Abstract:During COVID-19, the working world has changed inevitably, and many managers experience extreme strain and stress. This study determines how managers cope with the changes during COVID-19 from a positive psychology and salutogenic perspective. It employs a hermeneutical research design and an interpretivist paradigm by using a mixed-method research approach in which managers’ sense of coherence (SOC) is investigated quantitatively through the 29-item Life-Orientation scale and qualitatively through semi-structured interviews. Purposeful and snowball sampling techniques are used. The sample consists of 17 managers. Data were collected in different organizations within South Africa and analysed through content analysis, linking quantitative and qualitative data in a holistic, integrated and complex way. In terms of the quantitative findings, the managers scored at the medium and higher end of the SOC-scale in comprehensibility, followed by manageability and finally meaningfulness. Male managers in the age group 47–57 scored highest. Female and younger managers scored lower on average. Lowest scores in comprehensibility and manageability were scored by a young female manager, while in meaningfulness the oldest male participant scored lowest. The qualitative findings show that high scoring SOC managers apply complex thoughts to the present and future workplace scenario. Individuals with lower SOC scores do not present as much knowledge, complex thinking and argumentation structures during the interview in comprehensibility scores as high scoring SOC managers, yet still acquire resources to manage the workplace (manageability). High meaningfulness scores are associated with creating meaningful workplace interaction (human–human and machine–human), knowledge distribution through technology, impactfulness, experiencing the job as meaningful, including helping others, and achievements. Managers have a complex view of the world and findings show the complex connections of a high/low SOC scores and the managers’ explorations and systemic understanding regarding their managerial world. Conclusions and recommendations for theory and practice are given.

Abstract:Abstract Interviews with 60 businesspeople coping with COVID-19 show that they elaborate the pandemic with reference to other crises they have faced. A model of sensemaking among crises is put forward, conceptualizing crises as recurrent, rather than singular or continuous. Among crises, comparisons to past experiences help make sense of the present situation: businesspeople who perceived COVID-19 to have analogues to crises they had (successfully) faced before felt hopeful about their ability to cope with the pandemic, while those who insisted that the pandemic was without precedent were more pessimistic than their peers. In this way, crises enter cultural repertoires, helping to make sense of unsettled times and even underpinning expectations of resilience. This process is an integral part of the entrepreneurial story: given cultural repertoires replete with narratives of virtuous economic actors successfully surmounting crises and managing risk, it is among crises that businesspeople either substantiate or challenge such beliefs.

Abstract:The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic shook the entire world. All sectors, industries, organisations, and more importantly, people were affected by multiple restrictions implemented by their respective governing bodies. Federal lockdowns and all the emerging laws and regulations associated with them have forced organisations worldwide to transition their operations to remote environments. The implications from the organisations’ perspective vary from leadership to management, structure to operations, and training and development to policy making. However, from the employees’ perspective, the implications vary from general well-being to work engagement, satisfaction to motivation, and followership to trust. Nonetheless, remote work has other implications, such as productivity, the impact of social distancing, work-life balance, and isolation concerns. Therefore, this article aims to present critical thinking and comprehensively analyse the existing literature on remote working, transformational leadership, and work engagement contexts. Theoretical and practical gaps are discussed, and recommendations for future research could contribute to our better understanding of remote leadership and its practical elements. Remote working environments are believed to be permanent working arrangements for many organisations and employees; hence, scholars and practitioners must explore them to further depths.

Navigating change in the era of COVID-19: The role of top leaders' charismatic rhetoric and employees' organizational identification

Abstract:The Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had tremendous and swift effects on organizational change. This study examined how organizations can leverage leadership and employee resources to facilitate positive change outcomes. Drawing from the self-concept based motivational theory of charismatic leadership and substitutes for leadership theory, the current study proposed a theoretical model connecting top leaders' charismatic rhetoric, employees' affective commitment to change, and employees' turnover intention. Furthermore, the study investigated contingencies that may modify the relationship between leadership communication and followers' outcomes. Results from an online panel of 417 U.S. employees showed that top leaders' use of charismatic rhetoric during change led to followers' affective commitment to change, which decreased their turnover intention. Furthermore, employees' organizational identification moderated this relationship. When employees have low identification with their organizations, top leaders' charismatic rhetoric to address the immediate change is more needed.
Business transformation in an age of turbulence - Lessons learned from COVID-19

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has caused global economic turmoil. Although many companies have suffered huge losses, some have flourished by changing their old ways of doing business. We investigate the business transformation process under drastic market changes and time pressure, with a focus on decision speed and structure in the decision & planning phase, the implementation structure and monitoring in the implementation phase, and reinforcement after the implementation. Through case studies in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, e-commerce, and finance, we explore how companies in specific contexts have dealt with the above-mentioned critical factors when transforming their business during the pandemic, whether the experienced transformation processes differ from theory, and if so, how. The examples of business transformations cover eight categories, including work from home, the use of augmented reality, internet of things, and business model redesign. Our findings reveal how these transformations are perceived and evaluated by companies one year into the pandemic. In addition, we show how decision speed, structure of the decision-making process, structure of the implementation process, and scale of the implementation impact the completion time of the transformations. Based on our results, we provide suggestions to companies for an effective business transformation in times of crisis.

Abstract:The disruption caused by the pandemic has called into question industrial norms and created an opportunity to reimagine the future of work. We discuss how this period of opportunity may be leveraged to bring about a future in which the workforce thrives rather than survives. Any coherent plan of such breadth must address the interaction of multiple technological, social, economic, and environmental systems. A shared language that facilitates communication across disciplinary boundaries can bring together stakeholders and facilitate a considered response. The origin story of cybernetics and the ideas posed therein serve to illustrate how we may better understand present complex challenges, to create a future of work that places human values at its core.

Abstract:This paper conceptualises the COVID-19 pandemic as a "rare event." Rare events channel managerial attention to magnified issues and foster resource mobilisation and learning. We draw on a case study of a US consumer lender to develop a model explaining how organisations actualise digital affordances as part of their rare event response and, in doing so, leverage the transformative experience towards establishing a "new normal." The model and its instantiation contribute conceptual understanding and advice for how IS managers may effectively address rare events and, in particular, the COVID-19 pandemic, including the aftermath of its lockdown and the transition to the new business status quo. The model emphasises the importance of understanding the evolution of digital affordances as possessing teleological paths where affordances are developed in steps corresponding to where an organisation focuses its managerial attention, with indirect consequences of possibilities to attend to other objectives enabled by digital technologies. Overall, the model contributes to theory by explaining the role of rare events in the evolution of affordances, including some that can be transformative and introducing the rare events literature into the IS discipline.

Abstract:Our world is evolving at an incredibly enormous speed and what was impossible three years ago is now a reality. The concept of leadership and leaders has also undergone profound transformations. Moreover, the recent COVID-19 pandemic caused a digital surge in the ways economic life, business, or education are perceived or conducted. The pandemic proved that small and large businesses, industries, and the whole economies can be suddenly upended by massive technological shifts. Hence, there is a need for a theoretical research update in leadership in business and economics that would bring new insights into this topic and define its place within the context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our paper presents the novel insights for the leaders and the leadership concept in business and economics from various approaches and angles of view in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on sustainable leadership and organizational resilience. It aims at outlying the theoretical background of leadership in business and economics after the pandemic and bringing up interesting and recent leadership case studies from all around of the world. Moreover, this paper aims as sharing the valuable insights into what it means to be a sustainable leader in business and economics, why leaders are needed, and how to become one. The main criteria of this research and its instrumentation include both the theoretical discussion based on the literature review and analysis and the empirical analysis that supports these theoretical provisions. The paper features an empirical model that assesses how business and economic leaders are searching for new ways of work and personal development during and after the COVID-19 pandemic using the own data from the 400 respondents collected in the Czech Republic and Russia. We found that the pandemic enhanced the emotional creativity of business and economic leaders and made them to invest and engage more into using new digital technologies and fundamentally altering the old ways of managing and governing their respective companies and institutions. Our results might provide valuable food for thought both for academics working on various angles of leadership, as well as for entrepreneurs and businesspeople who want to receive recent updates on the topic of leadership to use them in their daily work.

Abstract:Abstract Sensemaking is widely acknowledged as providing valuable guidance on how individuals and groups organize to perceive issues at stake, thereby lessening the negative impacts of future unknowns. Sensemaking is not a new field, yet events surrounding the recent COVID-19 pandemic may benefit from a sensemaking perspective. While prior reviews have considered sensemaking research, this is arguably the first bibliometric review of sensemaking and its application across the entire business and management domain. From 2,838 articles, we used performance analysis and science mapping techniques to offer propositions and avenues for future research. We advance theory and offer practical implications by identifying and providing context about prominent theorists, authors, journals, articles, and environments where sensemaking has been studied. Thirty-five years after the first article on sensemaking was published, this paper offers an extensive review demonstrating the evolution, current interests, and future directions of sensemaking research in the business and management discipline.

Abstract:The impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) pandemic is unprecedented. At an organisational level, the crisis has been hugely disruptive, complex and fraught with ambiguity for leaders. The crisis is fundamentally a human one, making human resource (HR) leaders central in enabling organisations to manage through and ultimately exit the crisis successfully. We apply a paradox lens to understand the HR leadership challenges posed by the COVID‐19 crisis. We argue that how the HR function responds to the challenges of the crisis and its role in mapping the exit route from the crisis are likely to shape the trajectory of the function for decades to come. The pandemic creates an unprecedented opportunity to elevate the status of the HR function in organisations where it has struggled to gain status and to reinforce the influence of the function in those where it already enjoys legitimacy. The value of this is likely to be reflected in more sustainable performance through the alignment of people and purpose and balancing the short and long term objectives of the organisation.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic and its medical, social and economic impacts presented profound challenges to business, government, and society. It also presents management scholars with an opportunity to rethink some of our core assumptions and directions of our research. In response, in the Summer of 2020, in our capacity as co- General Editors of the Journal of Management Studies, one of the foremost academic journals of management and organization studies, we commissioned short commentaries from leading management scholars. In total, we published 36 of these commentaries and intend to publish several more in the coming months. Topics ranged from strategy and entrepreneurship to OB/OT, innovation and sustainability. Below, we provide our synthesis and integration of three related – overarching themes that emerged from this collection, as well as a final set of insights that we derived from this initiative.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest global crisis of our lifetimes, and leadership has been critical to societies' capacity to deal with it. Here effective leadership has brought people together, provided a clear perspective on what is happening and what response is needed, and mobilized the population to act in the most effective ways to bring the pandemic under control. Informed by a model of identity leadership (Haslam, Reicher & Platow, 2020), this review argues that leaders' ability to do these things is grounded in their ability to represent and advance the shared interests of group members and to create and embed a sense of shared social identity among them (a sense of "us-ness"). For leaders, then, this sense of us-ness is the key resource that they need to marshal in order to harness the support and energy of citizens. The review discusses examples of the successes and failures of different leaders during the pandemic and organizes these around five policy priorities related to the 5Rs of identity leadership: readying, reflecting, representing, realizing, and reinforcing. These priorities and associated lessons are relevant not only to the management of COVID-19 but to crisis management and leadership more generally.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has led to widespread remote working that has posed significant challenges for people’s sense of connection to their workplace and their mental health and well-being. In the present work, we examined how leaders’ identity leadership is associated with the well-being of employees in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, we examined how both leaders’ and team members’ identity leadership is associated with employees’ social identity continuity, and through this with their job satisfaction, burnout and loneliness at work. Employees ( N = 363) participated in a field study during the COVID-19 pandemic, completing measures of their leader’s and team members’ identity leadership (i.e., entrepreneurship and impresarioship), social identity continuity, job satisfaction, burnout, loneliness at work. Results revealed that to the extent that employees perceived greater social identity continuity, they were more satisfied with their work and felt less lonely. Furthermore, mediation analyses revealed indirect effects of team members’ identity entrepreneurship on job satisfaction and loneliness via an increase in social identity continuity. Results suggest that to foster employees’ health and well-being in times of disruption, organizations might put in place practices that allow employees to maintain a sense of ‘we-ness’ at work by involving not only formal leaders but also other members of the organization.

Making Sense of Change Through Simulation: Organizational Futures at Play

Abstract:Simulation can be a powerful vehicle for prospective sensemaking, especially in organizational change processes where actors' ability to engage with possible futures is essential. Yet, the way that actors enact different potential futures together via simulation has not been fully explored nor investigated across different contexts. We report on a qualitative study of how healthcare staff in an emergency department (ED) made sense of a planned change process via a simulation tool to explore how moving into a new building might impact their work. We observed simulation sessions and interviewed managers and staff. Using sensemaking theory, we analyse how actors engaged in iterations of different forms of prospective sensemaking together, both in the simulated organizational change and of the organizational change process itself. We found that the way actors used their bodies and the simulation tool to experience potential changes in work environment and work processes elicited emotions such as worry and excitement and deliberations about consequences and potential actions. Our study highlights the interwoven embodied, material and emotional elements of prospective sensemaking: through simulation, we experience and feel the possible futures that can arise from change. MAD statement This article demonstrates how simulation tools can facilitate sensemaking of organizational change in and between individuals. It shows how simulations of work in future physical surroundings can elicit strong emotions such as worry and hope for the imagined futures. The findings shed light on how people, who are trying to explore what organizational change might mean for them and their work, relate to desired and undesired futures through their bodies and physical surroundings. Such prospective sensemaking is a significant driver of organizational change. Therefore, understanding the embodied, material and emotional aspects underpinning such processes is important for both scholarship and practice.
Making sense of youth futures narratives: Recognition of emerging tensions in students’ imagination of the future

Abstract:In this era of great uncertainty, imagining the future may be challenging, especially for young people. In science education, the interest in future-oriented education is now emerging, research needs, however, to keep eyes on youngsters’ future perceptions and on the development of a future literacy. In this article, starting from a sample of individual students’ narratives about their future daily life in 2040, we aim to delineate which ways of grappling with the future can be observed in the essays and which methodological tools are suited to operationalize their identification and characterization. The analysis led to the definition of “polarization” and “complexification” attitudes that represent the ways in which the students’ narratives are positioned with respect to a bunch of dichotomies: personal–societal, functional–aesthetics oriented, good–bad, natural–artificial, and certain–uncertain. Moreover, with this study, we provide a contribution to the methodological reflection that deals with the collection and analysis of data, when students’ future perceptions need to be investigated. Discussing the limits of the current data collection tool, we introduce the design of a SenseMaker® questionnaire which contributed to feeding a collaboration with #OurFutures project, recently launched by the European Commission to collect future narratives all around Europe.

Expert predictions of societal change: Insights from the world after COVID project.

Abstract:How do experts in human behavior think the world might change after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic? What advice do they have for the postpandemic world? Is there a consensus on the most significant psychological and societal changes ahead? To answer these questions, we analyzed interviews from the World After COVID Project-reflections of more than 50 of the world's top behavioral and social science experts, including fellows of National Academies and presidents of major scientific societies. These experts independently shared their thoughts on possible psychological changes in society in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and provided recommendations how to respond to the new challenges and opportunities these shifts may bring. We distilled these predictions and suggestions via human-coded analyses and natural language processing techniques. In general, experts showed little overlap in their predictions, except for convergence on a set of social/societal themes (e.g., greater appreciation for social connection, increasing political conflict). Half of the experts approached their post-COVID predictions dialectically, highlighting both positive and negative features of the same domain of change, and many expressed uncertainty in their predictions. The project offers a time capsule of experts' predictions for the effects of the pandemic on a wide range of outcomes. We discuss the implications of heterogeneity in these predictions, the value of uncertainty and dialecticism in forecasting, and the value of balancing explanation with predictions in expert psychological judgment. Abstract:Summary The world has witnessed high‐intensity and low‐occurrence crises such as the COVID‐19 pandemic that have radically changed not only the discourses of health and safety but also permanently changed the realities of the workplace. The COVID‐19 pandemic‐related new normal has resulted in the exponential increase in the acceptance of "homeplace" or "work from home" in work‐related domains. With this sudden dramatic shift in the way the present and future work is being conceptualized, there is every reason to believe that employees struggle with a plethora of intertwined thoughts and emotions, particularly a heightened sense of social isolation and exclusion from their work environment. The present study is an attempt to address this concern in the broader ambit of inclusive organizational behavior. Using an interpretivist research approach, we dwell on the genesis of organizational behavior in changing times, particularly digitalization and social isolation. We employ inductive analysis of the employee data generated over two waves and use grounded theory to explain how inclusive behavior could be fostered within organizations. Our study provides an early conceptualization of inclusive organizational behavior by identifying four factors, namely, inclusive support, inclusive work design, inclusive culture, and inclusive mindset. Furthermore, based on the findings of the study, a three‐tier model of inclusive organizational behavior is proposed that links individual, group, and system‐level dynamics in the organizations.

Abstract:Research Summary This study explores how digital transformation can promote organizational resilience when incumbent firms face crises. We examine the intersection of digital transformation and resilience‐seeking processes through two longitudinal case studies of incumbent firms designated as "essential businesses" during the COVID‐19 pandemic. We analyze 72 crisis adaptations the firms implemented during the crisis to understand how previously underutilized digital capabilities upgraded each firm's ability to adapt to mitigate stakeholder risks and engage in resilience‐seeking rather than advantage‐ or opportunity‐seeking. We identify five digital capabilities—virtual access, virtual collaboration, data‐driven decision‐making, algorithmic reprogrammability, and assisted decision‐making—that arose from technologies acquired to enable digital transformation before the crisis. We discuss the concept of resilience opportunities and contribute to the literatures on digital transformation and organizational resilience. Managerial Summary While studying the digital transformation of incumbent firms, we found that digital capabilities helped firms adapt during the COVID‐19 pandemic in ways that crisis management plans did not anticipate. As a result, these adaptations accelerated digital transformation initiatives that years of strategic planning had failed to achieve. We explain why the quantum leap in digital transformation helped these firms not only adapt during crisis, but digital adaptation also enabled them to bounce back more resilient and competitive than before the crisis. We show how the pursuit of organizational resilience can be a vital justification for investments in digital transformation.
