Abstract:Computing finite temperature properties of a quantum many-body system is key to describing a broad range of correlated quantum many-body physics from quantum chemistry and condensed matter to thermal quantum field theories. Quantum computing with rapid developments in recent years has a huge potential to impact the computation of quantum thermodynamics. To fulfill the potential impacts, it is crucial to design quantum algorithms that utilize the computation power of the quantum computing devices. Here we present a quantum kernel function expansion (QKFE) algorithm for solving thermodynamic properties of quantum many-body systems. In this quantum algorithm, the many-body density of states is approximated by a kernel-Fourier expansion, whose expansion moments are obtained by random state sampling and quantum interferometric measurements. As compared to its classical counterpart, namely the kernel polynomial method (KPM), QKFE has an exponential advantage in the cost of both time and memory. In computing low temperature properties, QKFE becomes inefficient, as similar to classical KPM. To resolve this difficulty, we further construct a thermal ensemble and approaches the low temperature regime step-by-step. For quantum Hamiltonians, whose ground states are preparable with polynomial quantum circuits, THEI has an overall polynomial complexity. We demonstrate its efficiency with applications to one and two-dimensional quantum spin models, and a fermionic lattice. With our analysis on the realization with digital and analogue quantum devices, we expect the quantum algorithm is accessible to current quantum technology.
Imaginary-Temperature Zeros for Quantum Phase Transitions

Abstract:While the zeros of complex partition functions, such as Lee-Yang zeros and Fisher zeros, have been pivotal in characterizing temperature-driven phase transitions, extending this concept to zero temperature remains an open question. In this work, we propose a solution to this issue by calculating the imaginary-temperature zeros (ITZs), which are defined as the roots of the imaginary-temperature partition function. We illustrate the analytical properties of ITZs in the transverse-field Ising chain, showing that the ITZs' distribution can distinguish between various phases and signify the critical exponents. Universal singular behaviors manifest in such quantities as the edge density of ITZs and the magnetization, with the scaling exponents remarkably differing from those in Lee-Yang theory. We further illuminate the consistency between ITZs and the zeros of the spectral form factor, which offers a practical path for the experimental detection of ITZs.

Exact Fisher zeros and thermofield dynamics across a quantum critical point

Abstract:By setting the inverse temperature $\beta$ loose to occupy the complex plane, Michael E. Fisher showed that the zeros of the complex partition function $Z$, if approaching the real $\beta$ axis, reveal a thermodynamic phase transition. More recently, Fisher zeros were used to mark the dynamical phase transition in quench dynamics. It remains unclear, however, how Fisher zeros can be employed to better understand quantum phase transitions or the non-unitary dynamics of open quantum systems. Here we answer this question by a comprehensive analysis of the analytically continued one-dimensional transverse field Ising model. We exhaust all the Fisher zeros to show that in the thermodynamic limit they congregate into a remarkably simple pattern in the form of continuous open or closed lines. These Fisher lines evolve smoothly as the coupling constant is tuned, and a qualitative change identifies the quantum critical point. By exploiting the connection between $Z$ and the thermofield double states, we obtain analytical expressions for the short- and long-time dynamics of the survival amplitude including its scaling behavior at the quantum critical point. We point out $Z$ can be realized and probed in monitored quantum circuits. The exact analytical results are corroborated by numerical tensor renormalization group. We further show similar patterns of Fisher zeros also emerge in other spin models. Therefore the approach outlined may serve as a powerful tool for interacting quantum systems.

Many-body thermal states on a quantum computer: a variational approach

Abstract:{Many-body quantum states at thermal equilibrium are ubiquitous in nature. Investigating their dynamical properties is a formidable task due to the complexity of the Hilbert space they live in. Quantum computers may have the potential to effectively simulate quantum systems, provided that the many-body state under scrutiny can be faithfully prepared via an efficient algorithm. With this aim, we present a hybrid quantum--classical variational quantum algorithm for the preparation of the Gibbs state of the quantum $XY$ model. Our algorithm is based on the Grover and Rudolph parametrized quantum circuit for the preparation of the Boltzmann weights of the Gibbs state, and on a parity-preserving ansatz for the allocation of the eigenenergy basis to their respective Boltzmann weight. We explicitly show, with a paradigmatic few-body case instance, how the symmetries of a many-body system can be exploited to significantly reduce the exponentially increasing number of variational parameters needed in the Grover and Rudolph algorithm. Finally, we show that the density matrix, of the Gibbs state of the $XY$ model, obtained by statevector simulations for different parameters, exhibits a fidelity close to unity with the exact Gibbs state; this highlights the potential use of our protocol on current quantum computers.

Abstract:We obtain a generic formula for the distribution of Yang-Lee zeros of one-dimensional quantum many-body systems solvable by the Bethe ansatz and the Yang-Yang thermodynamic formalism. We find that the zeros are located on the negative real axis of the complex fugacity plane and thus prove that no phase transition occurs in these one-dimensional systems, as proved by others using different methods.

Abstract:Simulating non-equilibrium phenomena in strongly-interacting quantum many-body systems, including thermalization, is a promising application of near-term and future quantum computation. By performing experiments on a digital quantum computer consisting of fully-connected optically-controlled trapped ions, we study the role of entanglement in the thermalization dynamics of a $Z_2$ lattice gauge theory in 2+1 spacetime dimensions. Using randomized-measurement protocols, we efficiently learn a classical approximation of non-equilibrium states that yields the gap-ratio distribution and the spectral form factor of the entanglement Hamiltonian. These observables exhibit universal early-time signals for quantum chaos, a prerequisite for thermalization. Our work, therefore, establishes quantum computers as robust tools for studying universal features of thermalization in complex many-body systems, including in gauge theories.

Abstract:The Lee–Yang theorem for the zeroes of the partition function is not strictly applicable to quantum systems because the zeroes are defined in units of the fugacity ehΔτ, and the Euclidean-time lattice spacing Δτ can be divergent in the infrared (IR). We recently presented analytic arguments describing how a new space-Euclidean time zeroes expansion can be defined, which reproduces Lee and Yang's scaling but avoids the unresolved branch points associated with the breaking of nonlocal symmetries such as Parity. We now present a first numerical analysis for this new zeroes approach for a quantum spin chain system. We use our scheme to quantify the renormalization group flow of the physical lattice couplings to the IR fixed point of this system. We argue that the generic Finite-Size Scaling (FSS) function of our scheme is identically the entanglement entropy of the lattice partition function and, therefore, that we are able to directly extract the central charge, c, of the quantum spin chain system using conformal predictions for the scaling of the entanglement entropy.

Quantum computation in fermionic thermal field theories

Abstract:Thermal properties of quantum fields at finite temperature are crucial to understanding strongly interacting matter and recent development in quantum computing has provided an alternative and promising avenue of study. In this work, we study thermal field theories involving only fermions using quantum algorithms. We first delve into the presentations of fermion fields via qubits on digital quantum computers alongside the quantum algorithms such as quantum imaginary time evolutions employed to evaluate thermal properties of generic quantum field theories. Specifically, we show numerical results such as the thermal distribution and the energy density of thermal field theories for Majorana fermions in 1+1 dimensions using quantum simulators. In addition to free field theory, we also study the effects of interactions resulting from coupling with a spatially homogeneous Majorana field. In both cases, we show analytically that thermal properties of the system can be described using phase-space distributions, and the quantum simulation results agree with analytical and semiclassical expectations. Our work is an important step to understand thermal fixed points, preparing for quantum simulation of thermalization in real time.

Zero and Finite Temperature Quantum Simulations Powered by Quantum Magic

Abstract:We introduce a quantum information theory-inspired method to improve the characterization of many-body Hamiltonians on near-term quantum devices. We design a new class of similarity transformations that, when applied as a preprocessing step, can substantially simplify a Hamiltonian for subsequent analysis on quantum hardware. By design, these transformations can be identified and applied efficiently using purely classical resources. In practice, these transformations allow us to shorten requisite physical circuit-depths, overcoming constraints imposed by imperfect near-term hardware. Importantly, the quality of our transformations is tunable: we define a 'ladder' of transformations that yields increasingly simple Hamiltonians at the cost of more classical computation. Using quantum chemistry as a benchmark application, we demonstrate that our protocol leads to significant performance improvements for zero and finite temperature free energy calculations on both digital and analog quantum hardware. Specifically, our energy estimates not only outperform traditional Hartree-Fock solutions, but this performance gap also consistently widens as we tune up the quality of our transformations. In short, our quantum information-based approach opens promising new pathways to realizing useful and feasible quantum chemistry algorithms on near-term hardware.

Abstract:Finite-temperature phases of many-body quantum systems are fundamental to phenomena ranging from condensed-matter physics to cosmology, yet they are generally difficult to simulate. Using an ion trap quantum computer and protocols motivated by the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), we generate nontrivial thermal quantum states of the transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) by preparing thermofield double states at a variety of temperatures. We also prepare the critical state of the TFIM at zero temperature using quantum-classical hybrid optimization. The entanglement structure of thermofield double and critical states plays a key role in the study of black holes, and our work simulates such nontrivial structures on a quantum computer. Moreover, we find that the variational quantum circuits exhibit noise thresholds above which the lowest-depth QAOA circuits provide the best results.
Lee-Yang zeros at $O(3)$ and deconfined quantum critical points

Abstract:Lee-Yang theory, based on the study of zeros of the partition function, is widely regarded as a powerful and complimentary approach to the study of critical phenomena and forms a foundational part of the theory of phase transitions. Its widespread use, however, is complicated by the fact that it requires introducing complex-valued fields that create an obstacle for many numerical methods, especially in the quantum case where very limited studies exist beyond one dimension. Here we present a simple and statistically exact method to compute partition function zeros with general complex-valued external fields in the context of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate the power of this approach by extracting critical exponents from the leading Lee-Yang zeros of 2D quantum antiferromagnets with a complex staggered field, focusing on the Heisenberg bilayer and square-lattice $J$-$Q$ models. The method also allows us to introduce a complex field that couples to valence bond solid order, where we observe extended rings of zeros in the $J$-$Q$ model with purely imaginary staggered and valence bond solid fields.

Many-body effects on the thermodynamics of closed quantum systems

Abstract:Thermodynamics of quantum systems out-of-equilibrium is very important for the progress of quantum technologies, however, the effects of many-body interactions and their interplay with temperature, different drives and dynamical regimes is still largely unknown. Here we present a systematic study of these interplays in the case of driven Hubbard chains subject to a variety of interaction (from non-interacting to strongly correlated) and dynamical regimes (from sudden quench to quasi-adiabatic), and discuss which effects all these ingredients have on the work extraction and entropy production. As treatment of many-body interacting systems is highly challenging, we introduce a simple approximation which includes, for the average quantum work, many-body interactions only via the initial state, while the dynamics is fully non-interacting. We demonstrate that this simple approximation is surprisingly good for estimating both the average quantum work and the related entropy production, even when many-body correlations are significant.

Abstract:Concepts of the complex partition functions and the Fisher zeros provide intrinsic statistical mechanisms for finite temperature and real time dynamical phase transitions. We extend the utility of these complexifications to quantum phase transitions. We exactly identify different Fisher zeros on lines or closed curves and elucidate their correspondence with domain-wall excitations or confined mesons for the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model. The crossover behavior of the Fisher zeros provides a fascinating picture for criticality near the quantum phase transition, where the excitation energy scales are quantitatively determined. We further confirm our results by tensor network calculations and demonstrate a clear signal of deconfined meson excitations from the disruption of the closed zero curves. Our results unambiguously show significant features of Fisher zeros for a quantum phase transition and open up a new route to explore quantum criticality.

On the complexity of quantum partition functions

Abstract:The partition function and free energy of a quantum many-body system determine its physical properties in thermal equilibrium. Here we study the computational complexity of approximating these quantities for $n$-qubit local Hamiltonians. First, we report a classical algorithm with $\mathrm{poly}(n)$ runtime which approximates the free energy of a given $2$-local Hamiltonian provided that it satisfies a certain denseness condition. Our algorithm combines the variational characterization of the free energy and convex relaxation methods. It contributes to a body of work on efficient approximation algorithms for dense instances of optimization problems which are hard in the general case, and can be viewed as simultaneously extending existing algorithms for (a) the ground energy of dense $2$-local Hamiltonians, and (b) the free energy of dense classical Ising models. Secondly, we establish polynomial-time equivalence between the problem of approximating the free energy of local Hamiltonians and three other natural quantum approximate counting problems, including the problem of approximating the number of witness states accepted by a QMA verifier. These results suggest that simulation of quantum many-body systems in thermal equilibrium may precisely capture the complexity of a broad family of computational problems that has yet to be defined or characterized in terms of known complexity classes. Finally, we summarize state-of-the-art classical and quantum algorithms for approximating the free energy and show how to improve their runtime and memory footprint.

Abstract:Quantum systems of indistinguishable particles are commonly described using the formalism of second quantisation, which relies on the assumption that any admissible quantum state must be either symmetric or anti-symmetric under particle permutations. Coherence-induced many-body effects such as superradiance, however, can arise even in systems whose constituents are not fundamentally indistinguishable as long as all relevant dynamical observables are permutation-invariant. Such systems are not confined to symmetric or anti-symmetric states and therefore require a different theoretical approach. Focusing on non-interacting systems, here we combine tools from representation theory and thermodynamically consistent master equations to develop such a framework. We characterise the structure and properties of the steady states emerging in permutation-invariant ensembles of arbitrary multi-level systems that are collectively weakly coupled to a thermal environment. As an application of our general theory, we further explore how these states can in principle be used to enhance the performance of quantum thermal machines. Our group-theoretical framework thereby makes it possible to analyse various limiting cases that would not be accessible otherwise. In addition, it allows us to show that the properties of multi-level ensembles differ qualitatively from those of spin ensembles, which have been investigated earlier using the standard Clebsch-Gordan theory. Our results have a large scope for future generalisations and pave the way for systematic investigations of collective effects arising from permutation-invariance in quantum thermodynamics.

Quantum thermodynamics of nonequilibrium processes in lattice gauge theories

Abstract:A key objective in nuclear and high-energy physics is to describe nonequilibrium dynamics of matter, e.g., in the early universe and in particle colliders, starting from the Standard Model. Classical-computing methods, via the framework of lattice gauge theory, have experienced limited success in this mission. Quantum simulation of lattice gauge theories holds promise for overcoming computational limitations. Because of local constraints (Gauss's laws), lattice gauge theories have an intricate Hilbert-space structure. This structure complicates the definition of thermodynamic properties of systems coupled to reservoirs during equilibrium and nonequilibrium processes. We show how to define thermodynamic quantities such as work and heat using strong-coupling thermodynamics, a framework that has recently burgeoned within the field of quantum thermodynamics. Our definitions suit instantaneous quenches, simple nonequilibrium processes undertaken in quantum simulators. To illustrate our framework, we compute the work and heat exchanged during a quench in a $Z_2$ lattice gauge theory coupled to matter in 1+1 dimensions. The thermodynamic quantities, as functions of the quench parameter, evidence an expected phase transition. For general thermal states, we derive a simple relation between a quantum many-body system's entanglement Hamiltonian, measurable with quantum-information-processing tools, and the Hamiltonian of mean force, used to define strong-coupling thermodynamic quantities.

Thermodynamics of quantum trajectories on a quantum computer

Abstract:Quantum computers have recently become available as noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. Already these machines yield a useful environment for research on quantum systems and dynamics. Building on this opportunity, we investigate open-system dynamics that are simulated on a quantum computer by coupling a system of interest to an ancilla. After each interaction the ancilla is measured and the sequence of measurements defines a quantum trajectory. Using a thermodynamic analogy, which identifies trajectories as microstates, we show how to control the dynamics of the open system in order to enhance the probability of quantum trajectories with desired properties, e.g., particular patterns or temporal correlations. We discuss how such biased -- generally non-Markovian -- dynamics can be implemented on a unitary, gate-based quantum computer and show proof-of-principle results on the publicly accessible \texttt{ibm\_jakarta} machine. While our study is solely conducted on small systems, it highlights the challenges in controlling complex aspects of open-system dynamics on digital quantum computers.
