Abstract:The development of a smart microencapsulation system programmed to actively respond to environmental stimuli is gaining increasing importance compared to the traditional forms of drug administration. In this study, we introduce two new concepts of the drug delivery system, based on the light and pH-sensitive liquid crystal (LC) microspheres. The proposed system represents an emulsion formed by the immiscibility between the LC micro-spheres and a water environment. In this chapter, the authors introduce two new concepts of the drug delivery system, based on the light and pH-sensitive Liquid Crystal (LC) microspheres. They represent an emulsion formed by the immiscibility between the LC micro-spheres and a water environment. Acidity/alkalinity controlled drug delivery systems are gaining importance as the systems, because different organs, tissues, and cellular compartments have different pH values, which make the pH value a suitable stimulus for controlled drug release. Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are a class of soft materials, which presents peculiar optical properties due to their ability to self-organize in periodical helical structures. CLCs may be obtained adding chiral molecules in a suitable quantity into a nematic matrix. The proposed strategy can be considered as a new platform for the photostimulated/pH-sensitive drug delivery systems that offer the possibilities of the controlled delivery and release of a wide variety of drugs into the body, at the suitable time and desired site.
