Abstract:In this paper, we get a lower bound of the smallest singular value of an arbitrarily matrix A by the trace of H(A) and the Euclidean norm of H(A), where H(A) is Hermitian part of A, numerical examples show the e ectiveness of our results.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to obtain new lower bounds for the smallest singular value for some special subclasses of nonsingularH-matrices. This is done in two steps: first, unifying principle for deriving new upper bounds for the norm 1 of the inverse of an arbitrary nonsingular H-matrix is presented, and then, it is combined with some well-known upper bounds for the infinity norm of the inverse. The importance and efficiency of the results are illustrated by an example from ecological modelling, as well as on a type of large-scale matrices posessing a block structure, arising in boundary value problems.

Abstract:In this paper, some lower bounds for the smallest singular value of a general complex matrix are given in terms of the maximal off-diagonal element of the matrix. Each of the new bounds is generally stronger than previous published bounds in some cases. Examples are given to show that these bounds perform well for a large class of matrices.

Abstract:For a matrix A which is diagonally dominant both by rows and by columns, we give bounds for ‖A-1‖1 and ‖A-1‖∞, which then can be used to give a lower bound for the smallest singular value. We also show that these bounds can be attained, and show how the result can be extended to block matrices.

Abstract:In this study, some upper and lower bounds for singular values of a general complex matrix are investigated, according to singularity and Wielandt’s lemma of matrices. Especially, some relationships between the singular values of the matrix A and its block norm matrix are established. Based on these relationships, one may obtain the effective estimates for the singular values of large matrices by using the lower dimension norm matrices. In addition, a small error in Piazza (2002) [G. Piazza, T. Politi, An upper bound for the condition number of a matrix in spectral norm, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 143 (1) (2002) 141–144] is also corrected. Some numerical experiments on saddle point problems show that these results are simple and sharp under suitable conditions.

Abstract:This paper discusses conditions under which the solution of linear system with minimal Schatten- p norm, 0 < p ⩽ 1, is also the lowest-rank solution of this linear system. To study this problem, an important tool is the restricted isometry constant (RIC). Some papers provided the upper bounds of RIC to guarantee that the nuclear-norm minimization stably recovers a low-rank matrix. For example, Fazel improved the upper bounds to δ 4 r A < 0.558 and δ 3 r A < 0.4721, respectively. Recently, the upper bounds of RIC can be improved to δ 2 r A < 0.307. In fact, by using some methods, the upper bounds of RIC can be improved to δ 2 r A < 0.4931 and δ 2 r A < 0.309. In this paper, we focus on the lower bounds of RIC, we show that there exists linear maps A with δ 2 r A > 1/√2 or δ r A > 1/3 for which nuclear norm recovery fail on some matrix with rank at most r . These results indicate that there is only a little limited room for improving the upper bounds for δ 2 r A and δ r A . Furthermore, we also discuss the upper bound of restricted isometry constant associated with linear maps A for Schatten p (0 < p < 1) quasi norm minimization problem.

Abstract:Let $X=(x_{ij})\in\mathbb{R}^{N\times n}$ be a rectangular random matrix with i.i.d. entries (we assume $N/n\to\mathbf{a}>1$), and denote by $\sigma_{min}(X)$ its smallest singular value. When entries have mean zero and unit second moment, the celebrated work of Bai-Yin and Tikhomirov show that $n^{-\frac{1}{2}}\sigma_{min}(X)$ converges almost surely to $\sqrt{\mathbf{a}}-1.$ However, little is known when the second moment is infinite. In this work we consider symmetric entry distributions satisfying $\mathbb{P}(|x_{ij}|>t)\sim t^{-\alpha}$ for some $\alpha\in(0,2)$, and prove that $\sigma_{min}(X)$ can be determined up to a log factor with high probability: for any $D>0$, with probability at least $1-n^{-D}$ we have $$C_1n^{\frac{1}{\alpha}}(\log n)^\frac{5(\alpha-2)}{2\alpha}\leq \sigma_{min}(X)\leq C_2n^{\frac{1}{\alpha}}(\log n)^\frac{\alpha-2}{2\alpha}$$ for some constants $C_1,C_2>0$. This appears to be the first determination of $\sigma_{min}(X)$ in the $\alpha$-stable case with a correct leading order of $n$, as previous ant-concentration arguments only yield lower bound $n^\frac{1}{2}$. The same lower bound holds for $\sigma_{min}(X+B)$ for any fixed rectangular matrix $B$ with no assumption on its operator norm. The case of diverging aspect ratio is also computed. Geometrically, the lower bound shows that the random polytope $X^*(B_1^N)$ generated by heavy-tail distributions will with very high probability contain Euclidean balls $B_2^n$ of a much larger radius compared to its Gaussian counterpart.

Abstract:We perturb a real matrix $A$ of full column rank, and derive lower bounds for the smallest singular values of the perturbed matrix, in terms of normwise absolute perturbations. Our bounds, which extend existing lower-order expressions, demonstrate the potential increase in the smallest singular values, and represent a qualitative model for the increase in the small singular values after a matrix has been downcast to a lower arithmetic precision. Numerical experiments confirm the qualitative validity of this model and its ability to predict singular values changes in the presence of decreased arithmetic precision.

Abstract:Some monotone increasing sequences of the lower bounds for the minimum eigenvalue of $M$-matrices are given. It is proved that these sequences are convergent and improve some existing results. Numerical examples show that these sequences are more accurate than some existing results and could reach the true value of the minimum eigenvalue in some cases.

We show that where denotes the least singular value of A and the constants depend only on the distribution of the entries of A. This result confirms the folklore conjecture on the lower tail of the least singular value of such matrices and is best possible up to the dependence of the constants on the distribution of . Abstract:Let $A \in \mathbb{R}^{N \times n}$ ($N \geq n$) be a random matrix with columns that are mean 0 and isotropic and with independent entries having bounded $2+\beta$ moments. We show that the smallest singular value $\sigma_n(A)$ satisfies \[ \Pr \left(\sigma_n(A) \leq \varepsilon(\sqrt{N+1} - \sqrt{n})\right) \leq (C\varepsilon)^{N-n+1} + e^{-cN}, \] for all $\varepsilon > 0$, where $c,C$ depend only on $\beta$ and the $2+\beta$ moments. This extends earlier results of Rudelson and Vershynin, who showed that such lower tail estimates held for rectangular matrices with i.i.d. mean-0 subgaussian entries. When the $2+\beta$ moment assumption is replaced with a uniform anti-concentration assumption, $\sup_z \Pr\left(|X-z| < a\right) < b$, we show that \[ \Pr\left(\sigma_n(A) \leq \varepsilon(\sqrt{N+1} - \sqrt{n})\right) \leq (C\varepsilon\log(1/\varepsilon))^{N-n+1} + e^{-cN}, \] where $c_2,C_3$ now depend only on $a$ and $b$. This extends more recent work of Livshyts, whose showed that such lower tail estimates held for rectrangular matrices with i.i.d. rows. To prove these results we employ a number of new technical ingredients, including a new deviation inequality for the regularized Hilbert-Schmidt norm and a recently proven small ball estimate for the distance between a random vector and a subspace spanned by an inhomogeneous rectangular matrix.

Abstract:Recently Oishi published a paper allowing lower bounds for the minimum singular value of coefficient matrices of linearized Galerkin equations, which in turn arise in the computation of periodic solutions of nonlinear delay differential equations with some smooth nonlinearity. The coefficient matrix of linearized Galerkin equations may be large, so the computation of a valid lower bound of the smallest singular value may be costly. Oishi's method is based on the inverse of a small upper left principal submatrix, and subsequent computations use a Schur complement with small computational cost. In this note some assumptions are removed and the bounds improved. Furthermore a technique is derived to reduce the total computationally cost significantly allowing to treat infinite dimensional matrices.
