Abstract:Red mud (RM) is a highly alkaline waste of industrial processes, and its prolonged storage has resulted in substantial safety and environmental challenges. Therefore, the comprehensive utilization and harmless treatment of RM have become an urgent global challenge. This research prepared red mud-based artificial lightweight aggregate (RM-LWA) by combining RM with multiple solid wastes (red brick, soda residue, and mineral powder). Various techniques (XRD, SEM, EDS, and FTIR) were employed to analyze the microstructure and mineral composition of both raw materials and RM-LWA. Additionally, the impact of various curing conditions and mixing water on the physical characteristics, freeze-thaw resistance, and heavy metal leaching characteristics of RM-LWA were examined. The findings revealed that RM-LWA achieved its highest cylinder crush strength, softening coefficient, apparent density, and bulk density (9.5 MPa, 0.96, 1022 kg/m(3), and 673 kg/m(3), respectively) when prepared with a sodium silicate solution (silica modulus of 1.0, SS 1.0) and cured at 90 degrees C (steam temperature) for 24 h. The water absorption rate after 1 h was 11.5 %, and the void ratio was 34.4 %. Microstructural analysis revealed that the RM-LWA hydration products mainly comprised calcite and C-S-H, forming a dense, cohesive gel structure that effectively covered the particle surfaces and improved binding effect. Under standard curing conditions, RM-LWA produced with SS 1.0 demonstrated superior freeze-thaw resistance with a complete mass loss of 100 % after 20 freeze-thaw cycles. Heavy metal leaching characteristic tests demonstrated that the Cr, As, Pb, Ni, and Cu leaching concentrations in the six groups of RM-LWA all complied with the prescribed limits for the release of non-hazardous substances into the environment according to the standards.
