Abstract:Elastic surfaces immersed in fluids arise in a wide range of scientific and engineering applications. As opposed to traditional numerical approaches based on a triangulation of the surface, we propose a phase-field model which incorporates surface elasticity, including in-plane stretching and shearing. The model is based on a phase-field model for two-phase flow coupled to a fully Eulerian description of the surface deformation tensor. We put a particular focus on purely dilational and 3D axisymmetric surfaces. For these cases we propose models to track the evolution of in-plane strains and stresses by simple scalar surface PDEs, which can be localized to the diffuse interface by use of an approximate surface delta function. To validate the applicability and accuracy of the phase-field model we conduct several numerical experiments and show convergence towards reference solutions. Finally, we highlight some distinct advantages of the presented model, including the ability to handle topological changes, while ensuring conservative properties. Including relaxation terms, we extend the model to viscoelastic in-plane surfaces which enables to tackle a range of complicated problems such as surface fluidization and solidification in the future.
