Abstract:Turbine-wake interactions among wind turbine array significantly affect the efficiency of wind farms. Yaw angle control is one of the potential ways to increase the total power generation of wind plants, but the sensitivity of such control strategy to atmospheric stability is rarely studied. In the present work, large-eddy simulation of a two-turbine configuration under convective atmospheric boundary layer is performed, with different yaw angles for the front one, the effect of turbine induced forces on the flow field is modeled by actuator line. Emphasis is placed on wake characteristics and aerodynamic performance. Simulation results reveal that atmospheric stability has a considerable impact on the behavior of wind turbine, wake deflection on the horizontal hub height plane for yawed wind turbine is relatively small, compared with the result of the empirical wake model proposed for wind turbine operating in the neutral stratification, which is attributed to the higher ambient turbulence intensity and large variance of wind direction in the convective condition. And associated with the smaller wake deflection, the total power production does not increase as expected when yawing the upstream turbine. In addition, due to the existence of great quantities of disorganized coherent turbulent structures in the unstable condition, the yaw bearing moment experienced by the downstream wind turbine increases dramatically, even if the rotor plane of the first turbine is perpendicular to the inflow direction. INTRODUCTION Unlike operating alone, wind turbines in wind farms are closely aligned with each other, the resulting complex wake interference will significantly affect the efficiency of the wind plant due to the decreased wind speed and increased turbulence [1]. In order to reduce the power loss caused by turbine-wake interactions, many related studies have been performed. A conventional way is to determine an optimal layout of wind turbines according to the local wind rose, but as a result of continuously varying wind directions, the application of such a method is limited [2]. Therefore, the focus of research shifted to the development of wake mitigation strategies, such as, adjusting the blade angle or the generator torque, to optimize the induction factors [3, 4]. What’s more, yawing wind turbine is also one of the potential techniques, which is the focus of the present work. In wind tunnel measurement of Adaramola, M. et al [5], two similar turbine models were operating in uniform inflow condition, with different yaw angles of the upstream one, their results show that total power output is increased by about 12% as the upstream wind turbine yaws 30°. Later, in the research of Mikkelsen, T. et al [6], a similar conclusion was reached. Moreover, the CFD technique also plays an important role in the relevant studies, Jiménez et al [7] used LES together with actuator disk model to analyze the wake deflection for yawed wind turbines under different thrust coefficients; Fleming et al [8, 9] investigated the effects of several methods proposed to improve the overall performance of wind plant, and the yaw angle control was proved to be effective with wake-redirection. Bastankhah and Porté-Agel [10] also carried out experiments to explore the wake characteristics and performance of a model wind turbine with several yaw angles in the neutral atmospheric boundary layer, based on the results, they developed an OMAE2020-18087 1 Copyright © 2020 ASME Proceedings of the ASME 2020 39th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering OMAE2020 August 3-7, 2020, Virtual, Online Aendee Red-Only opy analytical wake model [11] to predict the wake deflection trajectory and velocity distribution for yawed wind turbines. However, the above mentioned researches are limited to the uniform inflow condition or the neutral condition, very few of them have studied the interaction between the yawed wind turbine and the convective atmospheric boundary layer flow, although it is important, studying on it will help us to understand the mechanism and effectiveness of yaw angle control strategy more deeply. This paper is organized as follows: in Section 2, the numerical method and setup are described. The results of wake characteristics and aerodynamic performance of the wind turbine are shown and analyzed in Section 3. Finally, conclusions are summarized in Section 4.
