Abstract:Reviews structural–developmental studies of the hypothesized moral immaturity of juvenile delinquents. Despite methodological problems related to the assessment of both delinquent conduct and moral judgment, discernible trends in the data have begun to emerge. Perhaps most significant is that delinquency only moderately relates to a premoral ideological orientation. Although reliable differences between delinquent and nondelinquent youths in moral reasoning have not been demonstrated, moral judgment stage appears to covary with personality and behavioral characteristics of the delinquents themselves. Evidence also suggests that their level of moral judgment is significantly influenced by a variety of situational, motivational, and attitudinal variables. In light of these results, distinctions are drawn (following J. Flavell in T. Mischel, 1974) between underlying sociomoral capabilities and the tendency to exercise and apply these capabilities. Factors mediating various components of the moral judgment process in juvenile offenders are discussed. (3 p ref)

Movies and juvenile delinquency: an overview

Abstract:Film viewing may affect the juvenile delinquent through the processes known as social learning and instigation. Identification with the movie and its characters by the delinquent viewer is common, and studies have consistently demonstrated that films can affect delinquents, although in some cases the effects are small. Numerous examples of how films may serve as either the initiator or the final common pathway of delinquent acts are presented. However, prosocial aspects of films dealing with delinquency may exert a positive influence on the juvenile delinquent. Treatment implications of these observations are discussed from social learning and other perspectives.
Designing instructional media for severely retarded adolescents: a theoretical approach to trait-treatment interaction research

Abstract:Moderately and severely retarded adolescents (N=70) individually viewed a cartoon, a live action film, and a pixilation film in color or black and white. A distractor method was used to measure frequency and duration of eye movement to visual stimuli. Content of visual stimuli was controlled, presentation of a distractor randomized, and all eye movement monitored to the nearest second. Black and white visual presentations had greater attentional value than color presentations and use of real human beings appeared to be more salient as an attention-holding technique than was use of animated characters. Implications of the results for use with severely retarded adolescents were discussed.

Abstract:Perceptual and Motor Skills, Ahead of Print. In this study we investigated the effects of an 8-week table tennis exercise program with a task-oriented approach on visual perception and motor performance of 31 adolescents with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). The participants were identified by their teachers as having greater difficulty than their peers (450 students from three Korean middle schools) in physical education (PE) classes. On the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-2, these adolescents scored below the 15th percentile and showed difficulties in performing daily life activities due to motor performance problems; they did not have physical defects, intellectual or neurological impairments, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Of 98 prospective adolescents with PE difficulties, we obtained personal assent and parents' informed consent from 54, and 31 of these met screening criteria for DCD through the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire-Korean. This final group was divided in non-random fashion (based on the proximal geographic grouping of the children's schools) between an experimental group (n = 16) and a control group (n = 15). The experimental group participated in the 8-week task-oriented table tennis training program with three 90-minute sessions per week, while the control group only participated in regular PE classes twice per week. We measured participants' visual perception and motor performance in the same environment before and after the intervention program. Participants' visual perception was significantly more improved in the experimental group than the control group, with specific improved skills in visual-motor search, visual-motor speed, figure-ground, and visual closure; copying and perceptual constancy skills did not improve significantly. In addition, total motor performance and motor sub-skills, including fine manual control, manual coordination, body coordination, strength, and agility were significantly more improved in the experimental group than in the control group. Thus, our task-oriented table tennis exercise program was of greater assistance than general PE classes for improving visual perception and motor performance in adolescents at risk of DCD.

Effects of Computerized Social Skills Instruction for At-Risk Adolescents

Abstract:This study reports the effects of an interactive multimedia computer program for teaching social skills to youths with social-adjustment problems. Twelve youths (aged 11–17) were referred by the county diversion program or school guidance counselors. Seven were formally classified as having disabilities and had active Individualized Education Programs. A multiple-probe across-behaviors design was used, with each of the baselines demonstrating a youth’s role-playing performance of one of three social skills. Three other measures were also collected: (a) time spent; (b) skill-knowledge scores; and (d) satisfaction ratings. Role-play results indicated that the students with and without disabilities successfully learned and performed the steps of the skills, and they generalized their use of the social skills to novel situations. Written test results indicated the students’ knowledge of the social skills was significantly higher after the instruction than during pretesting. Importantly, the students endorsed the program, with most ratings at the “extremely satisfied” level.

Abstract:Objective To explore the neurophysiologic bases contributing to the aggressive and violent behaviors in male delinquents. Methods 47 male delinquents with official records of aggressive and violent violation and 41 normal controls were determined by brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAER), somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and auditory P300. Results Compared with the normals, the male delinquents with aggressive and violent behavior displayed prolonged V latency in BAER(P<0.01) reflecting more filtering out of peripheral auditory stimuli, prolonged P3 latency of target stimuli in auditory P300 during a standard oddball task(P<0.05) indicating less efficient cognitive functioning. Also the violent and aggressive adolescents demonstrated shorter N1 latency(P<0.05) and increased P2 (P<0.01)amplitude in SEP which implicated a significantly enhanced cortical response to somatosensory stimuli. Conclusions The abnormalities of BAER, SEP and P300 indicate decreased cortex arousal and secondary increasing sensation-seeking performance to somatosensory stimulus, which might partly underlies the neurophysiologic genesis of aggressive and violent behavior in male delinquents.

Often these students are placed with teachers who, although appropriately trained and licensed, are not familiar with support strategies for meeting the behavioral and emotional needs of these students at an appropriate cognitive representational level. This article describes six evidence-based visual support strategies, their benefits, and simple methods for implementing them in the classroom.

Abstract:The basis for training visual abilities to enhance sports performance is explored. Optometric intervention in sports assumes the following statements to be true: 1. Athletes have better visual abilities than non-athletes and better athletes have better visual abilities than the poorer athletes, 2. Visual abilities are trainable, and 3. Visual training is transferable to the performance of the athlete. The literature demonstrates that athletes have better visual abilities than non-athletes. Studies have shown this to be true in the following areas of vision: Larger extent of visual fields, larger fields of recognition (peripheral acuity), larger motion perception fields, lower amounts of heterophoria at near and far, more consistent simultaneous vision, more accurate depth perception, better dynamic visual acuity, and better ocular motilities. The literature also shows that all of the above skills are trainable. Two studies are cited that support the belief that visual training is transferable to athletic performance but they suffer from inadequate experimental design.

Abstract:This study draws upon Kaplan’s theory of self-attitude and deviant response to examine the relationship between health behavior and juvenile delinquency. The analysis, examining data from the Monitoring the Future 2013 study, shows that health behavior is associated with multiple forms of delinquency even after accounting for illness, as well as pertinent demographic and individual factors. The findings support the position that health behaviors have a distinct theoretical relationship with delinquency related to self-attitude, separate from the effects of illness. The article builds upon prior work regarding physical health and delinquency, demonstrating that a healthy lifestyle may decrease the likelihood of delinquency through an improvement in self-attitude.

Abstract:The present study explored the total adaptive behavior of children and adolescents with visual impairments, as well as their adaptive behavior in each of the domains of Communication, Daily Living Skills, and Socialization. Moreover, the predictors of the performance and developmental delay in adaptive behavior were investigated. Instrumentation included an informal questionnaire and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (Survey Form). Forty-six children and adolescents with visual impairments participated. The results reveal the effect of age on total adaptive behavior and on each of the domains of Communication, Daily Living Skills, and Socialization; the older individuals with visual impairments present better performance but also a higher rate of delay in comparison with younger individuals. Moreover, the ability of independent movement is a predictor of performance and developmental delay on the Daily Living Skills and Socialization. The more independent the mobility of individuals with visual impairments is the better the performance and the lower the level of developmental delay. Moreover, the educational level of parents is a predictor of performance and developmental delay on the Communication and Socialization. The higher the educational level of parents the better the performance and the lower the developmental delay.

Abstract:Introduction: A juvenile detention center is a place where teenagers with risky behaviors, such as competitiveness, separation from family, impatience, aggression, physical abuse, suicide, addiction, and theft, are kept to be corrected and trained. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) can greatly reduce high-risk behaviors in these individuals. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of ACT on the risk-taking behaviors of delinquents in a juvenile detention center. Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was performed on 60 male juvenile delinquents aged 12-18 years in a juvenile detention center in Southeast Iran. The participants were recruited by the census method and assigned to the intervention and control groups (30 in each group) using simple random sampling. The participants in the intervention group attended eight 90-min sessions of ACT, and the participants in the control group received routine training in the center. Iranian adolescents’ risk-taking scale was used to assess the risk-taking of samples before and one month after the ACT intervention. The study data were analyzed using descriptive (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (independent samples t-test, paired-samples t-test, chi-square test, and the analysis of covariance). Results: Most adolescents in the intervention and control groups were in the age group of 16-20 years (96.7%, and 93.3%, respectively) and had a middle school degree (56.7%, and 40%, respectively). A comparison of the mean risk-taking behaviors scores in the intervention (56.53±11.4) and the control groups (57.28±11.18) showed that the participants in both groups were engaged in high-risk behaviors and were similar. However, in the post-test stage, the mean risk-taking behaviors score in the intervention group decreased (39.64±10.26) compared with the control group (56.31±11.5) with a significant intergroup difference (P<0.05). Also, the Mean±SD risk-taking scores after the intervention were higher than the control group calculated by the covariance analysis for the intervention group participants. These differences were statistically significant (Cohen’s d=15.24, 95% CI, 10.91%-19.56%). Conclusion: According to the results, ACT reduced high-risk behaviors in juvenile delinquents. Thus, such psychological interventions can be performed to reduce high-risk behaviors in vulnerable groups such as adolescents in juvenile detention centers. Also, the effectiveness of these interventions can be evaluated in longitudinal studies.

Abstract:Juvenile delinquency, if defined through the opinions of several psychologists, is simply:all acts that violate the rules, whether legal rules or local customs that apply withincertain areas of society (Karlina, 2020). The number of juvenile delinquents in Indonesia is always increasingamounting to 10.7% and these include cases of theft, murder, promiscuity and drugs (Hardin& Nidia, 2022). The implementation stage was carried out using the Talk-Show method to students regarding problemsjuvenile delinquency and the role of sport/physical activity as an effort to prevent juvenile delinquency. Based on the resultsPre-Post Test of 5 sub-topics covering the definition of adolescence, pre-marital sex, drugs, smoking, and physical activityobtained Pre-Test results, 71.14% of respondents answered correctly, and Post-Test 81.53% of respondents who hadanswered correctly. Through the data that has been mentioned, increasing knowledge regarding juvenile delinquency throughthe Talk-Show method experienced an increase of 10.39%. Efforts to increase knowledge of juvenile delinquencyThrough this Talk-Show method, it is hoped that it will be able to provide broad knowledge to teenagerssignificantly affects development and growth in adolescence both physically and psychologically.And with this socialization, it is hoped that it will be able to provide positive direction for shifting focus todelinquency that occurs in teenagers.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this project was to develop a formal visual arts training curriculum and evaluate if there was improvement in the observational and descriptive skills of first- and second-year medical students for radiologic images. Materials and methods: A demographic survey and an initial pre-test of 12 radiologic images were administered asking an open-ended question to describe the image and to identify the abnormality in their own words. Three virtual one-hour sessions of visual thinking strategy (VTS) training occurred, and an immediate post-test and a six-month post-test were administered, each with images different from the pre-test, as well as a final questionnaire. All tests were independently graded by two graders with a previously established grading rubric. Differences in scores were analyzed using paired T-tests. Results: Thirty-nine medical students participated. The mean pre-test score was 62.2 +/- 18.6, and the mean post-test score improved by 41.7 +/- 17.9 points (p<0.01) to an average score of 103.9 +/- 20.4. Nine participants were lost to follow-up at six months, and the average six-month post-test score was 110.2 +/- 29.1 for a mean improvement of 9.3 +/- 13.1 points (p=0.320) from the initial post-test. Conclusion: There was a significant improvement in observational and descriptive skills in first- and second-year medical students when describing radiologic images, which was retained after six months. A formal VTS curriculum could play a beneficial role in medical student and radiology training programs not only to improve observational skills but also to address perceptual errors in diagnostic imaging.

Abstract:Self-determination and personality traits play a special role in goal setting and action. This study aimed to investigate the effect of self-determination training on personality traits in adolescents with visual impairment. The current study was a randomized controlled trial design. Twenty adolescents with visual impairment took part in this study. They were randomly selected from rehabilitation centers and were placed in intervention and control groups, each comprised of 10 students. The intervention group took part in the 10-session self-determination training, while the control group did not participate in the intervention. All participants filled out the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) pre-test and post-test. The scores were analyzed using the Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA). The findings suggested that self-determination training significantly and positively influenced personality traits in students with visual impairment ( p =.001). This study indicates that self-determination can improve personality traits in these participants. Therefore, the present research emphasizes that self-determination has favorable consequences in the daily life of adolescents with visual impairment.

Abstract:The necessity of delinquent behavior correction programs is determined by the prevention of wrongdoing and by the correction of behavior if a crime has been committed. The article aims to generalize the conceptual basis and principles of delinquent behavior correction program creation for youth detention center pupils. To achieve the set aims of the research, methods of scientific literature analysis method, interviewing, and mathematical statistics methods were used. Empiric research results on the effectiveness of various delinquent behavior correction program effectiveness, principles for the creation of effective programs, indicators, which can be used to evaluate the disposition of youth for delinquent behavior, and motives behind crimes were analyzed. Aggression level indicators and delinquent behavior disposition amongst pupils of the Kremenchuk youth detention center. Based on acquired data, a scheme of delinquent behavior correction program creation for pupils of various aggression and delinquent behavior disposition levels was developed.
Effects of Training Using Self-Modeling with Visual Cues on Skill Performance, Imagery, and Sports Confidence of Adolescent Female Soccer Players

Abstract:PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the effects of motion analysis and image training using self-modeling with visual cues on the skill performance, imagery, and sports confidence of adolescent female soccer players.METHODS The participants were elite soccer players from two girls’ high school soccer teams divided into an experimental group (D girls’ high school, n=16) and a control group (I girls’ high school, n=13). The experimental group underwent motion analysis and image training when performing penalty kicks, short kicks, and long kicks using selfmodeling with visual cues, while the control group underwent training using selfmodeling videos without visual cues. Before and after the training, the evaluation score was calculated according to kick performance, and the imagery and sports confidence factors were measured. For the statistical analysis of all collected data, descriptive statistics, the Friedman test, the Mann-Whitney U test, and two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance were used.RESULTS First, on the motion analysis using self-modeling with visual cues, the experimental group’s penalty kick and short kick scores were improved and differed significantly, but no significant change was noted in long kick score. Second, as a result of image training using selfmodeling with visual cues, all visual, kinesthetic, mood, and controllability factors of the experimental group improved except for the auditory factor, and the interaction effect was confirmed. In addition, the stated sports confidence of the experimental group was improved and the interaction effect confirmed.CONCLUSIONS The analysis of kick motion using self-modeling with visual cues was effective for the penalty kicks and short kicks of adolescent female soccer players. Moreover, this study confirmed that the analysis of kick motion improved the visual, kinesthetic, mood, and controllability sub-factors of imagery and significantly affected the players’ stated sports confidence.

Juvenile Justice Education For At-risk High School Youth: A Pilot Program

Abstract:Research has shown that current legal policies of transfer of juveniles to adult court, harsh sentences, and intimidating educational programs do not deter youthful crime. This study reports on a nonconfrontational pilot education program in the US juvenile justice system. In three urban high schools, an eight-week researcher-designed curriculum was delivered to three intervention classes totaling 125 at-risk students and three control classes totaling 100 at-risk students. Teachers in both groups administered pretest and posttest surveys. Descriptive statistics showed substantial knowledge gains for the intervention group, from 14.2 to 35.7% in all subdomains, and −7.2 to 21.4% gains for the control group. Chi-square analysis showed that the intervention group significantly increased knowledge and understanding of the US juvenile justice system in two of the six curriculum subdomains. The intervention group also significantly increased perceptions of fairness of the juvenile justice system. This program can serve as a model curriculum for at-risk high school youth.
Effects of training in visual discrimination after one year: visual analysis of volleyball skills

Abstract:Although the effects of specialized training in visual analysis of skills are well documented, whether the effects are lasting is not. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the effect a visual skills training program in volleyball had on participants one year after the completion of a training intervention. Subjects received either traditional performance instruction supplemented with visual training or traditional performance instruction in volleyball only. All subjects remaining in the teacher education program from a previous study were given a visual test on diagnosing errors in three different volleyball skills (the forearm pass, the overhead pass, and the overhead serve). Subjects exposed to visual training remained significantly better at diagnosing errors for the three volleyball skills one year later as compared to those subjects who had not received visual training.

Abstract:Visual supports have been advocated as one strategy to teach children with autism in physical education. However, empirical studies documented inconsistencies in their effectiveness, with some demonstrating positive effects while others reported limited support for their use. Without a clear synthesis of information, physical educators may have difficulties in identifying and meaningfully utilizing visual supports. A systematic literature review on visual supports was conducted with synthesized current literature for physical educators to make informed decisions regarding their use for children with autism in physical education. A total of 27 articles were reviewed, which included empirical- and narrative-based manuscripts. Results suggest that picture task cards, visual activity schedules, and video prompting can be potential strategies that physical educators can use to teach motor skills to children on the spectrum. However, video modeling may need to be further investigated to fully understand how to use it in the context of physical education.
