rich natural and cultural heritage in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. Therefore, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is promoting rural tourism in the region. With the expansion of the tourism industry, tourist activities have also gained momentum in some summer pastures, turning them into important tourism centers with increased tourism investments. This activity has also brought a rapid change in land use patterns and functions of summer pastures along with the lifestyle of the local people. This shift has resulted in positive changes such as development in the area on one hand and negative changes in environmental, socioeconomic, and cultural values on the other. Therefore, it is assumed that rural tourism (yayla tourism) and the protection of our cultural heritage have correlation in terms of conflict and mutual benefits.
Land Use/Land Cover Changes in a Mediterranean Summer Tourism Destination in Turkey

Abstract:Tourism contributes to national and local economies especially in the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Turkey including the study area, Fethiye-Göcek, Muğla in southwest Turkey. The study evaluates land use/land cover (LULC) changes driven by tourism development as a case considering the past (1995–2020) and future environmental impacts on the area. High-resolution remote sensing and some socio-economic data were employed to monitor the situation and causes of LULC changes using Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST). The results show a decrease in the size of water surface, forest and maquis lands due to tourism development together with an increase in urban fabrics and bare lands due to urbanisation and forest fires. A significant positive correlation was detected between the urbanisation rate, population size and built-up area as well as air temperature and LST. Rapid and unplanned tourism development boosted investments for infrastructure and facilities and thus increased the demands for lands. Such lands were mostly gained by filling the sea or transforming agricultural and greenhouse areas, forest and maquis-covered lands. The unplanned development of tourism and urban areas caused serious hazards to the natural and cultural areas which threaten the sustainability of tourism. Planning suggestions are proposed to decision makers like coordination works for sustainable and responsible tourism development.

Destination service quality, affective image and revisit intention: The moderating role of past experience

Abstract:This study examines the moderating role of past experience on the relationship between destination service quality, destination affective image and re-visit intention. With Alanya, Turkey, serving as the destination context, the study population comprises of 539 survey responses from foreign tourists. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data with the moderating effect of past experience analyzed using multiple group analysis. In light of the study's findings, perceptions related to language, accommodation, hospitality and activity services were found to have a positive and significant effect on the perception of the destination's affective image. Accordingly, destination management organizations (DMOs) are advised to adopt strategies to ensure that quality perceptions of tourists regarding language, accommodation, hospitality and activity services are addressed. In addition, evidence from the study suggests that accommodation-based service-quality perceptions on destination affective image, and destination affective image perceptions on revisit intention, provide a more robust determinant for repeat visitors to the destination than for first-time visitors. The paper closes by arguing that DMOs should therefore pay more attention to accommodation services that may positively affect the destination affective image (DAI) perceptions of repeat tourists.

Abstract:In the rapidly developing and changing tourism sector, there are some changes in the wishes and expectations of the tourists, such as the desire to have unique and memorable experiences. It has become very important for tourism businesses to try to offer unique and memorable experiences to tourists, who are aware of the fact that providing tourist satisfaction is an important determinant in ensuring that businesses are preferred again or destinations are visited again. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of memorable tourism experiences on customer satisfaction and revisit intention in the context of cultural tourism. In this direction, local cultural tourists visiting the Historic Peninsula in İstanbul represent the universe of the research. Quantitative method was adopted in the research and questionnaire technique was used as data collection method. Convenience sampling method was used to determine the sample of the study. A total of 385 questionnaires were obtained from the participants included in the research. Data collected; Reliability was evaluated by factor analysis and regression analysis. As a result of the analyzes carried out, it has been determined that the memorable tourism experience has a positive effect on customer satisfaction and revisit intention. Again, as a result of the analysis, it was concluded that customer satisfaction positively affects the intention to revisit. The results of the research support the literature. In line with the results of the research, a number of suggestions that are thought to be beneficial to destination managers, tourism businesses and researchers working on this subject are presented.

Abstract:Tourist guides (TGs), who are among the most important employees of the tourism sector, have a very important role in tourist satisfaction. While the effect of TRs on performance criteria and tourist satisfaction in foreign literature is the subject of many studies; a limited number of studies were found in the Turkish literature.Evaluation of the guidance service provided in places visited by millions of tourists every year, such as the Ancient City of Ephesus, is a necessity in order to meet the ever-changing market expectations. In line with this scope, the aim of the study is to reveal the effect of the performance of TRs on the satisfaction of tourists. Questionnaire technique, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the study. The population of the research consists of domestic tourists visiting Ephesus between July and September 2021. As a sample, the easy sampling method, which is one of the non-probabilistic sampling methods, was preferred and a total of 399 data were collected. The obtained data were analyzed by the least squares method and and structural equation modeling. According to the results of the analysis, entertainment introduction skill, appearance, problem solving skills and organizational skills of TRs affect the satisfaction of domestic tourists in a meaningful and positive way. Empathy, professional competence and communication skills of TGs remained below the expectations of domestic tourists. Abstract:Technological developments, which are closely related to the tourism sector, have led to the concepts of “smart tourism”. The smart city approach is the basis of smart concepts for tourism. For this reason, in order to realize “smart tourism” applications in a tourism destination, it is necessary to develop “smart city” infrastructure for that city first. Therefore, it would be a correct approach to evaluate “smart city” and “smart tourism” applications as integrated with each other, enhancing and enriching the quality of life of the local people in that city, and enriching the experiences of those who temporarily visit that city, supported by advanced internet technologies. When we look at the current “smart tourism” objects, it is seen that internet-supported applications have been developed in important tourism destinations, which especially regulate the tourist's use of time, make use of transportation services, obtain information about tourist attractions, and facilitate their use. These are the practices that contribute significantly to the quality of the touristic experience of the tourist at the destination. Thus, it is very important to develop applications related to “smart tourism”, primarily in destinations that have worldwide awareness and significant touristic attractions. Abstract:This study aims to examine how tourism enterprises can ensure their sustainability and elude the negative effects of the COVID-19 crisis via recovery strategies through semi-structured in-depth interviews, focusing on the tourism industry in Antalya, the first and most important destination in Türkiye, in terms of arrivals and nights spent. According to the findings, travel bans and quarantine measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic had devastating effects on Antalya's tourism sector. In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a shortage of personnel in tourism industry, a persisting problem. In managing this crisis, businesses and the state have attempted various recovery strategies. Despite a recovery period since 2021, vulnerabilities in the national economy and increasing inflation rates since COVID-19 have triggered input and living costs. Furthermore, the Ukraine War has adversely affected the sustainability of tourism activities in Antalya. Moreover, due to new regulations regarding retirement in 2023, some middle-level managers in tourism sector have retired, leading to predictions of a potential crisis in upper-level management in the future. According to the study results, cooperation in tourism sector, public–private–university collaboration, and government support play significant roles in achieving full recovery from the crisis and ensuring sustainability in tourism sector activities. The study may contribute to the literature and help industry representatives and policymakers in terms of sustainability in tourism and crisis management recovery strategies.

Abstract:The developments in the century we live in have also affected the tourism sector. In particular, competition between destinations has increased, and many new destinations have begun to be offered to tourists. This situation has caused the decision-making processes of tourists to become more complex. Because consumption preference decisions are affected by emotional as well as rational factors. Many factors play a role in tourists' destination choices and purchasing decisions. When we consider countries as destinations, country personalities can also influence the destination choice of tourists. From this point of view, it is aimed at determining whether the country’s personality as perceived by tourists visiting Turkey has an effect on their destination choice and satisfaction. It is known that a positive perception of country personality has a significant effect on consumers' destination choice and, accordingly, their satisfaction with the destination. In this context, first a conceptual framework was created, and then data were collected through face-to-face and online surveys with tourists. In the research, 395 of the questionnaires applied to foreign tourists visiting Turkey were evaluated. The data obtained in the study were analyzed with the SPSS statistical package program and discussed in terms of descriptive and inferential statistics. As a result of the analysis, it has been determined that there is a significant relationship between the country personality's destination choice and satisfaction. In addition, with the regression analysis, it was seen that the personality of the country positively affected both the destination choice decisions and satisfaction perceptions of the tourists.

Abstract:Tourism has been recognized as an essential economic development tool generating revenue and employment for nations' economies. The study aims to prevent the migration of local communities to another place, the disappearance of cultural traditions over time, the inactivity of historical rural buildings, and the transformation of rural areas into places unsuitable for daily life and rituals of the local people with sustainable rural tourism policies and strategies. For this purpose, a participatory perspective will be presented by considering the differences of Akcakese Village in Sile, as in the case studies, with a holistic database to be created in line with the views of tourists, residents, public officials, and tour organizers. This case study has used a conceptual framework of current trends in sustainable rural tourism, as well as a combination of a SWOT matrix and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach to understanding the primary ways in which a declining rural destination can utilize its architectural heritage to regenerate physically, socially, and economically. In this way, the study will contribute to determining the applications that can be made to revitalize the historical rural areas, which have experienced a similar decline with Akcakese Village over time, focusing on rural tourism.

Abstract:This study aims to determine the effect of destination image on the intention to recommend memorable tourism experiences of tourists participating in organized tours. In this context, the relationships between the variables of destination image, memorable tourism experience, tourist satisfaction and intention to recommend were examined in the research process. Quantitative research methods were used in the study. A questionnaire was preferred as the data collection tool. The population of the research consists of individuals living in Türkiye and having previous experience in organized tours. Data were collected from 950 participants using the convenience sampling technique from this universe. It has been revealed that the destination image has a positive effect on tourist satisfaction, memorable tourism experience and intention to recommend. In this context, it can be said that phenomena such as image, satisfaction and experience affect tourists' perceptions of destination image, and this situation increases the probability of destinations being preferred repeatedly. As a result, it can be concluded that factors with high emotional intensity such as memorable tourism experience and tourist satisfaction affect the intention to recommend.

Abstract:This research aims to reveal the current state of knowledge of the studies in which tourism and self-determination theory are used together and to provide clues for future studies. To achieve the aim of the research, the Web of Science was used as a database. In the WoS database, the search terms "self-determination theory", "tourism", and "tourist" were searched in the "topic" category. The data set of the research consists only of published articles. Thanks to the bibliometric method and software used in this study, the development of studies in which tourism and self-determination theory are used together has been analysed. Before the examination, seven parameters most frequently used in bibliometric analyses were determined. This article is the first study that analyses the articles using self-determination theory in tourism. Studies on tourism and self-determination theory are receiving more and more attention, and this article provides a significant opportunity to see the gap in the literature. In the research, 55 articles published between 2009-2022 were analysed, and as a result, prominent articles, authors, keywords, journals, institutions, and countries were revealed. It was observed that there was a jump in articles in this field between 2019-2021.
The relationships among nostalgic emotion, destination images and tourist behaviors: An empirical study of Istanbul

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>Although a consensus exists in the literature regarding the operationalization of the affective component of destination image, interestingly there is no agreement on the operationalization of the cognitive aspect of the destination image of Istanbul. Also, even though there are a few studies investigating the concept of 'nostalgic emotion' in tourism management and destinations, most have only examined the influence of nostalgic emotion on destination image before tourists' actual experience (pre-trip destination image) rather than post-visit experience of tourists as their destination image is modified by actual emotional experiences and their post-visit (e.g. museum visits) evaluations. This paper documents two studies. In the first, which investigated 150 tourists on the last day of their tours, the cognitive image of Istanbul was found to be a multi-dimensional construct composed of attractions, infrastructure, atmosphere, and value variables. The second study investigated 200 tourists who were visiting museums and found that nostalgic emotion positively relates to affective destination image, and all components of the cognitive destination image of Istanbul. It was further found that: (1) affective destination image positively relates to intention to revisit and recommend; (2) attractions, atmosphere, and value variables of a cognitive destination image is positively related to intention to recommend; and (3) attractions and the value aspects of a cognitive destination image positively relate to tourist intention to revisit. Destination images were found moreover to partially mediate the relationship between nostalgic emotion and intention to revisit and recommend.</p>

The Role of the Destination Image in Creating Memorable Tourism Experience

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the impact of destination image on memorable tourism experience (MTE). We also analyzed the effect of memorable tourism experience on revisit intention. Since there is a limited number of studies on the relationship between destination image and MTE, this study will contribute to the literature. Non-probability convenience sampling method was used to select the sample. The research was conducted with a total of 707 tourists who visited Antalya, Turkey. The data obtained from the study were analyzed using SPSS 20 and LISREL 8.7 package programs. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to analyze the data in the study. Our results indicate that the dimensions of the destination image, namely natural attractions, cultural attractions, tourism infrastructure, and general infrastructure, significantly influence hedonism and local culture. However, dimensions of destination image partly affect novelty, involvement, meaningfulness, and knowledge. Regarding the second objective, the results revealed that MTE dimensions explained 21.9% of the variance in revisit intention. Since novelty is an important antecedent of MTE and revisits intention, novelty and initiatives related to the tourism sector should be constantly monitored. Destination management organizations could be contributed to the formation of MTE by increasing the activities such as festivals, competitions, exhibitions and encouraging tourists to participate in these activities. Other managerial implications are discussed based on the study results, and directions for future research are provided.
Cultural tourism: a neglected dimension of tourism industry

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to highlight the cultural aspects of a country as a Mediterranean island (North Cyprus) where tourism is the main economic sector. Cultural products are drawing significant attention as interest in experiencing and learning about different cultures has grown widespread among tourists today. The assumption is that if tourism policy makers are not clearly defining their cultural values, along with appropriate strategies to restore their authenticity, it is likely that most of the cultural uniqueness will be underutilized and eventually lost. A qualitative research strategy has been employed and an in-depth semi-structured set of interview questions were administered to the informants in numerous culturally involved institutions. The study revealed that, notwithstanding the rich cultural assets and abundance of heritage, North Cyprus has not been able to develop a clear strategy towards cultural and heritage planning for the purpose of tourists' consumption.
