Abstract:Acoustically forced oscillation of spherical gas bubbles in a viscoelastic material is studied through comparisons between experiments and linear theory. An experimental setup has been designed to visualize bubble dynamics in gelatin gels using a high-speed camera. A spherical gas bubble is created by focusing an infrared laser pulse into (gas-supersaturated) gelatin gels. The bubble radius (up to 150 μm) under mechanical equilibrium is controlled by gradual mass transfer of gases across the bubble interface. The linearized bubble dynamics are studied from the observation of spherical bubble oscillation driven by low-intensity, planar ultrasound driven at 28 kHz. It follows from the experiment for an isolated bubble that the frequency response in its volumetric oscillation was shifted to the high frequency side and its peak was suppressed as the gelatin concentration increases. The measurement is fitted to the linearized Rayleigh–Plesset equation coupled with the Voigt constitutive equation that models the behavior of linear viscoelastic solids; the fitting yields good agreement by tuning unknown values of the viscosity and rigidity, indicating that more complex phenomena including shear thinning, stress relaxation, and retardation do not play an important role for the small-amplitude oscillations. Moreover, the cases for bubble-bubble and bubble-wall systems are studied. The observed interaction effect on the linearized dynamics can be explained as well by a set of the Rayleigh–Plesset equations coupled through acoustic radiation among these systems. This suggests that this experimental setup can be applied to validate the model of bubble dynamics with more complex configuration such as a cloud of bubbles in viscoelastic materials.

Shape stability of a gas bubble in a soft solid

Abstract:Predicting the onset of non-spherical oscillations of bubbles in soft matter is a fundamental cavitation problem with implications to sonoprocessing, polymeric materials synthesis, and biomedical ultrasound applications. The shape stability of a bubble in a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic medium with nonlinear elasticity, the simplest constitutive model for soft solids, is analytically investigated and compared to experiments. Using perturbation methods, we develop a model reducing the equations of motion to two sets of evolution equations: a Rayleigh-Plesset-type equation for the mean (volume-equivalent) bubble radius and an equation for the non-spherical mode amplitudes. Parametric instability is predicted by examining the natural frequency and the Mathieu equation for the non-spherical modes, which are obtained from our model. Our theoretical results show good agreement with published experiments of the shape oscillations of a bubble in a gelatin gel. We further examine the impact of viscoelasticity on the time evolution of non-spherical mode amplitudes. In particular, we find that viscosity increases the damping rate, thus suppressing the shape instability, while shear modulus increases the natural frequency, which changes the unstable mode. We also explain the contributions of rotational and irrotational fields to the viscoelastic stresses in the surroundings and at the bubble surface, as these contributions affect the damping rate and the unstable mode. Our analysis on the role of viscoelasticity is potentially useful to measure viscoelastic properties of soft materials by experimentally observing the shape oscillations of a bubble.

Abstract:Free oscillations of a bubble in soft tissue is of relevance to a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound applications. Heat and mass transfer effects have been explored in the context of bubble oscillations in water; however, the extent to which they influence bubble oscillations in soft materials is presently unknown. Our objective is to use numerical modeling to predict bubble oscillations in viscoelastic, tissue-like media, while accounting for heat and mass transfer. We numerically solve the Keller-Miksis equation to compute the Rayleigh collapse of a spherical bubble in a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic medium with finite-strain elasticity. The energy equation is solved inside and outside the bubble, and a mass conservation equation is solved for the vapor inside the bubble; equilibrium phase change is assumed. Using linear, small-amplitude perturbation theory, we investigate the bubble response. We show how the damping and oscillatory behavior depends on the eigenvalues of the full system; in particular, the time constant does not follow a monotonic relationship with respect to shear modulus. We also identify regimes in which solving the fully partial differential equations for energy and vapor concentration is not necessary. Finally, we interpret our results in the context of ultrasound applications.

Abstract:In this paper we study the bubble dynamics driven by an aspherical acoustic field, based on the theory of hydrodynamics. Evolution equations for an aspherical bubble are derived under the aspherical acoustic driving. The numerical calculations show that the aspherical bubble can oscillate stably and periodically under suitable conditions, which is out of the explanation of spherical perturbation theory. Furthermore, under some controlling parameters, the aspherical distortion can either grow rapidly, leading to the bubble's breakdown, or decay gradually making the bubble spherical, which is similar to the result of the perturbation theory driven by a spherical ultrasound.
Predicting complex nonspherical instability shapes of inertial cavitation bubbles in viscoelastic soft matter

Abstract:Inertial cavitation in soft matter is an important phenomenon featured in a wide array of biological and engineering processes. Recent advances in experimental, theoretical, and numerical techniques have provided access to a world full of nonlinear physics, yet most of our quantitative understanding to date has been centered on a spherically symmetric description of the cavitation process in water. However, cavitation bubble growth and collapse rarely occur in a perfectly symmetrical fashion, particularly in soft materials. Predicting the onset of dynamically arising, nonspherical instabilities in soft matter has remained a significant, unresolved challenge, in part due to the additional constitutive complexities introduced by the surrounding nonlinear viscoelastic solid. Here, we provide a new theoretical framework capable of accurately predicting the onset of nonspherical instability shapes of a bubble in a soft material by explicitly accounting for all pertinent nonlinear interactions between the cavitation bubble and the solid surroundings. Comparison with high-resolution experimental images from laser-induced cavitation events in a polyacrylamide hydrogel show excellent agreement. Interestingly, and consistent with experimental findings, our model predicts the emergence of various dynamic instability shapes for circumferential bubble stretch ratios greater than 1, in contrast to most quasistatic investigations. Our new theoretical framework not only provides unprecedented insight into the cavitation dynamics in a soft, nonlinear solid, but also provides a quantitative means of interpreting bubble dynamics relevant to a wide array of engineering and medical applications as well as natural phenomena.
Bubble Removal in Viscoelastic Solution by Ultrasonic Vibration

Abstract:Bubble removal in viscoelastic solution is an important challenge in both industry production and laboratory experiments. However, no effective physical bubble removal technique in viscoelastic solutions has been reported until now. In this study, the ultrasonic vibration effect on bubble removal in viscoelastic solution (300ppm-CTAC/300ppm-NaSal viscoelastic solution) was firstly observed. The ultrasonic vibration can successfully remove bubbles whose diameter is ranging from 200 mu m to lmm, and from 300ppm CTACINaSal at 28 degrees C through assembling bubbles to be a large size bubble cluster in our experiments. The detailed bubble-assembling process were observed and analyzed. It is pointed out that the bubble-assembling process was directly associated with the intensity of ultrasonic vibration and the distance between bubbles in the solutions. However, the detail mechanism of the bubble-assembling behavior is still unclear, which is worth of further observation..

Abstract:The dynamic behaviour of SonoVue microbubbles, a new generation ultrasound contrast agent, is investigated in real time with light scattering method. Highly diluted SonoVue microbubbles are injected into a diluted gel made of xanthan gum and water. The responses of individual SonoVue bubbles to driven ultrasound pulses are measured. Both linear and nonlinear bubble oscillations are observed and the results suggest that SonoVue microbubbles can generate strong nonlinear responses. By fitting the experimental data of individual bubble responses with Sarkar's model, the shell coating parameter of the bubbles and dilatational viscosity is estimated to be 7.0 nm.s.Pa.

Abstract:Recently, we demonstrated that the local heating of degassed water can generate water vapor microbubbles and induce a rapid flow around the bubble. Although flow generation involves the self-excited oscillation of bubbles at a local heating point, the conditions under which the bubbles oscillate are not fully understood. In this study, the dependence of microbubble size and oscillation frequency on the concentration of non-condensable gases in water was investigated. A continuous-wave laser beam was focused on a β-FeSi2 thin film, and water was locally heated using the photothermal conversion properties of the film. The results showed that the lower the concentration of non-condensable gases dissolved in water, the smaller the bubble size and the higher the oscillation frequency. Furthermore, it was found that the bubbles oscillate when the amount of non-condensable gas absorbed by the bubbles, i.e., the bubble size, falls below a specific level. This study can provide a new understanding of the bubble oscillation mechanism and lead to the development of fluid control technology using bubbles.

Tuning local microstructure of colloidal gels by ultrasound-activated deformable inclusions

Abstract:Colloidal gels possess a memory of previous shear events, both steady and oscillatory. This memory, embedded in the microstructure, affects the mechanical response of the gel, and therefore enables precise tuning of the material properties under careful preparation. Here we demonstrate how the dynamics of a deformable inclusion, namely a bubble, can be used to locally tune the microstructure of a colloidal gel. We examine two different phenomena of bubble dynamics that apply a local strain to the surrounding material: dissolution due to mass transfer, with a characteristic strain rate of $10^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$; and volumetric oscillations driven by ultrasound, with a characteristic frequency of $10^4$ s$^{-1}$. We characterise experimentally the microstructure of a model colloidal gel around bubbles in a Hele-Shaw geometry using confocal microscopy and particle tracking. In bubble dissolution experiments, we observe the formation of a pocket of solvent next to the bubble surface, but marginal changes to the microstructure. In experiments with ultrasound-induced bubble oscillations, we observe a striking rearrangement of the gel particles into a microstructure with increased local ordering. High-speed bright-field microscopy reveals the occurrence of both high-frequency bubble oscillations and steady microstreaming flow; both are expected to contribute to the emergence of the local order in the microstructure. These observations open the way to local tuning of colloidal gels based on deformable inclusions controlled by external pressure fields.

Abstract:With promising applications in medical diagnosis and therapy, the behavior of shell-encapsula-ted ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) has attracted considerable attention. Currently, second-generation contrast agents stabilized by a phospholipid membrane are widely used and studies have focused on the dynamics of single phospholipid shell-encapsulated microbubbles. To improve the safety and the efficiency of the methods using the propagation or targeted ultrasound, a better understanding of the propagation of ultrasound in liquids containing multiple encapsulated microbubbles is required. By incorporating the Marmottant–Gompertz model into the multiple scale analysis of two-phase model, this study derived a Korteweg–de Vries–Burgers equation as a weakly nonlinear wave equation for one-dimensional ultrasound in bubbly liquids. It was found that the wave propagation characteristics changed with the initial surface tension, highlighting two notable features of the phospholipid shell: buckling and rupture. These results may provide insights into the suitable state of microbubbles, and better control of ultrasound for medical applications, particularly those that require high precision.

Abstract:When a microbubble is subject to ultrasound, non-spherical oscillation or surface modes can be generated after many acoustic cycles. This phenomenon has wide applications, including ultrasonic cleaning, sonochemistry, and biomedical ultrasonics. Yet, the nonlinear development of the bubble shape modes over dozens of cycles is not well understood. Here, we describe a grid-free and robust model to simulate the phenomenon. A viscous pressure correction is introduced to compensate the non-zero tangential stress at the free surface in the potential flow model, based on conservation of energy. Consequently, the phenomenon is modeled using the boundary integral method, in which the compressible and viscous effects are incorporated into the model through the boundary conditions. The computations have been carried out for axisymmetric cases; however, the numerical model can be extended for three-dimensional cases in a straightforward manner. The numerical results are shown to be in good agreement for many cycles with some independent viscous and compressible theories for axisymmetric bubbles and experiments for microbubbles undergoing shape oscillation subject to ultrasound. The development of the shape oscillation of a bubble after a dozen cycles, the formation of a reentry jet and its penetration through the bubble, and the topological transformation of the bubble are simulated and analyzed in terms of the amplitude and frequency of the ultrasound. The computations and physical analysis are carried out for the development of shape modes due to a resonant volume oscillation, strong pressure wave, or the matching of the acoustic wave frequency with the shape mode frequency.

Effect of viscoelasticity on nonlinear vibration of single microbubble

Abstract:Based on the Church-Hoff model,the nonlinear oscillations of a single encapsulated microbubble with a finite thickness shell are theoretically studied.The effects of viscoelasticity on radial oscillations and the fundamental and harmonic components are researched.The peaks of radial oscillations and magnitudes of power spectra of the fundamental and harmonic components all increase gradually with the shear modulus of shell varying from 0 to 10 MPa by an interval of 0.1 MPa at the same shear viscosity,while they decrease as the shear viscosity increases from 0 to 1 Pa · s by an interval of 0.01 Pa · s at the same shear modulus.The fluctuation ranges of subharmonic and ultraharmonic signals are much larger than both the fundamental and second harmonic components.It means that the effect of viscoelasticity on the subharmonic and ultraharmonic signals is greater than that on the fundamental and second harmonic components.So adjusting the viscoelasticity of the shell is a potential method to obtain a perfect microbubble contrast agent used for the subharmonic and ultraharmonic imaging.Four points with significant fundamental and harmonic components are chosen as an example:a shear viscosity of 0.39 Pa · s with shear modulus of 3.9,6.6,and 8.6 MPa,respectively; a shear modulus of 6.6 MPa with a shear viscosity of 0.42 Pa · s.

Abstract:<p>A model for a nonspherical bubble in a compressible liquid under the coupling effect of ultrasound and electrostatic field was developed in this study. The following assumptions are made: (1) the bubble undergoes adiabatic oscillation; (2) the gravity of the liquid is negligible; (3) the bubble is insulating. If the speed of sound approaches infinity (<span class="math"><math>c→∞</math></span>), the equation set is reduced to the equation set for an incompressible liquid. We found that, under ultrasonic irradiation coupled with electric stress, a nonspherical bubble cannot oscillate steadily in the liquid. The bubble is bound to collapse during several cycles. The presence of electric stress reduces the surface tension at the bubble wall, which produces a larger maximum bubble-radius during the rarefaction cycle and a smaller minimum bubble-radius during the compression cycle. Consequently, during the collapse, both the gas pressure and the temperature in the bubble center increase substantially, if the bubble is exposed to both ultrasound and electrostatic field instead of ultrasound alone. In addition, the cavitation threshold of the bubble within an electrostatic field decreases significantly, compared to the bubble without an electrostatic field. In general, bubble cavitation occurs more easily and violently in the liquid after the introduction of an electrostatic field.</p>

Effect of Bubble Shell Nonlinearity on Ultrasound Nonlinear Propagation Through Microbubble Populations.

Abstract:Nonlinear propagation of ultrasound through microbubble populations can generate artifacts and reduce contrast to tissue ratio in ultrasound imaging. The existing propagation model, which underestimates harmonic generation by an order of magnitude, was revised by incorporating a nonlinear constitutive equation for the coating into the description of the microbubble dynamics. Significantly better agreement with experiments was obtained, indicating that coating nonlinearity represents an important contribution to nonlinear propagation of ultrasound in microbubble populations. The results were found to be sensitive to the parameters characterizing the coating nonlinearity and thus accurate measurement of these parameters is required for accurate quantitative predictions.
Structuring Colloidal Gels via Micro-Bubble Oscillations

Abstract:Locally (re)structuring colloidal gels $\unicode{x2013}$ micron-sized particles forming a connected network with arrested dynamics $\unicode{x2013}$ enables precise tuning of the micromechanical and -rheological properties of the system. A recent experimental study [B. Saint-Michel, G. Petekidis, and V. Garbin, Soft Matter $\boldsymbol{18}$, 2092 (2022)] showed that rapid restructuring can occur by acoustically modulating an embedded microbubble. Here, we perform Brownian dynamics simulations to understand the mechanical effect of an oscillating microbubble on the structure of the embedding colloidal gel. Our simulations reveal a hexagonal-close-packed restructuring in a range that is comparable to the amplitude of the oscillations. However, we were unable to reproduce the unexpectedly long-ranged modification of the gel structure $\unicode{x2013}$ dozens of amplitudes $\unicode{x2013}$ observed in experiment. This suggests including long-ranged effects, such as fluid flow, should be considered in future work.

Forced Oscillations of Gaseous Bubbles in Microtubules

Abstract:The wall of elastic microtubules can be described as a membrane-type elastic structure. An oscillating system driven by ultrasound consists of liquid columns, a bubble and elastic wall of the tube. The nonlinear properties of this system are explored. Based on the successive approximation method, the nonlinear resonance frequencies, the amplitude response of fundamental and third oscillations to driving acoustic wave, and the mechanism of resonance response related to the driving wave whose frequency is lower than the resonant frequency are analyzed theoretically. The nonlinear system is oscillating in two directions: the axial and radial directions of the bubble in the microtubule. Numerical results show that the resonance responses cannot be present simultaneously. It has been found that the amplitudes of the fundamental and third harmonic oscillation are multivalued, which may lead to instable response. The third harmonic oscillation is stronger in the region of lower frequencies.
Asymmetric Oscillation and Acoustic Response from an Encapsulated Microbubble Bound Within a Small Vessel

Abstract:Understanding the dynamics of ultrasonic excited microbubbles bound within microvessels is of significance for novel ultrasonic imaging, drug delivery and therapeutic biomedical applications. A finite element model (FEM) considering acoustic nonlinearity is developed to describe the asymmetric oscillation and acoustic response from an encapsulated microbubble bound within a small vessel. Numerical simulation is performed for a 2 μm encapsulated microbubble bound within 8–20 μm vessels using 2 MHz ultrasound excitation. The oscillation of the bound microbubble becomes more asymmetric under larger ultrasound pressure or within the smaller vessel. The normalized difference between the major and minor axes of epllipse is estimated to be 2.16% for the 8 μm vessel at an acoustic pressure of 0.5 MPa. In addition, the fundamental component of the acoustic scattering from the bound microbubble is enhanced by 6 dB while the second harmonic component is decreased by approximately 29 dB compared with the free microbubble.
Radial and Translational Oscillations of an Acoustically Levitated Bubble in Aqueous Ethanol Solutions.

Abstract:The radial and translational oscillations of a single cavitation bubble in a standing ultrasound wave were investigated experimentally at various driving acoustic pressures for aqueous ethanol solutions with different bulk molar fractions of ethanol range of 0-1.3 × 10(-3). The results show that both the lower and upper stability thresholds of the acoustic driving pressure decreased as the concentration of ethanol was increased. At a given driving pressure the ambient and maximum bubble sizes increased with increasing ethanol concentration. In addition, as the ethanol was increased, the sonoluminescence intensity decreased while the bubble dynamics remained largely unchanged. The translational oscillation of the levitated bubble, however, became increasingly violent with increasing ethanol concentration. The displacement of the bubble reached 0.7 mm at the highest concentration studied (1.3 × 10(-3)) and the maximum bubble size was found to change as the bubble jumped up and down.
